    Enjoy the baths to your heart’s content.

    I thought it was a very nice Ryokan. Even though the building and Facility are understandably old, all of the staff were wonderful. Dinner had a wide variety of dishes, and for my growing son they kindly provided extra white rice in addition to the final rice course, which we really appreciated. The attendant was also very kind, and we enjoyed our meal at a relaxed pace. There were several baths and we couldn’t try them all, but I’d definitely like to come back and enjoy them again. One small downside was that the shower temperature in the bath area wasn’t consistent, but overall it was a great stay. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    The Onsen is wonderful.

    Thank you for your hospitality. I have stayed at this property several times, and the Onsen is always excellent no matter how many times I visit. However, the Facility is aging, and I think repairs or renovations are needed. Dinner was flawless, but I felt breakfast could use a bit more thought. I really would have liked salad and a Japanese omelet; it was disappointing.

    We thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen.

    It truly lived up to its name—an entire day immersed in Onsen. Each bath had its own charm, and we enjoyed them all. The meals were also thoughtfully prepared and comforting; we were very satisfied with both dinner and breakfast.

    Very old.

    I stayed in a Room with a hinoki bath supplied by free-flowing Onsen water. Overall, the farther you go inside, the older it feels. There were many frayed spots in the hallway carpet, and clumps of dust on the elevator window. When I entered the Room, there were dead insects. The free-flowing Onsen bath was empty, and even after running the water it was cold and not Onsen water. When I called, I was told that guests are supposed to fill it themselves, and that because the source piping is far away, hot water will not come out for a while. If they know this, they should have measures in place. There was no temperature control for the source water; it came out extremely hot and I had to adjust it myself. It took quite a long time. The meals were quite disappointing; even at breakfast, the ingredients—including the nori—were cheap. Visiting Rooms with free-flowing Onsen baths is my hobby, and I travel around Tohoku and Northern Kanto about once a month. This was my fourth time in Shima Onsen, but I would not return here.

    There was no bathtub and no shower.

    I made a Reservation based on the information that some Rooms do not have a bath, but I was not informed in advance by phone or at check-in. I only found out after entering the Room that there was no bath, and there was no shower either. In fact, it seems that most Rooms do not even have a shower. At the very least, it would be helpful for guests if you could clearly inform them before they enter the Room that there is no shower or bath, but I was told by the owner that this is not their policy.

    A Delicious Accommodation for Onsen Hopping

    Checked in at 3:00 PM while a typhoon was passing through. Took a short walk around the Accommodation, then enjoyed an Onsen tour. Stayed relaxed inside the Accommodation until around 10:30 AM the next morning. Because we had plenty of time, we were able to soak in almost all of the Onsen baths. It seemed each bath was drained and cleaned in turn, and the spotless Onsen left a strong impression. The drinkable spring water tasted salty and was unexpectedly delicious. Both dinner and breakfast were thoughtfully prepared and very tasty. We chose the cheapest Plan, so we accepted that the view wasn’t great. An Accommodation I’d love to stay at again.

    There is nothing else.

    I stayed fully aware that this is a historic Ryokan. The staff at both the front desk and the restaurant were all very pleasant, and the lounge where complimentary drinks are served was also very comfortable. The food was neither particularly good nor bad, but I was able to enjoy it quietly in a private room. I stayed in Room 721 of Mokuyukan. It was warm even though it was May, and the Room felt hot, so I turned on the air conditioner. A musty odor spread immediately, and when I looked at the unit, the vent outlet was covered with thick dust. Given the smell, there also seems to be significant mold on the internal fins. In addition, the washbasin had slimy orange buildup around the base of the faucet and in the drain, making it obvious it had not been cleaned—very unpleasant. I paid about JPY 50,000 per person for one night with dinner and breakfast, yet every time I used the washbasin I felt sickened, and having to endure a whole night without using the air conditioner because of the odor was extremely distressing. Being historic is one thing; neglecting cleaning is another. How many years’ worth of dust is stuck to the toilet window? To senior management at Shima Tamura: I understand you are busy, but rather than leaving everything entirely to housekeeping, I believe members of management should personally conduct a detailed inspection again. Your service standards are otherwise excellent, which makes this all the more disappointing.

    Indulge in Onsen Baths and Delicious Cuisine

    Our annual Onsen trip with my mom friends in our 50s. This time, we headed to Shima Onsen for the hot springs. The age of the Facility and the inconvenient layout due to extensions and renovations can’t be denied, but even so, the Onsen and meals were outstanding. The Onsen water was soft, and the temperature was just right. The full-service meals were excellent, served at a perfect pace, and the hospitality from our attendant—a gentleman from Nepal—was wonderful. We would love to visit again.

    Family Trip

    The Onsen and meals were excellent!! When I asked a question at the time of Reservation about my husband’s birthday, you replied promptly by email, called us as well, and were very kind. Our 5-year-old daughter loved the Onsen and was so excited, saying she wanted to go in again. It was also great that the bath in our Room was an Onsen. Thank you very much.

    It became the reason I fell in love with Onsen.

    I used this place to celebrate my friend's birthday. Since my friend loves Onsen, I chose Tamura with its variety of atmospheric large baths as a surprise, and it was the perfect choice. All the baths were wonderful, but our favorite was "Omuso no Yu." It was an amazing experience to soak in such a beautiful bath while reflecting on thoughts. The morning bath at "Mori no Kodama" was also very lovely. We enjoyed both breakfast and dinner, and the flavors were just right, highlighting the natural taste of the ingredients—absolutely delicious! The portions were perfect; we felt full but not too heavy, which made it easy to enjoy another bath after dinner. Thanks to this wonderful experience at Tamura, we've already decided on another Onsen trip next month. This year might turn into a year of exploring Onsen destinations! My friend and I agreed that if we stay in Shima Onsen again, it has to be Tamura. We’re already planning our next visit soon. Thank you for such an amazing experience!

    It was an Onsen-filled experience.

    We enjoyed exploring various baths, it was a lot of fun. The room we stayed in was the farthest location, so at first, the complex movement with elevator transfers felt inconvenient. Since this wasn't clear during the reservation process, I realized I should have researched more (but we got used to it quickly and it became good exercise!). The open-air bath with a view of the waterfall was amazing. The onsen water quality was soft and excellent. It was also great that we could enjoy the onsen almost privately or with only a few people around. The bath in our room was very hot, so perhaps we should have filled it immediately upon arrival and let it cool down for some time. The meals were delicious as well. Thank you for taking care of us!

    It was a charming On...

    It was a charming Onsen Ryokan. With many Onsen options, there were times when we had the baths all to ourselves. The room was spacious and nice, but as the building is aging, renovating at least one section into new rooms with private open-air baths would make it worth staying even at double the price. The potential of this Ryokan is very high.

    Unfortunately.

    The accommodation reception service was poor. Since it was a last-minute reservation, dinner was at the affiliated Shima Grand Hotel buffet, but the glasses were dirty, which was unacceptable. Additionally, there was an unpleasant smell from the nearby restroom near the room, which was disappointing.

    Enjoy endless Onsen relaxation.

    Stayed at the accommodation for the third time this year (April, June, September). - Enjoyed 10 baths, including the one in the room. - Had a leisurely and delicious dinner. - It was very quiet with no groups around, allowing for a relaxing stay.

    Relax at a quiet Onsen.

    I decided to visit an accommodation I had been interested in but couldn't go to before, as I found a great deal on IKYU.com. Shima Onsen is located deep in the mountains, but the roads are wide and easily accessible by car. At the ryokan, you take off your shoes at the entrance and change into slippers, which made the hallways feel especially clean. This time, I stayed in a room with a cypress bath and enjoyed onsen in my room; however, there are plenty of baths within the facility, so even without an en-suite bath, you can fully enjoy your stay. Shima Onsen has gentle waters that suit my preference. The open-air bath overlooking the river was particularly relaxing. There is also a lounge for guests with a drink bar offering coffee and soft drinks. Despite being a large ryokan, it was surprisingly quiet and allowed for a peaceful stay.

    I stayed at a room with a private Onsen bath at Suiyokan during the Premium Summer SALE. We were very satisfied as we could stay for two people at the price of one person. Although our room was the farthest from the large public baths and other bathing facilities, we considered walking around the facility as a way to get some exercise. The unique atmosphere of each bath made the experience enjoyable, but having a private Onsen bath in our room where we could adjust the temperature to our liking was truly exceptional. Shima Onsen's water quality is outstanding, and having an in-room Onsen bath felt like pure luxury. Although we didn’t upgrade our meals, they were delicious and served in generous portions. During this trip, my husband injured his foot while hiking before arriving at the accommodation. After soaking for an extended time in an open-air Onsen, he suddenly experienced severe pain and couldn’t move. When I consulted with reception about him being unable to go to the dining area, they promptly provided us with a wheelchair and cooling patches, which was incredibly helpful. The staff also supported us during meals at the dining venue, making it a comfortable experience overall. We are deeply grateful for their assistance and look forward to visiting again during another season!

    Good Accommodation

    The facility feels a bit dated, but despite its large size, it was very clean. Although the room was assigned randomly, when I requested a room with a nice view, they provided us with a maisonette room on the top floor. It was spacious and comfortable with semi-double beds that offered great sleep quality. For dinner and breakfast, the accommodation informed us of set times during check-in; however, when we asked to change due to not being hungry at the time, they kindly accommodated our request. Dinner was served buffet-style at their sister hotel, Shima Grand Hotel, where the steak was particularly delicious. Breakfast was served at Tamura and included rice porridge and hot plate dishes—both were quite satisfying. Next time, I plan to have dinner at Tamura as well. Shima Grand Hotel also had karaoke rooms and game corners available for entertainment, along with shuttle service provided between facilities. The staff members at both accommodations were extremely kind and attentive. There are seven bathing areas in total with excellent water quality for enjoying Onsen to your heart's content!

    The Onsen and service were excellent, but the meals were a bit disappointing.

    The staff's hospitality was excellent, making our stay very pleasant. The building has a historical feel, which added to its charming and unique atmosphere. The room was spacious at 15 tatami mats, allowing us to relax comfortably. However, we noticed a peculiar smell upon entering the room that slightly bothered us. The highlight of our stay was definitely the Onsen. With numerous baths available, we were able to fully enjoy ourselves and create unforgettable memories. On the other hand, we felt slightly disappointed with the dining experience. For dinner buffet, there were only two time slots available: 5:30 PM or 7:30 PM. We chose 7:30 PM but found that cleanup began at 8:45 PM, which made it feel rushed. It was also very crowded right after it started; we had to wait about 20 minutes in line for food, leaving us with less actual dining time than expected. The dishes themselves lacked local specialties and left an overall ordinary impression. Additionally, the all-you-can-drink option (60 minutes for ¥2,000) could have offered more variety as it only included beer, highball whiskey drinks, and wine—this felt limited for ¥2,000 per hour. While the service and Onsen were outstanding enough to leave a lasting impression on us positively overall—the dining aspect left something to be desired this visit specifically under buffet-style Plan chosen this time around! We believe Kaiseki cuisine might offer different wonderful experiences altogether instead next opportunity arises visiting again someday soon hopefully!

    "Truly a renowned hot spring!"

    For years, I couldn't visit Shima Onsen. Among the options, I always wanted to stay at "Tamura," and my wish finally came true. It truly deserves the title of a renowned Onsen! The water is great for your skin! I wanted to stay longer and bathe every day. It has become one of my top favorite Onsens!

    I had a great time.

    The accommodation truly lives up to its promise of enjoying Onsen to the fullest, with several baths offering various styles and experiences. However, the routes to each bath were a bit confusing, and there was quite a bit of walking involved, leaving us exhausted by the time we returned to our room after bathing. This is definitely a place for those planning to relax entirely within the accommodation. We chose a maisonette-type room, which felt luxurious for just the two of us as a couple. While it's undeniable that the accommodation is old, the room itself was reasonably well-maintained. Dinner was honestly disappointing; there were few dishes, and it ended rather quickly—leaving an impression of being too light overall. That said, we were generally satisfied with our stay.

    Delightful meals and a relaxing Onsen for your satisfaction

    We chose the "Room Assigned on Arrival Plan" and were pleasantly surprised with a great room, making our stay very comfortable. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious and satisfying. The young foreign woman who served us during dinner was charming, as her effort to speak Japanese, though not fluent, was very endearing. The bath had soft water with a classic Onsen feel—truly wonderful. The open-air bath in the morning was exceptional! Soaking in the Onsen while enjoying the blue sky, the sound of the stream, scenic views, and lush greenery provided a truly relaxing moment. All staff members were friendly and welcoming, making this an incredibly satisfying Onsen trip.

    Reserve a meal with the plan at Shima Grand Hotel.

    The room is in the most affordable Kinpokan accommodation. The building has three wings, and the bath is located on the lowest floor of Kinpokan, which was conveniently close. Staying at Suipokan or Mokupokan may change your room experience. For dinner on the second night, we chose a buffet at a sister accommodation. It’s about a 3-5 minute walk, but shuttle service is also available. With the special perk of a bathing passport gift, you can also enjoy Shima Grand Hotel's facilities.

    Enjoy a variety of baths.

    The Room was the most affordable, so the evaluation was average. The TV was small, and the toilet was narrow. I believe upgrading to a special room or higher-ranked Room would make a difference. The meals were kaiseki cuisine and just right. The bath had various types and was enjoyable.

    There are various types of baths, and two of them are accessible at any time. The steam bath warms your body to the core and improves your well-being, making it a favorite among guests. Please note that taking the wrong elevator may lead you to a different bath than intended, so we recommend checking the guide map carefully.

    Accommodation that exceeds expectations and offers great value.

    This was my first visit to Shima Onsen. After some consideration, I chose the long-established Tamura accommodation. Known as an onsen-focused accommodation, it offers a variety of baths that are perfect for onsen enthusiasts. While you can also use the onsen at the nearby Grand Hotel, I personally found Tamura to be more than sufficient. The meals were served buffet-style, and everything was of high quality. The tuna sashimi, sweet shrimp, and freshly fried tempura were particularly delicious. The service was excellent, with staff members kindly engaging with us throughout our stay. The room exceeded my expectations in terms of spaciousness, and even the surrounding hallways were impressive. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay and would definitely like to return if given the opportunity!

    A Favorite Accommodation for Parents in Their 80s

    This is our third stay with my parents, who have weak legs and eyesight. The room with an Onsen and onsen heating is incredibly comfortable and reassuring compared to our cold home. This time, we stayed at Mizuwakan, which was farther from the dining area, but the distance felt just right for a pleasant walk. During this visit, I finally experienced all the large public baths after three stays. My favorite is Kodama no Yu. Since I cannot let my father go to the large public bath alone, we plan to book a room with an Onsen again in the future. The meals are always beautifully presented and delicious, offering a sense of luxury beyond daily life; however, they are often too much for my parents to finish entirely, which makes me feel slightly guilty. We also enjoy the charm of the facility's vintage atmosphere.

    Great value!

    I used the last-minute discount, and the food exceeded my expectations with great taste and generous portions. There were plenty of baths, and I fully enjoyed the Onsen experience! I hope to visit again someday.
