Experience moments of pure bliss.
My spouse and I stayed for one night in a Japanese-style room with a private hot spring bath. The moment we entered, we were impressed by the atmosphere and the thoughtful attention to every detail. The room was not only spotlessly clean but also beautifully appointed, with a crisp, fresh feel that inspired a pleasant sense of awe. Soaking in the hot spring bath was deeply relaxing. Combined with the delicious food and the warm hospitality of all the staff, it made for a truly blissful stay.

It was a wonderful place to stay.
This is a long-established ryokan on the shores of Lake Shinji. The hospitality, room, food, and views were all outstanding! The route to our room was unusual, as we had to pass through the dining room, but everything was so wonderful that we hardly minded. Our room overlooked Lake Shinji, and the beautiful garden was wonderfully soothing. We were told it ranked fifth in the 2025 Japanese garden rankings. The dinner I had been looking forward to was delicately seasoned and delicious. The beautiful tableware made it a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The yadokari-yaki and kelp-cured eel grilled without sauce were particular highlights, and the dessert was exquisite too. I would love to visit Matsue again, and when I do, I hope to stay at Minamikan once more. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Once again, I was extremely satisfied with my stay.
This was our second visit since last August, when we flew from Nagoya for a whirlwind one-night trip. On that first visit, Matsue proved even more beautiful than we had imagined. This time, we stayed at Minamikan on the first night and Kasuien Minami on the second. The hospitality and food were impeccable, and we had plenty of time to relax in the hot springs. We travel widely throughout Japan, and as I wrote in last year’s review, this is “everything a traditional Japanese inn should be.” It is undoubtedly among the best in the country. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking such wonderful care of us.

We had a relaxing stay.
I stayed here with my husband. The streetscape on the way to the inn was full of charm, and the evening view of Lake Shinji was truly uplifting. Our room was spacious and spotless. The sweets and tea provided were also delicious and left us feeling completely satisfied. The in-room hot spring was set quite hot, but we were able to adjust it and enjoy a relaxing soak. The meals were a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The staff were courteous and attentive, allowing us to spend a calm, unhurried time. It was a wonderful inn.

A Wonderful, Relaxing Place to Stay
My second stay in Matsue Once again, we stayed at Minami-kan. As it was a last-minute booking, the lake-view rooms were unavailable, but instead we were able to stay in a brand-new, wonderful room with a spa sauna. More than spacious enough for two people. High-quality, comfortable sofa and bed. An open-air feel with the semi-open bath. Every dish made with plenty of carefully selected local ingredients was delicious, and even the standard kaiseki course was more than enough in quantity. We also truly appreciated the thoughtful attention from all the staff. We would love to stay here again when we visit Matsue next time. Lastly, the sunset over Lake Shinji seen from the sunset cruise was absolutely stunning.

It was a wonderful place to stay.
I’ve stayed at many ryokan and hotels, but this was the number one property for me. The baths were spotless and felt very clean. The amenities also showed thoughtful attention to detail. The meals were delicious, and the staff were polite, attentive, and very kind. It was one of the few places that truly made me want to come back again.

This was a highly satisfying place to stay in every way!
I stayed in a room with a great view of the garden. Looking out at the garden, river, and bridge, I thought how inspiring it would be for someone who writes to stay here. I enjoyed how the scenery changed from evening into night, and also savored the delicate Japanese sweets and tea provided in the room. The meals were delicious, thoughtfully prepared to highlight local ingredients. Breakfast was outstanding as well—the clam soup and sea bream rice were especially memorable. The welcome and send-off were courteous, and it was wonderful to sense how proud the staff are to work here (that kind of hospitality is rare these days). This is an inn I would love to visit again.

A Satisfying Holiday
Thank you for a wonderful holiday stay. It was disappointing that adjusting the temperature of the in-room hot spring bath was extremely difficult. Other than that, we were satisfied.

A Relaxing Inn
This was my second stay. On my first visit, I stayed in a room called Takasago, and I loved the beautiful view of Lake Shinji from the window and the incredibly delicious sea bream rice for breakfast. That’s why I decided to return when visiting Shimane again. Last time I stayed with a friend, and this time I traveled with my husband. He was also very pleased with the scenery and the food here. It’s truly a relaxing inn, and I would love to come back again.

A secluded, adults-only ryokan once visited by cultural luminaries
After staying at another ryokan, I looked for something similar and chose this property. Since my mother has knee problems, we selected a room with a sofa and bed. We stayed in the “Soso” room, which comes with a private sauna. Because we booked less than a week before our trip, all rooms on the Lake Shinji side were already sold out. However, for dinner we were shown to a private dining room where we could see the garden and Lake Shinji. I noticed some reviews complaining that they booked a good room but were seated in a private room without a garden view; I felt there may be considerations in place to accommodate guests who couldn’t secure garden-side rooms. All of the staff were genuinely hospitable, and my mother was delighted—she said that even though everyone was young, the service was attentive and well organized. Also, as Diamond members we received dashi broth and sparkling wine at dinner, which was a lovely surprise. The room was very clean as it had only recently been renovated. Being able to relax on the terrace after the sauna and cold bath felt truly luxurious. The bathrobe material was excellent too—I didn’t even need a sauna poncho. I highly recommend booking with dinner included. I usually upgrade meals, but since I’m dieting I chose the standard course—and it was still very lavish, so there’s no need to upgrade. It can be hard to find Japanese cuisine that is consistently satisfying, but even simple simmered greens were outstanding; the flavors more than matched the beautiful presentation and tableware. This is an inn where many renowned cultural figures have stayed, with paintings and calligraphy displayed throughout—it's fun to explore other floors just to see them.

Second stay—once again, it was a wonderful place to stay.
After being deeply impressed when I stayed here with my husband last year, this was our second visit—this time bringing my elderly father. The staff’s warm hospitality was unchanged, the in-room bath with a wonderful view of Lake Shinji was superb, and the meals were truly impressive both in presentation and taste. The sake you recommended was also delicious... Thanks to you, I was able to give my father a very satisfying trip, and he was delighted. The quality of the tea selection and tableware provided in the room, as well as the shampoo and conditioner, is excellent. I’m sure we’ll want to visit again. Thank you for taking such good care of us. I also accidentally checked out after leaving my phone charger in the room, but you contacted me right away and sent it to my home address. Flawless?
We stayed for about two nights on a sightseeing trip in the room called “Suetsugu.” We were very satisfied with everything—the cleanliness of the room, the well-stocked amenities, the impressive in-room bath, the view from the window (Lake Shinji), and both breakfast and dinner. The staff’s hospitality and choice of words also gave us the impression that their service standards are well established. There were two disappointing points. First, although sunken kotatsu-style or low table seating may match a Japanese modern room, it is difficult for elderly guests or those with knee or back problems to sit down and stand up comfortably. Even in such a wonderful room, it was hard to fully relax. Second was how the Shimane beef—one of their highlights—was prepared: on the first day, because the slices were thin and quite sinewy, overcooking made it dry and hard to chew; on the second day, while still somewhat thinly sliced, it was cooked more appropriately and was enjoyable. Aside from these points, we enjoyed both breakfast and dinner; however, compared with overseas five-star hotel pricing and restaurant quality within those hotels, we felt slightly disappointed.

Wonderful Accommodation
Thank you for accommodating our last-minute visit again. We were truly relieved to find a Room available. We love the in-room Onsen and the dinner! The sea bream rice at breakfast was delicious—I finished it all. I was also happy to enjoy breakfast with the garden right in front of me. Thank you very much. We were also very satisfied with how well stocked the Room amenities were. With such attentive hospitality, this is an Accommodation we will definitely want to stay at whenever we come to Matsue.

I’d love to stay here again!
I was delighted that the bath in my Room was an Onsen. The backrest angle in the tub was perfect, so I could relax comfortably. The washroom was also bright and spacious, with well-stocked amenities, a hair dryer (ReFa), and a tabletop mirror, making it very easy to spend time there. It was my first time to find fresh sweets prepared in the Room, and I was truly happy. There were also three types of tea—green tea and herbal teas—so it was fun to choose. The staff were wonderful, and the food was delicious. Enjoying a colorful sea bream ochazuke while looking out at the beautiful garden is a lovely memory for me. If I have another chance to visit Matsue, I would love to stay again—this time for a Multiple Night Stay—and relax at leisure. Thank you very much.

Special Suite “Sound of Water” with Panoramic Views of Lake Shinji
My spouse and I, in our late 40s/early 50s, stayed for two nights in September. While enjoying the terrace overlooking Lake Shinji and the Onsen in our Room, my husband had Nespresso and I enjoyed several kinds of tea—we were able to spend a truly luxurious time doing nothing. It’s conveniently located for sightseeing: about a 10-minute walk to Matsue Castle and a 2-minute walk to Karakoro Square, where the sightseeing boat pier is. There are many shops nearby, so we also enjoyed strolling around. Near Karakoro Square is Seiyoken, a Western-style restaurant known as the birthplace of Matsue’s local specialty “Katsu Rice.” The Matsue Castle sightseeing boat allows you to hop on and off as many times as you like in a day, and the boatmen’s entertaining stories are part of the charm. We got off along the way to visit a famous soba restaurant, and each time we rode we enjoyed different guidance from different boatmen. The staff’s hospitality was excellent, and we felt comfortable throughout our stay. This is a wonderful Accommodation—convenient for sightseeing yet perfect for relaxing at your own pace.

A Long-Established Ryokan You Won’t Regret Choosing
I stayed here during my trip. They kindly stored my luggage very early before check-in, so I could enjoy sightseeing comfortably before heading to the Accommodation. The Room was in a separate annex, and you reach it by passing through the dining corridor—an interesting layout. The annex itself was wonderful. With a truly traditional Japanese atmosphere, it overlooked the garden and Lake Shinji, and it was quiet and very relaxing. I visited in summer so I couldn’t see it, but I was told that in winter you can view the sunset from the Room. The hot spring water felt soft and pleasant. Every dish was delicious, and in addition to the standard menu list, there were separate notes explaining the care put into each dish, which made the meal even more enjoyable. It was also great that coffee service was available in the lounge until late after dinner. Because this is such an excellent Accommodation, there’s only one thing that would have made it even better: an extension cord. When charging my phone at night, there weren’t many accessible outlets, so I had to unplug a lamp at times. Still, this is a minor point—I believe this Accommodation is what made my first trip to Shimane so enjoyable. Thank you very much.

Relax with Panoramic Views of Lake Shinji
In any case, the Room was outstanding. With a high ceiling in a traditional Japanese house style, it offers a spacious layout where the bedroom and tatami area lead into a living room lined with large windows overlooking Lake Shinji, creating a relaxing space where you can truly unwind. After checking in, we enjoyed the refined Japanese sweets served in the Room and felt like we could watch the changing scenery of Lake Shinji forever—it was that comfortable. The scenic-view bath in the Room was also wonderful. The water quality felt great, and even though we stayed only one night, we enjoyed bathing two or three times. Meals were Japanese cuisine made with local ingredients. The soup featuring Iwami anago conger eel and flying fish dumplings was served in an earthenware pot and then portioned into bowls at the table. The final dish was uni rice made with locally sourced sea urchin. The salted squid (shiokara) kindly provided by the head chef as a sake accompaniment was excellent as well—overall, it was food that let us savor local flavors in an unpretentious style. We felt this is an Accommodation for those who value spending unhurried time on-site.

Celebratory Trip for Retirement
We were very satisfied with the attentive service and delicious food. It would have been perfect if there had been a towel rack in the restroom and pockets on the in-room loungewear. Also, we felt it would have been better if the meat dish had been served a little sooner.

My first return in about two years. The hot spring water quality and the cuisine were wonderful and did not disappoint.
I was so impressed during my previous stay by the delicious meals, high-quality Onsen, and exceptional hospitality that I decided to return. This time, it was a 4-night, 5-day trip for two with my mother, and we were very satisfied from the first night. Compared with our last visit, the staff member who showed us to our Room gave a rather brief explanation. Afterward, we had a few questions, so we asked another staff member. They first offered a polite apology—“We’re sorry our explanation was insufficient”—and then provided a detailed explanation. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding. In particular, the Dandan beef marinated in moromi miso at dinner and the clay-pot rice at breakfast were exactly to my taste. It was also refreshing to try fresh fish dipped in sesame-salt oil. The Onsen in the guest Room could be enjoyed at any time, allowing us to fully savor its excellent quality. The non-alcoholic sparkling drink provided as an IKYU Diamond Member benefit was easy to drink and paired well with the meal. For the three-sake tasting set, I chose the Special selection this time (I chose Standard last time). Since I like trying small amounts of different varieties, it’s a wonderful option—and these also complemented the food beautifully. Shimane is such an appealing place that I would love to stay here again whenever I visit in the future. Thank you very much.

A High-Quality Cultural Accommodation in Matsue City
Ryotaro Shiba once said that culture is something you can wrap yourself in and feel comfortable, and I felt that this perfectly describes Kaibi-kan. I would love to visit.

This was a wonderful...
This was a wonderful guest Room worthy of the “Special Suite Annex.” In particular, the Japanese-style Room facing Lake Shinji was a corner Room with a small Japanese garden, and we were able to relax while sitting on the veranda. It was unfortunate that we couldn’t go out onto the terrace due to the rain, but we were able to take our time soaking in the Onsen in the in-Room scenic-view bath while looking out over Lake Shinji. Each dish was excellent, and the sea bream rice at breakfast was outstanding.

If you’re visiting Matsue
The view from the second-floor guest Room overlooking Matsue Ohashi Bridge along the shore of Lake Shinji was breathtaking. With a stone bath in the center and the bedroom at the back, it was very quiet and I slept well. I love small, intimate culinary Ryokan, so when visiting Matsue I returned to Minamikan for the first time in 35 years. I truly enjoyed its unchanged charm and calm atmosphere. I finished all of the sea bream chazuke at breakfast—delicious! I was happy to receive your handwritten letter.

For dining at Hyotei
Walking through the lovely garden to our Room... I was grateful for the good weather, thinking that if it had been raining, carrying a suitcase while holding an umbrella might have been tricky. Both the Room and the food were excellent. Especially at dinner, thank you for accommodating my selfish request to start at 7:30 p.m. because I wanted to go see the sunset, and for telling me where I could view it. Just one thing: I couldn’t open the storm shutters myself in the morning and felt shut in the whole time—I really wanted to see the garden.

It was amazing!
We stayed as a couple. The Japanese-Western style Room had a calm atmosphere, and the washbasin area was spacious and easy to use. The in-room bath was always filled with hot water, so we could soak anytime, which really helped us relax. Both dinner and breakfast were wonderful; while enjoying views of Lake Shinji and the garden—ranked 6th in Japan—we couldn’t help but savor the delicious dishes along with plenty of local sake. With such outstanding hospitality, we truly felt like a lord and lady. Thank you very much.

A Trip for Two Women
We chose this place because the meal Reviews were good! They were happy with the sauna and the open-air bath. I went to the open-air bath on the second floor. It felt a bit bigger than a home bathtub. The hair dryer was old... (sad) The meals were fairly tasty. I was surprised there are no vending machines in the building! The free water in the Room didn’t suit my taste, and no matter how much I looked for a vending machine, there wasn’t one... very disappointing!! Thank you for having us for one night!

Thank you very much for your hospitality. Thanks to you, I was able to spend my birthday in a quiet, comfortable, and relaxing way. As with my previous stay, I truly enjoyed the delicious meals. I would also like to sincerely thank the Reservation staff for responding promptly and courteously to my many requests in advance. The coffee service at the Inishie Lounge Kotori was wonderful, but at certain times there was a wait, so I felt the in-room coffee machine was even more appreciated. I look forward to staying with you again on my next visit.
