    We had a relaxing stay.

    The large public bath has been renovated and is now brighter. Is the open-air bath not fed by free-flowing hot spring water? It was a bit lukewarm. I also wish there were drink service in the lounge…

    An Accommodation with Beautifully Arranged Flowers and Greenery

    The bonsai in the tokonoma alcove and the seasonal flowers arranged throughout were wonderful. The unpretentious hospitality was truly comforting. The meals were beautifully presented and delicious, and we enjoyed them very much. The local specialty eel was also excellent. This is an Accommodation I hope will stay just as it is. As for the location, since we usually travel by train, it felt refreshing to be able to walk to the roadside station.

    A wonderful accommodation that makes staying the purpose of your trip.

    We stayed in the detached “Rijin-kyo” villa. Beautiful paintings and decorative pieces were displayed throughout the property, and simply looking at them was a delight. The Room was nothing like today’s typical “Japanese-modern” style; instead, we were able to fully appreciate refined Japanese aesthetics. At the same time, we were impressed by the thoughtful touches everywhere that made our stay so comfortable. Gazing at the meticulously maintained garden from the veranda felt as if my mind was being cleansed. The cuisine was also full of seasonal character, and each dish moved us again and again with both its flavor and presentation. Our room attendant provided truly exceptional hospitality, and her subtle attentiveness was deeply soothing. The semi-open-air bath in the Room was very comfortable, allowing us to relax and enjoy the Onsen while looking out over the garden. It was a stay that made us sincerely glad we had chosen this Accommodation. As I noted in the title, it felt like a Ryokan where staying here becomes the purpose of your trip. We are grateful to Tendo-so for giving us such a wonderful time that enriched our hearts. We would love to return in another season. Thank you very much.

    We visited as a family and felt refreshed.

    Visited for the first time in nearly 20 years. I was pleasantly surprised to see how beautifully renovated the Room and bath were. We also enjoyed seasonal cuisine at a relaxed pace in a private dining room, and were very satisfied.

    An Accommodation with no consideration for guests

    It was disappointing. The Room was dim, and the Onsen uses a recirculating system with a noticeable disinfectant smell. There was no coffee or tea in the lounge, no towels in the large public bath, and only lukewarm water that smelled of chlorine. Even the coffee after breakfast was instant. The meals were excellent, but the serving timing was poor and we were kept waiting. I definitely won’t return and cannot recommend it.

    Although we stayed while a typhoon was approaching, we were able to enjoy the Onsen in a clean, bright large public bath and relax at this long-admired Accommodation. At both dinner and breakfast, the staff member assisting us was very pleasant and provided careful explanations, which made the beautifully presented dishes even more enjoyable. We had a wonderful time and would like to return in a different season.

    A stay you’ll want to book again.

    It was wonderful—balancing privacy, a sense of escape, and timeless charm, while subtly incorporating modern comforts. As for the cuisine, it was delicious as expected, but more than that: after finishing each dish, the first word that came to mind was “thank you.” With a strong sense of seasonality, beautiful presentation and color delighted us; delicate cooking brought out the best of peak ingredients so we could truly feel nature’s bounty. The staff’s thoughtful hospitality made the space even more comfortable. Thank you very much. The grilled eel was so good I jokingly thought to myself, “Is this Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star?!” as I enjoyed it. And hearing the phrase “secret technique passed down to one successor” brought back memories—I hadn’t heard those words since watching that anime.

    So close.

    The food was excellent, and we were very satisfied overall. One small concern was that the serving staff’s manner of plating and responding felt a bit too casual. Given the quality of the cuisine, I felt a more refined tone might be appropriate. Also, there was some dirt on the toilet seat in the restroom at the dining area, which bothered me. At breakfast, I noticed a chip and what looked like stains on the tea cup, which was disappointing. I hope you will continue striving to uphold your reputation as one of Yamagata’s finest Ryokan.

    The cherry blossoms were past their peak, but...

    We planned this trip looking forward to visiting the famous cherry blossom spots in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture, but we couldn’t catch up with the “cherry blossoms in bloom” that seems to come earlier each year. Still, after enjoying a very delicious dinner with just the right amount of food, we decided on a whim to head out into the Onsen town at night. Since it was a relatively warm evening, strolling along the Kuratsu River under the illuminated, dreamlike rows of cherry trees was an unforgettable hanami experience. Along with the warmth of the Accommodation, it became a wonderful memory. Thank you very much.

    Relax and unwind—total satisfaction

    Just like the exterior of the Accommodation, the Room had a tasteful yet modern design and came with a comfortable Onsen, making it truly wonderful to relax at ease as if we were at home! On top of that, each dish served at both breakfast and dinner was beautifully presented—and delicious. They even serve different varieties of Yamagata’s renowned rice for breakfast and dinner. The rice we had here on our previous visit was so good that we ended up ordering “Tsuyahime” for our own home. The large public bath is also modern and spotless, and we were able to bathe as if it were private—this was fantastic too! Even more noteworthy is how outstanding the staff’s hospitality is. You can feel their thoughtfulness even through email, and if there is leftover food they kindly make it into onigiri to take with you when you leave. From younger staff to seasoned professionals, everyone provides heartfelt service in such a natural way. That alone makes us want to come back again. Thank you very much for another wonderful stay!

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    My daughter was transferred to Tendo City, so our family stayed at Tendo-so while helping her move.\nAlthough it is a very historic Ryokan, the Room and garden were beautifully maintained, and the large public bath had been renovated as well, so our whole family had a truly wonderful stay.\nThe cuisine was also outstanding, and we fully enjoyed spring with our eyes, taste buds, and sense of smell.\nNot only the attendant who took care of us, but all the staff offered thoughtful attention to detail and warm greetings, which made us feel genuinely welcomed.\nWe would love to stay again.

    A lovely, tranquil Ryokan

    I stayed here with my partner for our anniversary. We visit an Onsen somewhere every month, and this place was wonderfully calm, allowing us to spend a truly lovely time. The meals were delicious, and the staff at the Ryokan were very attentive. This is an Accommodation we would definitely like to visit again.

    We had a relaxing stay as a couple.

    I finally had the chance to stay here after being recommended by an acquaintance for a long time. The service, food, and Onsen were all wonderful. The portion sizes were just right. The Onsen was not free-flowing from the source, but it was clean. The Room is in a traditional old-style building with a charming atmosphere, but during this season the drafts made it a bit cold. I think the cleaning is thorough as well. Still, I would like to stay again. Thank you.

    The best time

    This was our first stay since the renovation. We thoroughly enjoyed both the meals and the Room at this Accommodation, and spent a relaxing time as a family. We would love to visit again.

    I was very satisfied!

    It was a wonderful Accommodation where you could truly feel the strong attention to detail in the hospitality, meals, interior design, baths, and more. As it used to be an eel restaurant, perhaps because of that, the food in particular was closer to a proper kappo-style dining experience than typical Ryokan fare, and it was absolutely delicious.

    The hospitality is excellent.

    While we were walking along the road in front of the entrance, a staff member came outside to welcome us. After that, the staff in charge of our Room always greeted us with a bright smile, and at check-out several staff members saw us off. We felt outstanding hospitality from start to finish, and we were able to spend our stay smiling the whole time. The meals were delicious, and the portions were just right. The Room was spacious and impeccably clean—truly wonderful—but if I may mention a few disappointments: there was only about one available power outlet, which made charging phones inconvenient. I was also disappointed that the Wi-Fi speed was slow. In addition, it would have been nice to be able to adjust the temperature of the open-air bath in the Room ourselves. It wasn’t enough to call someone over to change it, but I prefer slightly lukewarm water, so being able to adjust it myself would have made for an even more relaxing soak.

    There is a lounge for relaxation, but no complimentary beverages such as coffee are provided. The services are lacking considering the high accommodation fee.

    Traveling with my elderly mother

    We have been taking our mother to an Onsen girls' trip a few times a year when my sister comes home. This time, after much discussion with my sister about where to go, we decided on Tendo-so. We had visited before and enjoyed it, but the newly renovated large bath, spacious and updated room, and the semi-open-air bath in the room were deciding factors. Winter in Yamagata is cold, and my sister coming from Tokyo feels the chill deeply. Our elderly mother might not use an open-air bath in winter due to health concerns. As expected, she didn’t use the open-air bath in the large bathing area but was delighted with the semi-open-air bath in our room. The new room was warm with beautiful furnishings and very spacious for three of us to relax comfortably together. We also enjoyed having meals served in our room—delicious dishes with refined flavors that suited us perfectly, using high-quality ingredients presented on elegant tableware. The three of us shared old stories and various conversations while dining together; our mother expressed her happiness by saying how truly blessed she felt. She mentioned that although she’s healthy now, there’s no guarantee for how long she can continue these trips—and as long as possible—she wants to keep going on them. My sister and I agreed that we want to take her while she's still healthy enough to enjoy it. Tendo-so was perfect for such a trip! The staff treated us wonderfully throughout our stay—it was such a pleasant experience overall. Thank you so much for your hospitality! We look forward to visiting again soon!

    The 57th Annual BD Stay...

    This year, I struggled to find a truly wonderful accommodation... but after several disappointments, I finally found it!!! The best of this year... no, one of the top-class Ryokans I've ever stayed at. What makes it amazing? Everything is impeccably maintained! Truly outstanding. In terms of maintenance ranking, it's the best I've ever experienced—no doubt about it. Meals are served in your room for both dinner and breakfast, allowing you to enjoy them stress-free! The quality and quantity are perfectly balanced. And the hospitality? Absolutely excellent! The perfect level of attentiveness without being intrusive. However, just one point: It's unfortunate that the Onsen is not free-flowing but uses a circulation system. If it were free-flowing with only added water, it would have been perfect. That aside, this is undoubtedly a top-class Onsen accommodation overall. I look forward to visiting again next year with hopes for free-flowing hot springs in the future. Thank you so much for even handling my forgotten items with such care—I deeply appreciate it here as well. Thank you very much for your exceptional hospitality during my stay!

    60th Birthday Celebration

    I stayed at the accommodation on December 5th to celebrate my 60th birthday. I believe it was in the detached room "Benihana." The room, with an additional space, had an atmosphere reminiscent of Yagyu-no-Sho in Shuzenji and exuded a mood similar to Junichiro Tanizaki's "In Praise of Shadows." The view of the garden from the room was also beautiful, featuring a serene Japanese-style garden. Stepping outside from the room, there was an open-air bath carved out of a large stone. The water temperature was just right, and being able to enjoy it 24 hours a day made for a wonderfully warming experience. At the dining venue next door, I celebrated my 60th birthday. The staff's thoughtful hospitality was incredibly kind. Each dish in the kaiseki meal that arrived one by one was absolutely exquisite. Midway through the celebration banquet, a cake for my birthday and a surprise party cracker prepared by my daughters were brought out. Following that, I received an unexpected bouquet from my brother as his gift—a stunning arrangement unlike anything I'd ever seen before—which left me astonished and deeply moved. I never imagined he would be so considerate; it filled me with emotion. I shared some words with my wife and daughters who celebrated with me: how I was born here in Tendo Onsen 60 years ago; how I attended Tendo Chubu Elementary School before moving on to Second Junior High School; how we were too poor during elementary school days to travel anywhere. Reflecting on these memories while speaking overwhelmed me emotionally—I remember shedding tears during this moment. When we took commemorative photos afterward, my eyes happened upon a hanging scroll in the alcove that read “Shu-shi Issai.” As soon as I saw it, waves of emotion surged within me. I interpreted its meaning as twofold: 1) A message from you all at this accommodation expressing your utmost sincerity toward guests. 2) A reflection on reaching this milestone age—acknowledging that I've lived life earnestly up until now. When asking one of your staff members at the lounge whether this hanging scroll had been recently changed for any reason related specifically towards our eventful evening’s setting arrangements—they informed us kindly about how even such details like changing decor elements were thoughtfully done under Okami-san’s direction solely dedicated towards enhancing guest experiences further beyond expectations! Her selfless love truly touched hearts profoundly! Reflecting upon everything—including even small gestures tied back into meaningful symbols like those found within calligraphy art pieces displayed prominently throughout spaces—it becomes clear why such accommodations stand apart uniquely amongst others alike elsewhere globally today! This ryokan is truly exceptional!     It was very relaxing.

    I stayed at this accommodation during a trip with my mother. The "Aotake" room with a semi-open-air bath was clean and convenient, and the onsen had soft, soothing water. Both dinner and breakfast were carefully prepared and delicious, and the attentive service from the staff was very pleasant. Additionally, they kindly provided a kotatsu upon my mother's request, which made our stay even warmer and more comfortable. This accommodation is highly recommended for those looking to relax and unwind.

    Enjoyed the late autumn at Tendoso.

    For this trip to Yamagata, I chose Tendo because I wanted to stay at Tendo-so. It was an excellent accommodation, just as the reviews said, and I was very satisfied! The room I stayed in was the Higashitei Wa Suite (Aotake), which I liked from the website. It looked exactly like the photos, was beautiful, and had a spacious bath where I could relax. The meals were exceptional—featuring specialties like eel and imoni stew on the first night, followed by matsutake mushroom tempura and sukiyaki on the second night. Every dish, including soups and pickles, was absolutely delicious. The attentiveness and warm smiles of the staff made my stay even more pleasant. Thanks to them, it turned out to be a truly satisfying trip! I'll definitely visit again in a different season.

    The accommodation had excellent taste in displays and furniture, making it very comfortable. The meals were all delicious and reflected the seasons, with the eel being particularly special. The service provided by the staff was outstanding, making dining a delightful experience. The room's onsen allowed for a relaxing soak while enjoying views of the garden, warming you to the core and relieving fatigue. It was quiet at night, allowing for a restful sleep. They value local specialties and crafts from Tendo City (Yamagata Prefecture), and I couldn't resist purchasing some myself—such wonderful items that made me happy. It’s such an amazing accommodation that I already want to visit again, even though I just returned home.

    We stayed here for a family trip. The staff kindly provided a special chair for the bath to accommodate a family member with mobility issues, which was incredibly helpful. The meals were exceptionally delicious, likely reflecting the inn's history as an eel restaurant, and the eel dishes exceeded our expectations. Since we visited just after the autumn equinox, enjoying the open-air bath while feeling the crisp autumn breeze both at night and in the morning was truly refreshing and unforgettable.     Accommodation That Will Make You Fall in Love with Yamagata

    A truly wonderful Ryokan accommodation based on a beautifully maintained traditional Japanese house. Since it was a Sunday stay, the place was quiet throughout, and we could enjoy facilities like the large public bath, lounge room, and dining room almost exclusively to ourselves. Also, both dinner and breakfast were exceptional. The grilled eel rice box served at dinner was particularly outstanding. Despite its age, the accommodation is incredibly clean and comfortable. It’s such an amazing space that it made me wish for a vacation home like this traditional Japanese house. The staff's hospitality was impeccable as well. I will definitely return!
