A stay where the quality of the Facility unfortunately did not match the level of service.

I visited Matsue to see my newborn grandchild and stayed at Naniwa Issui again, where I had stayed before. When we arrived from the airport by rental car, we were abruptly told—before we could even unload our luggage—that the parking lot was full and we would need to use an off-site parking area. However, a car that arrived almost at the same time was allowed to park on the premises, while my car—only a few dozen seconds later because I yielded the way—was sent elsewhere. This response made no sense. Moreover, despite there clearly being available spaces on-site, we were told they were being kept for guests who had gone out. In other words, it was not first-come, first-served; instead, they operate under a unique rule of “guaranteeing the space for whoever parked there first.” It felt unfair and left me very uncomfortable from the moment we arrived. The same lack of fairness continued in the dining venue: even though I arrived earlier, a couple who came later was shown to their seats first. Naniwa Issui has an excellent location with wonderful views right in front of Lake Shinji, and the Facility itself is very impressive—the exterior and guest room atmosphere are also lovely—which only made the poor quality of service operations stand out even more. It was extremely disappointing that service did not match the level of the Facility; I could not understand what kind of service policy this Ryokan follows, and it ended up being a regrettable stay.

I want to enjoy the Onsen even in a wheelchair.

Many Accommodations claim to be barrier-free, but when you actually visit, most fall short. This place doesn’t feel like an afterthought; it seems to have been designed with accessibility in mind from the very start. I’ve never experienced anywhere that allows wheelchair access all the way into the Onsen. The powered shower chair provides real peace of mind. It’s also great that the living-room table height can be adjusted. Of course, the toilet is spacious and makes assisting easy as well. If you’re going this far, it would be even better if the washbasin could also be used from a wheelchair. A bed with side rails to prevent falls would also be helpful. Why not refine it even further from a wheelchair user’s perspective?

    I fully enjoyed Lake Shinji.

Even though we hadn’t reserved a Room with a bath, you kindly upgraded us to a Room with an open-air bath, and both my mother and I were able to relax and enjoy it while feeling the evening breeze from Lake Shinji. Since neither of us drinks alcohol, you replaced the aperitif with delicious plum juice, and you also took care to accommodate my mother, who doesn’t like carrots—your staff’s thoughtfulness was wonderful. This is an Accommodation I would recommend to friends who want to travel to Izumo.

    A mother-and-daughter trip for two.

We were welcomed at the entrance, completed a seated check-in, and when we arrived on our Room floor, the lovely aroma (bergamot) made us feel wonderful. Our Room was upgraded for us. The open-air bath in the Room was spacious and very relaxing. The large public bath was also excellent. Dinner was delicious from start to finish. The Shimane wine as an aperitif was so good that we also had a glass of white wine—and the tasting of three local sakes was outstanding. The meal included wagyu simmered in wine, simmered nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), Shimane wagyu shabu-shabu, and unameshi—all incredibly tasty. I was completely full and thought I could only manage dessert, but I ended up finishing everything. So full! Breakfast was also wonderful—the freshly grilled overnight-dried conger eel was amazing. And my favorite treat, the shijimi clam miso soup, had large clams and a light flavor; it naturally made me let out an “ah,” like something out of Bakébaké-style folklore. All of the staff were polite and kind, and we felt very comfortable throughout our stay. It turned into a great trip, and we would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    A quiet, relaxing accommodation

Thank you for upgrading us from Room 203 to Room 205. Since we were traveling as a couple without a car, we chose an Accommodation with convenient access and no group tours. Even though our Room was near the dining area, we couldn’t hear any clattering of dishes; everything was very clean; the ice bars in the bath and the well-stocked amenities were great; and we enjoyed private dining. It was a quiet, relaxing Accommodation where we could take our time and unwind. I was happy to see a fan in the washroom, but I didn’t notice it at first and couldn’t figure out how to use it, which felt like a missed opportunity. For meals, I loved the original plum dressing so much that I bought some. The greetings were polite, and we could really feel the staff’s care and effort to make guests comfortable. It will be nice to see the younger staff continue to grow. If it were closer, this would be our go-to place—overall, we were very satisfied.

    The view was absolutely wonderful.

We had a very enjoyable stay. The bath water temperature was just right. However, there were many insects floating in the water, which was quite unsettling. When we closed the curtains, the Room became dark; it would have been nice to have sheer curtains as well. Thank you for accommodating the foods we cannot eat at breakfast. We wanted to go out into the garden, but there were only stone steps and we couldn’t access it; a ramp would have been helpful. It would have been nice to have ice nearby; we had to go down to the first floor to get it. There were not enough tissues or trash bins, which was inconvenient since we had children. The view from the window was wonderful. We enjoyed our stay.

Thank you very much for your continued support.

As we live in Saitama, we cannot travel again anytime soon, but we would love to visit again. The hospitality was truly wonderful, and everything—from the souvenir shop and large public bath to the Room, the view, and the meals—was simply delicious. We also enjoyed the beautiful presentation and tableware. The Room was thoroughly cleaned, so we could relax with complete peace of mind. From the bath in our Room, we had an exclusive view of Lake Shinji all to ourselves. The Japanese sweets prepared in the Room were also very delicious. We were able to unwind both physically and mentally. Thank you very much. We would love to visit again.

The view of Lake Shinji was excellent.

In the morning, it was wonderful to watch the boats head out—probably for freshwater clam fishing—and begin their work.

A Hotel that doesn’t arrange taxis...

Overall, the views are wonderful, and soaking in the open-air bath on the balcony while looking out over Lake Shinji is pure bliss. The meals are also excellent. However, for a high-end Ryokan of this caliber, it is unacceptable that they do not arrange taxis. I had heard that taxi availability in Matsue can be limited, but stopping the service because it is difficult and making guests arrange taxis themselves feels unreasonable. I had made a Reservation at what is said to be the best Italian restaurant in town, but even though I tried to arrange a taxi more than 24 hours in advance, none could be secured. It was too far to walk, so I had no choice but to Cancel the Reservation at the restaurant. It was very disappointing.

A long-established culinary Ryokan founded in 1918—so memorable you’ll want to fly back again.

We stayed here for a 2-night, 3-day couples’ trip from May 13 to 15, 2026, visiting the Adachi Museum of Art and Izumo Taisha Shrine. At first, we considered staying one night at an Accommodation closer to Izumo Taisha Shrine, but the overwhelmingly beautiful views convinced us to choose a Multiple Night Stay here. (Room & View) Because we couldn’t make a Reservation for the same Room on both nights, we booked two different Room types. Night 1: 5th Floor Special Floor “Mizu to Kumo no Sho” [Mizu Room No. 2] — Japanese-style Hollywood Twin with Open-air Bath With its design featuring extensive clear glass (including the balcony railing), the Room was exceptionally bright. Enjoying the open-air bath while feeling at one with Lake Shinji and the sky—and with a pleasant breeze—was truly refreshing for both body and mind. Night 2: 2nd Floor Design Floor MINAMO [Room 203] — 12-tatami Japanese-style Room with Scenic-view Bath This was a classic Ryokan style where staff lay out the futons. There is no balcony, and the windows cannot be opened. Since people and cars pass on the road in front, it may take some courage to keep the blinds up and enjoy the Lake Shinji view while bathing. Please note that our rating of “5” for “Guest Rooms & Amenities” and “Onsen & Baths” applies to Mizu Room No. 2 on the 5th floor; for Room 203 it would be “4.” (Dining) As an established culinary Ryokan founded in Taisho 7 (1918), the meals were truly outstanding—something you can only experience here. The delicately light seasoning suited our taste perfectly, and we found ourselves naturally reaching for more. We were deeply impressed by how much more elevated dinner and breakfast felt on our second day (perhaps because of our Multiple Night Stay?). For reference, here are some of the main dishes from dinner on Day 1 and Day 2: Grilled dishes: Miso-marinated grilled conger eel; grilled nodoguro layered with scallops Simmered dishes: Simmered nodoguro; simmered sea bream Main dish: Shimane Wagyu shabu-shabu; Shimane Wagyu sukiyaki Rice dish: Naniwa specialty “Ouname-shi” (the Ryokan’s original dish dating back to the Edo period); Nodoguro rice (Hospitality) While maintaining an appropriate sense of distance, their warm manner of speaking and attentive gestures helped us relax as a couple. That said—speaking frankly—the service quality varied significantly depending on staff experience, so there still seems to be room to refine consistency across service standards. To everyone at Naniwa Issui, It was our first time in Matsue, but thanks to all of you it became an unforgettable trip unlike any we’ve had before. Thank you very much. We will fly back again to visit. That’s all.

Explore filming locations from Japan’s morning drama series.

My first trip to Shimane… I explored the area while playfully getting into character as Toki-chan from the morning drama “Bakebake” (laughs). The Accommodation was a wonderful Ryokan with truly attentive hospitality. Thank you very much.

A Ryokan you’ll want to return to!

After seeing it on YouTube before, it looked like such a wonderful place that I really wanted to visit—and this time I finally could. I made a Reservation for “Mizu no 3.” The Room, bath, and bed were even better than I imagined, and I was amazed the moment I walked in. The meals were delicately seasoned and very satisfying. Above all, the magnificent view of Lake Shinji through the large windows was truly refreshing. I would definitely like to return again.

This Accommodation offered truly wonderful hospitality.

The Room and meals were wonderful, but above all, the hospitality of the staff was outstanding. I was truly impressed that each person provided attentive service tailored to guests, not just following a manual. Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for hosting us during our trip to the Adachi Museum of Art. In addition to the wonderful location overlooking Lake Shinji, your staff’s heartfelt hospitality and the delicious meals—beautifully presented—made our stay truly special. Thank you again.

    Lovely Room

We were able to relax in a Room with an open-air bath and views of Lake Shinji. Dining in a private Room allowed us to eat at our own pace without worrying about others. The simmered blackthroat seaperch was delicious. We would definitely like to stay again if we have the opportunity.

I took the plunge and traveled solo, and I truly appreciate that you upgraded my Room—it made the trip an even more wonderful memory. Everything was spotlessly clean; it’s amazing how thorough the cleaning is. The entire Room, the bathroom area, the windows, and even the large public bath were all impeccably clean and felt great. The Room also had an Onsen bath that was always at a comfortable temperature, so I could relax at any time. The desserts in the refrigerator were delicious, and both dinner and breakfast were perfectly portioned. The flavors were excellent, with a well-balanced menu overall—I was very satisfied. The in-Room amenities, towels, and bathrobe were all high quality and thoughtfully provided. I was also happy that the hair dryer was the same model I use at home! If I had to mention one thing, it would be nice to have pajamas provided, and it would be great if items like a hair iron could be available for loan. All of your staff were pleasant, with service that was neither excessive nor lacking—which I imagine is subtly difficult—and it was wonderful. There were moments when their Japanese didn’t feel quite fluent, but they worked hard and left a very positive impression. For this memorable solo trip, I’m really glad I chose Naniwa Issui. With prices rising everywhere these days, I’m sure things aren’t easy—but at this price point my satisfaction level is extremely high. I’d love to visit again—please keep up the great work. Thank you very much.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

I chose a plan without dinner, but the breakfast was very delicious. The room was luxurious and allowed me to relax. Lake Shinji was much better than I imagined. It's a pity I forgot to use the provided telescope. I would love to visit this accommodation again if I have the chance. Thank you very much!

    Recommended accommodation.

I stayed with a friend in a room with an open-air bath. The room was clean, and the large public bath was also spotless. Amenities were perfect. Soft drinks like coffee are always available in the lobby. The meals were very delicious, making this accommodation highly recommended.

Almost there! Just a little more for all 5 stars!

Highly satisfied, but: 1. The initial explanations at the front desk are overwhelming and easy to forget when given all at once. 2. The free drinks in the lobby are great, but it would be nice if alcohol was also offered. I bought some from the shop to drink, and I imagine many others do the same! 3. It would be wonderful to have a wider selection of local craft beers. The staff, especially during meals, were very friendly and created a great atmosphere!

Recently, I stayed with my family member who uses a wheelchair. As an accommodation focusing on accessibility, thoughtful features were noticeable throughout the facility. Although we couldn't book a room with a lift and had some difficulty with bathing, we managed to use the shower chair. The staff were all very kind and made our stay extremely pleasant. The meals were also delicious, allowing us to enjoy local flavors.

A Ryokan with Delicious Cuisine and Stunning Views

The cuisine was incredibly delicious, especially the simmered blackthroat seaperch and conger eel (miso-marinated and overnight-dried), which were exceptional. The sashimi was not ordinary either, featuring fresh fish like Spanish mackerel that were satisfying to eat. The soy sauce was also excellent. We also enjoyed the "Ouname-shi" dish. Even at high-end Ryokans, dinner is not always guaranteed to be delicious, but this place truly stands out. Located by Lake Shinji with a stunning lake view, the Facility and services are impeccable. Although we couldn't see the sunset over Lake Shinji due to cloudy weather, we were able to witness a beautiful sunrise (photo: the spaceship-like building is Shimane Art Museum).

The corner Room is surrounded by a balcony, offering views of both the lake and Matsue Castle, which was a delightful surprise. The panoramic bath felt like an open-air bath when the windows were fully opened, providing a very refreshing experience. It was unfortunate that we couldn't see the sunset due to the weather. The intricate latticework in the hallway, as well as the fabric, wall, and ceiling decorations in the Room, were absolutely stunning and charming.

Expect more from our service than just the box.

Stayed here after several years and found the room and facilities to be impressive with significant investment. However, I was disappointed with the service outside of meals. Perhaps due to a late check-in, the process from car guidance to check-in and being shown to the room felt overly segmented. While polite, it lacked a sense of genuine hospitality. For instance, heavy luggage had to be unloaded far from parking spaces while family members waited standing at the entrance. The front desk provided lengthy explanations that could have been read instead, followed by instructions to find our own way to the room. Upon reaching the room—despite its stunning view—the overall experience felt diminished compared to expectations given its price point, especially after staying at another Ryokan in Tamatsukuri Onsen with exceptional service despite an older building. On a positive note, dinner facilities and service were excellent (breakfast was average but cost-conscious). However, staying in a special suite with an open-air bath on the same floor as dining made it less relaxing than anticipated; I would have preferred a standard room on a separate floor for more privacy. Additionally, while there was an observation bath in-room, being instructed to lower blinds negated its purpose as an "observation" bath. This accommodation may appeal to those who prioritize luxurious facilities but might not meet expectations for seasoned travelers familiar with similarly priced Ryokans offering superior service. My critique stems from having stayed here four times before when it was my favorite Ryokan in this region. The issues seem rooted in management rather than individual staff performance—I hope improvements will be made moving forward.

The Best View, The Best Memories

I stayed here for a solo trip to celebrate my 60th birthday. I arrived a bit early as I was slightly tired from sightseeing, but the front desk staff kindly allowed me to check in first. While waiting for my room to be ready, I enjoyed complimentary drinks in the lobby with a view of Lake Shinji. When I entered the room, the view from the window was like a postcard! The room also had its own private bath, which was truly impressive. Meals were served in private dining rooms assigned per guestroom, ensuring comfort and privacy. I could relax without encountering other guests much at all. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious! I often stay at high-class accommodations, but this Onsen accommodation had the best facilities and service I've experienced so far. There’s still more of Matsue left for me to explore, so I will definitely come back again someday. Thank you for creating such wonderful memories!
