    Simply wonderful.

This is a small Ryokan with a strong sense of history, and as soon as you step through the entrance, you are welcomed by a classic Japanese Ryokan that blends beautifully with nature. The attentive service from the staff and the view of Kakusenkei Gorge from the Room made for a wonderful welcome. The Onsen is also small, but it was calm and very relaxing. Most impressive of all was the dining experience—every detail, from the food to the presentation and tableware, was outstanding. This is an Accommodation I would definitely like to return to.

    Thank you for your support.

We stayed here on a family trip to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and the special dishes and high level of service were excellent—everyone in our family left very satisfied. It is a little away from the city center, so we were able to relax comfortably in a quiet atmosphere.

Thank you very much for a wonderful stay.

Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality. Every meal was delicious, and we felt truly satisfied both in body and mind. We were also able to relax and fully enjoy the Onsen. Our attendant was kind, pleasant, and a great conversationalist. Everyone else was also welcoming, and we truly appreciated your thoughtful care. It was a great help that you looked after our luggage while we went for a walk before departure. Thank you again very much. We would love to visit again if we have the opportunity.

I was able to enjoy an extraordinary space and a leisurely pace of time.

Although we stayed for only one night, we were able to relax from arrival to departure. While we usually live with one eye on the clock, this Accommodation offered just the right level of hospitality and a comfortable setting where we could enjoy uninterrupted time as a family. We are often concerned about salt in everyday meals, but both dinner and breakfast were delicate, refined, and thoroughly satisfying. The service was flawless in every respect, making it a wonderful experience.

    Wonderful

To start, this Ryokan is an old building. Therefore, it is not recommended for those who are uncomfortable with older buildings. It may not suit those who prefer a clean, modern reinforced-concrete Hotel. However, it is highly recommended for those who enjoy an old yet atmospheric building. We stayed in a special Room called “Jurakudai.” We heard that the Room was once used as a villa... The Room itself is old, but it has very elaborate craftsmanship. The transom carvings are especially impressive—truly wonderful. Buildings with transom carvings are rare these days, and I think they are worth staying here to see. The food was also delicious. Partway through the meal, there was a Western-style beef stew dish, and it was excellent. Apparently they also offer a Western-style course meal, and this dish made me want to try it. The cuisine was outstanding. We were very satisfied from welcome to farewell. It’s a wonderful Ryokan, and we would like to stay again.

It may be time to rethink not only the Facility, but also our approach to hospitality.

For my first trip to Yamanaka Onsen, I chose this Accommodation based on its Reviews. They picked us up at Kagaonsen Station, and after check-in it was one surprise after another. I understood it was an old building, and while creaky floors are unavoidable, at least the carpets should be replaced—especially in what must be a humid area. The cleaning was thorough, and we were welcomed in our Room with matcha and sweets, but the older attendant immediately started complaining: “People here are old-fashioned, and there’s no staff anyway,” and “Cheap places are all foreign staff—well, you know.” When we found a mosquito in the Room and my companion tried to catch it, she just said, “Well, if temperatures rise this much, you’ll get mosquitoes,” so I ended up going to a convenience store myself to buy mosquito repellent spray. I honestly think hiring motivated international staff and training them would be far better than keeping someone like this. The Room itself felt dated. The fresh flowers and furnishings were lovely, but there was an old-style safe sitting prominently under the small TV, and the layout was inconvenient. As expected at this type of place, everything in the refrigerator was chargeable. In the bath area as well—even in the open-air bath—there were soggy leaves settled at the bottom. The meals were all delicious, and an older male staff member served us earnestly. However, there were many stewed dishes (including beef stew made by the head chef’s son), and even grilled items like shirayaki eel were served simmered afterward; I would have preferred the beef grilled if possible. I also wrote this in the questionnaire: the tarte Tatin dessert was overly sweet. Breakfast was tasty too, but no fruit at the end—was that regional style or cost-cutting? The worst part was the bedding. The mattress futon was essentially two thin “rice-cracker” futons stacked together. Thinking it would hurt our backs as-is, we stacked three ourselves instead—but then my neck hurt instead. With only seven Rooms total here (I believe), they could consider investing in higher-end functional bedding such as Nishikawa or Airweave. The curtains were also shockingly worn out and thin; it became bright after 5 a.m., so we couldn’t sleep well. When I mentioned the bedding issue to that older male staff member at breakfast time later on, he showed no concern and said matter-of-factly: “We stack three for foreigners.” Afterward I asked an acquaintance in Kanazawa who said that apparently the entire Onsen town is struggling overall. The staff were kind on paper overall—but this level of disappointing stay at this price point was a first for me. A place I stayed at in Fukushima this spring is also old but had been updated not only through renovation but with service suited to modern expectations—thoughtful down to every detail. Ultimately it may come down to management decisions.

    We had a wonderful time!

We stayed here as a family. Because there are only a few Rooms, the Onsen felt almost private, and we were able to relax quietly at our own pace. It was a very comfortable Ryokan. They upgraded our Room, and the meals also came with extra service—both the quantity and quality were outstanding, and everything was truly delicious. We are grateful for the Ryokan’s hospitality throughout our stay. Thank you very much. We are truly glad we chose this Ryokan. It became a wonderful memory!

    French Dinner Cuisine

This time, we chose a French course meal, which is rare for this kind of Accommodation. We were very satisfied. Breakfast was Japanese cuisine as usual, and my wife was impressed, saying this kind of stay is nice too. Outside the Room was a wooden deck, and the cherry blossom petals in the breeze, the scent of fresh green leaves, and the birdsong were truly wonderful. I’m 77 now, but I would love to stay here again.

Thank you very much for your kind support.

My mother, younger brother, younger sister, and I stayed at Jurakudai in December. After my father’s sudden passing and my overseas assignment/business trips, I hadn’t been able to properly celebrate my mother’s 77th and 80th birthdays. After much thought, I made a Reservation believing that staying at Jurakudai with Kocho was the best way for her to truly enjoy herself—and it exceeded all expectations. My mother (and my brother and sister as well) were delighted, and even months later I’m convinced it was the best choice. Jurakudai is wonderfully luxurious, yet it also has a nostalgic Showa-era charm. It seemed to remind my mother of her family home before it was rebuilt, and she relaxed into that comforting atmosphere. The large indoor bath and open-air bath also brought back memories for her, and she took her time enjoying them at a very leisurely pace. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent in both quality and quantity—just as when my spouse and I stayed previously. The clearest proof is that my elderly mother finished everything without leaving a single bite. Our attendant was also incredibly entertaining, adding an extra touch that made our time even more enjoyable. At the very end an unexpected situation occurred, causing trouble for you all, and I feel truly sorry about that. However, thanks to the kindness and consideration of everyone on your team—especially the president—we were able to complete our trip without any major issues. We are deeply grateful. With sincere thanks once again, we would love to visit again in the future—please accept this as our Review.

    A cozy, home-like accommodation

It was a small, homey Accommodation that made me want to say “I’m home!” the moment I walked through the gate. The service struck a perfect balance—attentive without being intrusive—and their warm smiles were truly pleasant. Every dish was of outstanding quality, beautifully presented and perfectly seasoned—exactly what you’d expect from a Ryokan with restaurant-level dining. I was also touched that, thanks to the chef’s thoughtfulness, we were served additional items beyond the set menu. The only disappointment was the veranda mat and chairs; their color and design felt out of place and seemed to detract from the refined atmosphere of this long-established property. The following comments are not for Kocho, but for the Yamanaka Onsen tourism association. ● The Ayatori Bridge illumination? was disappointing—the colors were overly flashy. And because there are so few lights spaced far apart, it actually feels sparse and unsophisticated. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the lighting plan itself. ● There were no trash bins in sight on the main shopping street, which was inconvenient. Thank you very much for everything. I’d love to come back again and say “I’m home!”

    Graduation Trip

We stayed here for our graduation trip. The food was incredibly delicious, and it was the first time I had ever been able to enjoy such amazing meals at an Accommodation—I was truly impressed. The Room was also very clean, and the in-room open-air bath was wonderful. The Japanese garden was beautiful as well. The staff member who assisted us explained the Accommodation and nearby shops clearly and courteously, which we really appreciated. Thanks to that, we had a great time. It became a truly wonderful final trip of our student life. Thank you very much.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We stayed as a couple in a Room with a private open-air bath. With an early check-in and late check-out, we were able to enjoy relaxing baths before dinner and before breakfast. The water temperature was just right, and the Onsen water felt smooth and wonderful. Dinner was served in a private dining room attached to our Room, with each dish brought out one by one, so we could take our time and enjoy a delicious meal. It was the perfect Accommodation for unwinding after a long time, and we were very satisfied.

Thank you for a wonderful stay...

We took a late summer vacation and visited Yamanaka Onsen for the first time as a couple. Due to our busy daily lives, our main purpose was not to explore the onsen town or nearby tourist spots but to relax and refresh at a ryokan while celebrating an anniversary. Therefore, we booked one night each in the suite rooms of two representative ryokans of this onsen area. Both were uniquely charming in their own way, leaving us with unforgettable memories of this wonderful trip. Recently, many historic ryokans have been completely rebuilt into modern structures at various onsen destinations. However, this accommodation has taken gradual steps to ensure that current guests are not inconvenienced while preserving its Taisho (or perhaps Showa?) era romantic charm—a true example of "old yet good" in every sense. The large bathhouse with a subtle view of Ayatori Bridge, the small salon furnished with vintage Maruni furniture and a piano from yesteryears, the exhibition space utilizing an old storehouse for collections, and the beautiful Japanese garden—all these elements may lack flashiness but create an atmosphere that is serene and calming wherever you are within the ryokan. For us as a couple, it was truly one-of-a-kind. Of course, it wasn’t just about the facilities; we also deeply appreciated Mr./Ms. M’s thoughtful hospitality during our stay as well as the meals that were exceptional in both quality and quantity. It’s surprisingly rare nowadays to find accommodations where you can be satisfied with both aspects when it comes to dining. Thank you once again for your hospitality during our stay. Because this experience was so wonderful, we have made another reservation at Jurakudai for December—a long-awaited trip including my mother and siblings (four people total). Due to my father’s sudden passing and my overseas assignments/business trips over recent years, I haven’t been able to properly celebrate milestones like my mother’s 77th or 80th birthdays. I believe there is no better place than Kochou where she can fully enjoy herself. We’re already looking forward to creating new memories!

    French

We were upgraded to a two-room suite and enjoyed a luxurious time dining in the adjacent room. This Room is perfect for spending time with family. We had French cuisine prepared by the owner's son, who seems to be training in French cooking. Unfortunately, the dishes were served on cold plates, which made the food cool down quickly. Perhaps a bit more practice is needed.

A traditional Japanese-style Ryokan with French cuisine!?

I made the reservation after being informed that French Kaiseki was available. Staying at a traditional Japanese-style Ryokan offering French cuisine was very intriguing. The owner's son, who is a chef specializing in French cuisine, prepared an authentic French course meal, which was absolutely delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of dishes and would love to visit again.

This was our first stay, and we visited as a couple. Upon arrival, we were served matcha and traditional Japanese sweets, which were delicious. Green tea was also prepared for us as a palate cleanser. The room was spacious and quiet, and we could hear the soothing sounds of insects, allowing us to relax and unwind. The meals were truly delicious, and we even enjoyed dishes not listed on the menu, though we ended up feeling quite full. The highlight of our stay was the onsen. We chose Yamanaka Onsen for its wonderful aroma, and it truly became a memorable accommodation. Thank you for your hospitality.

    Meals are disappointing.

Overall, I had a pleasant stay without any major issues. They even served meals as part of the service. However, there were many dishes featuring sea bream, which felt a bit overwhelming for this season. Perhaps choosing the French cuisine option would have been better. Keep up the good work!

I’ve stayed at several places in Yamanaka Onsen, and this time I visited because Kochou’s Shirasen has been renovated. The building itself is old, but the renovated Room was spacious and comfortable, and I rarely ran into other guests, which made for a very relaxing stay. The meals were especially outstanding, and I was completely satisfied with both dinner and breakfast.

    I felt completely refreshed.

The sound of the river and the wind was so soothing that I spent hours just listening to it. The staff were incredibly kind and comforting, which truly healed my weary heart. Dinner was meticulously prepared and made for an enjoyable meal. It was a bit disappointing to only have time for one bath, but next time, I’d love to stay for two nights!

A charming Ryokan with a comfortable open-air bath in the Room and excellent cuisine. The Noto beef steak and cutlet were outstanding, and the chef's special simmered fish was also very delicious. However, the attitude and way of speaking of the staff were somewhat disappointing... It affected my husband's mood negatively. While we understand there was no ill intent, it was unfortunate.

A facility where you can leisurely enjoy the flow of time.

From the warm welcome upon arrival to the thoughtful send-off, everything at this Ryokan was impeccable. When I mentioned it happened to be my birthday, they kindly added a soup with "red and white mochi" to the dinner menu and even prepared additional special dishes. The meals were truly satisfying in terms of quality and taste. However, I felt that the portions were slightly too large. The overall atmosphere (quietness) was perfect. During our visit to "Kiln Studio Bitoen" on our way back, we had the pleasure of hearing many wonderful stories about their pottery contributions to Kochou-san. I would love to stay here again someday.

It is simply a wonderful Stays!

I stayed at Jurakudai for two nights. It was raining when I arrived on the first day, but as soon as I parked the car, someone came to help with my luggage. Thank you very much. The bath was an Onsen, and I was able to relax, and the meals were wonderfully delicious. I would love to visit again!

    Please consider staying with us.

The meticulous attention to detail unique to a long-established property is comforting. It is close and enjoyable to visit the Kiku-no-Yu public bath, and relaxing in the large bath within the ryokan is also a good option. You can spend your time leisurely. The cuisine features exquisite dishes that pique your interest. The current owner himself prepares the dishes with his knife skills, honed at a famous restaurant in Akasaka, and they are truly remarkable. Do not underestimate the ryokan cuisine. We highly recommend you stay with us at least once. It is a quiet and elegant property.

    The ultimate hospitality

We stayed in a room with a private open-air bath! I usually don't write reviews, but I'm writing this as a token of gratitude! We were provided with shuttle service to the nearest station, and during our stay, we felt comfortable all the time, and the bath was amazing! The food was incredible, including the soft-shelled turtle hot pot, the Noto beef steak that was added on the day, the wonderful kaiseki cuisine, the shrimp risotto, and the simmered sea bream. Everything was impressive, and the portions were so generous that our satisfaction level was 120%! Haha We will definitely repeat our stay!!!!!!!!!!

Exquisite cuisine and luxurious Room, a comfortable time

Both dinner and breakfast were prepared in a way that brought out the natural flavors of the ingredients. The dishes were lightly seasoned, allowing the broth to enhance the taste without overpowering it, which suited me perfectly and was wonderful. We enjoyed our meals at a table and chairs in the luxurious room called "Kajika," which overlooks the Kakusenkei Gorge. The onsen water was smooth and popular among the women. The negative aspect of the facility was that access to the bath was only via stairs, and there were no handrails in the bathtub, which was difficult for the elderly. The garden with old trees around the entrance had a deep charm, and my grandchild collected many acorns. The staff always provided kind service, allowing us to depart feeling pleasant and refreshed. I am grateful to have encountered such a good property.

This time, it's a trip just for the couple.

I chose this ryokan based on the overall high reviews. As the reviews said, the meals were very delicious and the hospitality was wonderful. The building is old but has charm, and the furnishings are stylish and create a good atmosphere. This time, I was especially pleased with the complimentary room upgrade. The staff's response was also excellent, and I'm really glad I chose this property. Thank you for accommodating my husband's requests. I would like to visit again.
