    Every day is an excuse

We were able to step away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy an irreplaceable time. The atmosphere, cuisine, service quality, and pricing—everything reflected truly refined hospitality. Thank you very much.

This was my long-admired Accommodation, and my first visit. I was truly able to relax in a space where all I could see from the Room was greenery, and all I could hear were the calls of cicadas. The two large public baths had slightly different temperatures between the indoor bath and the open-air bath, so even I, who am not fond of very hot water, could choose what suited me. The meals also featured seasonal ingredients beautifully and were absolutely delicious. I sincerely appreciate the staff’s thoughtful, unobtrusive hospitality. I would love to return in a different season.

Even though this was only my third stay, I feel relieved the moment I arrive. I truly appreciate how relaxing it is. This time, I had the large public bath all to myself both at night and in the morning, so I could soak at a leisurely pace. The meals I always look forward to were just as good as expected. Ingredients I like—ones I hadn’t even mentioned—appeared often, which made me very happy. The futon was set up in a bed style, and it was at about the same height as the TV, so it was a shame I couldn’t watch while lying down. Still, it’s an Accommodation I truly love.

    An Accommodation to Savor Tranquility

A wonderful Accommodation where you can enjoy fine cuisine and natural hot springs, away from the noisy, tourist-packed areas. The attentive yet unobtrusive service is also very pleasant. The property has a charming atmosphere and is carefully maintained, and you can tell that guests are truly valued. The only disappointment was the meals. My expectations were high to begin with, but they didn’t quite impress me. Overall, the seasoning felt a bit one-note (light and refreshing, which my mother liked), and the sirloin was quite rich (it would be nice to have a tenderloin option). Since the menu changes with each season, I look forward to trying it again next time.

    Truly wonderful.

Horai, which I used to visit every month, was bought by the Hoshino Group and became a terrible Accommodation (and is currently closed indefinitely). Asaba’s pricing has become outrageous, and Ochiairo has changed owners and the meals have become dreadful—so this is the only paradise left near Tokyo. Last time I felt the food had become a bit too strongly seasoned, but this time it was back to being delicious. I often come here to write, so having a work desk in the Room is very convenient. The Room, the bath, and all shared areas are clean—truly wonderful.

    A Well-Deserved Treat Day

You can enjoy excellent Japanese cuisine in your Room. The open-air bath also has a great view and is very relaxing. This time, we stayed in a Room close to the large public bath, which was very convenient. This Accommodation is perfect for unwinding as a reward for your hard work. Everything can be done from your Room, offering plenty of privacy. It seems there are various types of Rooms, so I would like to visit again.

Thank you for a wonderful stay.

This was my third stay at Ishiba, a place I truly love. Compared with previous visits, the detached Room “Souraku-an” has been renovated and has become an even more comfortable space. I love being able to soak in the Onsen at a leisurely pace and spend time quietly, and it is an Accommodation that makes me want to return regularly. Because there are only a limited number of Rooms, even when going to the large public bath, you almost never run into other guests. I was very surprised that this time, for the first time, I saw several overseas guests in the large public bath. In today’s world, it may be difficult to find an Accommodation with only Japanese guests. Thank you very much for accommodating my various requests. However, there were two disappointing points that I would like to mention briefly. The first is the meals. Compared with before, I felt the dinner seasoning was stronger (saltier/richer), and the portions also seemed larger. I had been looking forward to Ishiba’s simple yet beautiful dishes that let you enjoy the natural flavors of the ingredients, but I was disappointed by the strong dashi and other heavy seasonings. Also, whereas previously each dish—especially warm items—was served one by one while still hot by the attendant, this time multiple dishes were brought out together, and explanations were minimal as well. The second point is about service from the attendant. Although her wording may have been inexperienced, she served dishes while making noticeable noise, which made it hard to relax during the meal. She also often forgot to explain dishes; we had to ask ourselves on several occasions. Until now, Ishiba’s attendants have provided wonderfully attentive service with just the right sense of distance… but perhaps we were simply unlucky this time; it ended up being a very disappointing stay. In recent years prices have risen and renovations have been made as well, so I had been looking forward to improvements—but this turned out to be my most disappointing stay so far. I sincerely hope these points will be taken into consideration and improved upon going forward. Thank you very much in advance."""

    A gentle knock-knock-knock from the open-air bath.

Drawn by the warmth of spring, I visited Yugawara Sekiyou with my mother. While soaking in the open-air bath, I heard a steady tapping sound from somewhere. Looking up, I saw a Japanese pygmy woodpecker pecking at a persimmon tree. After watching for a while, I spotted a Japanese white-eye perched on a plum branch. Cherry blossoms were also beautifully in bloom from our Room. Dinner was served with attentive care by the room attendant: butterbur sprout tofu, Kuwana clam hot pot with noresore (conger eel larvae), quail, and bamboo shoots—truly the taste of spring. My mother, who will turn 88 in a few years, ate more than three bowls of rice at breakfast and even asked for another serving of rice cooked in an earthenware pot—she looked completely satisfied. Thank you very much.

    Regular Accommodation

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve stayed here, but it’s a wonderful Accommodation every time. The dinner is even better than meals in Tokyo that cost tens of thousands of yen, and the breakfast is outstanding. With the best futon bedding, a quiet Onsen, and attentive service from the staff, we head home each time saying there’s no need to go to any other Ryokan.

    I have stayed at ove...

I have stayed at over 30 hot spring Ryokan, but this is the first time I have had an experience like this, and I am truly confused. Originally, we made a Reservation for a Plan with in-room dining, and the first staff member also explained it that way. However, for some reason, a second staff member told us that “in-room dining means eating in a private room separate from your Room.” To my surprise, guests in the neighboring Room were served their meal in their own Room as usual. Whether it was because we are foreign guests or for some other reason, I cannot understand why only we were required to move. Private-room dining itself is not a problem, but calling this “in-room dining” feels misleading. In addition, although we had confirmed our meal times at check-in, another staff member later asked us to change both dinner and breakfast times. Because the atmosphere of the Accommodation, the guest Room, the food, and the service from some of the staff were excellent, it is honestly very disappointing to see such inconsistency in service at this price range. It also leaves me concerned about future operations.

The meals and service are always satisfying. I think this is the best Accommodation in Yugawara. This time, I accidentally spilled water from the humidifier in the Room, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

    Perfect Accommodation

This is an accommodation I have visited many times. Everything, including the meals, room, hot spring, and amenities, is perfect. This time, my mother was not feeling well and we caused some inconvenience to the staff, but they responded warmly for which I am deeply grateful. I will visit again.

    We had a wonderful time.

We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my husband's birthday. Since it was said to be a 20-minute walk from Manyo Park, we decided to take a leisurely stroll. However, the steep slope made us sweat and laugh as we finally arrived at the accommodation. The staff immediately lent us towels and prepared a cold welcome drink for my husband, showcasing their exceptional hospitality. The view and comfort of the room were, of course, excellent, as were the onsen and meals. What stood out most was how sparkling clean all the windows were; the garden visible at the end of a dim hallway looked like a painting. This ryokan is truly impeccable in every detail. The young male staff member who attended to us was highly dedicated yet approachable—a truly wonderful person. Thank you for all your thoughtful gestures. We hope to visit again someday during another season for a more relaxed stay. Thank you very much for everything!

Celebrate your eldest son's birthday, university graduation, and new job at Ishiha.

We added one more person to our long-planned stay at Ishiha to celebrate together. It was wonderful to enjoy a long bath and meal after a while, feeling our son's growth. Although our parenting journey is nearing its end, it's natural for little worries to linger. The grilled duck on magnolia leaves was delicious. Thank you for your thoughtful hospitality!

A Relaxing Accommodation with Many Repeat Guests

Exceptional service with thoughtful attention that makes you feel as if you are the only guest. A quiet and luxurious accommodation where you can relax and unwind. The meals are, of course, delicious and satisfying, giving a sense of enjoying authentic cuisine. However, perhaps due to rising costs, the ingredients felt slightly lacking. It was disappointing that there wasn’t a single meat dish included. Guests encountered at the Onsen often mentioned being repeat visitors who stay here seasonally. It seems that everyone knows how to enjoy their time here respectfully, creating a serene atmosphere where even in a wooden structure, no sounds from others disturb your peaceful stay.

    The Best Accommodation

I visited the accommodation I had always dreamed of for the first time. The meals were beyond my expectations, and my wife and I were deeply moved throughout our stay. The grilled dishes, in particular, offered not only exquisite taste but also delightful aromas. Warm dishes were served at the perfect temperature for enjoyment, making this accommodation ideal for savoring top-notch Japanese cuisine. The staff provided attentive service while respecting our privacy, addressing only what was necessary with precision, allowing us to spend a peaceful and relaxing time. We are truly grateful. We look forward to returning during a different season!

    Thank you for your patronage.

This was my third stay this year. An accommodation where you can clear your mind and body every time. The onsen, service, and meals in my favorite room are always wonderful, making it a place I truly love. One slight disappointment was the outdoor bath in the large public bath area having many mosquitoes, which made it difficult to relax fully. I understand it's inevitable as it's surrounded by nature, but since other guests also quickly moved to the indoor bath, I hope this could be addressed if possible. That said, it's also part of the charm of being close to nature... I will definitely visit again during a different season, so I look forward to staying with you then as well. Please take care!

    Timeless Japanese Hospitality Accommodation

After many years, we returned to Ishiba. Amid the prominence of foreign-owned accommodations, this ryokan truly highlights the charm of traditional Japanese hospitality. The aged accommodation is polished to perfection, with a subtle and pleasant scent of sandalwood. The fresh flower arrangements throughout the facility add a touch of elegance. From passing through the noren curtain, everything blends harmoniously without any ostentation, including the natural integration of wabi-sabi in every detail and even in the demeanor of the staff. The uniquely Japanese sense of mindfulness and care was deeply comforting. This spirit extended seamlessly to their cuisine as well, leaving a lasting impression far beyond that offered by foreign-style services—a heartfelt hospitality that resonated deeply within us. In these times especially, this is an accommodation worth cherishing. We look forward to visiting again in another season. Special thanks to the two attendants who took great care of us during our stay—it made for an unforgettable journey! Thank you very much!

Yugawara Luxury Ryokan with Fine Dining

The renovated interior of Sora-an is a wonderful blend of Japanese and Western styles, and the meals, including large matsutake mushrooms and hamo hot pot, were delicious. I would love to visit again in a different season. This time, I especially enjoyed the exquisite hassun dish. With the Onsen and meals, I had a highly satisfying experience. Thank you very much!

    Stayed at the long-awaited accommodation.

This is the accommodation I had always wanted to stay at. I was deeply moved when I passed through that noren curtain. The building itself is old, such as the entrance to the room. However, the air conditioning, lighting, blinds instead of curtains, large TV, hairdryer, toilet facilities, and amenities were well-equipped and comfortable. There was also a couch sofa and desk in the room, making it perfect for spending time there. Although I usually feel uncomfortable with male staff attending to rooms, this time a young but polite and gentle staff member made me feel at ease. The meals were delicious and you could tell each dish was carefully prepared. Especially the tamagoyaki served at breakfast—it had a slightly sweet yet firm texture that was so good it left me amazed (laughs). The public bath was small but clean and well-maintained. Although I had to try three times due to crowding before finally getting in on my third attempt, it was so enjoyable that it didn’t bother me anymore. It seems you can check congestion status at the front desk... I’m glad they now allow single reservations! My only regret is not being able to take a photo in front of that noren curtain on my way out because it wasn’t hung due to rain—such a shame!

A Touch of Luxury at the End of Summer

The unforgettable impression from my first visit last spring brought me back during a different season. Generally, expectations tend to rise on a second visit, often making it hard to surpass the initial experience. However, Ishiba exceeded those expectations in the best way possible. The cuisine and service were exceptional, and simply being there was incredibly soothing. The room I stayed in this time had just been renovated in July. With a new bath and an added terrace, I enjoyed multiple relaxing baths despite the lingering summer heat and spent serene moments on the terrace sipping drinks while listening to cicadas—truly a perfect holiday. Additionally, the staff member who attended to our meals demonstrated impeccable manners with just the right level of attentiveness, which was greatly appreciated. I look forward to visiting again during another season. While these times may be challenging for many reasons, I hope you continue evolving and providing such wonderful experiences.

    I have been visiting...

I have been visiting for the past few years. This time, I came for the first time to celebrate my husband's birthday. Since I had informed in advance that it was his birthday, I was expecting perhaps a small dessert to celebrate, but we were deeply touched by all the thoughtful gestures. There were various considerations in the room and meals, and at the end, we even received a heartwarming gift! My husband was very pleased as well. Thank you so much. The Onsen in the private bath was incredibly relaxing, and I felt so happy to enjoy thickly sliced hamo (pike conger) again since having it on Awaji Island. I also appreciated how you remembered what we needed last time and prepared it subtly this time too. The attentiveness of all your staff always moves me—thank you! The quiet atmosphere, beautifully maintained rooms with attention to every detail, and meals that amaze us every time make this accommodation truly one-of-a-kind for us as a couple. We will visit again during another season!

Striving for continuous improvement without settling for the status quo.

I have always loved luxury ryokans in Izu and Hakone and have stayed at many. This time, I was thrilled to secure a reservation at Ishiba, which I had been eyeing for some time. Upon arrival, seeing the large noren made me very happy. However, shortly after arriving, a few concerns began to arise. I arrived as scheduled at 3 PM and was guided to the waiting room. I assumed the accommodation check-in process would begin soon but ended up waiting there for quite some time without any explanation of the delay, which felt strange. After more than 10 minutes passed, they finally informed me that they would guide me to my room. Several other issues occurred during my stay. While dining in a separate room, the air conditioning suddenly stopped working and could not be restored. As a result, we had to open windows in nearly 30-degree weather and endure significant heat while eating our meal. When ordering wine by bottle, it is customary not to uncork it before bringing it out; however, they brought it already opened without asking if we wanted to taste it first before serving—something that is typically standard practice when ordering by bottle. Additionally, wine service usually starts with women first as etiquette dictates; however, I was served first instead. At the bathhouse area: one of the outdoor bath lights was out making visibility insufficient; signage indicating gender-switched baths after midnight wasn’t clear enough—my companion found men using what should’ve been designated female-only facilities next morning! Safety-wise: given how complex building layout seemed overall—a comprehensive map showing evacuation routes during emergencies appeared missing too (which should be mandatory). Despite these shortcomings—the architecture’s ambiance alongside traditional Japanese-style rooms stood unparalleled while meals matched high-end restaurant standards reflecting prior guest reviews accurately—we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless yet couldn’t help feeling management might rest overly complacent atop glowing reputations hence rated experience lower accordingly. (Note: Whether published here via IKYU.com or otherwise shared directly w/ryokan remains secondary priority since similar feedback intended reaching them regardless.)

Yugawara First-Class Ryokan with Fine Dining

It was my first visit in several years, and it seemed the staff remembered me. I have now decided that whenever I visit Yugawara, I will stay at Ishiba. I stayed in the Daikan room, but for both breakfast and dinner, I was able to use the adjacent Jukkoku room. Thanks to this arrangement, I could relax comfortably in my own room. Thank you very much. Dinner was an abalone kaiseki meal, and I felt it rivaled the taste of Kyoto's fine dining establishments or sushi restaurants in Ginza. I look forward to visiting again during a different season.
