    How about charcoal-grilled matsutake mushrooms?

    I splurged on this inn in Takayama for my husband’s birthday because it offered charcoal-grilled matsutake mushrooms, but the mushrooms never arrived until I asked about them. They were finally brought out with the charcoal just before dessert. The staff member, who was from overseas, brought them over without any explanation or apology, as if nothing had happened. Despite looking forward to them, we ended up eating less than half. Shouldn’t a manager have come to at least explain? Everything else was good, which made this especially disappointing. Sadly, it became a trip I’d rather forget!

    The food was delicious, and the hot springs and service were excellent.

    We stayed for two nights to celebrate turning 60 with friends from elementary school, with a different package for the first night. We were given a larger room, so all five of us had plenty of space. There were two hot spring bathing areas, and both were lovely. Every dish in the Hida beef kaiseki dinner was delicious, and the private dining room was spacious. Unfortunately, one of our group felt unwell and couldn’t eat. The breakfast buffet was also delicious and included local Hida specialties. It rained on our last day, so we stayed at the hotel until just before it was time to catch our train. We had hoped to have lunch at either the Western or Japanese restaurant, but unfortunately both were closed on Sundays. We had light bites and drinks in the lounge instead. It was a wonderful trip to celebrate our 60th birthdays.

    We stayed for two nights to celebrate turning 60 with friends from elementary school, booking a different package for the second night. The hotel kindly gave us a larger room, so all five of us had plenty of space. There were two hot spring bathing areas, and both were lovely. It rained from the second day onward, but the shuttle bus made sightseeing easy. The staff kindly took photos for us, and we could borrow umbrellas for our outings. We really appreciated the thoughtful service. The buffet was more filling than it looked, and we left completely satisfied. Everything in the Japanese-style breakfast was delicious, and I bought some ginger-simmered beef to take home. Thank you also for the chopsticks and complimentary drink with dinner as Diamond member benefits. It was a wonderful trip to celebrate our 60th birthdays.

    My first stay at Orinkaku with my aunt from Takayama.

    This was our second stay at the Green Hotel, and this time we chose a Comfort Twin room in the new Orinkaku wing. The secure elevator access gave us peace of mind. The matsutake mushroom dinner was a delight, and we were very satisfied with both the variety and portions at breakfast. We borrowed a wheelchair and were grateful for the staff’s kindness and assistance. We used both bathing facilities and enjoyed relaxing baths, with all the amenities we needed provided.

    The four of us sibli...

    The four of us siblings take a trip together once a year, and we always book through Ikyu. Until now, we had been very happy with the accommodations we chose. We thought Ikyu maintained a certain standard for its listings, but this stay was very disappointing for two reasons. First was the room. Our immediate reaction was, “Is this really our room?” Second was the food. The buffet was so disappointing that we discussed skipping it and eating elsewhere. Unfortunately, it was raining, and we did not want the hassle of finding a restaurant, so we stayed. From what we could see, about 80% of the guests were international tour groups, which seem to be this hotel’s main target market. It felt rather like staying at a hotel catering to school trips. Now that we know Ikyu also lists hotels like this, we will be much more careful when choosing accommodations in the future.

    The hot springs and breakfast were excellent, but dinner service during the festival could be improved.

    The hotel was spacious, and the hot spring baths were large and very clean. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Takayama Station, even with a suitcase. It’s on the opposite side of the station from the old town, so reaching the main sights involves a slightly longer walk than from some other hotels. The breakfast was delicious. However, when I stayed during the Takayama Autumn Festival, only dinner-inclusive plans were available to book. At check-in, all the early dinner slots were already full, and the only remaining slots overlapped with the festival’s evening float display and procession. To see the festival, I had to skip dinner despite having paid for it. I felt this arrangement showed a lack of consideration for guests. If dinner is mandatory, I would appreciate more flexibility, such as the option to have a boxed meal instead.

    A hearty breakfast is included.

    It seemed to be in the older wing, so it was spacious, but the age of the building was noticeable. Not having an outlet by the bed was quite inconvenient, as I couldn’t charge my phone as part of my daily routine. There were safes for five people, but it seemed like all the keys were the same; to use one safe, I had to remove and take out the other four keys as well, which made me feel a bit uneasy. Breakfast was served Japanese-style, and it felt like a traditional hot spring inn for the first time in a while—very nice.

    The dinner options were a bit disappointing.

    Last year we stayed at a ryokan with a small room and a private open-air bath, and this year we decided to try a different hotel. I was a bit worried it might feel like a group-tour style property, but the room was clean and very comfortable. My companion has difficulty walking, so we planned to have dinner at the on-site steakhouse, but due to my poor research I learned that reservations must be made at least four days in advance. Instead, we went to another restaurant called “Shirakago” to try Hida beef. It was Hida beef that you grill yourself over a mesh grill, but with the doneness and other factors I can’t honestly say it was delicious. On top of that, the service was questionable. We ordered an assorted tempura platter; the portion size was generous and satisfying, but there wasn’t much grated daikon. Since they brought two servings of tempura dipping sauce, I asked, “Could we have a little more grated daikon?” and was surprised to be told there would be an extra charge. Is it normal to charge extra for about one tablespoon of grated daikon? After that—perhaps because he seemed busy—the male staff member remained unsettled and rushed us through the meal. It’s disappointing, because the female front desk staff were very kind and even explained the dining options clearly.

    Stayed with my famil...

    Stayed with my family, including elementary school-aged children. The room was extremely comfortable—truly the best. We stayed during Silver Week, and even more than two weeks later, our family still often talks about how amazing this hotel was. The dining, baths, and lounge were all excellent, and we also appreciated the wide variety of workshops at the souvenir shop. Above all, the room was spacious with a very comfortable layout.

    About the Location of the Bathroom Facilities and the Open-Air Bath

    I find it hard to understand why the open-air bath and the bathroom are separated. This makes it rather inconvenient to wash first and then use the open-air bath. You also run out of bath towels, and having to walk across the bedroom makes it even worse.

    Takayama is the only place I choose.

    Thank you very much for your help. I’m sorry for the trouble caused by my forgotten item. I truly appreciate your courteous assistance when I contacted you, and I have safely received it. Even during the busy holiday period, the staff’s efficient service made my stay very comfortable. While more international staff are working in many places these days, I felt that everyone here is well supported and properly trained. The bath was wonderful above all! And the breakfast (Japanese set meal) was absolutely delicious! Thank you again.

    Check-in

    I paid a high rate during Silver Week and reserved a Junior Suite Room. I informed the Hotel in advance that I would check in at 3:00 PM, and arrived at the front desk around that time, but a non-Japanese-speaking front desk staff member told me, “The Room won’t be ready until 5:00 PM.” According to the Accommodation information on IKYU, check-in is from 2:00 PM. A disappointing Hotel and a disappointing Reservation site.

    First Visit to Takayama

    I’d heard of Takayama Green Hotel because it’s well known, but I hadn’t had a chance to visit Takayama until now, so this was my first stay in Takayama. I was surprised by how many international guests there were at the Hotel. The Room was spacious and efficiently designed. The luggage rack area where I could easily open my suitcase was very convenient, well placed, and much appreciated. The in-room amenities were more than sufficient. The bed was also very comfortable. The bath facilities were excellent. Next time, I’d like to come back even just to enjoy the Onsen again. We chose the buffet for meals, but with a Multiple Night Stay it might get repetitive, so next time I’d like to try kaiseki cuisine instead. The shop also had a great selection, and we made use of it as well. Another Accommodation I’d love to return to has been added to my list.

    Both the cuisine and the Room were wonderful, and we were completely satisfied with our stay as a couple.

    My spouse and I stayed in a Suite Room for two nights. The Room was very spacious and spotlessly clean throughout, so we were able to relax in complete comfort. We also really enjoyed the private open-air bath in the guest room at our leisure—it was the perfect way to unwind after traveling. The food was especially outstanding. Each dinner course was prepared with great care, and we were highly satisfied not only with the flavors but also with the presentation and service. Breakfast was equally plentiful, and we enjoyed every meal over both nights. All of the staff were courteous and attentive, which made our stay truly pleasant. My wife and I both agreed that choosing this Hotel was the right decision, and it became a wonderful memory of our trip to Hida Takayama. One small point: even for guests, outdoor parking costs 1,000 yen per day. Considering the Accommodation Fee, we would have appreciated complimentary parking or a guest discount. That said, overall it was an extremely satisfying stay. If we have another chance to visit Takayama, we would definitely like to stay again.

    Meals

    The on-site Japanese restaurant, Ryokutei, was excellent. I was especially impressed by the variety at breakfast. The Onsen was also great, and overall it deserves five stars.

    Both the Facility and services were excellent. The Japanese-style breakfast tasted great and was a good portion. Since there is a sauna, it would have been nice to have deck chairs for relaxing, even if a cold plunge bath is difficult to provide.

    Highly satisfied.

    We were completely satisfied with everything—the restaurant, the Room, and the large Onsen bath. Since we were traveling with my elderly parents, the staff kindly accommodated us by assigning a Room near the elevator. At the buffet restaurant as well, they immediately understood our request as soon as we sat down, and everything went smoothly. At the Japanese restaurant, there were many non-Japanese staff alongside experienced Japanese staff, and everyone was very polite, making our stay truly comfortable. The Room was spacious with an easy-to-live-in layout, which was great. The Onsen left our skin feeling wonderfully smooth.

    Hida Beef Tasting Comparison

    *What I liked… Dinner was delicious. The Hida beef tasting, Hida beef nigiri, and ayu were excellent. I was completely full. At the breakfast buffet, it was my first time at a Hotel that offered Yakult and almond milk. I wanted to try a little of as many items as possible, but there were so many options—and I was already full from dinner—so I couldn’t finish everything. The Onsen also made my skin feel smooth. In the end, I only used the large public bath on the 1st floor, but it seems the Onsen in the basement is very good, so my husband said it was a shame we didn’t go. There were also lots of souvenir options, and I was able to buy items I had missed at other shops. The service was fairly good too. *What I wasn’t fully satisfied with… Even though it’s quite far from both the station and downtown, we were still charged for parking. Free might be difficult, but I wished it had been at least half price. Our Room number was 842 (it includes “42”), which didn’t feel very lucky. And when we opened the shoji screens in the Room, a cemetery stood out prominently. When staying at other Hotels, amenities are usually placed near the front desk so guests can take what they need. Since I’m used to that style, it felt inconvenient (and disappointing) that this Hotel only had large bottles in the large public bath area. In Shirakawa-go the next day, perhaps because Obon had ended, there seemed to be fewer inbound tourists than expected, so we enjoyed it more. Next year as well, we’d like to visit Hida Onsen again and then tour sightseeing spots around Toyama the following day.

    This is an outstanding Hotel in every way.

    I stayed here once about 20 years ago and still remember the wonderful hospitality, so I decided to return. From the moment I arrived at the drop-off area, the Hotel staff welcomed me with warm smiles and quickly brought a cart. As soon as I stepped into the lobby, I felt a comforting, welcoming atmosphere. After a long journey that left me quite tired, I immediately thought, “Even though it’s far, I’m glad I came back here.” The building was impressive before, but now there are additional buildings and the lobby has been extensively renovated into an elegant and beautiful space. The Room was not only spotless; amenities and towels were perfectly prepared as well, making my stay very comfortable. This time, since my schedule outside was packed, I chose a Plan with no meals—just a compact Room for sleeping at night. Next time, I’d love to dine in the Hotel and choose a Plan with a more spacious Room so I can relax and fully enjoy my stay again!

    Conveniently located near the station, with wonderful staff.

    Thank you for taking such great care of us. From the front desk to the entrance, the buffet, and the souvenir shop, every staff member’s service was wonderful, making this a very pleasant Hotel. I was especially happy when a staff member passing by kindly asked if we would like them to take a photo. The buffet food was also delicious. The roast beef at dinner and the omelets in the morning—along with the live cooking right in front of us—felt truly luxurious. The Japanese, Western, and Chinese selections were always well monitored so nothing ran out, and there was clear attention to hygiene as well, which made dining very comfortable. We chose breakfast and dinner buffets for our two-night stay (3 days), but since the menu did not change much, we did get a little tired of it. That said, this is common at most Hotels, so next time on a Multiple Night Stay I would like to be mindful about using the Hotel’s restaurants as well. This Hotel also has the Hida Takayama Bussankan shop on-site, which is incredibly convenient because you can do all your shopping at once. The selection is extensive, shipping is fast, and the staff’s work is outstanding. The only disappointing point was regarding trash in our Room: all of the previous guest’s garbage had been left behind. It was during Obon so I’m sure it was an extremely busy time and preparations must have been difficult. I absolutely do not want anyone to be blamed or reprimanded; however, I respectfully ask that you take this seriously—because despite your excellent hospitality overall, there was this small oversight that I mention with care and goodwill. We were touched by the warmth of Hida Takayama and made wonderful memories here. Thank you very much.

    The guest-only Onsen...

    The guest-only Onsen was excellent. Although the Accommodation is close to the station, it was extremely hot during our stay, so the Shuttle Service was greatly appreciated. The samue provided as in-house wear was nice, but it did not feel comfortable as sleepwear, so I wish cotton sleepwear were available.

    Family Trip

    I was originally planning a trip to Shikoku, but the weather forecast predicted rain throughout our stay, so I quickly changed plans to Hida—a place no one but me had visited before. This Hotel came up in my search as a good option, so we stayed here. Since there were four adults, we chose the Deluxe Japanese-style Room. The moment I opened the door, I noticed a lovely floor chair and sat down right away. It was very comfortable. For bathing, my husband and son used the public bath, while my daughter and I used the in-room shower. The water temperature in the Room shower fluctuated between hot and lukewarm, which made it a bit difficult to use. Most guests seem to use the public bath, so perhaps it isn’t used very often. We had breakfast only. The buffet area was spacious with a wide variety of dishes, and we took small portions so we could try as many items as possible. Everything was delicious and very satisfying. In particular, the egg dishes prepared right in front of us by the chef were exceptional. Checkout is at 11:00 a.m., so we were able to relax even after breakfast. I would like to stay here again when I visit Hida next time.

    Thank you for hosting us for the first time. We stayed in a Deluxe Twin Room on the top floor. It was spacious and clean—nothing to complain about. The open-air bath was also great. Since we left early, we did not have meals. We were very satisfied to stay at such an affordable rate. We would love to stay again next time.

    A fine Hotel. I wanted to walk around the garden, but I couldn’t find the entrance.

    My mistake. My after-meal medicine was tidied away while still in its packet before I could take it. Leaving it out next to the tray so I wouldn’t forget backfired. It may have been thrown into the trash along with other plastic waste. Next time, I’ll use a pill case or something similar so it’s clearly identifiable.

    Perfect for making unforgettable memories.

    Staying somewhere new always makes me a bit nervous, but this Hotel made me want to stay one more night... First of all, the buffet-style meals were outstanding. The Hida beef—like you’d get at a restaurant—was delicious. It was perfect for making family travel memories, and everyone in our family (Americans) was satisfied. It’s also in a location where you can walk and explore from central Takayama. Perhaps thanks to the Hotel’s consideration, we didn’t have to mix with large tour groups, so we could comfortably enjoy the Onsen and other facilities.

    Enjoy Takayama

    My spouse and I stayed in the new wing of Green Hotel, Ourinkaku. The refrigerator door under the TV was sticking out and wouldn’t close properly, which really bothered me. There was also a slight odor throughout the building. I felt that adding a pleasant aroma (such as aromatherapy) would create a more upscale atmosphere, so that was disappointing. I took out a glass to have a cold drink, but it was small and hard to drink from. The hot water in the bath was very good. The staff member who assisted us at breakfast was attentive, and we were satisfied. Thanks to them, we had a pleasant start to the morning, and we are grateful. Overall, I expected a bit more in terms of amenities and everything else, but these are my impressions within expectations.
