    The spacious grounds...

    The spacious grounds allowed for a relaxing stay. With a 12:00 PM checkout, I was able to enjoy the Onsen multiple times in the morning and had a very leisurely experience. The meals were gentle on the body and absolutely delicious. The service was exceptional, with our room attendant providing heartfelt hospitality. I had a very pleasant stay. There are three Onsen locations across the large property, making it enjoyable like a hot spring tour. I would love to visit again!

    The Onsen was absolutely amazing.

    We enjoyed relaxing and trying various Onsen. The Room with a bed was comfortable, and the meals, both breakfast and dinner, were delicious. The staff were also very kind. We would love to come back again! Thank you for your hospitality.

    This is my third time staying at Gekkoen.

    I have stayed at Yugetsusanso in Gekkoen twice over the past six years, but this time I chose to stay at Kouroukan for the first time. I loved both accommodations, but I think Yugetsusanso is ideal for those who prefer Japanese-style rooms, while Kouroukan is perfect for those who prefer Western-style rooms. The Room I chose this time was a semi-suite equipped with a massage chair, allowing me to relax while enjoying the view of nature. My wife was pregnant during our stay, and they kindly adjusted the meals by replacing items like aperitifs and sashimi. The food was delicious with a wide variety of options, leaving us very satisfied. I would definitely love to visit again!

    Used for my father's 77th birthday celebration.

    We used this Ryokan to celebrate my father's 77th birthday. We reserved one room for seven people, and it had two toilets and sinks, making our stay very comfortable. Although it is a traditional Ryokan, the water facilities were modern, and everything was clean and well-maintained. Additionally, the service by the staff during dinner and breakfast was excellent. The meals were also satisfying, with five slices of premium Japanese black beef and generous portions overall. My father was delighted, and I’m glad we chose this Ryokan.

    Ideal for family trips

    I stayed with the No Meals Included Plan on a weekday. I was surprised to find that my room had been upgraded. This stay was to celebrate the birthdays of myself, my husband, and my son, so it made us truly happy. The staff attending to our room were very polite. Although I originally wanted a meal plan to relax and enjoy Onsen, I had given up because my family members had different check-in times. However, they kindly arranged for us to enjoy breakfast at the buffet of Yuyu Gessanso in the same facility, allowing us to have a leisurely morning together as a family. With check-in and check-out both at 12:00 PM, we could use the Onsen without feeling rushed even after meals. There are three bathing areas in total, all of which were excellent. The outdoor bath was especially amazing and left our entire family extremely satisfied. Having visited Arima Onsen several times due to its proximity, this accommodation has been by far the most satisfying experience. We look forward to staying again!

    The view is spectacular.

    The view was absolutely stunning and truly refreshing. The room, renovated just a year ago, was clean, spacious, and comfortable. However, I felt that the cleaning in some detailed areas could have been better, which was a bit disappointing. The minibar was empty; having bottled water or similar items would have been appreciated. Although the description mentioned a private open-air bath in the room, it might be more accurate to call it semi-open-air or simply an indoor bath. Since it was summer, this setup worked well for us. The large windows offered great views and the surprisingly spacious bath exceeded our expectations. The public bath was clean and not crowded due to the season, allowing us to relax comfortably; however, during daytime hours there were moments when the sunlight felt too strong. Meals were luxurious but not overly abundant—just the right amount—and deliciously satisfying. Overall, while we had a comfortable stay and enjoyed many aspects of this accommodation, there were minor details that left some room for improvement. Nonetheless, it is an accommodation we would like to visit again someday! Thank you very much!

    Very satisfied.

    Since we had a 1-year-old child, we used the Onsen in the room and opted for in-room dining. The Room, especially the bedroom, lacked a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, it was inconvenient that I couldn't have coffee whenever I wanted without ordering room service. The staff handling our in-room dining was young but responded well to unexpected requests. The Onsen was excellent as expected. Although it was only available in the room, we thoroughly enjoyed it. The meals, including sashimi and fried dishes, were delicious even though we requested them to be served quickly due to having a child with us.

    It was great.

    I mainly used the indoor open-air Onsen, and I was very satisfied with the quality of the water. The traditional Onsen style, where the room attendant prepares meals and bedding, was delightful. The person in charge of our room seemed to be a trainee (a Japanese trainee, not from overseas), but their dedication and proper training left a positive impression. I forgot something in the Room, but they kindly sent it to me later by mail, for which I am very grateful.

    The Onsen and scenery are great, but the facility is disappointing.

    There are three Onsen facilities, and it was enjoyable to visit each one. The scenery on the way to the Onsen was also beautiful. At night, I was moved by the sight of fireflies from the bridge. However, walking in nylon sandals while wearing tabi socks was very slippery and difficult. Elderly guests should be cautious. The dinner at night was delicious, with tender meat. However, there was no explanation about the appetizers from the staff, so I referred to the menu while eating. It made me a bit sad as they explained it to a family sitting next to us. Regarding the room, unfortunately, there were issues with cleanliness in the toilet despite having a "cleaned" seal on it; there were stains on the seat and occasionally an unpleasant sewage smell filled the toilet area depending on time of day. We had to bring an air purifier into that space because one of my friends felt unwell due to this issue. From our room window, we could see a scenic river view; however, we could also see part of a men’s bath along that riverbank which surprised us as this is something we’ve never experienced before! Breakfast included delicious yudofu (hot tofu), but my friend found hair stuck under their fruit plate which required immediate replacement upon notifying staff members promptly addressing concerns raised here too!     The Worst Onsen Experience of My Life

    Due to staying on a Saturday, other Hotels with private open-air baths were fully booked, so I compromised and stayed here for 125,000 yen. The meals were served in the Room, but the food did not suit my taste. While drinking champagne, I asked the staff for water. When I tried to drink the water they brought, it had an unpleasant smell and was undrinkable. When I asked what kind of water it was, they said it was tap water but filtered through a purifier. When I requested mineral water instead, they asked how many bottles I needed and brought one bottle while mentioning there would be a charge—but this time it would be complimentary as a service. This surprised me—charging for basic drinking water at such an expensive Room! For 125,000 yen per night Room like this one, some drinks should already be provided in the fridge as standard practice. In other Hotels with private open-air baths that I've visited before, fridges are stocked with various beverages like bottled water, tea, beer, cocktails—even sake—and guests are often told to take leftovers home if desired. For example: at Kamenoi Bessou in Oita recently; their fridge offered free drinks aplenty—more than you could consume or carry back! Their Hotel excelled in every aspect: accommodations were superb; cuisine outstanding; hospitality exceptional—they even tailored breakfast options based on preferences shared during dinner conversations. At least provide bottled water inside refrigerators here—it’s basic hospitality! Unfortunately though...this Hotel lacked any sense of omotenashi (Japanese-style hospitality). It was truly disappointing—the worst experience ever encountered at such establishments. I’m embarrassed as someone from Hyogo Prefecture that such poor service exists locally—I will never return again! Lastly regarding "open-air bath" terminology—is management aware? What you offer isn’t truly “open-air”; rather just enclosed indoor bathing spaces falsely marketed otherwise via misleading photos online…exactly matching suspicions beforehand upon booking inspection earlier itself too sadly confirmed post-stay reality thereafter ultimately regretting spending hefty sum unnecessarily altogether overall entirely disappointing experience indeed!!

    A Showa-era luxury Onsen Ryokan

    A classic Showa-era luxury Onsen Ryokan. Three hotel buildings are connected across a mountain stream, allowing guests to enjoy each of the large public baths and open-air baths. The golden hot spring water, rich in iron and unique to Arima Onsen, is exceptional. The facility's water-related areas are modern and clean, though some parts feel slightly dated. The massage chair in the room is a nice touch. Meals are served as a traditional Japanese course at tables with sunken kotatsu seating. The misuji beef was delicious. Service was good overall for an established Ryokan, but it was disappointing that many staff members did not greet guests when passing in the hallways.

    First Time at Arima Onsen

    This was my first visit to Arima Onsen. The hospitality was excellent, and the food was incredibly delicious. There were three types of baths, and I was very satisfied. It was a Ryokan I would love to visit again.

    It was disappointing.

    We were looking forward to staying here for our anniversary based on the good reviews, but there were too many disappointments, and we do not wish to stay again. We have stayed at various accommodations in Arima Onsen multiple times before and have always been satisfied with other ryokans, but this was the first time we had such a disappointing experience. 1. Bathing etiquette was not communicated to foreign guests. 2. There was no explanation on how to unlock the room key (I panicked, thinking I might have mistaken my room or made an error). 3. The dining staff were very few (1-2 people), and even after calling out several times, they did not respond immediately. Moreover, one staff member greeted us for dinner while coughing without wearing a mask and held glasses by their rim when serving them. 4. The explanation of the meal contents was insufficient (a proper description would enhance appreciation of the ingredients and flavors). 5. There were no labels on slippers; I ended up wearing someone else's slippers when leaving the dining area after dinner. 6. Due to structural issues or otherwise, there was insufficient guidance within the facility (there is no elevator in the 3rd-floor lobby; it took asking two employees before finally finding our way back to our room). ○ We visit onsens for both meals and hot springs enjoyment. As frequent visitors who love Arima Onsen due to its proximity, we value relaxed conversations with attentive staff during mealtime as part of excellent hospitality (we avoid large-scale accommodations as we prefer a slower pace with age). This experience left us most disappointed. ○ We hope this accommodation can return to being worthy of its positive reviews through constructive feedback shared herewith!

    Cherry Blossom View Bath

    The second night's Kobe beef shabu-shabu was exceptionally delicious. The kaiseki meal, however, did not meet expectations. It was my first time visiting Arima Onsen, inspired by a travel program I happened to watch on BS. The unexpected cherry blossom viewing was a delightful surprise, especially with the trees in full bloom. Moreover, being able to enjoy the view of fully bloomed cherry blossoms from both the large bath and open-air bath brought immense satisfaction!

    Poor service for a high-end Ryokan.

    We recently stayed at Kouroukan with a 120,000 yen accommodation plan for a couple. Although we have stayed at several luxury ryokans before, this was the first time we experienced such poor service. While it’s understandable that there was no welcome drink upon arrival, there wasn’t even tea service when we were shown to our room. It seemed like they expected us to make tea ourselves. However, when I went to the sink area, there were only tea leaves—no teabags, coffee, or black tea available. As someone who loves coffee, I was disappointed. When I opened the refrigerator, it was empty. When I called and asked if mineral water was available, they told me it could be purchased at the shop if needed. The same applied to coffee; if you wanted some, you had to buy it from the shop yourself. Even for reading the morning newspaper—you had to go down to the lobby for that! Is this a business hotel? For 60,000 yen per person per night—this price seems excessively high given such service standards! There were other issues as well but I'll omit them here. When we voiced these complaints initially they gave various excuses but eventually admitted their faults and promised improvements with sincerity before we left Kouroukan trusting their word. If anyone else stays here in future under similar conditions (e.g., couples' accommodation plans costing around 120k), please share updates via reviews whether things improved compared against typical luxury ryokan standards since then—it would help others decide better! At this price point combined w/ current level-of-service provided repeat customers unlikely return unless changes occur soon; staff acknowledged feedback saying understood so let’s hope positive adjustments happen moving forward!

    It became a wonderful keepsake.

    We stayed here with three generations of our family to celebrate my mother’s retirement. The staff were very considerate about our meals, and everything was delicious—we were truly impressed. The bath was also very clean and relaxing. The hospitality was excellent. We would love to stay again.

    Onsen Indulgence

    Within an hour of checking into the hotel, enjoy a soak in the golden Onsen. Afterward, explore the various Onsens available in the facility. I visit Onsens monthly, but this hotel provided a truly relaxing day for both mind and body.

    We enjoyed relaxing in the Kinsen and Ginsen hot springs.

    With the charm of an onsen Stays, there were two types of onsen, Kinsen and Ginsen, which were relaxing. The atmosphere inside the Property was leisurely, and the view along the river and the mountains in front provided a scenery that made one forget the world.

    Price and Satisfaction

    The attendant who took care of us was exceptionally good. Her attentiveness was wonderful. However, I thought the workload might be too much for one person to handle, such as making and removing futons and serving meals. Nevertheless, the attendant managed everything with a smile and even drew pictures for the children. I thought she was a valuable asset. Other than that, I felt it didn't quite match the cost performance. The Facility was old but kept clean; however, even with the room's air conditioning set to a powerful 30 degrees, it was ineffective, and it was too cold at night, causing me to catch a cold despite coming to the Onsen. The room's humidifying air purifier had no water, and when I filled it myself, I noticed dust accumulated on the edges, making me wonder if it had been cleaned. The dinner was good, but breakfast needs more consideration. It was insufficient. The Shuttle Service driver had an arrogant attitude and ignored us even when we politely asked for something (perhaps unintentionally). I thought he was not suited for the service industry. Overall, I would be satisfied if the payment were about half, but I think the problem is that staying at Arima Onsen is generally expensive, possibly due to inbound tourism.

    Moonlight Garden of Autumn Leaves

    I stayed at Gekkoen during the autumn foliage season. The autumn leaves across the river were very beautiful and vibrant. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were delicious. I would like to visit again if I have the opportunity.

    I was able to refresh.

    First, I was overwhelmed by the exterior of the Hotel. And the interior was also wonderful! I was satisfied with the Room and the food. More than that, the hospitality from the welcome to the farewell was pleasant. The person who attended to us during both dinner and breakfast was very pleasant, allowing us to relax and enjoy our meals. Thank you! I believe it was during the cleanup after breakfast, but my clothes, which I had taken off and left, were neatly folded without me noticing. I was touched by the thoughtfulness amidst the busyness. I apologize for not being able to express my gratitude. Thank you very much. Sorry for giving you more work, haha. The food was, of course, beautiful and delicious. There were plenty of baths to enjoy. The shop was well-stocked, so I could shop without having to go out, at least for me... Thanks to that, I was able to fully enjoy the Onsen. But the best part was being healed by the people at Kourokan(Kourokan). Thank you very much. I was able to spend a wonderful two days.

    It was good.

    The service was good, and although it was No Meals Included, I ordered Kobe beef ramen, which was quite delicious, and I almost finished the entire soup. It's a bit disappointing that the morning bath is only available until 8 AM; it would have been better if it was open a little later.

    It became a good memory.

    In conclusion, I am very satisfied. I think I will stay here again the next time I visit Arima. Good Points - They provided shuttle service not only from the station to the ryokan but also from the ryokan to the ropeway station. - The quality of the onsen was just like a classic onsen, and I enjoyed it twice, in the morning and evening. - One free glass of draft beer - The view from the room (the autumn leaves were beautiful) The ryokan's shop mainly sells souvenirs, so I recommend buying snacks and alcohol at a convenience store in advance.

    I would like to visit again.

    We chose a large Room (12 tatami mats & 8 tatami mats) for our family of five, and having two washrooms and toilets was very helpful. The vending machine corner was far, and there was no alcohol vending machine, which was somewhat disappointing. The Facility and furnishings were aged, but it gave a sense of history. The service was satisfactory. The complimentary draft beer after a bath was a delight for a drinker like me. Of course, the whole family enjoyed it.
