Attentive service
This Ryokan is proactive, and handles each request with care. On the other hand, it felt a bit impersonal, which was disappointing. The Facility is old, but it is well maintained.

It was very calm wit...
It was very calm with a wonderful atmosphere, and I had a very comfortable stay! I accidentally left something behind, and I truly appreciate your kind help. I would love to stay again.

An accommodation you’ll want to stay in for the long term.
This is a Hotel with a calm atmosphere. It’s an Accommodation that makes you want to relax and stay for an extended period. It would be ideal to use this Accommodation as your base and take it easy for 2–3 days.

The property is a bit dated, but you can request towels and water, which was reassuring. It was inconvenient that there were no power outlets by the bed.

A bit disappointing.
The historic atmosphere was wonderful. However, there were many foreign staff members, and while their hard work was clear, as Japanese guests we felt the hospitality was somewhat lacking. We hope the Ryokan association will increase the number of younger Japanese staff.

Lake Shikotsu for the First Time in 5 Years
We were able to relax very comfortably. The Onsen was a silky, skin-beautifying hot spring. The Showa-era retro atmosphere paired well with the Ainu carvings, creating a calming space.

Hmm.
While there are many good points, it is priced accordingly.\nOn the downside, the living room projector quickly stops working due to heat, so you can’t stay in the living room.\nThe bedroom air-conditioning cover is coming loose.\nThe indoor bath door is warped and won’t close.\nThe staff are either foreign or elderly, so it’s difficult to communicate detailed requests.

The public areas are elegant and comfortable, and the staff are professional and courteous.
Last time I came to Lake Shikotsu, I stayed at the hidden hot-spring inn by the lake, Lake Shikotsu Marukoma Onsen Ryokan in Oku-Sapporo, and was absolutely amazed 13 years ago. This time I was afraid of ruining those good memories—and since I like trying new places (that’s probably the real reason), I decided to stay at another property that might be considered a Hokkaido chain brand, just to see what it’s like. When searching for Accommodation in Hokkaido, a few Ryokan names kept popping up again and again: Boutei Ryu, Suizantei, Boro NOGUCHI, Tsuruga, Manseikaku… it was dizzying. Since this place combines both “Boutei Ryu” and “Suizantei” in its name—Lake Shikotsu Daiichi Hotel Suizantei—I figured it must have something special (or maybe I just booked on a whim). By fate (or so it seems), this trip’s lodging plan followed a “from luxury to budget” rhythm—aka “eating sugarcane”—with nightly room rates dropping off a cliff. To prove my determination to be sensible with money—and because I’d eaten too well and too much over the previous days—I decided to earn some virtue points and go room-only for my Lake Shikotsu night! (Bang!) When booking there were two perks to choose from: a beer after bathing or late checkout. Of course I chose late checkout. I thought my travel companion would be thrilled—turns out he was still in shock: “What? We can check out at noon but there’s no breakfast???” Hmph—perfect chance to finish all the snacks we’d randomly bought along the way! Lighten the luggage too; honestly. But maybe even though they offer a room-only plan, since there’s truly nothing around here they’re afraid guests will starve while trying to save money or something—the lakeside lobby had unlimited drinks and small bites available all day long. Fasting was basically impossible (as if that had ever been my plan!). At check-in, the gentleman at reception kindly reminded us that early next morning the lobby would have freshly baked bread and cold-brew coffee: “Be quick—it’s limited!” So thoughtful; he seemed genuinely worried we might go hungry. The Onsen naturally can’t compare with Marukoma’s rare natural open-air bath that feels as if you’re breathing together with Lake Shikotsu itself. The highlight of Lake Shikotsu Daiichi Hotel Suizantei is its use of ancient hinoki cypress—grown above 2,500 meters elevation, over 2,000 years old, and more than 2 meters in diameter. The moment you enter the bath area you’re greeted by a rich hinoki fragrance; your sense of smell is soothed as if by forest bathing therapy. The elegance of the shared spaces here far surpasses what you get inside the rooms—the second-floor lounge has an absurdly extensive selection of tea bags! The staff are seasoned Japanese older gentlemen who seem unshakable no matter what happens; it gives you a real sense of security. The Lake Bar has such great atmosphere—the bartender spoke gracefully in a deep voice; I loved that classic old-school British vibe! One more pointless observation: In Hokkaido—or maybe all across Japan?—more Onsen lodgings seem to be providing samue these days. It suits big-handed foreigners like me perfectly. In low season there were so few guests—it was quiet and peaceful—and every soak felt like having the baths all to myself! With late checkout and no breakfast included, we slept until we woke naturally, then spent an unhurried morning on the second-floor reading room drinking tea properly while flipping through magazines and reading novels.

Multiple Night Stays should be avoided.
I was shocked and disappointed by how careless and poor the dinner on Day 1 and the breakfast on Day 3 were. The only good points about the first night’s dinner were that a male staff member in his 40s seemed earnest and kind, and the dining venue had a nice atmosphere. However, there was no guidance at the entrance about whether to take off our shoes or not, no one greeted us, and only after we asked were we told to remove them there. On top of that, we weren’t told whether to leave our shoes there or take them with us, so we just stood there confused along with other guests. Are they all part-timers? The man who brought us to our Room did hurry to bring drinks and responded to various requests, but the food was shocking—tiny portions like a child’s play meal, served cold, and some items weren’t even properly cut. Still, breakfast the next day was very delicious and nicely presented. The venue was also different; it felt like it wasn’t even in the same Hotel compared with dinner. Dinner on Day 2 was completely different from the previous day—very tasty, with proper portions. For the final breakfast on Day 3, I expected something different from the day before. It was different indeed, but about 90% of the side dishes tasted like cheap mass-produced items (rolled omelet), pickles/beans/simmered dishes that seemed carelessly taken out of bags and simply plated. Worse still, unlike the previous day, what should have been a main dish—the fish—was dried fish that seemed very old: freezer-burned and half dried out. The smell was awful. I considered calling staff to complain about how unacceptable it was, but then thought: is this all you get for JPY 150,000 for two people for two nights? I ended up feeling truly disappointed in my own judgment for choosing this place. Above all else, even the bath in our Room was covered in mold; parts of the floor felt rotten and spongy underfoot. It also felt slimy as if it hadn’t been cleaned at all. When I asked them to check because the light at the sink had gone out, they said “the bulb is burned out” and left—and then nothing happened while we waited around an hour like fools. Then when we said we were going out to use another bath area instead, they told us “it’ll be done soon so please wait,” but it still wasn’t done soon and we were kept waiting again. I will never go again.

This is an Accommodation where you can relax and enjoy a quiet stay.
This Accommodation is a great place to relax and unwind. However, from night to morning, I noticed litter in the hallways and on the stairs, which concerned me. The floor mat between the large public bath and the changing area seemed not to be replaced depending on the time of day and was soaking wet, which was disappointing given how good everything else was. The breakfast venue was cold, so please be aware if you are visiting during this season.

A Disappointing Birthday
I stayed in a Room with an open-air bath to celebrate my birthday. The bottom of the open-air bath was black and slimy, the hinoki indoor bath had drained and was empty, and the open-air bath in the large public bath was also slimy—I almost slipped and fell, and when I grabbed the handrail it wobbled. The changing room had a leak from the rain, so all I could do was laugh on my birthday. The Room also smelled musty.

Not great, and we had trouble at checkout.
I arrived late at night. The male staff member who assisted me at that time was very kind and helpful. The complimentary one drink service at the bar was also nice. The Room carpet was not very clean, so I used the disposable slippers I brought with me. There were no slippers in the Room. The in-room Onsen was great. The projector only worked for TV, so if you want to watch Netflix, you need to use the TV in the bedroom. Also, the projector’s cooling fan was loud, and the heat made the projector room uncomfortably hot. This time I had breakfast only. It was a typical Ryokan breakfast and tasted good, but the explanation of the dishes felt very mechanical and unfriendly. Most of the staff present did not greet us or say things like “good morning” or “thank you.” Even though I paid in advance two days before my stay, it had not been confirmed. I was kept waiting, told it had not been reflected yet, then made to wait again until they finally confirmed payment. It took about 15 minutes just to check out. The male staff member handling checkout was also the person who explained breakfast dishes; his attitude was not pleasant, and I left feeling unhappy. Even when I brought my car around to the entrance, no available staff offered to help. I am in the middle of a six-week trip and had already stayed at more than 35 Ryokan and Hotels by this point, so it is hard not to compare. Unfortunately, among all Accommodations on this trip so far, this one ranks last for me. This was actually my second stay here; after my first visit I did not feel it was very good and did not return for a while. This second time happened only because it was conveniently located—I made a Reservation planning just to have breakfast and sleep—but I do not think there will be a third time.

Very satisfied.
The interior was very clean, and the modern decor was wonderful. The Room was spacious, with a large bed and bath—nothing to complain about. Above all, the food was especially delicious. We chose the “80% full” course, but it was more than enough and very satisfying. Seasonal ingredients were used beautifully, and everything—from the rice cooked in a traditional pot to the grilled and simmered dishes—was gently seasoned. We could also feel the attention to detail throughout, including in the tableware. We were extremely satisfied and would love to visit again.

Manners of foreign guests...
I stayed for one night during Christmas. The hotel's facilities were very clean, and I found the staff to be kind and attentive. However, one thing that caught my attention was the ice cream placed in the dressing room of the large public bath. A foreign guest happened to eat ice cream while soaking in the open-air bath and left plastic wrappers and other trash floating in the water. While this is not a fault of the hotel, I noticed there were many foreign guests staying. Providing multilingual notices to prevent such behavior might make it more comfortable for everyone to use the facility with peace of mind.

I had a relaxing time.
The cleaning of the Room was poor. There was an ammonia smell coming from the air purifier, moss covered the edges of the open-air bath in the Room, and there were severe stains on the lower part of the shoji doors. The space between the glass door and shoji door was so dusty that it seemed unclear when it had last been cleaned. It was very disappointing, especially since other services and Facilities were excellent. The staff's response was good, and I was satisfied with meals, amenities, and replenishment of Room wear, which made me feel comfortable.

Very good
A suite with 105 square meters and an open-air bath, offering a very spacious and comfortable accommodation. It was not unnecessarily large but highly functional. The water temperature of the bath was high, but after addressing it, we were offered a complimentary first drink during dinner as an apology, which we greatly appreciated. The 8-course kaiseki meal was modest in quantity but more than sufficient in content. Although we added extra dishes beforehand, they turned out to be unnecessary. The three kinds of shellfish platter had excellent cost performance in terms of both quality and quantity; even typical seafood izakayas would struggle to match this value. One minor issue occurred during dinner when our conversation slightly progressed, leading to a complaint from the neighboring semi-private room. However, instead of simply passing on the complaint to us, I wish the accommodation could have assessed whether it truly warranted such feedback as part of their judgment process. Accommodations are spaces where various travel styles converge; it's not just about whispering quietly all the time... A reasonable decision based on common sense would have been appreciated. Although I considered filing a counter-complaint against our neighbors for their reaction to our conversation volume, I refrained from doing so. We also enjoyed lunch included with our stay and were extremely satisfied with it as well. Overall, this is an exceptionally wonderful accommodation that I would love to visit again if given the opportunity!

Highly satisfied, will stay again.
The accommodation has a slightly old-fashioned feel but is very clean and offers exceptional hospitality. In the first-floor lounge, you can enjoy welcome snacks, drinks and light desserts after meals, as well as freshly baked bread and coffee in the morning—there's hardly a moment to feel hungry. Additional bottled water or towels can conveniently be requested at the front desk or via phone. The room was spacious and allowed for a relaxing stay. It was also notable that amenities included skincare products for men, which is quite rare. While there was no view of Lake Shikotsu from the room, it’s only about a 10-minute walk away—a perfect distance for a pleasant stroll. We chose a smaller course meal option, but it still offered more than enough food. Meals are served in private rooms with partitions, allowing you to dine without worrying about others—a great point of consideration. This accommodation provided such a comfortable and fulfilling experience that it has become one of the places I’d love to stay at again!

Heavy Rain Warning!! Yet, the private open-air bath in the room was amazing! (LOL)
I have stayed at this accommodation several times, and it’s a place I always want to revisit. Despite the heavy rain in the evening, I enjoyed the private open-air bath in my room, which was incredibly refreshing. It felt like both my body and mind were cleansed! The staff's kindness was evident in their service, the room was clean and well-prepared, and both breakfast and dinner were absolutely delicious. I felt truly rejuvenated—thank you so much!

I have visited Hokka...
I have visited Hokkaido several times, but this was my first visit to Lake Shikotsu. It took about an hour to get there from New Chitose Airport. What surprised me the most during this trip was that almost all the staff at the Hotel were from overseas. They were trying their best to provide good service, but communication was challenging. Additionally, even when I wanted to ask one of the few Japanese staff members, it was difficult due to a shortage of personnel.

I would love to visit again.
Check-in, the bar staff, and the facility were excellent. However, the rice at breakfast had a bran smell, which was disappointing. As we arrived late and did not have dinner, I cannot fully evaluate the meals; please consider this as feedback solely on breakfast. Overall, it was an outstanding accommodation.

I felt relaxed.
The meals were excellent, and the lounge services, including fresh chocolate, coffee, and alcohol, were outstanding! The front desk staff was very helpful in providing information about restaurants in Sapporo where we could enjoy fresh sea urchin. I was extremely satisfied and would love to visit again. However, one issue was that the changing room felt like a sauna—perhaps the air conditioning wasn’t working or wasn’t installed. If it weren’t for the post-bath ice cream, I might have been quite upset! That’s a minus one point for me, but everything else was perfect.

The open-air bath in the room was excellent.
I stayed at this accommodation 9 years ago, and it holds fond memories as they took a commemorative photo for us during our stay. This time, I chose this place to revisit those memories, but there were some disappointing aspects. At around 3:30 PM, I went to the large public bath intending to use the open-air bath. However, when I opened the door, the bath was empty and unusable. While soaking in the indoor bath instead, someone entered the open-air bath area with tools like hoses and started working on it. There was no explanation about this issue during check-in, which made me feel that communication within the facility was lacking. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed using the private open-air bath in my room and found the meals exceptionally delicious. During dinner, we had a memorable conversation with one of the staff members from Peru who served us. When we ordered draft beer and hot sake (atsukan), they jokingly asked if we wanted them to warm up the beer too! My wife and I burst into laughter at that moment. Such moments truly become cherished memories of our travels!

Everything was perfect.
This was my second stay since last year. Just like the previous visit, this is a very pleasant accommodation. The serene atmosphere, meticulous cleaning, and cleanliness are impressive. The room is spacious and luxuriously designed, always leaving me in awe. This time, I stayed in a 105-square-meter room, which honestly felt almost too large! The bedroom, living room, and bathroom were completely separate—utterly luxurious. The open-air bath in the bathroom was incredibly relaxing; I used it nearly 10 times during my stay. Both dinner and breakfast featured ingredients that gave a sense of Hokkaido's charm with refined flavors—perfect in both quantity and quality. The lounge service was exceptional as well: complimentary sparkling wine or sake upon arrival, coffee service throughout the day along with small dishes made from okara (soy pulp), cold brew coffee in the morning paired with freshly baked bread—all delicious and free of charge. To be honest, there are no negative points to mention at all; however, if I must point out something minor—it would be that many staff members are non-Japanese nationals whose Japanese language proficiency could improve slightly more. That said though—their hospitality exceeded even that of Japanese staff! At approximately 40,000 yen per person for such an outstanding level of satisfaction—it’s rare to find accommodations like this! I will definitely return again soon. Thank you very much!

A very comfortable Ryokan!
I stayed in a room with an open-air bath and found the accommodation to be calm and not overly extravagant, making for a very comfortable stay. The customer service was well-balanced, and the meals were delicious. The variety of alcoholic beverages during dinner was impressive and enjoyable, though I felt it would be nice to have more options for glass wine. Overall, it was an excellent accommodation and perfect for a one-night stay before or after visiting Sapporo.

It was a very good accommodation.
I made a last-minute reservation, and it turned out to be a great accommodation. Onsen The open-air and indoor baths were just to my liking. My skin felt smooth afterward. Accommodation The room was a Japanese-Western style, comfortable to stay in. The lobby on the 2nd and 1st floors offered great views and was also very relaxing. After check-in, they served different welcome drinks at different times, which was a thoughtful touch that kept me entertained even with an early check-in. The hospitality was excellent. Meals Dinner wasn’t just luxurious but enjoyable both visually and in taste. Breakfast had an elegant selection of dishes that I thoroughly enjoyed as well.

A quiet and relaxing place.
The accommodation is always quiet and peaceful, perhaps due to the age restrictions. I love enjoying delicious tea at the 2nd-floor terrace lounge while admiring the beautiful sunsets and sunrises. The room with an open-air bath this time was fantastic, featuring a bright and clean bathroom and a spacious bed. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious. The smiles of the staff were also very comforting, making this a place I want to visit at least once a year. Thank you very much!

Used at the end of the year.
Overall, the experience was disappointing. It was the first time I received cold dishes in a course meal. Whether it was due to staff shortages or slow service, the food ended up being ruined. The sparkling wine served as a welcome drink wasn’t chilled enough, and the snacks were underwhelming. The lounge on the second floor had a lovely atmosphere, but only tea service was available. While it may not be my place to say, I feel that with more effort this could become an exceptional accommodation—it seems like such a missed opportunity. Perhaps they are focusing on inbound tourists? Since this stay marked the end of our year, I trusted that everything would be fine with Suiyantei when making my reservation, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations.

Relaxation Near Lake Shikotsu
I stayed at the group's "Kuchu Suizan" in January and was very satisfied, so I was looking forward to this visit as well. The shuttle service from Chitose Station was very convenient. With Lake Shikotsu nearby, it’s a perfect location. All the meals were delicious, and I enjoyed inari sushi as a late-night snack, leaving me completely full. The sangria at the lounge had a nice spice kick, and the handmade soy milk chocolate and chewy tofu were also delightful. The onsen's open-air bath had just the right temperature; however, I didn’t know that the bath next to it was under maintenance, which was disappointing. All staff members provided excellent hospitality and made my stay pleasant. Next time, I hope to visit when all onsen facilities are available for use.
