Unzen Kanko Hotel
A lovely classic Hotel. The Room was a premium room on the third floor. Although there was no elevator and climbing to the third floor via stairs was a bit challenging due to age, the soft carpet on the stairs made it pleasant and not too difficult. The sound of the dinner bell gave a unique Nagasaki feel. The dining hall had high ceilings and was so spacious that it seemed suitable for hosting a ball, which was surprising. The French course meal was elegant and delicious. The staff provided courteous service, which was very nice. After dinner, we enjoyed some time at the billiard room (it was my first time playing billiards). The next morning, after breakfast, we relaxed in our Room until check-out time as there was still some time left. We checked out with feelings of reluctance to leave. I would love to stay at Unzen Kanko Hotel again someday! Thank you for your hospitality!

A true classic Hotel. A resort for adults.
Walking up to the main entrance, flanked by rows of trees, already heightens your expectations. The exterior, interior design, rooms, and every staff member reflect the Hotel's tradition and pride. The French dinner was exquisite, with every dish being a delight. I couldn't resist trying all the desserts from the wagon service. The breakfast omelet was not only visually stunning but also felt like a celebration to start the day on a high note. This level of satisfaction at this price is unparalleled in the Kanto area. A truly memorable trip—thank you!

First Trip to Nagasaki
Booked accommodation for the final day of a long-planned Nagasaki trip that had been postponed several times due to COVID-19 and other reasons. The classic architecture, which felt almost un-Japanese, and the warm hospitality were very satisfying. When I requested my fried egg "well-done" for breakfast, it seemed to be interpreted as "sunny-side up," which was a slight misunderstanding, but other than that, it was an excellent hotel! Thank you very much.

The beautifully approached Hotel is perfectly arranged.
The beautifully approached Hotel is perfectly arranged. Unzen Kanko Hotel has always been a place of admiration. Although it is not close to Tokyo, it is a remarkable Hotel worth visiting. Once you visit, you'll immediately understand why. The comfort felt within its classical atmosphere, the warm hospitality of the staff, high-quality hot springs, and delicious meals—everything harmonizes beautifully. Unzen Kanko Hotel is a legendary Accommodation that deserves to be cherished for generations to come. It truly is an exceptional Accommodation.

Unforgettable and Wonderful Experience in Unzen
At the end of a tree-lined approach, a lodge-style exterior welcomes you, and warm hospitality begins from the moment your car arrives. The lobby, main dining area, bar, and all spaces exude elegance, with dinner and drinks at the bar offering a sense of 90 years of history. Both the large public bath and family bath feature Onsen with free-flowing hot spring water. Despite its historic architecture, the property is well-maintained and impeccably clean. From the balcony of the deluxe twin room, enjoy views of Unzen Onsen's mountain range surrounded by lush greenery. Breakfast offers both Western and Japanese options that are equally satisfying. Experience an extraordinary stay at this classic Hotel celebrating its 90th anniversary amidst Unzen's natural beauty. If given another opportunity to visit, playing golf at a nearby course would also be delightful!

A memorable stay.
First, I was captivated by the beautiful exterior. The location was excellent, allowing me to enjoy strolling around Unzen Jigoku in the morning and evening. I chose a compact room type, but it had a charming classic hotel feel that seemed untouched over time. The retro Onsen was available for private use, which was incredibly relaxing. The hospitality was outstanding! The meals were delicious as well! As someone who loves sweets, I was especially satisfied with the desserts. I’ll visit again for the cheesecake!

Passport Journey
This was the farthest trip from Kanto requiring a passport. Although both of us fell ill during the journey, we managed to get through it. The interior of the Hotel was relatively dim, giving it a sense of grandeur. The senior staff worked efficiently and were reliable, easily handling heavy luggage and driving tasks. The sulfur hot spring water wasn’t too strong, making it enjoyable. We also made use of the private family bath. The Hotel had a compact design, and apart from meal times, we rarely encountered others in the hallways, making it very quiet. Unexpectedly, all of Kyushu was quite hot during our visit, so we stayed indoors at Unzen for rest and recovery—this was the only disappointment. The meals were delicious; freshly baked bread at night was worth seconds. In the morning, however, dishes came out in an irregular order due to timing issues; by the time the final omelet arrived, I was too full to eat it. As we headed homeward thinking about when we might return again someday—it’s so far away after all!

As expected of a traditional Hotel.
Renovated while maintaining its traditional charm, it is truly wonderful. It fully embodies the elegance of a classic tourist Hotel. The food was decent. The French toast in the morning was generously portioned.

It was a wonderful Hotel.
The service, atmosphere, and dining were all wonderful at this Hotel. I enjoy visiting classic Hotels, and this one had the most relaxing ambiance. The Shuttle Service from Nagasaki Airport was also very helpful. I would love to visit again.

A Hotel you can visit again and again.
I have visited 7 times already. It's a Hotel worth visiting repeatedly. My wife feels comfortable there, and it seems to bring her peace of mind.

Historic Hotel
The Hotel had a very elegant and historical atmosphere. The staff were friendly and provided attentive service. Above all, the Onsen water was exceptional. It was adjusted to a perfect temperature—not too hot, not too cold—and the water was incredibly clean. As expected from a natural free-flowing hot spring. I would love to visit again. Of course, the meals were also delicious. Thank you for the wonderful memories!

I visit one hotel fr...
I visit one hotel from the Japan Classic Hotel Association each year. Although access to Unzen Kanko Hotel seemed challenging, I used the Shuttle Service from the airport and was impressed by the driver's hospitality and informative sightseeing guidance during the journey. It made me wish I had visited sooner, as it was so convenient. For meals, I chose Western cuisine for both mornings and evenings over two days. The menu did not repeat, and both taste and portion sizes were my favorite among classic hotels. The course featuring game meat on the second day was particularly delightful for me. Choosing desserts from a wagon added a fun touch to the experience. The serving pace was just right, allowing us to finish in about an hour without feeling rushed or waiting too long. The building has historical charm, which means some inconveniences like no elevator; however, this is part of its appeal for me. Renovated areas were clean and well-maintained, making my stay comfortable overall. My husband especially enjoyed using the billiard room multiple times during our stay. Having a large public bath is relatively rare among classic hotels, I think? Being able to move around in loungewear or slippers made it very convenient and relaxing—I ended up using it several times! If anything could be improved, perhaps unifying all hair dryers in the public bath with Ionity models would be nice. It was such a wonderful hotel that I would love to visit again!

The partition in the movie room is unclear.
The DVD viewing room is available for free use. However, when the inner curtain is closed, it is unclear if the room is in use. While there is no prior usage registration system, there are also no signs indicating occupancy, and the front desk does not monitor its usage. Simply relying on a closed curtain makes it difficult to determine availability. To avoid interruptions that may upset users and prevent misunderstandings or discomfort among guests, we recommend implementing a clear system to indicate whether the room is in use.

The Essence of a Classic Hotel
I have stayed at Unzen Kanko Hotel several times, including a family trip during my elementary school days, a two-person trip with my son during the Golden Week of Reiwa 1, and this solo trip. During the trip with my son, I saw myself as an elementary school student reflected in him. On this journey, memories of traveling with my family decades ago came flooding back vividly as if they happened yesterday, filling me with emotion. I love classic hotels and have stayed at many over the years. However, Unzen Kanko Hotel stands out for its dignified atmosphere that permeates throughout the property; its furnishings that combine the warmth of wood with sophistication; its "Unzen French" cuisine—a masterpiece blending locally sourced ingredients and Nagasaki's history into French culinary art; and above all else, its hospitality—rooted in tradition yet exuding both warmth and refinement from every staff member. Truly deserving of being called "The Classic Hotel." As you celebrate your 90th anniversary next month, I hope you continue to build on your history toward your 100th anniversary and beyond for future generations to enjoy while adding vibrant pages to our family's cherished memories. Thank you so much to all the staff members! I look forward to staying here again without fail.

Luxury Hotel in Unzen
Be amazed by this luxurious Hotel built in the early Showa era. Modern hotels rarely have facilities like a billiard room, library, or screening room. The baths are elegant and spacious, offering ultimate relaxation. At the entrance to the men’s and women’s baths, there is a large area with impressive chairs where you can enjoy cold water in a glass while admiring the greenery outside as you wait for your companion. We tried their Japanese Kaiseki cuisine, which they started serving last year. Almost all ingredients are sourced from Shimabara, and after the meal, the chef personally greeted each table. While I previously associated Unzen with volcanic disaster sites, my perspective has completely changed. This is an Onsen destination I would love to visit again!

Congratulations on your 90th anniversary!
As a classic hotel, should guests have to endure inconveniences to preserve its charm? The architecture, furniture, and stained glass windows are indeed wonderful and worth preserving. However, the stifling waffle fabric pajamas, air conditioning that cannot be properly adjusted, the yellowed cat-shaped bathtub that is more unusual than practical, and the carpet full of stains make one wonder if it’s time to consider changes from the guests' perspective. At 11 PM, I headed to the public bath but found the hallway dimly lit with most lights turned off. It was too scary for a woman alone to walk through. I had my daughters accompany me only to find upon arrival that nothing had been cleaned since we used it at 6 PM—the hairdryer was still in its previous position and used towels were piled up. Is it acceptable for no cleaning or inspection to occur between 6 PM and 11 PM? Nowadays most accommodations conduct multiple cleanings or inspections throughout such hours. The only highlight was the shuttle service to Isahaya Station. The driver kindly shared information about Nagasaki's famous sweets, potato varieties, and hydrangea origins while also taking us by Megane Bridge and terraced rice fields along the way—this thoughtful gesture made us happy. Thank you very much!

Fully equipped for accessibility and highly satisfying.
Stayed to celebrate my mother's 88th birthday. Since my mother has difficulty walking, we used a barrier-free room. The Hotel staff were incredibly kind and helpful during her wheelchair movements. Dinner featured a thoughtfully crafted menu suitable for the terroir, and at the Bar afterward, we enjoyed delightful conversations with an experienced bartender and even played darts for the first time in decades. The French toast at breakfast was absolutely exquisite. The Onsen was at a perfect temperature, allowing us to relax and enjoy a blissful moment of peace. We would love to visit again!

Feel the history.
This Hotel is a charming building located in the Onsen town of Unzen. Enjoy the serene atmosphere of this 90-year-old structure filled with history. The quality and ambiance of the Onsen were excellent. Dinner was delightful, served in the dining area instead of a restaurant. Play billiards and enjoy a drink at the bar. A quiet and timelessly elegant Hotel with a nostalgic charm.

No changes were made at all.
Stayed here for the first time in 20 years, and the atmosphere and service remain completely unchanged, making it a surprisingly delightful stay. The impact of inbound tourism is minimal, allowing for a calm and relaxing experience. This is an accommodation I hope will continue just as it is forever!

It was a very lovely classic Hotel.
We visited for our wedding anniversary. After making the reservation, I unfortunately fractured a bone and realized three days before our stay that the hotel had no elevator. I thought we might have to cancel, but after consulting with the staff and receiving various accommodations, I’m glad we decided to go despite the circumstances. The welcome drink, cookies, sweets, tea, and coffee in the room were all delicious. The room amenities were well-stocked and made me happy just looking at them. Dinner was incredibly tasty, and I was thrilled to finally enjoy the cheesecake I had been looking forward to. The only disappointment was that we had informed beforehand about visiting for our wedding anniversary as well as my intention of expressing gratitude toward my husband. The staff mentioned they would take photos during dinner as part of their service, so I was excited about it. I noticed other tables being approached with music playing while photos were taken and wondered if ours would be next—but nothing happened in the end. Since it was meant to be a surprise for my husband, I couldn’t confirm anything during dinner either; ultimately, we left without taking any photos together during our meal. That remains a significant regret even now.

The Last Hotel of the Classic Hotel Tour
Starting the journey of visiting classic hotels, this was the final one. The Hotel had a calm atmosphere and provided a very comfortable environment. Compared to other classic hotels, the staff here were older in age, but their composed manner of speaking, attentive service, and thoughtful care were exceptional. It was a truly wonderful experience compared to other hotels.

Stayed in Unzen to stay at this hotel.
I have been traveling around staying at registered tangible cultural property accommodations and classic hotels across the whole country. This time, I came all the way to Unzen with the purpose of staying at Unzen Kanko Hotel. The room I stayed in was on the third floor as requested, featuring William Morris's Blackthorn green wallpaper. The room was spacious enough, and its heavy use of wood gave it a solid and chic atmosphere, which I really liked. However, there was a slight smell in the room, and I noticed some old stains on the carpet that bothered me. The wallpaper seemed recently replaced and looked clean but felt somewhat cheap compared to my expectation of embroidered wallpaper. Upon checking online, it appeared to be sold for about 30,000 yen per roll (52cm width x 10m). What I appreciated most was how quiet both the lobby area and surroundings were; I hardly encountered other guests during my stay. Although slightly small in size, the public bath had a charming retro vibe that added to its appeal. The quality of hot spring water felt slightly lacking—perhaps due to being far from its source—but it was still enjoyable overall. On a less positive note: dinner did not suit my taste as much as I'd hoped for. One dish was completely inedible for me; thankfully they substituted wild boar meat with beef upon request so that part worked out fine. Since desserts are also not something I'm fond of eating after meals—it could’ve been problematic if beef wasn’t available leaving me hungry overnight instead! Breakfast turned out better without any dislikes involved making everything deliciously satisfying. In conclusion: While certain aspects fell short compared against expectations initially set beforehand, getting chance fulfilling dream-stay inside desired accommodation-room made entire journey worthwhile ultimately feeling grateful towards experience altogether!

I had a very relaxing time. After arriving, I wanted to visit Shimabara, which was not included in my original travel plan, and the staff kindly provided advice on access and various arrangements. The warm hospitality of all the staff, from the shuttle service driver to the front desk and dining service, left a lasting impression.

Would love to visit again!
"Welcome back!" was the warm greeting we received, and our stay continued in a cozy, home-like atmosphere. The staff's hospitality was outstanding, even among the classic hotels we've visited before. The shuttle service from Isahaya Station included sightseeing both ways (what a surprise!), and it was clear that the hotel staff, who might be considered a local treasure, truly love this Hotel. Their passion made us feel more attached to it as well. We enjoyed playing board games in the library and indulging in Unzen's natural hot spring baths... The Room had a balcony where we could step outside, which was delightful (though having chairs on the balcony would have been even better). It’s a Hotel where I wished to stay longer than just one night!

I stayed at a classic hotel for the first time. By chance, there were fireworks on the night of my stay, and watching them from the room amidst the falling snow was magical. The large public bath was said to have an open-air bath, so I went to see it, only to find it was about one tatami mat in size! For dinner, I chose Japanese cuisine. The portion felt a bit lacking, but the taste was delicious. I also chose Japanese cuisine for breakfast; however, it took a very long time to be served... (I waited 20 minutes). While Western dishes were served quickly, only the Japanese breakfast took forever to arrive. I've had breakfast in many places before but never had to wait this long without even an apology for keeping me waiting; it left me feeling very disappointed. As a result, I couldn't enjoy the onsen after breakfast... leaving with quite a disappointing feeling as I departed from the hotel.

Kyushu Travel
The other day, while touring Kyushu, I was able to cancel my stay in Fukuoka and stay at the Unzen Kanko Hotel, which I had wanted to stay at for a long time. I was delighted to stay at this historic hotel, and the dinner was delicious, and the hot springs were satisfying. Although it was a sudden change in itinerary, I couldn't change my return flight, so I had to forgo breakfast due to the early departure. However, at checkout, I was able to receive a castella. I appreciate their thoughtfulness.

A Quiet and Sophisticated Time
I had been looking forward to staying at this Hotel for a long time, and I was excited about my stay. I believe this Hotel fully lived up to my expectations. Having visited almost all of the so-called classic Hotels, I felt that this one stood out as particularly calming. Perhaps due to the limited number of guest rooms, the staff provided attentive service, allowing me to enjoy a relaxing time. The most memorable feature was the large public bath. It had a retro and charming atmosphere, and I could tell it was well-maintained. The food was delicious, and I especially enjoyed the dessert served via a wagon service, which was a delightful experience. Thank you for providing such a wonderful time.

Memorable Accommodation
The Hotel is beautifully set against a backdrop of nature, with its interior pillars, beams, carpets, wallpaper, furnishings, and bathrooms exuding a timeless and elegant charm. The guest rooms offer a serene atmosphere with the contrast between the views from the windows and balconies and the wallpaper. Additionally, the amenities were not only well-thought-out but also conveniently packaged for easy carrying. The service in the main dining area was refined and sophisticated, while in the Japanese restaurant it was friendly and showcased the quality of locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed a peaceful stay amidst quietly flowing time. Thank you to everyone for your hospitality.

Despite being January 2nd, it was not crowded and pleasantly quiet. The retro atmosphere was nice. There was only one key, so it was inconvenient when going to the large public bath as the return times varied. Staying for just one night felt like a waste, and I wished I could stay another night.
