Enjoy a calm, relaxing atmosphere.
It was my first stay in a while, and it remains a wonderful Hotel. The approach leading straight from the public road to the main entrance is elegant and picturesque. Since it opened in 1935, the Facilities are not the latest, but that is exactly what gives it a unique charm. The staff’s service was also impeccable. For dinner, we enjoyed classic French cuisine rather than today’s modern fusion style—it was delicious. As is true of Unzen’s tourist areas in general, this historic destination is rich in nature, and I imagine maintaining both the Facilities and the gardens must be challenging for those in tourism. I’m sure there are many difficulties, but I truly hope you will continue to preserve this beautiful Hotel.

Attentive service
We stayed for one night from August 3. True to a classic Hotel, it had a stately presence and a wonderfully calm atmosphere! There are two bathing options: a private family bath and a large public bath; the large public bath was stylishly appointed. Dinner was French, and breakfast could be chosen from Japanese or Western options—both dinner and breakfast were delicious! That day, temperatures were unusually high across many areas. Even though guidebooks say Unzen is around 22°C in summer, Unzen was hot as well. Our Room was on the third floor. Although the air conditioner was on, it was so hot outside—and being directly under the roof (a three-story building)—that the Room temperature wouldn’t go down. So we contacted the front desk to ask if they could lend us something like a fan, and they promptly brought us an air circulator, which made our stay comfortable. While there are limits to what can be done against extreme weather, we truly appreciate how quickly the staff responded and resolved the issue.

Revisiting after more than 50 years
On recent trips, I choose to stay at a traditional Hotel and enjoy French cuisine made with local ingredients, and this Unzen Kanko Hotel is also the place where I first tasted authentic French cuisine more than 50 years ago, which made it especially moving for me. The stately building and the calm entrance are exactly as they appear—please take a look on the website. As it is a European-style Hotel, the large public bath building may feel slightly out of place, but the Onsen itself is satisfying. Finally, the long-cherished serving plates are also a delight to see, and I hope many people will enjoy French cuisine beautifully presented on them. When I visit Nagasaki again, I would like to extend my trip to Unzen and return here.

A Hotel I Definitely Want to Stay at Again
As I wasn’t familiar with the area, I requested round-trip Shuttle Service from the Hotel. From the very start, the driver’s hospitality greatly raised my expectations for the Hotel. Not only was he courteous, but he also shared stories about Nagasaki’s sightseeing spots and even checked in about restroom needs. He was very knowledgeable about Nagasaki tourism, and it was a truly enjoyable time. Upon arriving at the Hotel, we were warmly welcomed by the staff. The building itself is wonderful—so much so that it felt like stepping into a classic Hotel from years past, with an atmosphere that evokes that era. The fresh flowers in the entrance also matched the ambiance beautifully. The welcome drink was delicious as well. As I enjoy visiting classic Hotels and was more interested in the Hotel itself than nearby sightseeing, I was delighted when they offered to guide me around and explain things. Everyone was highly knowledgeable, responded sincerely to my questions, and conveyed a strong sense of pride in their Hotel. At other classic Hotels, explanations of history are usually limited to displays or brochures rather than personal guidance, so I was impressed by how attentive this Hotel was. For dinner I chose a full French course meal, and for breakfast I had a Western-style option (French toast). Of course everything tasted excellent, but what stood out most was how they paid attention to my pace and served each dish at exactly the right time. At other Hotels service can sometimes be too slow or too fast, but here it never felt that way—I could enjoy my meal slowly and comfortably. The driver had recommended loquat juice (biwa), so I ordered it; it was fresh and very delicious. The sweets wagon I had been looking forward to was also wonderful—everything tasted great. Since it seems to change by season, I would love to come back again just for that. I’m glad I ordered the French toast at breakfast. I also stopped by the bar; it had a lovely atmosphere and the bartender’s service was excellent. As I had eaten quite a lot already, I wanted something lower in alcohol content, and he suggested drinks that perfectly matched my request. This was my fourth classic Hotel stay so far, but this one felt like the best of them all—not only because of its architecture, but because every staff member provided outstandingly thoughtful service that left me feeling refreshed. It is absolutely a Hotel where I want to stay again. Thank you very much.

An exceptional space.
More than things—make memories. Spend a moment of your life in a one-of-a-kind space with the people who matter most to you. Decide whether it’s expensive or affordable based on the experience. We are grateful for this space, once again.

A Refined Classic Hotel
Both the building and the staff made this a truly wonderful Accommodation. Every year, I look forward to staying at a classic Hotel for my birthday, and this time I chose this Hotel for my stay. After arriving at Nagasaki Airport by plane, I took a local bus to the Hotel. Transportation was running as usual, but the weather wasn’t great, so I ended up arriving early. I stopped by hoping you could store my luggage until check-in, and a staff member warmly welcomed me at the entrance. They kindly lent me towels out of concern for my wet bags, and I was able to wait in the library until check-in. They also accommodated an early check-in, which allowed me to relax in my Room and recover from the trip. For dinner, I chose a Western full-course meal. In a calm atmosphere with attentive service, I thoroughly enjoyed an excellent meal. The dessert cart was especially fun because there were so many options to choose from. The bread was served warm—soft and delicious—and I ate it quickly; they kindly offered more, but after finishing dessert I felt completely full, so in hindsight it was probably best not to overindulge even though it was so good. In the basement there is an Onsen with both an indoor bath and an outdoor bath (not large), and I was very happy to be able to enjoy an Onsen while staying at a classic Hotel. Although I traveled alone, everything—from check-in to check-out, including during meals—was extremely comfortable, and it helped me feel refreshed and ready to do my best for another year. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience.

Using locally sourced ingredients
Local ingredients are crafted into original European-style dishes. The previous Japanese course, thoughtfully created by the head chef, was truly impressive, and this time the Western-style meal was also carefully selected from the finest ingredients and absolutely delicious. I was so full that I barely had room for dessert.

A Journey with the Classic Hotel Passport
In a light drizzle and mist, an enchanting Hotel comes into view beyond beautifully manicured trees, raising expectations. Stepping inside, you’re struck by the grand, solidly built lobby—an expansive space with few pillars—where ikebana arrangements and a large staircase immediately catch the eye. For our Room, we chose Special Room 205 above the main entrance, where Emperor Showa stayed in 1961. With a dining room and terrace as well, it’s spacious, yet reasonably priced compared with other Hotels. We didn’t use the clawfoot tub in the Room; instead, although not very large, the classic-modern bathroom offers excellent Onsen water. The Hotel also has a screening room, library, billiards room, and more—perfect for a relaxed stay to enjoy luxurious space and time at your leisure. Of course, both staff service and meals are impeccable—truly worthy of Unzen Kanko Hotel. Some classic Hotels offer guided tours of their interiors; if such a tour were available here as well, it would further enhance the Hotel’s appeal and create even deeper memories—something I hope you will consider. Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hell), an easy walk from the Hotel, is a highly recommended spot that can be enjoyed free of charge. The intense heat and power of high-temperature Onsen steam erupting from the ground is incredible—and knowing it was once used as a brutal execution site during Christian persecutions makes it all the more moving.

We were extremely satisfied! This is likely among the very best classic Hotels.
The calm atmosphere made for a very comfortable stay, and everything—from the interior design and furnishings to the fresh flowers on display—was tasteful. All of the staff were kind, and it truly felt like they were providing service from the heart. For example, when we asked for a photo at the entrance, they kindly guided us to recommended spots such as the doorway and even out by the street trees, taking many photos for us. The Room was clean and had a lovely ambiance; features like the clawfoot bathtub, balcony, and solid door knocker really gave it that classic Hotel feel. The amenities were also stylish, which was a nice touch. The Onsen is quite strongly acidic, but its Western-style atmosphere suited this classic Hotel perfectly, and I was happy there was also an open-air bath. I also appreciated the attentive details after bathing—such as providing glasses instead of paper cups at the water dispenser. The private family bath is on the smaller side, but it has chairs and a relaxing atmosphere that we enjoyed. Dining was excellent as well: in a classical main dining room setting, we enjoyed a full-course meal featuring plenty of local ingredients, with thoughtful plating and tableware that made it even more enjoyable. Above all, the dessert wagon service was outstanding—I ate far too much. For breakfast we chose Western-style dishes and added French toast; it was more than filling enough and of course delicious. We were extremely satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. This was my eighth classic Hotel stay so far, but I’m sure this one ranks in my top three. The serene atmosphere, heartfelt service, Facilities including the Onsen baths, and meals using local ingredients—all of it delivered an exceptionally high level of satisfaction. It’s quite far from Kanto, but I would definitely like to return again.

The best Hotel in a beautifully renovated historic building
Unfortunately, the weather was poor so we couldn’t go sightseeing, but instead we were able to enjoy a fulfilling time inside the Hotel. The Room and bath were spotlessly cleaned and very comfortable. The amenities were plentiful, which is rare these days. Near the entrance to the large public bath, the cold-water dispenser had glass cups provided—more eco-friendly than paper cups and truly impressive. The senior staff showed a high level of professionalism in hospitality, and I hope it will be passed on to the younger staff.

A Lovely Classic Hotel
I visited as part of a trip to explore classic Hotels. From Tokyo, I flew to Fukuoka, then took the limited express and Shinkansen to Isahaya Station. From Isahaya Station, the Hotel’s shared shuttle taxi came to pick me up! The driver was great company, and I really enjoyed hearing stories about the history of ceramics and Nagasaki castella. The Hotel we arrived at has a charming exterior with Swiss-inspired architecture. Inside is a solid wooden structure with several impressive pillars—well worth seeing. The overall atmosphere is calm and refined, and the service is truly first-class. The restaurant has high ceilings and an elegant, weighty feel—a reminder that it once hosted balls. The French course dinner was excellent and delicious. The portions were just right, and I had so much fun choosing from the wide selection of sweets. I also enjoyed relaxing conversations in the bar at night.

A Classic Hotel with Excellent Japanese Cuisine
During my three-night, four-day trip to Unzen, I stayed at Unzen Kanko Hotel on the first and third nights. As a classic Hotel, it is well known for its French cuisine. Since I chose Western-style dishes for both dinner and breakfast on the first day, on my last day I decided to have Japanese-style dinner and breakfast. Not only the Western cuisine but also each Japanese dish was truly delicious—exactly what you would expect from a classic Hotel. The meals featured plenty of local ingredients, and because it was Japanese cuisine in particular, I was especially moved by how wonderful the sashimi was. At breakfast as well, I was surprised that for an additional fee of just under 1,000 yen I could enjoy such delicious sea bream chazuke—this too was exceptional. On both the first and second days, the non-alcoholic mimosa served as a welcome drink was outstanding; among all the welcome drinks I have ever had, it ranks among the very best. On the first night I chose a Room with a slightly larger double bed, and on the second night a Room with two slightly smaller single beds. This one had a balcony as well, and the view from there was truly lovely. Nearby there is also “Jigoku,” famous for its white steam vents, as well as Oshidori Pond (Oshidori Ike), a pond created by damming a river that can be walked around in about 50 minutes. I also got to see Miyama Kirishima azaleas just beginning to bloom—it made for an absolutely wonderful stay. The spacious lobby even displayed calligraphy by Sun Yat-sen, making it an excellent stay where I could truly feel history and culture. On my way back, once again I was driven from the Hotel to Nagasaki Airport by the same very knowledgeable and kind driver as on my first day. Thanks to this hospitality, I had an enjoyable and wonderful three-night stay. Thank you very much for taking such good care of me. I would love to visit again.

A Wonderful Classic Hotel I Discovered in Nagasaki for the First Time in Decades
Although I had visited Nagasaki on school and company trips, this was my first trip back in several decades. Back then I stayed near Omura Bay, so this was my first time visiting Unzen. As it had just rained, we made our way from Nagasaki Airport by Shuttle Service along a winding mountain road where visibility was only a few meters. The journey took just under two hours, but the driver’s wide knowledge and enjoyable conversation—and his wonderful personality—made the time fly. When we arrived, the fog was so thick that I could barely see the distinctive exterior of the building. At an altitude of around 700 meters, it was cold enough that they kindly turned on the heater both in the taxi and at the Hotel entrance, and I could truly understand why this area once developed as a summer retreat for overseas visitors in the early Showa era. Thanks to such warm hospitality in both car and Hotel after traveling nonstop by plane and car since leaving home, all my fatigue disappeared. The Onsen we entered right away was a milky-white acidic spring with a slight tingling sensation. With a source temperature over 90°C, it felt pleasantly hot even with added water, and its warmth lingered long after bathing—truly excellent water. The interiors were also filled with dignified and beautiful details; it constantly reminded me that this is indeed a classic Hotel. I had heard that the food was outstanding, and both dinner (French cuisine) and breakfast were genuinely delicious down to every single dish. Considering meals are included, I felt the price was very reasonable. The real candles lit on each table were also wonderful. The famous French toast lived up to its reputation as well—you can taste how carefully it is prepared from the day before. The next day brought clear skies, and I greatly enjoyed strolling through views of “Jigoku,” with white steam rising—scenery I couldn’t see at all from inside the car on arrival day. Miyama Kirishima wasn’t quite in season yet with only a few blooms out, but I was delighted to catch some lingering cherry blossoms. I’ve been visiting various classic Hotels to collect stamps for my Classic Hotel Passport; while each one has been truly impressive, Unzen Kanko Hotel stood out as exceptional—I almost regret not having come to such a wonderful place sooner. Thanks to the Classic Hotel Passport program, I’m very glad I had this opportunity to visit.

The person who provided the Shuttle Service from Nagasaki Airport was very entertaining, and we had a great time during the ride. I bought the cascade they told us about to take home. The Hotel has an Onsen, and we were able to relax using it, including the private family bath. The food was delicious, especially dinner. The Hotel staff were kind and left a great impression—for example, they spoke to us when we seemed unsure about something. By using the passport to visit classic hotels, we were able to learn a lot. Thank you for taking such good care of us. I hope to visit again.

Top-rated.
I am both amazed and deeply grateful that this historic building has been preserved to this day—especially while still being used as an active Hotel. I also heard that it remained open even during the eruption of Mount Unzen-Fugendake. Everyone involved must have been extremely worried at the time. The staff’s pleasant service reflected the pride of a long-established Hotel. Both the bath and the Room were excellent, and we chose Japanese cuisine for dinner; the portion size was just right for middle-aged and older guests. Of course, both the food quality and the drinks met our expectations. There was also a good selection of souvenirs, and even though it was only the start of our trip, we ended up buying too much. As someone who values reliability above all else, I am very satisfied that this was the best possible choice. I am already looking forward to visiting again. Thank you very much.

Staffing shortage?
Perhaps because there were only seven parties staying during dinner and breakfast, there was no staff member at the front desk, and when someone did come out, they even gave us the wrong Room key. While this classic Hotel has good facilities, the service was poor. It was truly disappointing.

Classic Hotel Passport (2nd Round)
This was my second stay as part of the Classic Hotel Passport program. It met my expectations and was just as satisfying as my stay in 2019. At the front desk, we received a courteous explanation of the facilities, and the guidance to our Room was appropriate. Our Room had a balcony and faced the main entrance side. The bath area is bright with a semi-circular tub, making it easy to relax and soak at length. The open-air bath is compact but still comfortable for an unhurried soak. Dinner was served in a dignified, calm atmosphere, and we enjoyed creative, delicious dishes. Desserts were brought around on a wagon so we could choose what we liked, and they were excellent. For breakfast, I added French toast; it’s very tasty, but it makes the meal quite filling, so I recommend swapping it for the bread instead. This is a Hotel I would like to stay at again whenever I visit Kyushu.

A dinner notification bell
I stayed here three years ago in May to see the azaleas at night. I was surprised to learn about the tragedy of the Hidden Christians in Unzen and that it was once a summer retreat for visitors from overseas. The Hotel’s library, billiard room, screening room, and spacious main dining room still reminded me of those days. I visited again in winter after hearing that they light the fireplace in the bar. The real wood-burning fireplace they lit for us was wonderful. It was also lovely that they rang the dinner drum, which is just decoration at other places. Last time, I tried razor clams for the first time and they were delicious. I had always thought clam digging meant short-neck clams, so I was surprised to hear that here it’s razor clams. I’d like to visit again during razor clam season.

Quiet Time
A Hotel I had always wanted to stay at. It had a very calm atmosphere, and I was able to spend a quiet, relaxing time. The bath, the room—everything was comfortable. The food was delicious, and the service truly lived up to expectations. At the bar, I enjoyed an unhurried evening watching the fireplace flames and made unforgettable memories. The next day, when I accidentally wandered into a back street during a walk and got lost, a staff member who didn’t appear to be from the front desk kindly showed me the way, and I felt the warmth and hospitality of the Hotel as a whole.

Went on a 60th birthday trip.
My wife and I went on a 60th birthday trip. We finally stayed at the Hotel we had wanted to visit for over ten years. It exceeded our expectations—better than YouTube! Having stayed at various Hotels both domestically and internationally, this became my favorite. After all, where else can you find a classical Hotel with an Onsen in the large public bath and delicious French cuisine? We chose the Premium Twin Room, which was another highlight—a wonderfully calming Room. I hope to stay here again before I die. The staff were true professionals—absolutely impressive. Thank you very much!

Christmas at the Mountain Lodge
In December, the lobby was adorned with a Christmas tree, and the front of the Hotel was beautifully lit up. I enjoyed the festive Christmas atmosphere at this Swiss chalet-style Hotel. The guest room had a cozy mountain lodge vibe, and I relaxed with tea and sweets served in William Morris mugs. The meals featured ingredients from Shimabara and were absolutely delicious. The venison with antler vinegar sauce for dinner, Gorgonzola cheesecake, and sea bream chazuke for breakfast were all unforgettable. For lunch (available only on weekends?), I had curry rice. The bar exuded an old-world charm reminiscent of a bygone era. The Hotel staff maintained just the right level of interaction, which left a positive impression. The shuttle service between Nagasaki Airport and the Hotel was incredibly convenient. However, one downside was that there is no elevator (understandable given it’s a classic Hotel). I loved spending time in the library so much that even after checking out, I stayed to read for a while. The bathroom facilities in the guest room were well-maintained and comfortable to use. Although Unzen is somewhat remote to access, if you appreciate classic ambiance, this Accommodation is highly recommended!

The cost performance was excellent.
The stay was so satisfying that it made me wonder if the price was really this reasonable. The architecture and ambiance were wonderful, and the meals using local ingredients exceeded expectations. We also enjoyed the family bath as part of the Diamond Member benefits, allowing us to experience Onsen at our preferred water temperature, which was fantastic. I would definitely like to visit again. One disappointing point was that although we wanted to take advantage of the 12 PM late check-out, the public bath closed early at 9 AM. Additionally, it was hard to rest due to loud cleaning noises from other rooms on the same floor when trying to nap again, leaving us with nothing much to do. It would have been even better if there had been more consideration for guests using late check-out services. As for amenities, I appreciated having Acca Kappa hand wash and Omnisens shampoo products—great choices! A shower cap would have been a nice addition as well.

The shuttle bus pick-up service from Isahaya Station was very helpful. Also, the meals were absolutely delicious. The dessert wagon, which is rare to see these days, was a delightful surprise. However, aside from check-in, there seemed to be fewer staff overall, and it felt a bit lonely when leaving the Hotel as no one was around. Perhaps this is due to the current labor shortage? Overall, I am satisfied. Thank you very much!
