    A wonderful accommodation that skillfully blends history, tradition, and modernity.

    Having stayed at over 500 accommodations, this one ranks at the highest level of satisfaction. While many facilities offer luxurious dinners but ordinary breakfasts, the breakfast at Ohanan was exceptional and made for a truly wonderful morning.

    Thrilled to visit the long-awaited cultural heritage site, "Yanagawa Domain Lord Tachibana Residence Ohana"!

    Finally, I had the chance to stay at "Ohana," which reopened this January after renovations. This historic accommodation is operated by the descendants of Muneshige Tachibana, a Sengoku-era samurai known for his undefeated record and unique position as the lord of Yanagawa despite siding with the Western Army at Sekigahara. The legacy of the Tachibana family, preserved over 18 generations, is truly fascinating. From Fukuoka Station, it takes about 50 minutes by express train to Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station. At the station's tourist information center, I was introduced to a relaxing one-hour boat ride that conveniently brought me right to Ohana's entrance. Arriving slightly early, I rested in the lounge and was thrilled to meet the current head of the family in person—a memorable experience! Staying in such a cultural heritage site is rare and precious; similar experiences are limited to places like Katakura-kan near Lake Suwa. While preserving cultural heritage comes with challenges due to strict regulations, Ohana’s accommodation building has been beautifully renovated into a modern yet stylish space. Amenities provided are eco-friendly and close to nature. Ohana offers guided tours for guests who wish to explore its premises along with access to an attached museum showcasing Tachibana family artifacts. During our tour after dinner, we walked through hallways adorned with gold-leafed helmets leading us into a grand hall overlooking Matsutouen Garden under soft lighting—a sight so stunning that even my wife (not usually interested in history) was deeply moved! Breakfast can also be enjoyed while gazing at Matsutouen from another building’s dining area—an equally delightful experience. The room we stayed in was clean and featured modern comforts like a wooden tub bath, shower toilet facilities, complimentary drinks from an all-inclusive minibar fridge, and coffee from the lounge that could be taken back into our room. Dinner was served in what used to be rooms for princesses of the Tachibana family—an intimate setting where local ingredients were prepared into perfectly portioned dishes. The steamed eel dish (Seiro-mushi) from Yanagawa stood out; unlike Nagoya’s Hitsumabushi style eel rice bowl, this version kept every grain warm under its flavorful sauce—a unique taste indeed! I also loved their special Kyushu-style sweet soy sauce paired with seaweed from Ariake Sea so much that I bought some as souvenirs. Running any business across generations is no easy feat; staying here made me hope this remarkable accommodation continues its legacy far into future years!

    An amazing experience!

    The renovated room (Orange) impressed us with its perfectly designed layout that felt spacious. The view from the large window was stunning! We also enjoyed participating in the fascinating cultural heritage tour. We stayed for two nights, and both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious. The hospitality of the staff was exceptional, allowing us to fully enjoy a unique experience at this accommodation. Highly recommended to others!

    Timeless Tradition

    I had the opportunity to visit Fukuoka and stayed for one night at Ohana in Yanagawa, a place I had always wanted to visit. The garden was expansive, well-maintained, and beautiful. Both dinner and breakfast featured local ingredients, including seafood from the Ariake Sea, which was especially delicious. The garden illuminated at night was magical and truly enchanting. It was a wonderful experience filled with history, allowing me to enjoy a relaxing vacation. Thank you very much!

    An unforgettable day, it felt like a dream.

    I have never been so moved by an accommodation before. The refined elegance cultivated over the years seemed to envelop the entire accommodation. Everything was clean, everything was comfortable, and in such a space, I enjoyed delicious and beautifully presented cuisine. Finally, I relaxed while admiring a stunning garden reminiscent of Japanese paintings and returned to my room feeling the lingering charm. The breakfast the next morning was also carefully prepared and delicious. Even though I usually don't eat much in the morning, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were all incredibly kind, which I believe contributes to the warm atmosphere of this accommodation. There is so much more to say, but from the bottom of my heart, I wish for this wonderful and gentle accommodation to continue for 100 or even 200 years into the future.

    Another wonderful stay!!

    Although familiar with the interior from previous visits, I was once again soothed by the serene and tasteful atmosphere. Enjoying luxurious moments of doing nothing while gazing at the beautiful garden, savoring delicious cuisine in a private room that once served as the residence of an earl and his family—these experiences allowed me to fully appreciate both elegance and a sense of exclusivity. During my stay, there happened to be an event showcasing lanterns painted with "mysterious night creatures." The event was open to non-guests as well, attracting visitors of all ages and creating a lively atmosphere. It was heartwarming to see everyone enjoying themselves so much. While the event venue was bustling, it seemed well-managed; there was no noise disturbance in the accommodation area at all—a testament to their excellence. As always, I felt that the staff take great pride in their work. Moreover, it seems they operate not only for this accommodation but also with consideration for enriching Yanagawa as a whole. Visiting Ohana leaves not just an impression of being a wonderful accommodation but also evokes deep emotions. You can feel how generations past have fostered mutual respect between local rulers who loved their land and people who admired them—a truly enviable relationship. As long as this spirit of mutual care continues, I believe Yanagawa will still have its beautiful "Ohana" 100 or even 200 years from now.

    It was a wonderful time.

    The cultural heritage tour was excellent. We chose the Standard Twin Room, and the table in the center of the room was very convenient. The meals were also delicious. Additionally, the staff's attentiveness and hospitality were outstanding. We will visit again!

    First Visit

    I saw it in a magazine and fell in love at first sight, so I canceled the Reservation for another Accommodation to visit here. It felt like time-traveling back to the days of the Tachibana clan, truly experiencing the feeling of being a lord. I was deeply moved when the president personally came to greet us. The staff were genuinely pleasant, making our stay very comfortable. Although it was not an Onsen, the spacious layout, carefully selected furnishings, minimalist interior design without unnecessary items made it even more relaxing than being at home—a truly wonderful trip. It felt like touching something that has been cherished and passed down through generations, leaving me highly satisfied. This has become an Accommodation I definitely want to revisit again someday.     We stayed for two ni...

    We stayed for two nights as a family of four at the beginning of July. It was a temporary return from the U.S., and not only the adults but also our elementary school-aged children enjoyed it. The delicious Japanese breakfast, relaxing time in what felt like a private large hall, the beautiful garden, and the Room's cypress bath all made us feel Japan's unique hospitality everywhere, leaving us completely satisfied. The chilled Yanagawa milk was also excellent! Thank you very much!

    Thank you very much for your hospitality. The service was excellent, and I truly felt the kindness of all the staff. The meals, made with local ingredients, were incredibly delicious. Breakfast, in particular, was impeccable and absolutely outstanding. The renovated room was not only beautiful but also carried the pleasant scent of tatami mats. The furnishings throughout the accommodation were exquisite, and the serene garden was exceptionally beautiful—a perfect blend of timeless history and comfort. The only minor downside was that the room's entrance door opened inward, making it slightly inconvenient to take off or put on shoes. Other than that, this is by far the best accommodation I have ever stayed at. Thank you again for everything!

Dining while enjoying the view of the garden was also a peaceful experience. In the morning, I met with Mr. Tachibana, the 17th generation head, and took a commemorative photo!     Flowers of the Rainy Season

    During my previous visit, I couldn't explore thoroughly, so hearing about the renewal, I revisited after more than 10 years. This time, I enjoyed a river cruise and received tickets for the museum tour and exhibition hall, making the experience truly fulfilling. In the "Tsuru" Room, there were books by Fumiko-san and Kazuo-san that allowed me to learn more in detail. The rain actually made it perfect for reading. After meals, I took a drink from the lounge to the grand hall and spent a relaxing holiday admiring the garden at leisure. The staff's hospitality was excellent as well. I'll visit again in another season. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious—I ended up eating too much!

    Feel like a lord in an extraordinary setting.

    The rooms have been renovated and the facilities were clean. The view of the garden from the room was beautiful, and amenities and meals reflected local charm, making them enjoyable. Above all, the in-house tour organized by the accommodation was very interesting. The unique experience of enjoying Japanese sake on a veranda while viewing a beautifully lit-up Japanese garden at night, exclusively for guests in the grand hall, was truly special. I look forward to visiting again!

    Finally, I was able to stay here.

    This is a Ryokan I have long admired, inspired by Muneshige Tachibana and Ginchiyo-sama. This was my first stay after its renovation. The preservation of the old mansion's charm exceeded my expectations, and exploring the beautiful buildings was truly wonderful. The accommodation's guided tour is a must-see: - The beauty of Meiji-era Japanese-Western architecture, with an impressive display of helmets lined up on the lintels. It offers unique variations and enjoyment not found in other cultural properties. - The Western-style building's decorations also showcased a samurai-like strength, which was fascinating. - In the open grand hall, you can enjoy the garden views from evening to midnight and even in the morning. One suggestion for improvement would be extending the reception hours for phone inquiries at the lobby; currently, knowledgeable staff are only available from 10:00 to 16:00, which feels too short. However, all staff members exuded a warm simplicity that seemed characteristic of this region. - Upon entering the accommodation, I noticed that the lobby was dimly lit with no one present. While having someone stationed there might be better during check-in times, at night it transformed into a stylish drink bar that was both practical and comfortable. Recommendations include: - Reserving a private room at Shukeitei for breakfast or dinner to enjoy meals while gazing at gardens from rooms once used by former lords. - Experiencing breakfast on a boat or taking part in Yanagawa river cruising starting from Ohana’s gate—both were charming and memorable experiences arranged through recommended vendors introduced by Ohana staff. Both boatmen and coordinators were professional and made it enjoyable. - Guests receive tickets to visit Tachibana Family Archives upon arrival. At Yanagawa Domain Lord Tachibana Residence Ohana: Above all else, I will never forget spending pleasant moments in their grand hall—a spacious area with breathtaking views that cannot be fully captured even in photos. It allowed me to savor tranquil moments leisurely. If I have another opportunity to visit Yanagawa again someday, I would love to stay here once more! Thank you very much!

    Cultural Heritage Accommodation

    On the day of our stay, due to unseasonal heat and a series of minor mishaps, we arrived at the accommodation much earlier than the check-in time, feeling completely exhausted. I called the front desk to ask if we could at least park our car, and they kindly accommodated us. After being guided to a spacious parking area for guests on their vast property, we were welcomed into an air-conditioned lobby where they provided drinks and explained various details. Unfortunately, we were too tired to join the cultural heritage tour before dinner. However, as a privilege for staying guests perhaps, after dinner we were free to explore areas such as the nightingale-floored corridor overlooking a pond lush with sago palms (accompanied by loud bullfrog calls), a grand hall facing this pond, and rooms adorned with hanging hina dolls. Dinner was something I had been looking forward to—it was served in a first-floor restaurant featuring seasonal ingredients like pumpkin, asparagus, blue crab, clams, shrimp as well as unique local delicacies unfamiliar even to someone from Kanto like me: Etsu fish and Wake greens. The explanations provided made it all very enjoyable. Paired with these dishes was local Chikugo barley shochu [Tsukushi]. Following that came grilled eel without sauce; duck breast with lemon jelly over Shimabara somen noodles; meat dishes paired with local sake lees (!) shochu [Shigemasu]; Yanagawa pork braised in Earl Grey tea; and Wagyu filet steak. Among all these delights though stood out dessert—a loquat compote so memorable that since returning home I've been trying hard (with honey & lemon) to recreate its flavor. The next morning brought another heartwarming experience—though my misunderstanding seemed inadvertently burdensome for both kitchen staff & breakfast servers alike—they went out of their way running lightly down hallways just so they could inform me when freshly cooked rice was ready while I waited leisurely sipping coffee at lounge seating nearby! Their kindness left such warmth lingering within me still today beyond words alone suffice expressing gratitude towards them altogether here now again sincerely once more truly indeed overall ultimately finally lastly thank you deeply dearly greatly immensely infinitely eternally forevermore always everlastingly perpetually timelessly endlessly ceaselessly boundlessly limitlessly     It was raining on the day we arrived, and although we arrived a bit earlier than planned, you welcomed us warmly. Thank you so much. We were deeply moved by the city's efforts to preserve Yanagawa's waterways. Despite not being able to enjoy the Yanagawa river cruise due to rain the previous day, you quickly arranged a short course for us within our time before check-out, creating wonderful memories. The room had just been renovated and felt very clean, and the hospitality of your staff was truly exceptional. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again someday.

    This was my second s...

    This was my second stay, and it was just as satisfying as the first. Both the public spaces and guest rooms are spaciously designed, and gazing at the garden through the window made time feel like it flowed more slowly. The meals feature delicious ingredients from Ariake Sea and Chikugo region in abundance. The dinner included a beautiful kaiseki course followed by perfectly portioned steamed eel rice, which was exceptional. The Ariake seaweed served at breakfast was also incredibly delicious. This is a wonderful accommodation that cherishes the history of noble families and exudes deep local pride. I believe its legacy will continue for 100 years or more into the future.

    The accommodation started by Princess Tachibana was a place where you could feel the history!

    I recently stayed at this accommodation for the first time. Although I had planned to visit during the New Year, I had to cancel last minute due to illness, so this was my "revenge" trip. The accommodation featured a historic building and a newly constructed lodging wing, just as I had seen on TV before, and it was very comfortable. I chose the most affordable room, which was compact but cozy; however, the bathroom and the entrance area where you take off your shoes felt a bit cramped. When trying to step out with my bag, my shoes got caught and made it difficult to open the door smoothly. Next time, I'll opt for a slightly higher-grade room. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious overall; however, I'm not fond of sweet flavors in dishes like eel rice sauce or miso soup. Still, this is an accommodation that makes me want to stay again when visiting near Yanagawa!

    A hotel located within historical buildings and gardens. There are guided tours of the traditional restaurant, Western-style mansion, and grand hall. Afterward, you can freely enjoy drinks such as alcohol, coffee, and other beverages along with snacks in these historical settings—all offered as a complimentary service for an unparalleled relaxing experience.     We stayed here to celebrate a 70th birthday. In the elegant and serene atmosphere, the thoughtful care of the staff allowed us to have a truly memorable time.     A solo journey to Yanagawa for my 70th birthday. I stayed in a historic accommodation and enjoyed a leisurely dinner and breakfast.
