Not suitable for enjoying the Onsen.

There is no washing area in the Room bath; there is only a shower located past the corridor by the washbasin, and when someone uses the shower, neither the toilet nor the washbasin can be used. The Room is spacious, but there is a lot of wasted space. There is a private bath, but since it is used one person at a time, it is rarely available and you have to wait outside until it opens up. The Room we stayed in was far from both the bath and the dining area, making it difficult to get around. I wanted to relax in the Onsen, but it was disappointing. It’s not worth the price.

    Simply wonderful!

The Room, baths, and meals were all wonderful. Both the in-room bath and the private Kashinoki-no-Yu Onsen were excellent. When I mentioned that the handle on the bath basket had come off, they responded immediately. As for the food, when I told them I have gout and can’t eat pork, they adjusted part of the meal. Every dish was delicious, and you could really tell how carefully everything was prepared. The soba was also great. All of the staff we spoke with in various situations were very pleasant, and it truly became a memorable trip. The view from the Room was amazing as well. There was a light mist over the mountains, and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It rained at night, but that actually made it even more relaxing with the sound of rain—I didn’t feel disappointed at all even though it rained. The American who traveled with me was impressed by everything and happily said they will definitely come again! I rarely write a Review no matter how much I travel, but Tsuruya was truly outstanding. If you’re considering a trip to Gunma, this is an Accommodation I would highly recommend—so I decided to write this Review. Next time, I’d love to enjoy the winter scenery along with the Onsen and meals. We will definitely visit again! Thank you very much.

    This is a wonderful accommodation!

I traveled with my elderly mother. The “Forest” Room was located very close to the front desk, making it easy for her to get around and very comfortable. The Room was so spacious that my mother even complained, “I’ll forget where I put everything,” but the changing area and bath were also roomy, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Because it truly feels like being in the middle of a forest, we could open the windows morning and evening (there were sturdy screens, so no insects came in) and spend time without air conditioning. Also, my mother—who says her feet feel cold even in summer—was delighted to have floor heating. When I asked if we could have milk for the coffee in the Room instead of creamer pods, they kindly went out of their way to bring a large container from their sister property. I was truly impressed! The meals were carefully prepared with elaborate dishes, and everything—from local vegetables to meat—was delicious. The portions were just right. For my mother, the rice seemed a bit firm, but I assume that is part of the head chef’s preference; I enjoyed it very much. In Gunma Prefecture, where it can be hard to find an Accommodation with few stairs for an elderly guest to stay comfortably, we found a real gem! We would love to visit again.

We were very satisfied with the spacious Room!

The open-air bath was wonderful, of course, but above all, the Room was so spacious and comfortable! Everyone at the Ryokan was very kind and attentive, and I would definitely like to visit again.

    Traveling with Elderly Parents

I stayed here with my elderly parents. The meals highlighted seasonal flavors, and each dish showed thoughtful preparation. Everything was delicious. The rice in particular was excellent, and our whole family was satisfied. The dining experience exceeded our expectations and truly reflected the four seasons. On the other hand, we had concerns about the Facility and cleanliness. The Room we stayed in had a semi-open-air bath and a separate shower room, but there was no washing area by the semi-open-air bath itself, which made bathing somewhat inconvenient. The Room design also felt less calming than expected, and it did not seem like a relaxing space for my elderly parents. In addition, we decided not to use the private bath that was recommended to us because it also had no washing area, and there were leaves or debris floating in the tub. We also noticed musty odors in some areas of the building, and we were concerned about dirt on the bidet toilet seat in our Room. We feel there is room for improvement in cleaning and Facility maintenance. Because we were so satisfied with the meals, it was disappointing to feel such a gap with the other aspects such as Facilities and cleanliness. Considering the Accommodation Fee, overall it did not meet our expectations as much as we had hoped, so our evaluation of value for money is strict.

I’d like a Multiple Night Stay.

Thank you for taking care of us on our family trip. We weren’t sure which Room to choose for four people, so we contacted the Accommodation directly. Since we were traveling with parents in their 70s, they recommended the “Mori” Room, which doesn’t require using stairs. The Room was spacious, the terrace was lovely, and there were two sinks. The open-air bath in the Room was also large—so roomy that my mother and I could relax comfortably together. We had a very comfortable stay. One small concern was the drainage flow, but overall we were extremely satisfied! The meals were just the right amount for us, beautifully presented, and everything was delicious. Perhaps because there are only a few Rooms, we were able to use the private open-air bath without overlapping with other guests. The lounge was wonderful as well, and it made us want to come back for a Multiple Night Stay to enjoy more of the Accommodation. There were books in both the Room and the lounge, and spending time reading at a relaxed pace felt truly luxurious. Since the smoking area is next to reception, “Mori” is especially convenient for smokers due to its easy access. We were told we could tour vacant Rooms, so we had a look at some others too. Each had a different layout and atmosphere, and every Room was appealing in its own way. All of the staff were very pleasant, and we had such a comfortable time! This has become one of our Accommodations that we’d love to visit again. This time I couldn’t use them because I had been drinking alcohol, but next time I’d like to fully enjoy the sauna and stone spa as well. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time!!

We were extremely satisfied with our stay.

We stayed for a Multiple Night Stay of two nights. The room was spacious—almost too spacious—and yet it was thoroughly cleaned, so we were able to relax in comfort. All rooms come with a semi-open-air Onsen bath, which was also large and spotless, making for a very pleasant soak. On the middle day, we also used the private bath called “Shikanoki no Yu,” as featured in the Accommodation’s name, and it was a wonderfully atmospheric Onsen. After our 2-night, 3-day stay, we may have ended up a bit tired from soaking so much. The amenities were well stocked, and the staff were kind and courteous—we were very satisfied. The meals were made with excellent ingredients and carefully prepared; everything was delicious. However, dinner offered so many dishes and such generous portions that we couldn’t finish everything on either night. Overall, it was an extremely satisfying stay.

    What a great bath!

The final uphill road to the Hotel is a bit narrow! We came in a small car so we made it up, but it was tight and a little nerve-racking. It would have been nice if drinks and ice cream were included (all-inclusive), or if there were a minibar in the Room. There was a self-serve “minibar” in the lounge, but the selection was limited, which was disappointing. It would also be great if at least ice cream were available as a complimentary lounge service. I also hope the food can be improved a bit more.

    Comfortable

Located deep in Shima Onsen, but we arrived without any issues since we traveled by car. We stayed in the “Hana” Room with a semi-open-air bath. The Room was spacious and spotless, and we were able to relax. Having meals served in the Room and enjoying the quiet, calming bath with a lovely kiri-wood fragrance made for an excellent soak. Due to the unfortunate weather, we checked in early, and both the meals and baths exceeded our expectations. It was also great that we could watch Netflix and Amazon Prime. Since it was a quiet weekday, we were able to use the private bath smoothly as well. It’s hard to put into words, but I really loved the natural hot spring water from the source. All of the staff were kind, which made our stay very relaxing.

Your First Visit to Shima Onsen

This was my first time visiting Shima Onsen. I chose Tsuruya as a cozy, stay-in style ryokan so we could still enjoy ourselves even if the weather was bad. Thank you very much to the attendant who took care of us—formerly a high school baseball player. I mostly watch these days, but I love baseball, so our conversations were lively and a lot of fun. We also appreciated the helpful sightseeing tips about Shima Onsen. Both the open-air bath in our Room and the private open-air bath were outstanding in water quality, atmosphere, and size. Thanks to that (maybe?), even my shoe blisters improved. The meals were also excellent—handmade soba, Akagi Wagyu cutlet, and Spanish mackerel takikomi rice were all superb. It may be rude to say “surprisingly,” but even the sashimi was exceptionally good. When I mentioned how much I enjoyed it, our attendant recommended a local sushi restaurant; we actually went there and it was delicious and reasonably priced. Choosing Tsuruya for my first 2-night/3-day trip to Shima Onsen was absolutely the right decision. Next time, I’d like to consider staying in a different Room as well.

I relaxed and enjoyed my own private open-air bath.

As I was staying with my elderly mother, safety—especially on stairs and underfoot—was our top priority. Being able to enjoy both the indoor bath and the open-air bath at any time was very helpful. The greenery and its scent from the trees were soothing for both body and mind. The meal portions were just right for us, and we especially enjoyed the Spanish mackerel takikomi rice. I would be happy if the lounge hours were a bit longer. All of the female staff were friendly with warm smiles, which made us feel at ease, but we found that some of the international staff spoke Japanese too quickly to understand clearly. There are many books in the lounge after bathing, including nostalgic picture books and children’s books that make you want to pick them up and read. It was a pity that the lighting was a little dim and hard to see. This is an ideal Hotel for spending a relaxing time in a calm setting. I would like to visit again.

Both the private bath and the in-room bath were great. The hot water was excellent as well. The Room was clean, and the staff were kind. I thought the meal menu could use a bit more creativity. Dinner started at 6:00 p.m., but we only had about an hour, and the next dishes came too quickly, so it was disappointing that we couldn’t enjoy the meal at a relaxed pace. I think it would be better to have at least about an hour and a half. I also think the Room bath towels could be a bit fluffier. If these points are improved, I think this would become one of the Accommodations I’d like to visit again.

    It was very good.

Both the Room and the in-room bath were wonderful. I was worried about insects after reading some Reviews, but we only found one stink bug on the curtain (maybe due to the season). There was also a box of insect-control supplies provided. The Room itself was lovely, and above all, the free-flowing hot spring water in the in-room bath felt amazing. The private “Shikanosoki-no-Yu” Onsen was also excellent—both the view and the Onsen were great. The in-room bath was a bit cooler than Shikanosoki-no-Yu, but that allowed us to soak longer and relax. We enjoyed delicious seasonal dishes, though some items seemed a bit too adult for our middle-school daughter. All of the staff were very pleasant as well. Just one thing… perhaps because the air conditioner’s filter-cleaning indicator was on, it made a very loud noise once. It stopped right away and kept running, but… It might be better to include this in the pre-arrival inspection checklist before guests enter. Overall, all three of us were very satisfied. Next time, if we can stay two nights, we could enjoy both the Room and the in-room bath even more—we’d love to come back. Thank you very much.

    This is my first stay.

We stayed in the third-floor Room “Tsuki.” There is no elevator, so depending on your age or physical condition, the stairs may feel a bit challenging. The Room was spacious and comfortable—the indoor area, the semi-open-air bath, and the terrace. The meals were delicious and a good portion size (though it might feel a little small for younger guests). The parking area is dirt/gravel, so it can get a bit muddy on rainy days (it happened to be raining during our stay). It feels more suited to autumn foliage viewing than cherry blossom viewing. Overall, we think it’s an excellent Accommodation. Highly recommended.

    That’s disappointing.

This was my third stay, and I was extremely disappointed. (1) Even after check-in, the bath in the Room had not been filled with hot water. The hot water only trickled out, so it took a long time before I could use it. Overall, it felt like the amount of hot water had been reduced as well. (2) During the meal, they brought a pitcher of water with ice. After the meal, when I asked for a new pitcher with ice, I was told, “You can get water by turning on the tap.” (3) The quality of the food has dropped significantly—especially the meat: very thin slices in small portions and tough cuts with sinew. At a per-guest price of 50,000 yen, this is unacceptable. Also, the fish served at dinner was served again at breakfast—the same fish. Unbelievable. I understand that since you expanded the Accommodation you are cutting costs considerably, but we visit to experience something “out of the ordinary,” and taking it this far honestly put me off. It also seemed they were not aware that this was my third stay at all; I felt there was no proper guest information management or handover whatsoever.

The hot spring quality was excellent, but there were too many insects to relax.

I have visited Shima Onsen many times, but this was my first stay at this Ryokan. Below are some points I noticed that may be helpful for both future guests and the Ryokan staff. <Hospitality> ■ Upon Arrival - A foreign staff member greeted us, but they remained silent even when I mentioned my name, possibly due to a lack of understanding of Japanese. - During check-in, the explanation was given in broken Japanese and was difficult to understand; there was no response even when asked for clarification. It felt too early to assign non-Japanese-speaking staff to guest-facing roles. - As a Diamond Member gift, I was offered only Yamazaki on the rocks or highball. When I mentioned that I don’t drink alcohol, the response ended with just "Oh, is that so." Unlike other Ryokans where alternative options are provided, there seemed to be no effort made here—possibly due to it being handled by foreign staff. ■ Room Guidance Service - There were no detailed explanations about room facilities or meals; the staff simply left after placing our luggage in the room. - No guidance on where things were located or even where the room key could be found. - Later during dinner, we learned about meal upgrade options—it would have been helpful if this had been explained during room guidance. ■ Dinner and Breakfast Service - Dinner service was handled by Japanese staff but felt like mere food delivery with minimal explanation about dishes. - Overall service lacked recommendations or additional information beyond what was served—a very plain experience. - Breakfast service involved foreign staff again; as expected, explanations about dishes were not comprehensible. <The Room> - The refrigerator contained no drinks at all. With no nearby stores available, purchasing beverages from vending machines within the Ryokan became necessary. - While clean and spacious at first glance making it seem comfortable overall—there were numerous insects present around windows and in areas like dressing rooms (e.g., stink bugs/ladybugs/unknown species). Without insect repellents provided anywhere inside removing them manually using tissues became unavoidable. <Bath (Indoor Bath & Open-Air Bath)> - Gaps under doors between indoor baths/open-air baths allowed insects such as stink bugs/ladybugs from outside into these spaces frequently. - The open-air bath area had an overwhelming number of insects including stink bugs/bees/horseflies/moths making it nearly impossible-to-use comfortably despite being surrounded by nature which naturally attracts more bugs—it would help if measures preventing entry into rooms/dressing areas could improve significantly! <Meals> - Both dinner & breakfast portions appeared small while flavors leaned towards mildness—not particularly impressive nor disappointing either way overall dining experience felt average

    The experience was terrible.

We arrived at the Ryokan around 4 PM, but no one was at the entrance to greet us. Upon entering, the front desk was also unattended, and it was our first time experiencing a Ryokan with no staff present. After a while, someone from the Ryokan appeared, but they were a foreign staff member. They explained about the Facility and other details; however, due to their limited Japanese proficiency, it was often difficult to understand what they were saying. We tried our best to listen carefully out of respect but found communication challenging. Additionally, when asked "Shall I carry your luggage? What would you like?" we felt slightly irritated as it is customary for staff to carry luggage without asking. We responded with "No thank you; I'll carry it myself." The worst part of our stay began when we entered the Room and noticed an ammonia-like smell. Although some items were tidied up in an attempt to address this issue, the cause remained unknown. The smell persisted throughout and became unbearable by midnight—so strong that we couldn't even keep our eyes open or breathe properly in the Room. Eventually, it turned out that a broken refrigerator was causing this odor. Once removed from the Room by staff members later on, the smell subsided; however unfortunately sleeping peacefully wasn’t possible anymore leading towards having spent one terrible night altogether! While understanding higher pricing due mainly because private Onsen attached within Rooms themselves - still disappointing seeing fewer dishes served during meals alongside smaller portions overall too! Ultimately leaving behind unpleasant memories regarding Shima Onsen trip experience altogether!

    It was a bit disappointing.

I stayed again for the first time in four months. This Room is truly comfortable, and it’s one of my favorites. Tsuruya has always been one of my most important Ryokan because the meals are delicious and served in the Room. I always keep the menu. However, I was surprised by this time’s meals. I felt that there were definitely fewer items and that the quality had declined. It was to the point where I wondered if the head chef had changed. I stay at various Ryokan every month, but this was my first time not being served sashimi. Not that I go just to eat sashimi, but still... The additional meat dish was delicious. The final amberjack takikomi rice was also very good. As for breakfast, it only felt satisfying after ordering additional dishes. My companion did get seconds of rice, though... The breakfast salmon? had no flavor, and the other side dishes were also so lightly seasoned that they didn’t really work as side dishes. I was honestly surprised—what happened with the food? I understand that meal contents may vary depending on the season. Because we have been visiting regularly for a long time, that may be why I felt this way—but that’s exactly why I found it a bit disappointing this time. I know rising prices make things difficult. However, it is also true that Accommodation Fee has increased. While dinner may be acceptable, this stay made me feel you should take another look at what is offered for breakfast. That said, it remains one of my favorite Ryokan all the same.

A Long-Awaited Visit to Shima Onsen

Although it was unfortunately rainy, we enjoyed a wonderful time of family togetherness. The Onsen was highly satisfying, and the meals were served in just the right portions, making them suitable for elderly guests. The morning view of the rainy mountains was truly relaxing for both body and mind.

First-time stay. The Room was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. Regarding meals, I informed them in advance about having a "mild allergy," and they provided a perfectly accommodating menu, which was highly satisfying and much appreciated. However, one issue was that there was no hot water, which left me feeling very cold. Fortunately, after contacting them, they promptly resolved the issue.

    Hidden Gem Onsen: Shima Onsen

The room was new, clean, and part of an excellent Onsen accommodation. It was a room with an open-air bath, and I believe it had the largest in-room bath I've ever experienced during my stays. You can stretch your legs and relax comfortably. There were also many private baths available, but the in-room bath alone was more than satisfying. The meals were delicious with perfect portions and quality—absolutely flawless. The local beer and sake were also very tasty. One unique feature of this accommodation is that there is a temple within its premises where you can purchase Goshuin (temple stamps) and charms—a rare offering not commonly found elsewhere. My impression is that Shima Onsen itself deserves to be more widely known for its charm. Additionally, the Shima River Dam located slightly above the accommodation offers breathtaking views—it’s truly impressive! If given another opportunity, I would love to revisit during autumn to fully enjoy the deep chill of the season. If I may suggest one improvement: having a small TV on the bedside would make it even more satisfying!

I booked the accommodation after liking the room photos, but I felt the meals were lacking effort. The menu mentioned a sashimi platter with three types, but it turned out to be three small pieces of sashimi that I had to pick up myself from a buffet. They seem to specialize in soba noodles, but they were not tasty at all! Overall, I would not recommend expecting much from the meals. Before entering the onsen, I washed my body in the shower room, but the drainage was clogged and water only drained very slowly. When opening the shower room door, dirty water flowed into the open-air bath area. The ryokan staff seemed aware of this drainage issue and mentioned that other rooms also had similar problems despite multiple repairs without improvement. I feel they should completely fix these issues before accepting accommodation reservations. Everything was disappointing.

Relaxing hot spring therapy was excellent.

While not flashy, this Ryokan was exceptional in every aspect, from the facilities to the service and cuisine. The concept of "New Healing" truly resonates here—the rooms are clean and spacious, private facilities include open-air baths, indoor baths, and stone saunas, all well-equipped. The lounge is filled with books for a relaxing time. This accommodation is perfect for a slow-paced and peaceful stay. Personally, I was highly satisfied with the private sauna. Although the outdoor relaxation space is compact, the facility itself is well-maintained. At night, I enjoyed cold water baths and outdoor air bathing under a full moon—an unforgettable experience. The meals were not overly elaborate but featured excellent flavors and high-quality ingredients in satisfying portions. (By the way, the additional dishes were exceptionally delicious.) It was an ideal solo trip where I could quietly unwind and relieve stress to my heart's content. I would love to return again!

    Good Accommodation

This accommodation is located in a peaceful and serene area, where the only sounds are the river and birdsong. The tranquil atmosphere is incredibly soothing, making it an ideal environment for relaxation. The onsen with its natural hot spring water was so comfortable that I found myself soaking in it multiple times. With fewer rooms available, the accommodation maintains a quiet ambiance (those seeking liveliness likely wouldn't choose this place), allowing for complete rest. The top-floor room was exceptionally comfortable, from its layout to the private onsen bath design. Even on rainy days, you can enjoy a different kind of charm compared to sunny days, so weather doesn't seem to matter much here. Next time, I hope to visit when there's snow. The meals were delightful; we opted for the standard kaiseki course but added extra dishes like wagyu tataki and beef stew—both were excellent! Especially the Japanese-style beef stew—it’s highly recommended. For those with bigger appetites, adding extra dishes might be a good idea as the kaiseki alone may not be enough. The individual shabu-shabu hot pot included in the course was also delicious and gave an overall impression of healthy cuisine. Additionally, their handmade soba noodles were truly delicious—I wouldn’t mind if they served larger portions! Regarding service, there were moments where it seemed affected by staffing shortages common across many industries these days. However, staff members—including foreign staff fluent in Japanese—were very pleasant throughout our stay from check-in to check-out. That said, those expecting meticulous service akin to high-end luxury ryokans might find this place slightly lacking in that regard. Considering its location and challenges in hiring highly skilled staff like traditional nakai-san attendants here would be understandable upon visiting—and personally speaking—I wouldn’t want accommodation costs to increase further either. Lastly, Shima River Dam with its stunning "Shima Blue" waters is very close by; surrounded by mountains and paired with this onsen accommodation made for an unforgettable experience. I look forward to visiting again during snowy weather!

Thank you for your hospitality. From the moment we arrived at the accommodation, we received attentive service, and the meals were packed with plenty of vegetables—absolutely perfect. About Cuisine and Hospitality

    1. The dinner was perfect for me in both flavor and portion, absolutely excellent. The simmered dishes and the soba noodles served as a palate cleanser were truly delicious, with the soba's aroma and the dashi seasoning standing out beautifully. 2. Regarding customer service, the Japanese staff provided attentive care down to every detail during conversations. While many foreign staff members were working, understanding that Japanese can be challenging for them, a bit more attentiveness and consideration would enhance the experience further.

    Solo Travel

A rare and valuable accommodation for solo travelers. After losing my wife two months ago, I decided to take a solo trip once I felt settled. It was raining upon arrival, but the staff kindly came out with an umbrella to greet me at the parking lot. The disappointing part was the Hassun dish in the meal—it consisted only of vegetable bagna cauda. While the sauce was delicious, I believe Hassun is meant to heighten expectations for the upcoming dishes and showcase the chef's skills. It felt somewhat lacking in effort. On the other hand, I found elements like the soba broth to be of high quality, which made it all feel like a missed opportunity. The salt-grilled ayu fish was plump and delicious. The hospitality was excellent, so I look forward to visiting again with higher expectations next time!

Surprise! The bathtub is not filled with water.

Recently, I have been choosing accommodations with private open-air baths in the room. As an onsen enthusiast, having a bath in the room allows me to enjoy it anytime, and I usually bathe 7-8 times during a one-night stay. The "Tsuru" room features a spacious stone bath with both an indoor and open-air bath, both offering luxurious natural hot spring water flow. However, when I entered the room excited to use the baths, neither of them had water filled. After informing the staff who brought drinks to our room, water started flowing but only at the rate typical for natural hot spring flow—far too slow to fill up quickly. It took nearly four hours for the baths to fill completely and was finally ready around 9 PM. My wife has an unusual way of selecting accommodations—she bases her choice on how well-stocked the mini-fridge is in each room and always takes photos for comparison with other places we've stayed at. Surprisingly, this accommodation's fridge was empty—a first for us at a place offering rooms with private open-air baths. Additionally, this was also our first experience where there wasn’t any water initially in the bath. The room itself was spacious and comfortable; both the large indoor bath and open-air bath were quiet and offered excellent natural hot springs directly flowing into them. It’s truly a wonderful accommodation overall but these issues left us feeling disappointed despite its potential charm.

The snow has melted, so... (smile)

I love this Ryokan, and I was eagerly waiting for the snow to melt after visiting during the snowy season and causing some inconvenience. As expected, Tsuruya Ryokan is truly wonderful. It provides a calm and relaxing environment, especially suitable for elderly guests. The dinner was absolutely perfect, featuring local and seasonal ingredients. Everything was delicious! Although my husband and I are not fans of butterbur, we found the butterbur porridge appetizer surprisingly tasty. It's amazing how Tsuruya can make even disliked ingredients enjoyable—surely thanks to the chef's exceptional skills! While Onsen is a highlight of any trip, meals are definitely the main attraction (especially for women!). The food was incredibly delicious. The rolled omelet with dashi broth was particularly outstanding—it was truly unforgettable! This trip brought us so much joy. The soba noodles and all other dishes were absolutely satisfying as well. I look forward to visiting again soon—thank you so much for everything! I'll be back to enjoy your delicious soba noodles and dashi-rolled omelet again!
