Wonderful
It was a quiet Onsen Accommodation that suited the town of Hida-Furukawa perfectly. Everything was wonderful, and it’s rare that I’ve been able to spend time so comfortably. What was it, exactly? Everything! The only disappointment was that I could hear footsteps from the Room on the third floor until late at night. Next time I stay, I plan to request a higher floor. It’s an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at again next year.

A long-established Accommodation featuring a tokonoma alcove with warrior paintings and blue tatami mats.
This is a Japanese-style suite reached by stairs. As you enter, folk-art furniture sits on the wooden-floored entry area; open the vermilion-lacquered double-sided kumiko shoji framed by carefully crafted natural-wood pillars and rails, and you step into a tatami Room scented with fresh rush. Seasonal hanging scrolls and flowers, and a large low table complete the setting. From the wide north-facing window, you can see the river surface and the temple’s great roof. By the window are a box hibachi used as a table and a small rocking chair. At the back of the south-side wooden-floored area, it seems an extension has been added: a large, bright bath area (a thick, oversized hinoki cypress tub big enough for about four people to soak together, washing space, footbath, and washbasin). Through the glass door you can view mountain ridges; open it to step onto the veranda and feel the breeze. The water flows continuously 24/7 despite concerns about humidity affecting wooden construction. Everything is kept very clean and well maintained—an indulgent bathing experience. After finishing an excellent meal at a calm small dining room table facing the garden, we returned to find our futons laid out. A bed would be easier, but it would probably feel out of place in this Room. I adjusted the futon orientation to my preference. In addition to air conditioning there is also a gas fan heater, so it should stay warm even in winter. Renovation work seems to be progressing in stages, and I’m looking forward to seeing newly refurbished Rooms.

It reminded me of a classic European castle Hotel.
Just a 5-minute walk across Kasumi Bridge to the Hida-Furukawa streetscape that feels like a period-drama backdrop, this Accommodation is ideally located. As advised in advance, we parked on the one-way road in front and entered through the entrance sprinkled with water. Check-in was handled in a retro Western-style Room beside the entrance. We received an explanation of the timeworn building’s first-floor living area, lounge, and dining venue as we headed toward the guest-room elevator. We stayed for two nights in the spacious Japanese-Western Room with a scenic-view bath, “Tamayura.” The layout from the bathroom to the vending corner (with refrigerator and glassware neatly grouped together) was a practical straight-line design. On the wide veranda overlooking Honganji Temple’s great roof was a full-width closet with a full-length mirror, and there were plenty of hangers. However, because the safe was placed directly on the floor, we had to kneel down and peer into it each time we used it, which was quite tough. In addition to our in-Room hinoki bath, we enjoyed both a large public bath with an open-air section (including a seated bubble-bath corner) and another smaller bath at the end of a dim corridor leading toward what used to be the main entrance (small but with a reclining bath). In an exceptionally high-ceilinged relaxation area facing the small front garden beside the entrance, there were high-performance massage chairs that we used after dinner before returning to our Room and again after early-morning baths. At the lounge counter next to the shop there was a coffee machine, so we could enjoy fragrant coffee whenever we liked during our stay. The shop itself wasn’t very large, but it offered tastefully curated items, and they also arranged shipping smoothly for us. Dinner on day one fully lived up to expectations with an excellent menu showcasing local ingredients. We were surprised by Hida tiger pufferfish sashimi paired with wood ear mushrooms; an assortment featuring Hida beef tongue confit, pressed cherry trout sushi, and young sweetfish kinome dengaku; plus mini Hida beef steak served with thick bamboo-shoot slices and locally grown asparagus; along with fried tofu gluten and new burdock root in sweet broth—beautifully presented on lovely tableware. We enjoyed everything through dessert without ever getting bored. The next morning’s classic breakfast—hoba miso-yaki along with simmered taro and fish cake dumplings (shinjo), grilled fish, and steamed dishes—was also delicious. On day two dinner was served in a tea room: salad-style local stone tofu paired with “angel shrimp,” spring cabbage potage soup, tempura of mountain vegetables and white asparagus, among other dishes. The following morning’s hoba-yaki included eggplant as well as simmered butterbur shoots (fuki) and pumpkin. When heading out to Shijuhachi Falls wearing trekking shoes, it was very convenient to use the rear entrance that leads directly out to parking. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Wonderful—absolutely delightful and very satisfying.
Everyone was very courteous, and although it wasn’t an expensive Plan, it was truly a wonderful Accommodation. This was my second stay; last time was just after COVID, so I didn’t see any international guests, but this time there were many. It’s popular with international guests as well. Both dinner and breakfast were full of seasonal flavors and absolutely delicious. The dining area and baths were quiet, and I was able to relax and unwind.

This is my second stay.
We were happy to receive your suggestion for a cake to celebrate our child. Thanks to you, our family was able to spend a wonderful time together. The food was especially delicious this time, and we enjoyed it with our eyes as well. There were a few disappointing aspects of the service, but it is still a Ryokan where we would like to stay again. Next time we stay, we hope to look forward to an even better experience.

It’s worth visiting Hida-Furukawa just to stay at this Accommodation.
It’s worth traveling to Hida-Furukawa just to stay at this Accommodation. The building, constructed in the Meiji era, has been tastefully modernized while preserving its dignity and charm, making it a very comfortable place to spend time. The mountain-village cuisine—centered on Hida beef and river fish—is rustic yet refined, and feels like something you can only experience here. The staff’s hospitality is also excellent. The only drawback is that the entrance can be hard to find when walking from the station at night; I ended up standing helplessly in front of the old entrance, knocking with no response. When I tried to call, my phone showed a confusing “ENECHANGE EV charging station” label (apparently because there is an EV charging spot on-site), which added to the confusion. A brief note explaining this would be helpful.

Timeless charm beyond age
Although the building is old, it has been renovated, so we didn’t mind its age. More than any wear over time, the hospitality unique to a long-established inn—thoughtful service, delicious meals, and care shown throughout, including in the baths—stood out. Both dinner and breakfast were especially delicious. Since we visited in January, the menu had a New Year’s feel to it, so we’d love to return in a different season. We look forward to staying with you again.

It was excellent.
Everything was excellent. I felt the true essence of a long-established Ryokan. It seems to have undergone renovations, but they have managed to modernize it without losing its original charm. The furnishings, casually placed around, are irreplaceable treasures that exude history. The open-air bath was a luxurious experience, especially enjoying snow-viewing sake alone amidst the snow from the previous day. The food was impeccable, and I deeply appreciate the hospitality of the proprietress. Although it's a bit far from Osaka, I would love to visit again.

I'm a bit curious.
The toilet is too small. The temperature of the open-air bath was too hot to enter, and the flowing water was extremely hot.

Relax and unwind
For your stay during the Takayama sightseeing, we chose Furukawa and stayed at Yatsusankan. The charming building, delicious meals, warm hospitality, and the beautiful scenery of Furukawa were truly soothing. The sake in Furukawa is delightful, and we would love to visit again.

I will visit again.
We visited again this year with great anticipation. As always, we were warmly welcomed with exceptional hospitality. The highlight of Yatsusankan is undoubtedly the meals. The tableware was exquisite, and the dishes were a feast for both the palate and the eyes. Breakfast was so delicious that we couldn't help but indulge, leaving us completely satisfied. We look forward to visiting again next year!

Glad I trusted the reviews.
I was a bit worried if the satisfaction would match the price, but after seeing the high reviews in the Tokai region, I decided to stay for 2 nights, and it exceeded my expectations. All the staff had a spirit of hospitality, which made me feel very warm and welcomed. The meals were truly elaborate both in the morning and evening, with perfect portions and seasoning. I am so glad to have found such a wonderful accommodation. The private bath in our room was amazing as well. I've heard that Hida has great water quality, and it felt so good that I thought it might be onsen water—it allowed me to enjoy a long relaxing soak. I would love to visit again during another season. I also purchased cheese cookies and butter sandwiches from their affiliated confectionery shop online as souvenirs—they were absolutely delicious! Apologies for only taking photos of the meals... We stayed in a room called "Kuon."

A Ryokan You Would Want to Stay at Again
The building from the Meiji era is equipped with modern facilities, making it very comfortable to stay. Outside the window, there is a clear stream, and beyond it lies an old temple, offering the same view as people from the Meiji era might have seen. Additionally, both the hospitality and cuisine were exceptional, making this my favorite Ryokan in my life. I would love to visit again in a different season.

Historic Ryokan
The reviews were good, so I traveled a long way to visit. This historic Ryokan offers a relaxing atmosphere with its grand entrance, reception room with matcha welcome drinks, and elegant rooms. Despite the old building, renovations have made the facilities like the bathrooms and large public bath very comfortable. However, the outdoor bath had bees and insects floating in it, so I couldn't use it. Towels and amenities are available in the large public bath area, making it as convenient as staying at a regular Hotel. Having two yukatas was also helpful. Dinner was served in a calm private room overlooking the garden. We enjoyed fugu, Hida beef, ayu fish paired with Japanese sake—thank you for such a delicious meal! In comparison, breakfast felt lacking as many items seemed pre-prepared. Despite having reserved time slots for breakfast service, we waited nearly 10 minutes due to staff shortages; having a rice paddle would have allowed us to start serving ourselves sooner. That said, the freshly cooked rice was delicious. The shuttle service to the station was very convenient. This Ryokan truly lets you experience traditional Japanese hospitality!

Azaleas fill the windows of the Western-style house.
When you arrive at the entrance, staff will assist with your luggage and park your car. This accommodation exudes the elegance and dignity of a long-established tradition. The kimono-clad staff provide courteous and polite service. While the building is an old cultural property that has undergone multiple expansions, it has been carefully renovated. Authentic fittings, furniture, and decorations are featured throughout. Seasonal calligraphy, ornaments, and flower arrangements are displayed in various places, each seemingly telling its own story. The room for accommodation is located in the southeast corner of the property surrounded by walls, offering views of both the southeast and west gardens. The garden's azaleas in full bloom are stunningly beautiful. The room consists of a traditional Japanese-style room, a Western-style room with stone flooring equipped with a stove and sofa, a bedroom with wooden flooring adjacent to an open-view bath, as well as water facilities—all providing comfort wherever you stay within. Disposable slippers are provided; however, since stone floors can feel cold depending on the season, bringing thicker footwear might be advisable. The bath is an oval-shaped granite tub nearly 2 meters long with continuous hot water supply at an ideal temperature around-the-clock. Wooden double-glazed sash windows extend from floor to above head height for warmth but can fully open to create an outdoor-like garden bath experience. Deck chairs and bathrobes add extra comfort to this luxurious bathing space. Meals are served kaiseki-style in private Japanese rooms featuring alcoves furnished with chairs and tables overlooking the garden—a feast both visually appealing and deliciously satisfying in appropriate portions delivered at perfect timing. Allergy accommodations are impeccable. Several quiet foreign guests appeared to be enjoying their unique stay here as well!

It was a wonderful Ryokan, just as described in the reviews.
The Ryokan has a rich history, yet some parts have been renovated, allowing for a comfortable and relaxing stay with excellent hospitality. Thank you very much. As it operates as a culinary Ryokan, the meals were exceptionally delicious. (The breakfast featuring freshly cooked rice in a pot was perfectly prepared and highly satisfying.) I truly hope this kind of Ryokan continues to thrive for many years to come.

A cost-effective accommodation where the spirit of hospitality can be felt everywhere.
From the moment of arrival, we were warmly welcomed in a separate room, creating a special feeling right from the start. The accommodation has a calm and historic atmosphere, with enjoyable features like the lounge and exhibits at the old entrance. The room shows some signs of age but has been well-renovated and feels clean. It is spacious, with a massage chair in the connecting area for relaxation (though the private bath in the room is less recommendable). The toilet is slightly compact, but overall it was comfortable. The open-air bath was pleasant, and there was also a bathing area with waterfall-style showers. However, as the bathing area is not very large, choosing your time to avoid crowds might be advisable. The meals were outstanding—exceeding expectations based on the plan description—with delicate flavors using local ingredients that left a lasting impression. Meals were served in private dining rooms overlooking beautifully maintained gardens, enhancing an already excellent atmosphere. At night, we joined a firefly-watching tour and were amazed by how many fireflies we saw—it was truly moving. Above all else, you can feel "hospitality" throughout this accommodation. It made for such a heartwarming stay. Considering everything offered at this price point, it’s exceptional value—we would love to visit again!

Relaxing Accommodation
This is our second visit, following our stay last year. While the snowy scenery last year was beautiful, visiting during this season with lush greenery was truly wonderful. We stayed in a corner Room with a great view of Mount Norikura and other distant mountains, which made for an excellent stay. The bath in the Room was very spacious for one person, allowing us to relax and unwind comfortably. The meals were elegant and delicious, showcasing the best of Japanese cuisine. The head hostess personally greeted us, which warmed our hearts. The large public bath featured floating rose petals and a powerful jacuzzi that provided great relaxation and refreshment. This time we had to check out early due to a busy schedule, but next time we hope to enjoy a more leisurely stay. Thank you for your hospitality!

Amidst the charm of history and tranquility, we were moved by the seasonal river fish and warm hospitality.
After living in North America for five years, I returned to Japan for a short trip to refresh my mind and body, staying at Yatsusankan. Conveniently located just under a 10-minute walk from the nearest express train station, the accommodation offers serene views of a quiet temple, a small stream, and a charming bridge from the room windows. The tranquil scenery immediately set the tone for an enjoyable getaway away from urban noise. The room we stayed in was part of a wooden building constructed during the Meiji era. Walking through the maze-like corridors of this accommodation revealed design elements spanning Taisho, Showa, and Heisei eras. While steeped in history, modern renovations to water facilities ensured both cleanliness and comfort. Exploring these historical designs throughout the property was an experience in itself. Meals featured kaiseki cuisine highlighting seasonal local ingredients. We were delighted by river fish such as ayu (sweetfish), amago (red-spotted masu trout), and iwana (char) grilled with salt—flavors rarely found in North America that left us deeply impressed with their savory taste and aroma. The staff thoughtfully accommodated our preferences regarding portion sizes or disliked ingredients, allowing us to enjoy stress-free dining. The onsen features multiple open-air baths with distinct atmospheres where guests can soak while enjoying dappled sunlight in the morning or stargazing at night. The water temperature was perfect for extended soaks without discomfort; we indulged in onsen hopping several times during our stay. The staff provided attentive service throughout our visit, responding flexibly even to minor requests with warmth characteristic of Japanese hospitality. This experience rejuvenated not only my body but also my spirit after years abroad. Yatsusankan is highly recommended as an ideal retreat for overseas Japanese returning home—a place where you can rediscover Japan's beauty through all five senses.

A wonderful accommodation full of history!
I have visited Furukawa Town 4 to 5 times, but this time I stayed after the Furukawa Festival. The accommodation is a splendid place that reflects its historical charm, and exploring the ryokan was fascinating and enjoyable. The food was delicious, though it might feel a bit insufficient in quantity for younger guests... Breakfast was standard for Furukawa Town. I heard that about 70% of the guests are usually from overseas, so as a Japanese guest, I wished there were more distinct Hida flavors in the meals. Still, it was a great accommodation with a comfortable stay.

A Relaxing Accommodation
I have stayed here several times, and every visit is always a comforting experience thanks to the kindness of the staff. This time, enjoying snow-viewing while soaking in the open-air bath with sake was truly wonderful. The meals are consistently delicious every time—thank you so much. I look forward to visiting again in the future.

It was a wonderful trip.
This was my first time visiting Hida Furukawa and staying at Yatsusankan. The highlight was the incredibly delicious food. We enjoyed a course with fugu as the main dish, and everything was delicious. The warmth and coolness of the dishes, the colors, and the tableware allowed us to enjoy not only the taste but also the visual presentation, conveying the chef's hospitality. The bath was also excellent amidst the snowy scenery. (Enjoying sake in the bath was also fantastic.) We plan to visit again with the whole family.

I stayed here four y...
I stayed here four years ago, and once again, I was able to spend a relaxing and pleasant time. It is a high-quality space for adults. I don't think you should expect a glamorous atmosphere. Last time, we stayed in a room with an irori, and this time it was a room with a bed. We don't particularly like spacious rooms with many rooms, so it was a bit disappointing that the simple two-room space with an irori we stayed in last time was no longer available. However, we talked about how it might be nice to stay in a room with an open-air bath next time. While some properties in the center of Takayama have been renovated and have a somewhat awkward atmosphere that panders to a mix of Japanese and Western styles, I felt that Hachiman-kan (Hachiman-kan) has a perfect balance of Japanese and Western elements, creating a space that feels new by leaving some slight inconveniences. The food, which is our favorite part, was as delicious as ever, and the pop atmosphere of the head hostess who came during the meal was very pleasant. Everyone working there was wonderful and left no room for complaints, making it a very satisfying trip. I think Hida Furukawa in the snowy season is the best. We will visit again.

Excellent service. I felt the greatness of Japan at this historic Ryokan.
During the first snowfall, I visited Hida Furukawa for the first time on a long-awaited train trip. I wanted to see the scenery of white walls and carp swimming in the moat, but unfortunately, I couldn't see it because I moved on November 30th. However, it was nice to see the first snow along with the autumn leaves. Yatsusankan is a wonderful building with a history as a Ryokan in a post town from the Edo period. Upon arrival at the Stays, the staff kindly carried all our luggage. We were served matcha and Japanese sweets near the hibachi. The Room was a special suite called Tamayura, a newly renovated Room with a view of the river, and the Room's bath was spacious and comfortable. Dinner was served in a private Room on the first floor overlooking the courtyard. The kaiseki cuisine was served one dish at a time, with perfect timing. The wonderful dishes kept coming. The person who served our meal was very nice. They provided explanations of the dishes and introduced the town appropriately during the meal. We also had a greeting from the landlady and learned about the history of the Ryokan. The basic dishes, such as river pufferfish and Hida beef steak, were more than sufficient. The next morning's breakfast included grilled Hoba miso placed on freshly cooked rice. The freshly cooked rice was truly delicious. We left the Ryokan at 11 o'clock, but the person who took care of us from showing us to our Room to serving our meals for two days saw us off until we crossed the bridge and were out of sight. It was a very moving experience. Thank you very much. I sincerely express my gratitude.

It was a wonderful stay.
It was a lovely Room with a great view. The bathtub in the Room was deep and spacious, very comfortable, and I used it many times. The women's large public bath had a rose bath at certain times, and there was also a bubble bath section, perfect for relaxation. It was a trip full of bathing. Meals were enjoyed slowly and deliciously in a private room overlooking the Japanese garden. Thank you very much.

I stayed here for the first time during my trip to Shirakawa-go. The inn's atmosphere, meals, hot springs, and room were all wonderful. It became a great memory for my husband and me. I would like to stay here again.
