    Outstanding hospitality!

    This was a truly wonderful Accommodation. Our family takes 2–3 trips a year to an Onsen Accommodation that we can reach from Tokyo for one night, usually spending around JPY 30,000–40,000 per person. My wife chooses the Accommodation each time, but lately none have been memorable or especially appealing—until now. For the first time in a while, we found an Accommodation we genuinely want to visit again. Many of the staff are from Southeast Asia, but they told us they have passed JLPT N1 and also undergo a one-year training period. We never once had any trouble communicating. I previously lived in Thailand for about five years, so I already knew people from Southeast Asia are often even more diligent and hardworking than Japanese people—but I was still impressed by just how much so. Thanks to them, we were able to spend a very comfortable and pleasant time here. These days many staff members don’t wear name tags (perhaps due to measures against customer harassment), so I didn’t catch anyone’s name, but I would like to sincerely thank the woman who took care of our Room—she was wonderful and very thoughtful. The heartfelt send-off by all staff after checkout truly moved me. As for the Onsen: honestly, both the water quality and the bath itself felt fairly standard, though everything was very clean. One thing I noticed is that it’s great not having to bring towels into the bath area; however, you still need to carry things like fresh underwear or your phone. In the end I used a plastic shopping bag out of necessity, but it would be helpful if you could provide (and leave in the Room) a larger drawstring pouch like those commonly found at other Onsen facilities. Also, my wife said she felt scared because it was dark on the way to the large bath and inside the bathing area as well. Lastly, we felt that the air conditioner noise was slightly loud—just mentioning this in case it helps. And finally—the meals were outstanding! The balance, portion size, and taste were all impeccable. Because I’m quite big (and eat a lot), meals at most Accommodations aren’t enough for me; this time I shared small portions of my wife’s meal with our son as well and still felt about 90% full—in other words, very satisfied without being overly stuffed. While breakfast is often disappointing at many places these days, breakfast here was also excellent—especially because it wasn’t that typical thin and overly crispy dried horse mackerel you often see elsewhere. And above all: the wasabi was delicious! Being able to get refills freely made it even better. In any case, we definitely want to come again—thank you very much.

    - The shower room is outdoors and enclosed with wooden boards, giving it an Edo-period-like feel. Large insects were flying around, which was very frightening. - In the middle of the night, the wind and rain were strong, and the shower room door wouldn’t stay shut. It kept slamming against the sash frame so loudly that I couldn’t sleep. My husband got soaked trying to secure it with a bathrobe belt, but in the end the neighboring Room’s shower door was also banging, so the noise didn’t stop. - By morning the rain had stopped, but when I went into the open-air bath there was no eave for shade and the sunlight was intense. When I opened the parasol that had been provided, it nearly blew over in the wind and I panicked trying to deal with it. - Dinner was disappointing. For some reason nothing tasted good—the hot pot broth wasn’t good, and neither was the sauce on a simmered dish. They also served sweetfish stuck into a straw basket presentation that felt tasteless; I think it would be better served normally on a plate. The rice was cooked well, and fresh-wasabi rice was by far the best item. Because we weren’t seated in a private dining Room but at a table near the entrance, there were guests repeatedly going to the restroom while using vulgar language, which made me feel uncomfortable. The young foreign staff worked very hard to provide service, but after showing us to our Room, being greeted with formal three-finger kneeling etiquette as they left made me unsure how to respond—it felt more like something done because they were taught to do it rather than something natural. Also, walking back to our Room amid constant loud “Thank you!” calls from multiple staff after dinner felt awkward; I think more restrained service would be fine. Overall this trip was very disappointing. The Room looked clean in photos, but we regret choosing this Ryokan without researching its Facility details more thoroughly. We went expecting to relax but ended up sleep-deprived and rushed—it became an exhausting trip instead of a restful one.

    The hospitality is excellent.

    We stayed during Golden Week. There were many foreign staff members, and I was worried at first, but I was truly impressed by their wonderful, courteous service. It really made me feel that they value their guests. We had planned to leave early in the morning, but the next day there was torrential rain and we didn’t have an umbrella, so we were worried about how to get to the parking lot. However, a staff member waited for us at the time we were leaving and kindly escorted us to the parking lot under an umbrella. Even though we hadn’t told them our exact departure time, they came out at just the right moment—so I think they must have been waiting for quite a while. From start to finish, I was moved by the thoughtfulness, hospitality, and consideration of the foreign staff. That said, our Room had a problem with the toilet, and during the night there was heavy rain; perhaps because it’s along a riverbank, the sound of wind was very loud. Since the building is old, I think noise comes in through gaps. The meals were more than we could finish, and everything we tried was delicious. The flavor of the wasabi hot pot was also gentle and very good. As someone who works in customer service myself, their hospitality truly made me feel that I want to learn from them.     As the name suggests.

    We stayed in the Ema Room. The Room was spacious, and both the lounge and all areas were spotless. We were very satisfied with the attentive service throughout. The in-room, free-flowing hot spring bath featured well-maintained tea plants—very Shizuoka—and the washing area shower was fully stocked with amenities. There was nothing to fault about this Accommodation. At dinner, we were surprised by how sweet the fresh wasabi was. We took a walk along Yunomichi, and the clear water gently flowing by was truly soothing. We will definitely return.

    Guest Room Information

    Thank you very much for your hospitality the other day. My wife and I made wonderful memories. We were also deeply grateful for the warm consideration shown by all of your staff. When I enter a guest room, I always read the Accommodation guide first. That guide booklet felt a bit outdated. Also, please consider revising the in-house map as well—it may be a little hard to understand. If we have another opportunity, we would like to stay with you again.

    Wasabi!

    Being in Amagi, I enjoyed plenty of wasabi. I had caught a cold right before the trip and felt quite unwell, but after resting all day the previous day I recovered to about half by sheer willpower—and the wasabi made me feel even better, I think (laughs). A 10:30 check-out is truly appreciated. After breakfast, taking a short break and then enjoying the Onsen makes a 10:00 check-out feel far too rushed. It’s only 30 minutes, but that 30 minutes makes all the difference—I could get ready with time to spare. With time before my next plan (moving to an Accommodation in East Izu), I didn’t want to leave too early, so I borrowed a bicycle from Shirakabe and went cycling around Amagi. Even though it was January, it was warm enough not to need a jacket. I visited a rusk factory and tried yomogi mochi (recommended by the staff), enjoying pleasures you simply can’t experience by car. The staff were also wonderful. A young international staff member greeted guests with constant smiles and handled service in polite Japanese honorifics. When I asked a Japanese female staff member in the hallway, “My family asked me to buy wasabi pickled in soy sauce—can I get it nearby?”, she looked it up before check-out and gave me the details in a note (the shop at Joren Falls and its producer). Thanks to such excellent service, I left with happy memories.

    We had a great time.

    As mentioned in other Reviews, one distinctive feature may be the large number of international staff, but they treated us with exceptional courtesy—more so than many Japanese staff we’ve encountered. My wife said, “This was the kindest Accommodation we’ve ever stayed at.” The in-room bath was also fed directly from the source (free-flowing), so we could enjoy it anytime, which was wonderful. The giant tree bath and giant rock bath were also outstanding. Depending on the Plan, there is a lounge you can use with coffee and alcohol available, and the Japanese-style space with jazz playing was very comfortable. When people think of Izu, West Izu and East Izu are the classics, but I felt that the Onsen in nature-rich Central Izu is also a truly great destination. The building does show its age, but to account for drafts they had kerosene heaters running throughout. It kept us warm overall, though our impression was that the dining room felt a bit chilly. If you’re staying in midwinter, I recommend wearing the socks provided in your Room. From East Izu via Kawazu cherry blossoms, over Amagi Pass to Central Izu—this may become our go-to route.

    The wasabi hot pot is not that great.

    I relaxed in my favorite place, Izu, before spring arrived. The international staff were energetic and worked hard to provide pleasant service. The huge rocks and giant trees around the bath were impressive, and the water was smooth and at just the right temperature. One of the signature dishes is apparently a hot pot called “wasabi nabe.” You grate wasabi into a pot with shamo chicken and vegetables, but it didn’t really taste of wasabi; instead, it made the flavor seem muted. The saikyo-yaki fish that was served was also dry, which was disappointing. For breakfast, everything except the fish was delicious. It’s an atmospheric Accommodation created by renovating an old building, with great hot-spring water—another memorable stay for me.

    The Onsen is amazing.

    The Onsen was excellent. It was neither too hot nor too lukewarm, and we enjoyed both the open-air bath and the large public bath, which were clean. The open-air bath in the Room was also very nice. Considering the accommodation cost, the meals felt a bit lacking in luxury... However, the fresh wasabi was delicious. There were small steps here and there in both the Room and throughout the building, which was difficult for my elderly father. Most of the staff were from overseas, and they were so kind it almost felt like over-the-top service.

    I stayed here at the beginning of the year. The traditional building has been beautifully renovated with a stylish touch, creating a wonderful atmosphere. The hospitality and service were excellent, making my stay warm and enjoyable from start to finish. The New Year's menu was delicious and allowed me to fully experience the festive spirit.     Wonderful Room

    I stayed for the first time in December. The room was spacious and wonderful. With high ceilings and a table for four, it was a very comfortable space. I heard that many of the staff are from overseas, but everyone provided service with great care and politeness. There were no issues at all because they were from abroad. The entire accommodation was cozy, and I hope to visit again with an itinerary that allows me to spend more time there next time. Thank you also for accommodating my allergies!

    We are delighted to provide heartfelt hospitality.

    This will be my first stay in a year since last November. I really love this quiet, traditional-style accommodation. The open-air baths with the giant tree bath and giant stone bath are breathtaking, making me want to soak forever. The warm and delicious meals were very satisfying. Above all, the heartfelt hospitality of the staff was truly delightful. I look forward to visiting again next year!

    The staff is excellent.

    As mentioned in the reviews, the staff's hospitality was exceptional, more than making up for any minor language barriers. The meals were neither overly elaborate nor too simple, and the bath provided a relaxing warmth that reached deep into the body. (For someone like me with slight pain in my legs, navigating the rocky path to the rock bath was a bit challenging—though this is my personal issue.) The lounge had a calm atmosphere where I enjoyed delicious coffee and could read a book undisturbed. I left with a desire to return in winter and reunite with the wonderful staff at this accommodation.

    The staff members were working diligently.

    There were moments when communication was a bit unclear, but the effort was appreciated. The room's open-air bath was spacious and enjoyable, though we wondered if it was a free-flowing onsen. My wife mentioned she would have liked to see shower caps and hair ties provided. Dinner felt a bit disappointing as about 80% of the dishes were already set out rather than being freshly served. Having visited most of the nearby onsen accommodations, it felt like there were some noticeable differences in quality here—perhaps reflecting the slightly lower price point. The farewell send-off at the end, however, was perfect and truly touching. Thank you very much!

    Cost-effective Hotel

    The staff is friendly, the dinner portions are just right with no worry about food waste, and the pre-dinner plum wine is very delicious. I would visit again if I have the chance.

    The large stone and wooden baths were wonderful, and I was deeply impressed by the dedication and hard work of the Vietnamese staff. The cuisine was elegant and delicious. Although it is a traditional Japanese-style house, it is very spacious with impressive furnishings.

    With fewer guests, the Onsen was pleasantly lukewarm, allowing for a relaxing long soak. Fresh wasabi was included with breakfast, and both breakfast and dinner were delicious, leaving no leftovers! The Room offered views of natural greenery and a river, providing a refreshing experience. The staff's hospitality was also excellent. I would love to visit again in winter!

    The hot spring quality is excellent.

    You can enjoy the impressive volcanic rock bath as well as other baths with natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source. The quality of the spring water was excellent and felt amazing on the skin. The cuisine, featuring Amagi Shamo chicken and fresh wasabi that I had always wanted to try, was incredibly delicious and satisfying. Our Room along the valley provided a serene atmosphere, which my partner also loved. The friendly staff recommended an outdoor walking trail where we could admire the beautiful surrounding nature. We look forward to visiting again in a different season. Thank you!

    We visited Shirakabe...

    We visited Shirakabe with the purpose of seeing fireflies. As mentioned in the reviews, most of the staff were from overseas, but they all worked very hard, making our stay pleasant. The room was on the Amagi mountain range side, so we couldn't see the river, but we could hear the sound of water and feel a nice breeze, which made it very comfortable. Smoking is allowed in the room, so it's convenient for smokers. Perhaps because of the bamboo ceiling? The room had no tobacco smell at all. The meals were also delicious. As for the onsen, I personally prefer high-temperature baths... But for those who enjoy soaking slowly in lukewarm water, it would be perfect. It was an accommodation I'd like to visit again during a different season.

    Simple hospitality

    The bath was truly worthy of its name as a natural hot spring, offering excellent water quality. The large communal bath, surrounded by giant trees and stones, had slightly lukewarm water perfect for a relaxing soak. The open-air bath in the Room was smaller but had warmer water, making it very pleasant. However, since it is an authentic open-air bath, it might be inconvenient if it rains. The changing area near the large communal bath was small and lacked a sink, which might be slightly inconvenient for women. The meals were simple yet flavorful dishes featuring fresh wasabi and seemed to provide just the right amount of satisfaction for men. The Vietnamese staff members were doing their best to offer heartfelt hospitality despite some language challenges, leaving a positive impression. Although it rained during the day, the rain stopped by evening. At night near Otokobashi Bridge, about 10 fireflies floated gracefully around us—a delightful experience!

The exclusive lounge for special floors provides a relaxing Taisho-modern space with flowing jazz music and a thoughtful selection of complimentary beverages, including alcohol, making it hard to leave. The atmosphere is more modern than traditional, offering an extraordinary experience. We even returned after dinner for ice cream and sparkling water. Meals featured just the right portions of high-quality meat and fish; the young sweetfish was particularly delicious. There were also unique dishes that allowed us to enjoy wasabi in ways we had never experienced before—both fun and flavorful. Above all, we were touched by the heartfelt service and warm smiles of the young staff who attended to us throughout our stay. It was truly an excellent accommodation.

    Almost there...

    I think it is a very good accommodation, but with a few improvements, it could be even more comfortable. It would be nice to have baskets for going to the bath... Hairdryers and cosmetics in the open-air bath would also be appreciated... The hairdryer in the room is too old... The meal portions might be just right for women but are a bit small for men... When we returned from breakfast, we awkwardly ran into staff coming to put away the futon; perhaps this service could be optional… However, the hospitality was great as international staff worked hard and left a good impression, and the food was delicious.

    A beautifully maintained traditional house, a clean library, unique baths featuring giant trees and stones, and even Onsen water in the room's bath made for an enjoyable stay. It's impressive that such quality is maintained at such reasonable pricing these days.

    It was relaxing!

    We stayed as a family of three, including my husband and daughter. The special room with an open-air bath was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The exclusive lounge for the special room offered a relaxing space where we could enjoy drinks. We also enjoyed the large tree and stone baths. Since there is some walking distance within the facility, having a bathing basket might be convenient. The meals were all gently flavored and delicious. Although we were full, there were no heavy or greasy dishes, so it didn’t feel overwhelming. All the staff welcomed us with wonderful smiles and warm hospitality, making us feel at home. It is an excellent accommodation that we would love to visit again!

    The location, environment, and building were excellent, with a folk-modern interior design and tasteful furnishings. The spaciousness and cleanliness were also perfect, earning a score of 100. The highlight was the onsen baths with natural hot spring water. The large communal bath, stone bath, and wooden bath were all exceptional. However, the meals were disappointing, especially dinner. It slightly lowered our excitement. All three of us agreed it deserved a score of 60. It's not that we expected luxurious ingredients; perhaps it was the chef's skill? Breakfast was slightly better in comparison—the tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet) and tofu were delicious. Additionally, since most staff members are non-Japanese speakers, it would have been helpful to have written explanations for dishes during meals—such as details about the types of fish in sashimi or the five-item appetizer platter. While they explained verbally at the time, we couldn't understand what they said. After every meal, one staff member would say "Thank you!" as a signal for others to gather in line to bid farewell with coordinated gestures—a practice seemingly part of this accommodation's training. Even after check-out during our final send-off, they lined up neatly to see us off until we left. According to reviews from other guests who appreciated such hospitality practices greatly—it seems well-received by many—but for us personally felt excessive rather than comfortable. My husband prefers subtle hospitality styles; hence he found this approach less appealing. That said—better overly polite than rude! All staff members worked hard sincerely smiling warmly throughout making their efforts genuinely commendable overall!

    I was very satisfied.

    I was able to spend a relaxing time with a comfortable room with a bath and pleasant service. The open-air bath with huge rocks and trees was unique and unlike anything I had seen before. The dishes using wasabi were also very delicious, and the portions were sufficient. Although it was a bit far since we visited without using a car, it was such a good property that it didn't bother us at all. I would like to visit again.

    This was our second ...

    This was our second stay in the same Room. We always visit for family trips with my daughter's family and parents. The tatami Room (with futon) is connected to a Western-style room by a living room with an irori, allowing us to enjoy the Onsen while maintaining a comfortable distance during trips with parents. The large public baths (two locations) are also wonderful, but the private bath in the Room is slightly lukewarm, making it easy on the body even during long baths, which was very nice.

    A lovely retro-modern Stays

    The retro-modern interior, as stylish as in the photos, with a piano quietly playing, made the property very comfortable. The staff, including those from abroad, provided excellent service as per the reviews. The room and furnishings were also retro and lovely. However, since the ryokan's name is "Shirakabe," I expected the room to have white plaster walls, but the walls were covered with wallpaper, and some edges were peeling, which was a bit disappointing. The bath was as expected, with a continuous flow of hot spring water, and it was very good. Even though it was a cold day in Izu, it seemed to be appropriately heated, so it was fine. The famous bath with giant rocks and trees was simply amazing, but since the washing area was outside, it was a bit cold on a morning with a minimum temperature of -2 degrees. We were assigned a private room for meals, so we could enjoy them leisurely. The wasabi hot pot, a specialty for dinner, was good, but perhaps because the previous night's stay was exceptional, everything else felt relatively ordinary. The breakfast, with its stylish presentation, left a lasting impression. However, according to my wife, the attention to detail, such as the preparation of vegetables in the simmered dishes, was excellent for both breakfast and dinner.
