    The Onsen is amazing!

When I visited about six years ago, I had wonderful memories—not only of the Onsen, but also of how delicious the meals were and how lovely all the staff were—so I decided to stay again after a long time. As expected, the Onsen was excellent both in the Room and in the private baths! However… many other things were very disappointing. Even though we came all the way to Izu, it was discouraging when dinner consisted of chicken, pork, and beef. The staff member in charge of service didn’t seem to know the alcohol menu either, and breakfast was mostly pre-made items. Since we came to Izu expecting great seafood, it was truly disappointing. I understand that things are difficult these days, but I think more creativity and effort would help.

    Unfortunately.

It was disappointing that the cleaning didn’t seem very thorough, especially the windows. The shower water pressure was weak, and the temperature control was broken, which was also disappointing. There were so many insects in the open-air bath in the Room that my wife and child were too scared to use it. Since there is no large public bath either, it didn’t feel like an Onsen stay at all. We went for the fireworks, but we won’t be coming next year. I also felt it would be difficult without more Japanese staff members.

    The bath is amazing.

This was my fourth stay. The Room, meals, and service were all excellent, but above all, the bath was outstanding. Being able to soak while looking out at the sea without worrying about others is truly a luxury. With no fence or partitions around the bath, it feels wonderfully open. I would love to stay again.

    I had a relaxing stay.

We stayed in “Uzura” on the first floor. The beautifully built traditional house reminded me of my grandparents’ home from childhood. It was very quiet and relaxing. The stairs up to the private open-air bath are tough, but the view and the coffee milk after your bath are wonderful! The food was delicious, though it was more than enough for us as a senior couple—we ended up overeating anyway. We’d be happy if there were a lighter course for seniors. The staff were pleasant and attentive throughout. Next time, we’d like to stay on the second floor as well.

    A candid criticism.

This was my first return in a year. That said, I’ve been staying here for about 15 years, so I think it’s fair to call myself a repeat guest. Most of the staff are foreign nationals, but it’s clear they are dedicated and strive to provide courteous service. Communication is generally not an issue. However, they do tend to speak a bit fast at times, which can make explanations about the Accommodation and introductions to the dishes hard to catch—there is room for improvement there. Also, even if it’s only once or twice a year, I have stayed many times, so unless there have been major changes to the Facility or other aspects, detailed explanations are unnecessary. I felt the issues were more on the management side than with the staff during dinner. I was told that the head chef changed three months ago, and the overall menu had been revised. The appetizer and assorted starters felt somewhat pre-prepared or store-bought, but everything from the soup onward was good. I enjoyed it very much. One thing I couldn’t understand was the sticker on the plate where the braised pork was served—what was that? It seemed unnecessary. More concerning was the printed menu. Having my name on it added a nice special touch, but having it written in red felt unsettling. In addition, two items listed on the menu were not served; apparently different dishes were mistakenly printed instead. The server apologized, but this seems like an operational issue. After that, there was no further mention of it through checkout. Also, soy sauce and yuki salt were provided as condiments for sashimi, but soy sauce had spilled onto the yuki salt—this should have been noticed before serving. Breakfast was very delicious. In the past you could choose one type of dried fish; this time it was served as small portions of several kinds of fish instead. Since preferences vary, personally I would rather choose one type—but that may simply be a matter of taste. Also, there were two egg options: an Onsen egg and a raw egg (for rice). Since they feel somewhat similar in style, I thought one option might be better as something cooked. Finally—and for some reason—the Onsen water in my Room seemed better than before. It may just be my imagination since this isn’t something that changes suddenly anyway, but thanks to that I could relax and enjoy many baths at leisure. I didn’t get to see a sunset this time; however, even without one I never tired of watching the leaden sea with wind sweeping across it—it truly soothed me. Because this is an Accommodation I love dearly and want to continue enjoying comfortably in years to come، I’m offering these comments candidly despite how critical they may sound。 I look forward to being able to return again。

Aside from its traditional charm, the house does show its age in some areas.

The hospitality and service were excellent, and the meals were thoughtfully prepared. However, some of the in-room amenities felt a bit outdated.

This was my second stay, and it’s an Accommodation that makes me want to come back again.

I think my last visit was about 20 years ago. Since we have a dog, the number of places we can stay is limited, so it has been quite a while. Back then, I believe the private bath was separated into men’s and women’s baths. I felt that having a non-private bath offered more flexibility. The staff had a more international feel than before, but everyone was sincere and worked very hard to assist us, which left a great impression. The food was also excellent—especially the clear soup and miso soup. The open-air Onsen in the Room was difficult to adjust in temperature, but that is part of the luxury of free-flowing hot spring water. We were able to relax and feel refreshed. Thank you very much.

    Hospitality

I told them to come and pick up my luggage at 10:50 after breakfast, but no one came. I called the front desk, but I could never get through, so I carried my luggage to the front desk myself. When I arrived, they were chatting and smiling. When I asked why no one had come to pick it up, the person responsible disappeared. I don’t understand why they didn’t apologize. Another staff member apologized afterward, but I can’t accept that the person involved never apologized. If they had apologized, I would have felt better.

    The meals were especially outstanding.

There were only a few Japanese staff members, so communication felt a bit uncertain at times, but their sincere effort came through and left a very positive impression. The meals were excellent in both quality and quantity, and we were very satisfied. Our Room was two-story, but for guests with weak legs or those who need to use the toilet multiple times during the night, we recommend choosing a single-story Room. In-room loungewear and bathrobes are provided, but if I had to be picky, it would have been nice to also have pajamas.

    It was a wonderful Ryokan.

We stayed here for a commemorative trip to celebrate a special occasion. It was a wonderful Ryokan. Most of the staff were foreigners, but they were very kind and attentive. The creative kaiseki cuisine was beautifully presented, and everything was incredibly delicious. The portions were also very satisfying. The free-flowing natural hot spring Onsen was deeply relaxing as well.\nI would love to stay again. This Accommodation was perfect in every way—thank you very much!

Thank you for your attentive service! I’d love to stay again.

Thank you very much for your courteous service from our arrival through to seeing us off. The Room exceeded our expectations, and we were truly impressed. Both the Accommodation and the Room had a calm, spacious design, allowing us to relax at ease. The bed and futon were neatly prepared, and we slept comfortably. The meals were delicious, and the attentive serving—together with the private dining room—allowed us to enjoy our meal in a relaxed setting. We were also surprised to find that the chopsticks were engraved with the Accommodation name and our stay date, and that we could take them home—it was a first for us. We would like to cherish and use them at home as well. The private open-air bath was well equipped with excellent Facilities, making it very easy to use. The open-air bath in the Room was also wonderful, and we could soak leisurely in comfort. We stayed here to celebrate our child’s university graduation, and they were very happy as well. As parents, we were able to relieve our everyday fatigue and stress too. Thank you again for everything—we truly appreciate it.

    Wonderful

We stayed at this Accommodation during the transition from the Heisei era to the Reiwa era, and this was our second visit.\nLast time we stayed in the single-story villa (during bamboo shoot season), so this time we chose the two-story “Hotaru.”\nOur children, who were little back then, have grown up, and they also appreciated how wonderful both the Room’s atmosphere and the free-flowing Onsen hot spring are.\nDuring this stay, we only saw international staff.\nThere were a few moments when it was slightly hard to catch what was being said, but overall it felt like everyone was well trained.\nThere was one amusing moment at breakfast when we asked for water and miso soup arrived instead (laugh).\nOverall we were very satisfied. Precisely because it is such a wonderful Ryokan, if I had to point out anything: I noticed dust on the washroom ventilation fan and above the mirror, and weeds beside the open-air bath in our guest Room had grown long and their fluff was blowing around.\n(I dislike weed fluff, so I pulled out a few stems—sorry.)\nNext time, we would like to visit during bamboo shoot season or loquat season.

    I felt refreshed.

I visited with my wife and mother. Because my mother is elderly, we always look for an Accommodation with a private open-air Onsen in the Room. This time, I happened to find this place and the dates worked out, so we made a Reservation. With only 8 guest rooms and all buildings single-story, it was easy for my mother to get around. The Room had an irori hearth, and with its traditional farmhouse style and high ceilings, the atmosphere was wonderful. There were some clouds this time, but the sunset was beautiful. Although the staff were international, they were well trained and greeted us with warm smiles throughout. Dinner was served in a private dining room with a great view, and everything was absolutely delicious. The open-air Onsen in the Room felt slightly lukewarm due to the outside temperature, but at night we turned off the lights and soaked slowly under a sky full of stars—it was truly refreshing. We also loved that it is free-flowing from the source (no added water or heating). It was also nice that the reservable open-air bath became free to use after 10:00 PM. In the morning, we hiked up behind the property; there was a bamboo grove along the way and it was fantastic. Next time, I’d love to stay again in a different Room.

    Excellent!

We stay at this Accommodation every year because both children and adults love it. This was our fourth visit, and we were very satisfied—some of the meals had changed, and this time the morning bath times were less crowded, so we were able to use both private baths.

    Relax and unwind

Last time, I was very satisfied to be able to soak in the Onsen while looking out at the sea, so I stayed again this time to relax and unwind. This time, I chose a Plan with upgraded meals. There was a wide variety of dishes, and I was completely satisfied. There were many international staff members, but everyone provided heartfelt hospitality with great effort. Thank you very much.

    Favorite Accommodation

This is an Accommodation I like because I can relax in Nishi-Izu. The meals are delicious, but I would appreciate it if the serving pace could be adjusted to match how quickly we eat. This time, there was one disappointing point about the bath: moss that had built up under the chairs in the open-air bath. It looks unhygienic and unpleasant, so I think it should be improved. I would like to stay here again, so thank you in advance.

    Blessed with clear skies

The stunning sunset and starry sky lifted our spirits to the highest point. Dinner, which we had been looking forward to, was not only beautifully presented but also so delicious that it truly impressed us. The only disappointment was that we wished the open-air bath in the Room had been a little hotter. You can raise the temperature by adding hot water, but we hesitated to do so because it would take away from the free-flowing natural hot spring. In contrast, the private open-air bath was heated and in perfect condition. Although the international staff seemed a bit inexperienced, we see it as part of their learning process and look forward to seeing how they have grown on our next visit. We hope to see you again someday.

    We had a relaxing stay.

After climbing a steep slope, we arrived at the parking lot. Two staff members came out to greet us, but the person in charge of taking our luggage kept waiting even after we said we would carry it ourselves. Since we couldn’t gather our bags quickly, we ended up feeling rushed. Inside the Ryokan, the main building has the front desk, a souvenir shop, and the dining area, while the guest Rooms and baths are in separate buildings. For the baths, there are time slots for private use as well as free-use hours. However, since each Room has its own open-air bath, we hardly used the shared baths and mostly enjoyed the one in our Room. The open-air bath in our Room was available anytime and had a great view—our whole family used it many times. It was also perfect as a footbath. The meals were delicious with a wide variety of dishes, and we left completely full. Overall, it was a very satisfying Ryokan stay. That said, because this Facility is built on sloped terrain, getting around involves stairs. Even inside the Room you need to go up stairs to reach the bedroom, so it may be a bit tough for older guests. Also—while stylish—the lighting in the Room is generally quite dim; it’s relaxing but not ideal for doing any work (though I doubt anyone comes here to work!).

We had an amazing, unforgettable stay!

Since it was my first trip in a while, I chose this Accommodation with high expectations, and I was more than satisfied with the Facility and service—far beyond what I imagined! The happiest part was being able to relax in the open-air bath in my Room while enjoying the view as it changed throughout the day. Every dish was delicious! They used plenty of seasonal and local ingredients, and I could truly enjoy each one with all five senses. The staff who assisted us were also very kind and even took the time to recommend nearby shops. Since I wasn’t familiar with Izu, that was incredibly helpful! I will definitely be back again!

The free-flowing natural hot spring bath is amazing!

This was my first visit by rental car. During a pre-arrival confirmation call, I was told that “the roads near the Accommodation are narrow and include steep slopes,” and that was exactly the case—careful driving is necessary. The open-air bath attached to the traditional-style Room was, above all, outstanding. With free-flowing hot spring water straight from the source, it felt great on the skin, and the temperature was perfect for those who prefer lukewarm baths. The weather was clear during our stay, but if conditions are poor, there is only a small eave above the open-air bath, so it may be difficult to relax in the water for long. A private bath can also be reserved. I booked an earlier time slot, but the sunlight hit directly from the front and was far too bright—I regretted my choice of time. I should have checked sunset in advance and chosen a time around then instead. Most of the staff were non-Japanese nationals, but everyone spoke excellent Japanese, so we had no trouble communicating. This is an area where getting around basically requires a car, but it’s an Accommodation I would recommend to anyone who loves free-flowing hot spring water straight from the source.

    A Relaxing Accommodation

The traditional-style Room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable, and we were able to relax at a leisurely pace. While some signs of age are unavoidable, that only added to its charm—it felt like visiting a grandmother’s house in the countryside. We could also see the ocean from the Room, and the starry sky at night was beautiful. In short, it was truly soothing. Above all, the open-air bath with 100% free-flowing natural hot spring water was incredibly pleasant and washed away our everyday fatigue. It was amazing!! The meals were delicious... however, while we could tell that the foreign staff member was doing their best to explain everything, it felt like there wasn’t any extra touch (a sense of hospitality). Also, at breakfast they simply said “Grilled fish,” but didn’t tell us what kind of fish it was—so for some of the several types served, we never found out their names (we recognized kinmedai and horse mackerel). At checkout as well, there seemed to be a difference between guests whose luggage was carried to their car with a send-off and guests like us who carried our own luggage; in our case, the staff retreated inside without even seeing us off from the entrance. Seeing that left us a bit surprised... I’ve written quite a lot, but we would be happy if there were just a little more thoughtfulness from the staff. Overall, we think this is an excellent Accommodation where you can truly refresh your mind and spirit, so we would definitely like to stay again. Thank you very much for taking care of us during our stay.

We avoided the worst-case scenario, but...

Now that everything has finally been resolved and I’ve calmed down, I’m posting a Review. There’s too much to cover, including what happened this time, so I’ll post photos of the text instead. What was originally planned as a 2-night, 3-day stay turned into a 1-night, 2-day stay due to an “unexpected disaster,” and my trip to Nishi-Izu—almost my first—became the worst memory. I hope this will be of some help when choosing where to stay…

    Thank you for your support.

We stayed for two nights over the year-end holidays and enjoyed the sunset at a leisurely pace. The Onsen is free-flowing, so it felt a little lukewarm at first, but once we soaked in the bath, our bodies warmed up nicely. We also thoroughly enjoyed a generous variety of seafood dishes—it feels like this year will bring good things. Thank you very much.

    Family Trip

We stayed expecting a high level of service for an Accommodation costing over JPY 50,000 per person per night. We chose Nishi-Izu hoping to see the sunset, and fortunately we were able to watch the sun sink into the sea while soaking in the Onsen—absolutely wonderful. After warming up in the Onsen, we headed to our private dining room at the Ryokan, excited for dinner. We had an upgraded course, and far more delicious dishes than we expected kept coming—truly leaving us completely full. We had prepared a cake to celebrate a 60th birthday, but we were so full we could hardly eat it at all. First of all, the presentation was excellent. Each dish had its own story through the tableware and garnishes, and the seasoning was perfect as well. Over a full two hours—with drinks too—our family kept saying “delicious” again and again; it was an extremely satisfying dinner. The non-seafood course also looked tempting. I would love to come back just for dinner again. Chef, thank you very much for such a wonderful menu—it was an outstanding full-course meal.

An accommodation offering not only beautiful sunsets and an Onsen, but also exceptional cuisine.

For our anniversary, we made a Reservation because we wanted to stay at an Accommodation with sunset views. In mid-December, timed for the 4:30 PM sunset, we were able to watch the sun sink exactly as hoped from the open-air bath in our Room. The in-room bath was not heated and felt a little lukewarm (for me as a man), but that also meant I could soak for longer. For women, it may be just the right temperature. At night, enjoying an open-air bath under a sky full of stars was wonderful. Because it’s a private in-room bath, you can change the time and enjoy it as many times as you like—this is part of its appeal. In addition to the in-room bath, there is also a reservable private open-air bath available free of charge. The water there was slightly hotter—perfect for a quick soak—and the complimentary bottled milk after bathing was another nice touch. Some Google Reviews mentioned that “the meals are average,” and since our main purpose this time was the sunset and Onsen, we didn’t set overly high expectations for the food. In reality, however, we were pleasantly surprised by an array of thoughtfully crafted dishes. Local ingredients were incorporated in just the right way; while seasoned to pair well with alcohol, each dish still had real depth of flavor. Pairings such as mushroom rice with garlic and salted hijiki showed careful attention to balance. There were plenty of dishes overall, yet each portion was just right—and I think plating that doesn’t leave you overly stuffed is an important part of truly enjoying a meal. At breakfast, even the Caesar salad—with its subtly sweet dressing—blended naturally into the Japanese set meal. The chopsticks used at dinner were engraved with our stay date and could be taken home; I appreciated this small gesture that creates a lasting travel memory. You can really sense the chef’s creativity and refinement within a limited budget; personally, I felt this Ryokan is worth visiting for its cuisine alone. Although many staff members are foreign nationals, their training is thorough and we never felt inconvenienced. There were moments when Japanese was slightly hard to catch, but it felt like only a minor issue. The building shows some age and the interior is simple, but it had everything we needed. We unexpectedly found an excellent Accommodation here—and would love to return again.

    I love Onsen.

The ocean view from the Room was wonderful, and it was great that we could use the in-room open-air bath anytime. The bottled milk and coffee milk at the private open-air bath were very delicious. We thought it would have been even better if there had been a bit more creativity in the meals.

    Unfortunately

This was our accommodation for the second night of a 4-night, 5-day trip to Izu. We were looking forward to enjoying the open-air bath in our room, so we cut our sightseeing short and checked in early. However, we were told there was no hot water, and we could only use it after dinner. This was a significant downside, and the response from the staff felt quite careless. Even at check-out, there was no apology offered—very disappointing. The only positive aspect was the staff member who served us during dinner.

    The bathroom was disappointing.

At check-in, a Japanese woman briefly appeared, but the rest of the service until check-out was handled by foreign staff. While having foreign staff is not an issue, their Japanese was limited, making in-depth conversations difficult. The room was dark and the heating did not work well. The private open-air bath attached to each room seemed to be a highlight but was almost like a cold bath. It appeared that the water had not been replaced or cleaned properly. Dinner was delicious, but while breakfast had many items, it felt like a random assortment of dishes. I don't think I would stay here again.
