    It was an Onsen where we could soak and relax at a leisurely pace.

    Both the building and the garden are beautifully maintained—truly an Accommodation worthy of its status as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. At Tenpyo-no-Yu, we were able to relax and enjoy the Onsen while watching the carp. The cuisine may be creative, but in a way it felt fairly ordinary; despite the excellent wasabi served alongside, I didn’t feel the menu was designed to pair well with it. Perhaps because it had to be carried a long distance, some hot dishes arrived cooled, and there were so many items that we ended up leaving some, which was a bit disappointing. I thought it might be nice to have an upgraded course with smaller portions. There are many stairs, so it may be challenging for guests with limited mobility.

    The bath is outstanding, too.

    I visited because I was interested in the building, and I was soothed by the fresh hospitality of a new attendant. I was also impressed by all four baths. In particular, our in-Room attendant—young yet calm and kind—made our stay especially comfortable. Thank you very much. I used to prefer acidic springs, but I fell in love with the silky feel of this renowned hot spring and am even considering switching to alkaline! Thank you again for everything.

    It’s in a great loca...

    It’s in a great location for exploring Shuzenji. The building is impressive and has a strong sense of history. However, there are many stairs, so having handrails would make it feel safer. The dining attendant was young but very capable and made a wonderful impression.

    A Historic Ryokan

    This is a lovely Ryokan with a real sense of history. We had in-room dining, and the staff member in charge was very pleasant. Each Onsen had a great atmosphere and we were satisfied, but it was very disappointing that we couldn’t see the koi in the pond that is said to be visible from the Onsen, because algae on the glass facing the pond completely blocked the view.

    The beautiful garden was truly refreshing.

    This was my first visit in 12 years, and the place was just as wonderful as ever, leaving me feeling truly calm and at peace. The garden pond on the grounds, the colors of the early-blooming cherry blossoms, the historic buildings, and the arched drum bridge connecting them all were beautiful. I also thoroughly enjoyed the various Onsen baths, including the Tenpyo Bath. From my Room I could see the bamboo grove path across the Katsura River, and especially at dusk and dawn I was able to enjoy stunning scenery and spend a truly fulfilling time. I would love to return when I want to relax again.

    A wonderful long-established Ryokan

    We stayed with relatives. The building and garden were wonderful, and we ended up taking many photos—especially around the covered walkway overlooking the garden. Every dish was carefully prepared while making the most of high-quality ingredients, and everything was delicious. As for service, replies to our pre-stay email inquiries were slow, and we never received a response to our second inquiry, so we felt a bit uneasy until arriving; however, the on-site service was very pleasant, which put us at ease. Also, the yellow citrus fruit in our Room was delicious. The Shuzenji Onsen area is also a lovely place, so we would like to stay again.

    An Accommodation you’ll want to visit again.

    The drink prices were reasonable, and we were completely satisfied with everything—the meals, hospitality, facilities, and baths. The Tenpyo-style bath was wonderful, and the private family bath was only 1,100 yen even though it’s an extra charge. There were several lovely baths, and for the first time we enjoyed trying multiple baths in one stay. Dinner was excellent as expected, and breakfast also offered a wide variety of dishes—we were truly full. Every staff member provided pleasant service. We were a little too late for the plum blossoms, but we thoroughly enjoyed Shuzenji. Thank you very much.

    The atmosphere was amazing.

    The Ryokan’s atmosphere, cuisine, and hospitality were all wonderful, and we had a great time. I don’t usually eat a big breakfast, but it was so delicious that I had an extra serving of rice. Having a private bath was fantastic. For men, the Yukibana bath was only available once for a short time slot, and I missed it, which was a bit disappointing—but I’ll look forward to it next time! Thank you for your thoughtful attention to detail.

    Since the building is old, you’ll miss out if you don’t enjoy its charm.

    Although it has been thoroughly renovated, the building itself is inevitably old. You need to be prepared to appreciate an older property. In winter, please expect that the Room may not warm up fully and can feel cold. On the other hand, there are many bath areas to enjoy, ranging from atmospheric traditional ones to newer facilities. The meals are also excellent in a Kyoto style. The parking lot is a short distance from the Ryokan; if you leave your car with them, they will take it to the lot and bring it back at check-out. However, I would like staff to wear gloves when driving guests’ cars. The steering wheel was sticky (possibly from hand cream), and my hands became sticky as well. After leaving the Ryokan, I stopped and cleaned/degreased the steering wheel with alcohol wipes so it felt smooth again. I hope this point will be improved.

    I stayed for two nights at the end of the year.

    I stayed for two nights from 12/28 to 12/30. It was my first stay. I was amazed by the depth of history and culture of the accommodation. It truly felt like a traditional Japanese Onsen Ryokan, making my stay very interesting and enjoyable. The hospitality of the staff was also wonderful. I would love to stay again. Thank you very much!

    A quiet accommodation with excellent facilities beyond just the building and onsen.

    Not only is this accommodation a place to enjoy important cultural properties, but the meals are also delicious, with both quantity and quality being just right for someone in their 60s like me.

    Onsen Indulgence

    The highlight of this accommodation is undoubtedly the variety of onsen baths, including the Tenpyo Grand Bath. With alternating schedules for men and women, you can enjoy a range of unique baths (onsen, natural hot spring flow) including private baths and in-room baths. My top recommendation is the Tenpyo Grand Bath, where you can relax while watching koi swimming in the pond... It’s fascinating to think how people in the past came up with such elegant ideas. During check-in and check-out times, the lobby tends to get crowded with foreign guests, including inbound travelers. It might be worth reconsidering operations to allow check-in and check-out directly from your room.

    The architecture is worth seeing.

    We stayed in one room in the Kiri Wing and one room in the Hana Wing, with my parents and us as couples. Both rooms were surprisingly simple (even though the Kiri Wing was a semi-VIP room), and while the meals were not particularly luxurious, the Accommodation Fee was relatively high. Although meals were served in-room, it seems reasonable to consider that part of the Accommodation Fee goes toward maintaining, managing, and preserving this important cultural property. Additionally, despite having reserved a guided tour of the registered cultural property at 16:00, no guide appeared on time, and we had to wait for about 20 minutes. Time is precious during travel; therefore, punctuality and attentiveness are essential.

    The Japanese Ryokan

    We stayed as a family. Although we added one more person to our initial reservation, everything went smoothly as we informed the accommodation in advance. The room was even upgraded, which was a delightful surprise from the start. Having meals served in the room was a rare experience for us and made us slightly nervous at first, but the staff carefully adjusted to our relaxed pace, allowing us to enjoy a leisurely time together. The most memorable points were: - **Staff** Their attentive care stood out everywhere—for example, preparing our footwear before we even mentioned our names when going out. The explanations about the dishes were appropriately detailed, and they answered questions promptly, showing their deep knowledge of the cuisine. - **Garden** The view of the garden, including koi fish in the pond, was so captivating that we could have watched it endlessly without getting bored. - **Baths** There were four baths with alternating schedules throughout the day for variety. Additionally, my family used a private bath and said it was absolutely worth experiencing at least once. - **View from Room** The autumn foliage along Katsura River and its flowing waters provided an incredibly soothing sight. - **Location** With Shuzenji Temple, Tokko-no-Yu hot spring spot, and Bamboo Forest Path nearby—even though weather conditions weren’t ideal—we still enjoyed exploring these areas. To be honest, I didn’t know much about this ryokan when making my reservation but ended up having an extraordinary experience beyond expectations! We are very satisfied and would love to visit again!

    A traditional Ryokan with a sense of history

    A traditional Japanese-style Ryokan with a sense of history. However, the interior is well-maintained and clean, making it an excellent stay. The Onsen features several small open-air baths, providing a delightful experience. The staff's hospitality, with their warm smiles, made the trip even more enjoyable. The meals offered a wide variety of dishes, and I felt sorry for not being able to finish everything. After checking out, I was able to leave my travel bag and explore the Shuzenji Onsen area on foot with ease. Every staff member was warm and welcoming, making me want to stay here again with my family. The service provided at this accommodation cost is outstanding. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

    It was wonderful!

    The building's design and ambiance were, of course, excellent, but the cleanliness and functionality of the Facility were also modern and user-friendly. Above all, the meals showcased meticulous care and skill that cannot be replicated by high-end Japanese restaurants in the city. The veteran staff provided just the right amount of explanation and conversation, making our stay even more enjoyable. Every staff member offered attentive service.     A Fulfilling Stay at a Long-Established Ryokan

    The moment I stepped in, I felt the charm, warmth, and value of this cultural treasure. Staying here allowed me to fully experience its allure. The beautiful view of the bamboo grove and Katsura River through the large windows of the room was like a painting. Enjoying breakfast and dinner while admiring this scenery was truly exceptional. The staff member assigned to our room had a warm personality that added joy to our stay. Although there were no meat dishes in the meals, every dish was visually stunning and delicious, leaving us completely satisfied. We also enjoyed all the baths available at the accommodation. Its central location made it very convenient for strolling around the onsen town. Walking along a bamboo path in yukata at night became a memorable experience as well. It was an absolutely wonderful stay!

    It was wonderful.

    It was fascinating to learn that the accommodation has hosted renowned authors and been used as a filming location for dramas. Both the exterior and interior are wonderfully retro and charming. The staff member who attended to us was incredibly kind and helpful, which we greatly appreciated. We enjoyed a private bath and delicious in-room dining. It felt like stepping back in time, allowing us to relax in such a unique atmosphere, which made us very happy. Unfortunately, due to heavy rain, the river flowed with a roaring sound instead of its usual gentle murmur. While I thought it would have been even better on a sunny day, I also found the rain quite enjoyable in its own way. I had a wonderful time with my friends at the accommodation despite the weather.

    A Heartwarming Accommodation

    Stayed at Hana no Tou in the lush greenery of Shuzenji. The spacious room's large windows offered a picturesque view of the river's gentle flow and fresh green maple leaves. Truly a space loved by literary masters. Checked in at 3 PM, enjoyed all the Onsen, explored the Ryokan, and had a relaxing stay—this seems to be the best way to enjoy Arai Ryokan. The stunning open-air bath in the forest is highly recommended for women during daylight hours before sunset (for men, it's available the next morning). The young attendant provided attentive service throughout our stay, leaving us deeply impressed. From architecture to koi ponds, gardens, and delicious meals—everything was exceptional. My heart felt fulfilled throughout my stay. This is an accommodation I will definitely visit again. Thank you very much!

    Traditional Ryokan

    This was my first stay in Shuzenji. I go on monthly Onsen trips, and this time I was excited to stay at a traditional Ryokan for the first time. Positive points: - The Ryokan's design (partially renovated with modern Japanese interiors) was excellent. - The Tenpyo bath and private baths were stunning. - The view of the bamboo grove path from the room was beautiful. - The appetizers and sashimi served during meals were very delicious. - Parking was available until 3 PM the next day. Negative points: - I wanted to take my time choosing yukata and obi with my companion, but after selecting a yukata color, it felt like I had no choice but to go with the staff's recommended obi, which made me uncomfortable. - Although meals were served in-room, they were brought out too quickly (about every 10 minutes). While I understand that freshness is important, I prefer savoring meals slowly while sharing impressions with my companion; it felt rushed and stressful when dishes were almost taken away before we finished eating them. As someone who enjoys relaxing at their own pace in an Onsen Ryokan, this place might not have been a perfect fit for me personally. Honestly, paying attention to small details left me feeling tired. Thank you very much!

    A Relaxing Accommodation

    The hospitality was delightful. The room was relaxing. The garden was beautiful, and I was captivated by the koi fish. It was fun to explore the various baths throughout the accommodation. The meals were incredibly delicious, and I enjoyed rice served from a traditional container after a long time. For those accustomed to modern hotels, some inconveniences might be felt. However, I found solace in this historical accommodation reminiscent of a bygone era. If given the chance, I would love to visit this accommodation again.

    A bit disappointing

    I stayed here for the first time about a year and a half ago. This time, the room was different; the futon had been replaced with a bed, and meals were moved from the room to a large dining area, which was slightly disappointing. Additionally, I was woken up around 3 AM by noisy neighboring guests, which made me disappointed to see inconsiderate behavior. Perhaps my high expectations from my first stay made me more sensitive to these changes.

    Experience at Arai Ryokan

    Unable to take a long holiday, I decided to visit just for lunch. It felt like a trial version of the experience at Arai Ryokan, in the best sense. I visited during the transition time between accommodation guests, which made me feel slightly apologetic. However, I thoroughly enjoyed a delicious lunch kaiseki while admiring the garden and had the luxury of relaxing in the large public bath all to myself—completely satisfied. This is not an accommodation for simply traveling somewhere but rather a place to stay and spend time forgetting daily life—a small taste of that experience was possible here. I had an absolutely wonderful time.

    A charming traditional Japanese-style Ryokan

    I chose this place because I wanted to relax alone. I was lucky to be upgraded to a spacious Room with an indoor Onsen for some reason. The mix of old and modern interior was harmonious and lovely. The bath here is wonderful. You can see the pond from the bath window, sunlight streams in fantastically illuminating the bathroom, and there is a semi-open-air bath with a separate washing area, offering a variety of enjoyable options. Meals were creatively prepared using local ingredients like wasabi and seafood, but there seemed to be more cold dishes than hot ones, possibly because it was served in the Room. Amenities and services are at a minimum level, but since it's a traditional Ryokan, I felt that it added to its charm as Arai Ryokan (Arai). Also, since you have to walk outside quite often (which is part of its appeal), those who dislike cold might want to avoid visiting in midwinter. Bringing warm loungewear turned out to be the right choice. Despite my various comments, it was an excellent Property where you can feel its distinguished history. Thank you for your hospitality.

    It was my second vis...

    It was my second visit in 4 or 5 years. I was delighted to stay in Room 3 of the Kiri building, which I had long admired, and the attendant who took care of us was very nice. The property has been recently renovated, and I felt that it would be wonderful if Arai Ryokan continues for hundreds of years to come. What was disappointing was that the number of koi in the pond had drastically decreased, and we couldn't feed them because it was winter. Feeding them from our room was one of the things we were looking forward to. Although managing living creatures might be difficult, koi are an important element from an aesthetic perspective, and I think the pond is one of Arai Ryokan's main attractions. So when there are many healthy koi swimming again, I'd like to visit once more.

    We stayed at the property to celebrate our wedding anniversary and mentioned it in our comments. We didn't expect anything special, but this was the first property that didn't acknowledge our anniversary at all. The bath was very nice, but it was crowded, and there was no space in the changing area. The meals were delicious, but several dishes were brought out together due to the property's convenience, so even the dishes we wanted to eat warm were not warm, which was disappointing. Additionally, we were told that we didn't need to check the drinks ordered during dinner, but at checkout, we were billed for expensive drinks we hadn't ordered. If we hadn't noticed, we might have paid for them. We pointed out the mistake, and the unordered drinks were removed. The location, bath, and building are wonderful, but these issues stood out more because of that.

    It was extremely cold and very disappointing.

    I was attracted by the fact that this is a historical Ryokan, but I forgot that historical also means the Facility is old. The temperature was about 4 degrees even in the morning and evening, but perhaps because it was a windy day, the Room was cold, and as others have mentioned, the changing rooms in the baths were also cold (except for the Ayame bath), and there were few baths with showers and hairdryers, so it was disappointing that it was just cold. This was the first time I stayed at an Onsen Ryokan and couldn't relax. At night, I could hear conversations from the Room next door, and the futon was thin, so I couldn't sleep well. Although it was just one night, I came back more tired... My cough relapsed because I was recovering from an illness. I wonder if it was because it was a cheap Room... Even so, I felt it was not worth the price. I am really disappointed with this long-established Ryokan. I think it's inevitable that the corridors and toilets of the baths and Rooms are cold due to the Facility. However, it was very disappointing that the Room was not warm at all when I checked in. The heater was on, but it was not effective and took a long time to warm up, and later a heater was brought to the Room. I am grateful for that. However, although a humidifier was also brought, the staff seemed not to know how to use it, and when they said it was on, I waited for a few hours, but it didn't work, and it finally worked when I turned it on again. Since it was cold with just a yukata, a haori was also prepared in the Room, but there was no explanation, so when I asked at the reception, they responded in an exasperated manner, saying it was in the Room, which was also disappointing. The Nakai-san provided very polite service. All the staff who greeted me as we passed by were very friendly and left a good impression. The only thing I could enjoy without any problems was the meal. Everything was delicious, and I was satisfied to be able to eat local specialties (seafood, shiitake mushrooms, wasabi, etc.). There seemed to be many guests from abroad, so they might think that the Facility is old and cold, but honestly, I didn't feel like I could fully experience the goodness of a Japanese Ryokan. I wish I had gone in a warmer season... It was very disappointing because I was looking forward to it.
