    The private bath was excellent.

    Standard rooms are not highly recommended. Reviews from guests who stayed in other rooms seemed better, but since the room doesn't have a private bath, you need to use the public bath or a private one. However, the public bath had floating insects, and the top of the changing shelves was dusty as if it hadn't been cleaned in ages. The bedroom smelled strongly of mold, which was quite unpleasant. There were cobwebs, and even the provided yukata-like attire smelled musty. The windows were dirty too. It might be worth paying a bit more for a better room. The smell made me feel unwell at times. There was an air purifier in the room, but it didn't seem to address these issues. I upgraded my meal plan, but I couldn't tell what was different from the standard menu. I don't think I'll return. Cleaning is definitely needed here—it would make such a difference! It was supposed to be for a special occasion, but I ended up feeling disappointed. Breakfast tasted good overall; however, portions were small and there were burnt bits on some rice dishes while miso soup wasn't hot enough. Thank you for your hospitality nonetheless!

    A high-quality accommodation for adults

    The entrance, lobby, hallway, and stairs were all impeccably clean, making for a pleasant stay at this accommodation. The room featured an open-air bath where we could enjoy the refreshing greenery while soaking in the hot water multiple times. All the staff members were young but provided courteous and friendly service with smiles. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent, and any leftover rice cooked in an earthen pot was thoughtfully made into rice balls and wrapped neatly for us. However, one downside was that the futon felt slightly firm, which I considered a minor drawback. I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much!

    Visited for the first time in four years.

    After four years, we were warmly welcomed back. We met a foreign female staff member whose Japanese had improved significantly compared to four years ago, which was truly impressive. Some parts of the facility had been renovated. While I felt the older private Onsen baths had more charm, the new ones were also clean and pleasant. It was the season of fresh greenery, but cherry blossoms were still blooming in Shima Onsen, providing a very soothing experience. Thank you very much!

    A wonderful accommodation for true relaxation

    I had a wonderful time. First, the meals were incredibly delicious, with each dish carefully prepared and showcasing attention to detail. The breakfast was also exceptional, making me feel happy from the start of the day. The staff's hospitality was excellent, allowing me to enjoy my stay comfortably throughout. From check-in, their thoughtful care and clear explanations about the accommodation provided a sense of reassurance. They kindly answered any questions with a smile, and I truly appreciated their warm hospitality. Above all, the private open-air Onsen in the room was outstanding. Relaxing in the Onsen while enjoying the view from my room was an extraordinary experience that instantly relieved all my daily stress. The water temperature was perfect, making it so enjoyable that I wanted to soak multiple times. The entire accommodation was clean and had a calm atmosphere, making it ideal for those who wish to spend time quietly. I would love to visit again. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

    The Best Snow-viewing Hot Spring

    The morning snowfall during our stay and the view from the open-air bath in the room were breathtaking! We were deeply moved by the hospitality of the beautiful landlady! The heartfelt service by the Sri Lankan staff was touching! We truly appreciated the chef's quick response in accommodating a sudden change to ingredients we couldn't eat! Thank you for all these memorable moments during our stay!

    First Visit to Shima Onsen

    My first visit to Shima Onsen, I was drawn to the name "Tokiwasure no Accommodation" and made a reservation. Based on reviews, the meals had high ratings, and they did not disappoint! Each dish was crafted with care. It was my first time trying marinated Gin-Hikari fish, and it was absolutely delicious. Above all, the freshly cooked rice was shining and incredibly tasty—I couldn't resist having seconds, which led to a 2kg weight gain over these two days. I enjoyed the onsen four times during my stay. With only eight rooms in this small-scale accommodation, I could relax without encountering other guests as if it were a private experience. The private baths were accessible without needing a reservation as long as they were available—this system worked perfectly. The staff members, including the proprietress, were all very kind and made me feel at ease. The balance between the quality of the accommodation and its accommodation fee was excellent, making for an extremely satisfying holiday. I would love to visit again in another season. I also left something behind by mistake but received prompt assistance when I requested it be sent via cash-on-delivery—it was very helpful!

    The Onsen in Shima is excellent.

    A charming accommodation combining a traditional and retro atmosphere. The service was neither outstanding nor disappointing. With only 8 rooms, it offers an intimate and private experience, giving the impression of being run by a small but dedicated team. However, the dining experience felt somewhat rushed. While the staff were polite in their manner of speaking, they would enter unexpectedly during meals—once at night asking "Is it time for dessert?" and in the morning asking "Shall I prepare coffee for you?" This made it difficult to enjoy meals leisurely, especially as I was traveling with my mother in her late 70s and my young daughter. It might be worth considering guests' pace and age composition more thoughtfully. Our neighboring table seemed to be having a banquet-like gathering; they were already there before we started our meal and still dining even after we finished eating, enjoyed the public bath, and returned. The food itself was delicious! Additionally, Shima Onsen's water is soft with just the right temperature—perfect even for someone like me who usually can't stay long in hot baths. I could relax fully while soaking in it! The room was clean with well-stocked amenities. The shampoo provided left hair moisturized rather than dry (personal opinion). However, one of the private baths had drainage issues making its shower unusable at that time. Construction work on exterior areas required walking over plywood boards to enter; I'm curious to see how beautiful it will look once completed. While I'm unsure if I'll stay here again specifically, Shima Onsen is a quaint destination—not overcrowded like Ikaho—and truly lovely overall!

    A Ryokan with a polite and welcoming atmosphere, especially known for its delicious cuisine.

    Positive Points: - The food is truly delicious. While each dish may not feel extravagant or flashy, they are meticulously prepared, and every course exceeds expectations, making the experience exciting. It seems a lot of care and effort goes into the preparation. - The staff's hospitality is excellent. Including staff from overseas, their service is outstanding. - Quiet and relaxing atmosphere with access to books available for borrowing, which is a nice touch. - Private onsen baths can be used without a reservation if they are available. Points of Concern: - The facility appeared older than it looked in the photos. I stayed in a standard room and might have had an impression based on other types of rooms shown in pictures. - There was no humidifier in the room. With only air conditioning, the room became quite dry, which was uncomfortable at times; having one would make the stay more comfortable. - The onsen uses a circulation system for its water supply.

    I had a relaxing and peaceful time.

    Upon arriving at the parking lot at our scheduled check-in time, a staff member immediately came out to assist us. Check-in was smooth, and we were extremely satisfied with the room! We stayed in the Keyaki Room, which featured a living area, bedroom, terrace, and an open-air bath—a truly perfect space. The bath was slightly lukewarm but allowed for a relaxing soak while enjoying the view. Despite the cold weather and heavy snow on the second morning, the warm water kept us comfortable and cozy. Meals were served in-room, and every dish was incredibly delicious—truly unforgettable! As a special treat from the hostess, we enjoyed potato paste with Joshu beef in Nikujaga style. We also ordered an additional platter of Joshu beef sirloin and filet steak; though it left us completely full, it was so delicious that we couldn’t leave anything behind. On our departure day amidst heavy snowfalls, we had to stay in our car for about an hour after checking out due to certain circumstances. The staff kindly cleared snow around our car multiple times to ensure we could leave whenever ready—such thoughtful service! This is definitely an accommodation I would love to stay at again.

    What a waste!

    Meals were highly satisfying. The dishes were generally lightly seasoned, promoting health and deliciousness, leaving us very satisfied. It was disappointing that the futon was not prepared as promised during dinner. A minor inconvenience was that no one was present at the parking lot or front desk upon arrival. The parking area is quite narrow, making it unclear where to park without guidance. After parking, we had to carry our luggage and ring the bell at the front desk for assistance. Although we arrived later than our scheduled time, it felt like the balance between price and service (especially at the front desk) could be improved.

    It was a bit disappointing.

    We visited for a trip to celebrate my partner's birthday. We often stay at accommodations with private open-air baths in the room. Upon arriving by car, there was no one to greet us, and we were unsure where to park. The parking situation could be improved. Since it required parallel parking, we opted for a paid late check-out the next morning, but received a call asking us to lend our car key so another vehicle could be moved. If that's the case, valet parking might be a better option from the start. At check-in, I felt that charging for late check-out on such an occasion was unnecessary. As it was a birthday trip and we wanted to relax, we chose this option; however, simply stating "check-out is at 11 AM tomorrow" would suffice. This could also have been confirmed during payment. In the evening when heading out to Sekizenkan nearby, they kindly lent us flashlights and bells which made me happy; however, they asked us to leave our room key behind. When we returned after about 30 minutes or so, I found that the key left at reception had been left out in plain sight—this seemed unacceptable even for such a short time. As meals were served in-room both morning and evening while leaving doors wide open throughout service times—it raised concerns about security especially since keys were left unsecured earlier too! In previous stays elsewhere offering similar dining arrangements within rooms—doors remained closed even if not locked entirely. For dinner sashimi dishes—I felt soy sauce & wasabi should’ve been provided alongside them naturally without needing requests separately perhaps? Being full already meant leaving some rice dish unfinished—but staff didn’t offer packing leftovers into rice balls (onigiri) either which might’ve helped avoid wastefulness here instead? Dessert came decorated saying “Happy Birthday!” Thank you very much indeed—the black sesame ice cream tasted deliciously memorable! Breakfast offerings lacked warm side dishes slightly compared against expectations maybe? Arrival sweets included konpeito candies tasting delightful enough initially raising hopes further regarding subsequent room snacks availability later—but none existed disappointingly afterward unfortunately still though… Only two bottles worth drinking water provisioned inside rooms surprised given overall class-level pricing range comparatively speaking otherwise generally expected higher standards matching accordingly better ideally hoped-for experiences altogether likewise similarly related aspects surrounding other areas noticed inconsistencies observed meanwhile noted observations mentioned above previously stated comments shared feedback thoughts expressed opinions conveyed impressions summarized reflections written down recorded remarks detailed descriptions outlined     An Accommodation You'll Want to Visit Again and Again

    I have visited many Onsen, but the quality of the Onsen water here was exceptional—possibly the best I've experienced. The only downside was that the outdoor bath was too hot to stay in for long. The meals were perfect in terms of ingredients, portion size, and taste. The light seasoning with broth that brought out the natural flavors of the ingredients was especially delightful. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again. The staff's warm and attentive service was also excellent.

    I had a relaxing stay.

    It was a cozy accommodation, and we were soothed on the last day of our trip by the pleasant atmosphere of the room and delicious meals (the portions were just right for a couple in their 60s). We would love to stay again.

    This trip turned out to be a huge disappointment, wasting both time and money.

    Room: Limited explanation provided upon being shown to the room. Cleaning was insufficient (dead insects left behind, hair likely from previous guests in the toilet, dust accumulated on all ventilation fans). The screen door was poorly fitted, making it difficult to open and close. Only bath towels were provided, which was inconvenient. No bottled water or tea in the room (only water from a kettle). The welcome sweets were a few pieces of Kyoto-style sugar candy for some reason. Tea served was lukewarm. Room snacks included a cookie with an odd illustration and one piece of brown sugar candy. Service: Honestly, I would not want to stay here again. There was no sense of "hospitality" from the staff—just polite language without any genuine care or consideration for guests. They came across as cold and indifferent. Around 11 PM, while trying to sleep, neighboring guests began loudly using their private onsen attached to their room next door. Their outdoor bath is adjacent to our terrace with only one partition board separating us; thus, all noise and conversation could be heard clearly. Unable to bear the disturbance any longer, we requested staff intervention but saw no improvement in the situation. As sleeping became impossible due to noise levels near our terrace area beddings had been moved into smaller cramped spaces away further inside instead where rest finally occurred albeit uncomfortably so under such conditions overnightly thereafter morning breakfast preparations brought same personnel handling matters prior yet failed addressing complaints raised earlier requiring explanations repeated anew receiving dismissive responses like “Did you sleep well?” “Thank-you moving futons yourselves” etcetera lacking apologies altogether leaving sour impressions unresolved ultimately checkout process similarly devoid acknowledgment issues encountered throughout stay overall disappointing experience entirely regrettable occasion ruined special day plans completely unsatisfactory outcome overall

    I had a relaxing time.

    A nostalgic accommodation where I enjoyed a relaxing stay for one night. The staff were all friendly and welcoming with warm smiles. The room had just been renovated, making it spacious and clean. The most memorable part was the grilled matsutake mushroom served at dinner! Its rich flavor and aroma spread in my mouth, leaving me feeling so happy that I could have fallen asleep right then. Of course, other dishes like the simmered Joshu beef were also incredibly delicious—a true classic kaiseki experience. On the way back, I visited Nakanojo Gardens. If only the bus access to the gardens had been more convenient, it would have been a flawless trip. Nonetheless, many thanks to all the staff for their wonderful hospitality!

    I truly forgot the time and felt completely relaxed.

    I booked this plan because I wanted to enjoy the open-air cypress bath. I've stayed at several accommodations with rooms featuring open-air baths, but this one had the most rustic charm. Listening to the sound of the river and birdsong, I ended up soaking for a long time. The water quality was soft and very pleasant. The meal was a small portion plan, but it felt slightly more than average for us. Everything was delicious, and we felt bad leaving anything behind, so we finished everything except for some rice. The black sesame ice cream dessert was especially exquisite. The sake was also excellent, making it a truly satisfying experience. I rated the facility 4 because I thought having a sofa in the room would have been perfect. However, I definitely want to visit again. Thank you very much!
