    We are very satisfied.

It was a wonderful Ryokan in every respect—hospitality, open-air bath, and meals. I would stay here again.

This Accommodation offers excellent value for money.

The open-air bath in the Room called Keyaki is outstanding. The size, layout, and water temperature were all excellent. Dinner may not be extravagant, but the quality of the dishes and ingredients truly stands out, offering highly original Japanese cuisine that lets you appreciate its best qualities. There is also a wide selection of alcoholic drinks, which is a real treat for those who enjoy a drink. All the staff were cheerful and pleasant.

    It was good, but...

Once again, we had a truly relaxing stay, thanks to the warm and welcoming staff and the Room. However, one of our highlights here is the dining. Last time, every detail felt so thoughtful and considerate that it was comforting from the inside out. This time, that level of care didn’t come through as much, and it felt a bit more “wild,” which was disappointing. That said, the staff’s hospitality is genuinely wonderful.

    It was a relaxing accommodation.

I arrived about 30 minutes early without notifying the property. Since the Room was not ready, I took a walk for a while before checking in. Although this was my fault, there was what appeared to be a Yakult left in the refrigerator from the previous guest, and there was a light layer of dust on the shelf, which was disappointing. However, it is in a quiet location away from the Onsen town, the food was delicious, the bath temperature was just right, and it was a very relaxing Room. I would like to visit again.

Shima Onsen Tokiwasure no Yado Yoshimoto

We stayed for one night and two days at Tokiwasure no Accommodation Yoshimoto [Keyaki], in a Japanese-Western twin room with an open-air Onsen bath, choosing the smaller-portion Plan for senior couples. Even with the smaller-portion Plan, the amount was just right and we finished everything. For breakfast, they kindly made rice balls from what was left so we could take them with us. The bath temperature was perfect, and with a gentle May breeze we were able to relax in the large tub. There was also a terrace in front of the bedroom where we could feel the trees right before our eyes—it truly felt like time stood still. The bedroom was quiet, and two types of pillows (soft and firm) were provided, so we slept very comfortably.

    Birthday Trip

We stayed here for his birthday trip. They also prepared a surprise cake for us. In my email, I asked for it to be brought to the Room, but it was brought during dinner instead (lol). I learned that I should have called. Still, we were happy with the service! There were staff from overseas, and their Japanese was excellent—I could tell they had studied a lot. This is a Ryokan we’d love to visit again! I hope you’ll spend someone’s special occasion at Tokiwasure no Yado. He was very happy too, and we’re satisfied. Thank you very much!

    Bed Bugs and Follow-Up Measures

I booked on short notice for an impromptu trip and was lucky to find one Room available, so I stayed in early April. Only the Standard Plan was available, so I upgraded the dinner. I visited hoping at least to have a pleasant stay. I had no idea what I was about to experience. I hope the following is helpful. <What was good> - The approach to the Ryokan and the entrance were well maintained. - The foreign staff member in charge of my Room was sincere and courteous throughout. - The bath was comfortable. <What was bad> - Although I upgraded dinner, aside from the regular meal all that came out were a small amount of egg tofu and thin pork belly miso-yaki, presented as a “surprise” for some reason. It felt completely pointless, so I do not recommend upgrading the meal. My companion is a chef, which only made it more disappointing. - The futon bedding in the Room had very worn sheets with multiple holes as if they had been rubbed through. Perhaps this is unavoidable for a standard Room... - After waking from a nap past 1:30 a.m., I turned on the lights and found an adult bed bug on the tatami. Panicking, I took photos with my phone and confirmed it via Google image search. After securing clear evidence, I considered calling the front desk but hesitated to wake them late at night, so we searched the Room thoroughly ourselves. We found only one at that time, but we ultimately could not sleep until after 5:00 a.m. - Next we woke up at 8:00 a.m., immediately going into anxious “search mode” to see whether any bed bugs were around us. As expected, we found two more—this time by the pillow area and on the mattress futon. Unable to tolerate it any longer since it was already morning, I called reception. The first thing they said—calmly—was that they would send someone over but asked if it would be okay after things settled down because they were busy preparing breakfast. Shocked, I asked whether we should keep them alive in the Room until then; only then did they say sharply, “We’ll send someone right away!” A foreign staff member came promptly, but there was another one by the entrance of our Room as well. In an awful mental state we went to breakfast (a private room), where we found two more on that room’s shoji screen. - At checkout they comped one bottled beer and one glass of plum wine that we had ordered at dinner and said this was an apology and that they would bring in a contractor. However, there was no sincerity from reception in trying to understand what happened or what we experienced—no questions at all—just administrative handling of payment paperwork only. We were left speechless that this could be their response after bed bugs appeared during our stay.

    Hmm...

It wasn’t bad, but… if I had to rate it with stars, I’d say 3. Most of the staff at the Accommodation are foreigners. Their Japanese is fairly good, but there were a few moments where communication felt uncertain. The Room was clean, spacious, and comfortable, but when you open the window it faces what seems like a neighboring house, which takes away from the feeling of being at an Onsen. The bath itself felt great, but the view was disappointing. You can’t see the river, and since there was no snow falling, it felt like all you could see were bare trees right in front of you. Meals are brought to your Room one dish at a time. Because of that service is slow, and it’s unsettling that staff enter the Room repeatedly without knocking. If you write an Accommodation Review, you can check out one hour later. Even though I told them I would write and show the Review at payment time, they kept pressuring me multiple times from after dinner to write it quickly, which was disappointing. The lack of smooth communication in Japanese was also unfortunate. Overall it wasn’t bad, but if you ask whether I’d come back… I’m not sure.

    The food was delicious.

The food was very delicious. We chose in-Room dining, but since it was a course meal and each dish was served separately, staff came in and out frequently, which felt a bit unsettled. For the complimentary sake tasting after check-in, there was no particular guidance unless we asked, so we didn’t see anyone else trying it. I think it would be nice to mention it at check-in. Also—perhaps due to the area or the season—we were surprised by how many stink bugs appeared in the Room. That said, despite being an older building, it felt clean. We were also able to relax and unwind in the open-air bath in our Room. Thank you very much!

    It was good, though.

The in-room bath was spacious, and the water in the large public bath was also very nice. What was disappointing was that the air conditioner seemed old and made a lot of noise, so my wife ended up sleeping on the sofa. The samue loungewear also had noticeable fraying. The overall atmosphere was good, which made it a bit of a shame. The staff member who took care of our meals was good.

The staff provided very courteous service. The lighting and plant arrangements along the path from the parking lot to the Ryokan entrance created a wonderful atmosphere. Inside the Ryokan, each piece of decor was charming, and during my visit, there were many Christmas-themed items on display. The meals were absolutely delicious, offering a variety of ingredients prepared in different ways for both dinner and breakfast. The dishes had delightful aromas that made me excited as soon as they arrived at the table. The additional dishes we ordered were also excellent—definitely worth it! The portion sizes were just right—not too much—and I appreciated being able to choose from various types of sake cups; they were all so cute! Even the plates were adorable, making dining visually enjoyable as well. The Onsen was incredibly relaxing, and I liked that the loungewear provided was a two-piece set—it was surprisingly convenient! Yukata rentals were also available. Although I didn’t use the rental bicycles this time, it seemed like exploring nearby areas with them would be fun too. Thank you very much!

    Thank you very much.

I stayed for one night on November 7th. Unfortunately, as the organizer, I caught the flu and had to cancel my reservation, leaving only three of my friends to enjoy the stay. However, they told me about the exceptional hospitality they received. From the delicious meals to the thoughtful gestures from the hostess and even breakfast rice balls, they were delighted with this wonderful accommodation. It seems I made no mistake in choosing this place. I deeply regret not being able to go and feel so disappointed. I will definitely visit next time! Even if it's a solo trip next year, I'll be sure to come by. Thank you so much!

    A Moment to Forget Time

The room's setup and furnishings were wonderful. The spacious toilet, paper towel installation, and bathroom amenities created a comfortable space. The meals were all delicious, and although I chose the lighter portion option, it was more than enough to feel full. However, one disappointing point was the black stains around the metal fitting of the bathroom sink drain. Out of habit as a homemaker, I tried scrubbing it with a used toothbrush, and most of the stains came off... Is room cleaning inspection not being conducted? It concerned me.

    It was a great bath.

There are many foreign staff members, and their dedication to their work was impressive. However, depending on the direction the Ryokan aims for, more detailed guidance may be necessary if striving for a higher rank. Everyone is working so hard, so I believe they will respond positively!

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

We stayed at this accommodation for the first time during our annual trip with my husband. Everything about this accommodation was wonderful. We were especially impressed by the food, which was all incredibly delicious and very satisfying. The service was also extremely polite, allowing us to relax and feel at ease. Although it is a bit far, it is an accommodation we would love to visit again.

    The hot spring was excellent.

Enjoy the stunning autumn foliage and the soothing warmth of the Onsen. While the weather in the mountainous area was unpredictable with occasional rain, the provided electric bicycle was incredibly helpful. One area for improvement could be communication with foreign staff members. Although their hospitality is evident and their effort to learn Japanese in a short time is commendable, there were some challenges such as incorrect meal times being communicated or difficulty answering questions about local attractions and ingredients, which slightly impacted the overall experience. Having Japanese staff assist occasionally might enhance satisfaction in these areas. The meals were delicately seasoned, allowing us to fully enjoy the flavors of dashi and fresh ingredients. The aroma of matsutake mushroom rice was exceptional! It was also a nice touch that leftover rice was made into onigiri for us. The special "Take" Room did not offer scenic views but featured spacious guest and bath areas, making it perfect for a relaxing trip with friends after a long time apart. While one incense stick was provided, it would be great if more were available to mask slight odors from drains once it burned out. Amenities included POLA products and a Dyson hairdryer for added comfort. Despite concerns about overtourism elsewhere, Shima Onsen offered a quiet and relaxing atmosphere that we truly appreciated.

It was a very impressive Ryokan.

This was my first time using this accommodation. My first impression was that it is a small-scale accommodation with thoughtful measures to avoid contact with other guests, and meals were served in the room. I can't speak for others, but my wife was very satisfied. It was a wonderful ryokan where we could experience an extraordinary escape from daily life.

    Completely satisfied!

I made a reservation on the morning of the same day and departed around noon for my stay. I appreciate the accommodation for accepting same-day reservations despite the preparation required for meals. The food was absolutely wonderful, with each dish carefully crafted, leaving me feeling truly grateful. Speaking of gratitude, the staff, who were multinational, provided exceptional hospitality. It was heartwarming to see them working in a remote mountain area, striving to meet the expectations of Japanese guests. Their warm smiles made my stay incredibly pleasant. Soaking in the open-air bath while gazing at the mountain scenery completely cleared my daily fatigue. I rated the bath 4 stars because, as this is not a large accommodation, there were only three washing areas in the bath. If it coincides with other guests, it can feel a bit awkward waiting in close proximity. However, this is not a significant issue for me personally! The private bath is available for use whenever it's free, without the need for prior reservations, which is very convenient.

    First Visit to Shima Onsen

It was my first visit to Shima Onsen to see the beautiful Shima Blue. I chose to stay at Kagen, a small and cozy accommodation. The onsen bath was surrounded by blooming fragrant osmanthus and lush greenery, providing a relaxing and aromatic experience. The room was spacious, the meals were delicious, and I would love to return next autumn to enjoy the autumn foliage. Thank you to all the staff for your hospitality.

    I usually eat a lot,...

I usually eat a lot, but this time I chose a plan with smaller portions to match my wife. Even so, the meals for both breakfast and dinner were beautifully presented, satisfying, and very delicious. The accommodation was quiet, the room was spacious and comfortable, allowing us to relax fully. The female service staff who attended to us was very kind and provided excellent hospitality, making our stay even more relaxing. I would definitely consider staying again if given the opportunity. One small suggestion for improvement: it was raining when we arrived, and we had to walk down a gentle path from the parking lot to the accommodation. There was no one to greet us upon arrival, so it took some time to locate the entrance. While a greeting may not always be necessary, it would be helpful if umbrellas were placed in the gazebo at the parking lot on rainy days or if towels were provided during check-in for wiping wet bags or clothes. This would align well with your otherwise meticulous hospitality. Overall though, I give high marks for our stay—thank you very much!

    Thank you for your patronage.

I used to think there wasn't a quiet, cool Onsen close by in Gunma. I was wrong—there is. Shima Onsen isn't salty, but it's so relaxing that I kept getting in and out repeatedly. It's refreshing and cool, too. It's peaceful, and nearby Yamba Dam offers amazing grilled corn and corn soft serve ice cream. It's rare to find such a great place so close by. The accommodation, meals, and sake were excellent as well. I'll definitely visit again. Thank you very much!

    A quiet and charming...

A quiet and charming accommodation with a total of 8 rooms. One thing I noticed was the large public bath. I wasn't sure where to take off my slippers. Although there was a lovely basket for the bath in the room, it didn't fit on the narrow shelves in the public bath area. With only two hairdryers available, it might not be ideal for a girls' trip. Another point is about the pillows. Adjustable-height pillows would make sleeping more comfortable as I found them too high for me. The private dining area had a wonderful atmosphere, and all the staff were very attentive and pleasant, making my stay enjoyable. The room was clean, and the view of the mountains outside was stunning. While I shared some feedback, this is truly a lovely accommodation. Thank you very much!

    Seeking a Summer Retreat

I chose this accommodation for its pleasant atmosphere. Each dish was explained to us, and although the overall flavor was mild, it paired well with sake and was delicious. The meat at dinner was a bit tough... The private bath had a great ambiance, and I thoroughly enjoyed the onsen in a relaxed manner. Using the electric bicycles provided by the accommodation, we visited Shima Lake and were amazed by the stunning Shima Blue! This accommodation is perfect for an adult getaway.

A tranquil accommodation with the soothing sound of insects.

    ■ Pros - On a rainy day, the staff greeted us with umbrellas as we parked, which was a thoughtful gesture. - A secluded accommodation deep in the mountains, offering complete tranquility. Opening the window allowed us to enjoy the soothing sounds of a river and insects. - With only 8 rooms, the onsen was almost always private whenever we visited. While not very spacious, it had charm and character. Being open 24 hours allowed for multiple visits throughout our stay. - Dinner included a surprise dish of salt-grilled sweetfish (ayu). Each part—head, bones, and meat—had different seasonings, making it an elaborate and delightful dish. ■ Cons - The meals were average—not too simple but not luxurious either. The free space only offered barley tea; there was no coffee available in the morning or in the room. - While most staff members were very pleasant, only the hostess seemed unfriendly. After payment was completed, she returned to the back without any farewell or send-off—it felt lonely without proper goodbyes. - The 24-hour onsen appeared to lack thorough cleaning. - The room felt old with a retro Showa-era vibe around areas like the sink. Amenities were minimalistic as well. Instead of yukata robes for indoor wear, they provided samue outfits that resembled staff uniforms when worn. Compared to high-end accommodations I usually stay at, some shortcomings stood out; however, considering their limited staff efforts and overall pricing level, this accommodation felt reasonable for its cost value. Shima Onsen itself is wonderful—I’d love to visit again!

From start to finish, everything was excellent. The bath was amazing, the food was fantastic, and the staff were outstanding. I highly recommend visiting at least once. Accommodations with this level of satisfaction are rare. However, it is true that there aren't many notable sightseeing spots in Shima Onsen. If you're going just for the accommodation, it's perfect!

The service was excellent, and it was a stylish accommodation with a charming atmosphere.

With a limited number of rooms, the accommodation was quiet, and I could relax without encountering other guests in the bath. The meals served in the private room were of a very high standard with creative touches. The quality of breakfast was also exceptional. This is an accommodation I would like to revisit when coming to Shima Onsen.

The cuisine was fitting for an auberge, but...

A cozy Ryokan attracted us with its authentic cuisine, and we stayed for two nights. The dishes, true to the name of a Japanese-style auberge, were delicately seasoned and made with seasonal ingredients, offering a profound depth of flavor. A selection of delicious local sake was also available, so much so that it inspired us to visit the brewery the next day. They thoughtfully prepared substitutes for my allergies in advance, which was greatly appreciated. The facility overall was clean, and there were private baths available, making our Onsen experience very satisfying. In contrast, the guest room had an unpleasant smell resembling mold or urine from the entrance. We had to keep the windows open and use ventilation throughout our stay. While this might be attributed to its old-house charm, seeing that housekeeping brought in an air purifier on the second day suggests it may not have been a usual occurrence. Additionally, with futons being quite thin and uncomfortable ("senbei" style), I regretfully cannot say we were satisfied with our time spent in the room.

The Room was spacious and clean, and the bath in particular was distinctive and very nice. The food was also delicious; there were two meat dishes, and the portions were satisfying. Since this is an area we are not used to visiting, we arrived early, but due to heavy rain we ended up waiting in the car. If possible, it would have been even better if we could have waited inside the lobby.

    The private bath was excellent.

Standard rooms are not highly recommended. Reviews from guests who stayed in other rooms seemed better, but since the room doesn't have a private bath, you need to use the public bath or a private one. However, the public bath had floating insects, and the top of the changing shelves was dusty as if it hadn't been cleaned in ages. The bedroom smelled strongly of mold, which was quite unpleasant. There were cobwebs, and even the provided yukata-like attire smelled musty. The windows were dirty too. It might be worth paying a bit more for a better room. The smell made me feel unwell at times. There was an air purifier in the room, but it didn't seem to address these issues. I upgraded my meal plan, but I couldn't tell what was different from the standard menu. I don't think I'll return. Cleaning is definitely needed here—it would make such a difference! It was supposed to be for a special occasion, but I ended up feeling disappointed. Breakfast tasted good overall; however, portions were small and there were burnt bits on some rice dishes while miso soup wasn't hot enough. Thank you for your hospitality nonetheless!
