    The atmosphere of the main building is wonderful.

    The atmosphere of the main building was wonderful. Maintaining such a historic building must take a lot of effort, so I was pleasantly surprised by how clean and well kept it was. This time we chose the newer wing where we could enjoy the Onsen in our Room, but next time I would love to stay in one of the lovely Rooms in the main building, such as Sanraku or Kumoi. Dinner and drinks were delicious, and being able to enjoy them in our Room made it feel truly luxurious. All of the staff were genuinely kind and welcoming, and we made great summer memories. We will definitely come again.

    The Onsen was excellent.

    Perhaps because the building is old, there was a slight musty smell, but the Room was clean and the bath was very pleasant. Since the plumbing has just been renovated, I used the in-room bath many times. It was my first time visiting an Onsen in midsummer, but the water temperature had been adjusted so I could soak without feeling overheated. The meals were delicious, with rich dashi flavor. Because the building is old, it may be difficult for guests who are sensitive to odors, but even during Obon I hardly ran into other people except at breakfast. The staff kept a comfortable distance—attentive without being intrusive—and above all, spending time surrounded by nature felt truly worthwhile. My family also said we’d like to stay again.

    Wonderful Memories with Your Family

    It was our first family trip in six years. The Ryokan’s atmosphere, the meals, and the open-air bath in our Room were all outstanding. My family was very happy as well.

    It was excellent.

    We were completely satisfied with the Onsen, meals, futon bedding, and overall atmosphere. This is another place we’d love to visit again.

    Musty smell

    This is my first time posting a Review. However, I’m writing because I was genuinely shocked this time. First, when we were shown to our Room, the mold smell was very strong, and simply staying in the Room was unpleasant. Since we had a Multiple Night Stay, we asked the next day if there were any available Rooms to switch to, but there weren’t, so we had no choice but to stay. I have stayed at many Accommodations before, but this was the worst in many ways. The staff were careless. On the second night, there were fewer dishes at dinner, and for some reason they were served two at a time. Because the Facility is huge, cleaning does not seem thorough. The private family bath felt too retro—dark and honestly scary. The changing area was like a steam room and felt like torture. The hot spring water itself is good, but the ceiling of the large public bath was dirty with what looked like mold or something similar. Being there was so stressful that it felt unbearable unless we tried to mentally shut everything out—this kind of Accommodation is truly a first for us. I can’t understand how other Reviews give it 5 stars.

    It was soothing and gave me time to reflect.

    We were able to spend a very quiet and relaxing one-night stay at Shunkei-so, with the end of the rainy season just around the corner. I have visited Gero Yunoyakata twice before, and this third visit was my first in 28 years. Its unchanged atmosphere brought back fond memories of when we stayed here as three generations for my father’s 60th birthday celebration 28 years ago. This time also marked a milestone for me, having passed my father’s age at that time, and it became a new memory for us as a couple. To everyone at Gero Yunoshimakan, please welcome us again with the same service, the same hospitality, and the timeless charm of this historic place. My spouse and I—and even our children and grandchildren—will continue to return to this Accommodation as a place filled with cherished memories. Thank you very much.

    The building is truly lovely.

    This was my first time in Gero Onsen, and after comparing several options, I chose this place. The Onsen was wonderful, and the building itself was truly impressive. The stamp rally around the property was really fun. If you collect the stamps, you receive a complimentary drink at the bar called Moonlight, so we took advantage of that as well. A staff member kindly explained the Room furnishings in detail and even took photos for us. Highly recommended. This time we had our meals served in our Room, and our attendant was from Myanmar. She was very sweet, always smiling, and worked hard—she made a great impression. Please pass along our thanks. Maybe we were lucky with the timing, but we had the large public bath almost to ourselves, and it felt much bigger than it looks in photos. We also enjoyed the silky-smooth spring water in the bath in our Room. The view was lovely too. Both dinner and lunch were excellent, with great portions and flavor. Hida beef really is delicious. The rice “Dragon’s Eye” (Ryuno Hitomi) was outstanding. The braised pork at breakfast was also delicious. It’s a bit far from Tokyo, but both the Onsen and atmosphere are wonderful, so I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Rich in history, but…

    The building is historic and charming, and the hot spring water quality was excellent. However, the musty smell in the Room was overwhelming! The odor even transferred to my brand-new fabric travel bag (it came out after airing it out for a few days). The slippers were old and difficult to walk in, so I twisted my ankle and got injured. Dinner service also took a very long time. The bed and pillows were of a quality I would not expect from a long-established Ryokan, and they were very uncomfortable to sleep on. I question whether it is appropriate to use a Room with such a musty odor.

    The elementary school kids loved it too.

    In this historic building, even the children seemed to enjoy it with a sense of adventure. The overall layout, including the Room, was spacious and relaxing; although it is old, it felt clean and open. The view from the Room was wonderful, and the meals were delicious.

    The food was delicious, and the view from the large public bath was wonderful. The fresh greenery was beautiful, and I’m sure the autumn leaves will be stunning as well. I’d love to visit again around that time.

    The meals are absolutely outstanding!

    To celebrate our Ruby anniversary, we first enjoyed French cuisine at a Hotel in Ise-Shima that we visited on our honeymoon, and then stayed here the next day. Honestly, since the Onsen was our main purpose and we had indulged in a lavish meal the day before, we didn’t place much importance on the food—but to our surprise, every dish in the “Spring Kaiseki” course was outstanding: the appetizer, assorted starters, soup, and even grilled sushi (my first time trying it). Everything was wonderful—possibly the best we’ve ever had. We truly enjoyed a blissful time. Thank you so much to the head chef and everyone on your team.

    The food and the bath were excellent.

    From the moment we arrived at the parking lot, we were welcomed by smiling staff. The bath and the food were both excellent. We caused inconvenience by being late for mealtime, but you still provided attentive service with a smile. Thank you very much for everything.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    I stayed with three friends. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The Room had a private open-air bath, so we could relax and unwind. We contacted the front desk several times, and they responded kindly each time. It was also lovely to see fresh flowers arranged in the Room and along the hallways. We had a wonderful holiday and would love to visit again when we have the chance. Thank you very much.

    It was a great accommodation.

    Because it is a Tangible Cultural Property, I worried the Facility might be old and uncomfortable, or that it might be too far for strolling around... but all my worries were unfounded. The Room was nicely warm, the futon was very comfortable, and the kaiseki in the light-meal course was truly just the right amount—I even managed to finish the final rice dish, which I usually can’t. And the retro dance hall and bar were wonderful!

    First time in three years: Gero Onsen without snow

    This was my third New Year’s Day visit in three years, and the first time I’ve visited on a snow-free New Year’s Day. My favorite Room, “Kumoi-no-Ma,” now has tatami on the veranda, and the wood in the private indoor bath has been beautifully renewed. The view remains outstanding as always. Dinner is now served in a private dining room rather than in the Room, but the quality and taste of the food were just as excellent as before. However, it was disappointing that the dining staff were non-Japanese even though they wore traditional Japanese attire. At a Japanese Accommodation, I would like to enjoy conversation with Japanese staff. I understand that inbound tourism may require international staff, but I hope Japanese guests can be welcomed by Japanese staff. Also, small animals were running around in the attic above my Room at night and woke me up repeatedly. Please take care of pest control as well.

    Autumn leaves seem to fall all around you!

    I stayed here with my daughter’s family. I was truly impressed by and grateful for everything—the building, the baths, the cuisine, and the hospitality. Since we were traveling with our grandchild, I was a little worried about staying at such a distinguished Ryokan, but thank you very much for preparing a private room for dinner. We were able to relax and enjoy ourselves without any hesitation. It was the autumn foliage season, and both the garden and the neighboring Onsen-ji Temple were wonderful. Our grandchild seemed to have a great time with the stamp rally. It was my first time tasting such delicious amago trout. Thank you very much.

    A wonderful Ryokan where you can feel the history

    This is a wonderful Ryokan with a truly historic atmosphere. Just strolling around the building was highly satisfying, and our stay flew by. The Onsen was, as expected, excellent—I ended up soaking many times. However, we requested a birthday cake, and the message plate was made of paper with the requested text handwritten in black pen... The cake itself was also quite simple. It’s such a lovely Ryokan that could easily compete as a luxury property, so we would be even happier if items like cakes were prepared in a way more fitting for the Accommodation. It’s an Accommodation where guests would likely agree even if the room rates were raised further, so thank you in advance for your consideration.

    We had a wonderful experience.

    Although this was a last-minute trip, it turned out to be an even more wonderful experience than we had expected. We knew it was a cultural property, but seeing it in person was truly moving. Even though it was just the two of us traveling as adults, we got completely absorbed in the stamp rally inside the building. The Onsen were all relaxing—the private open-air bath in our clean room and the reservable private baths. The meals were also excellent. I wanted to try the Chinese-style ramen at night as well, but I was too full to eat any... All of the staff were polite and kind, and their warm hospitality made us feel very comfortable. We’d love to enjoy it again on our next visit! Thank you for a truly soothing getaway.

    It was a wonderful Accommodation with a real sense of history.

    Yunoshimakan was a truly wonderful Accommodation with a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. We visited in early September and the air conditioning was just manageable, but in midsummer—and especially in winter—it may be quite challenging. Spring with fresh greenery and autumn foliage are recommended. Still, it was an Accommodation experience you can’t easily have elsewhere, and we were very satisfied.

    This charming, retro...

    This charming, retro-style Ryokan had a wonderful atmosphere, and we really enjoyed the stamp rally inside the Facility. The hand-drawn Ryokan map we received was also fun. The Room was very clean, and the staff were polite and attentive, which helped us relax. We would love to stay again if we have the chance. One small disappointment was that there were several insects floating in the open-air bath of the large public bath. I understand it may be difficult, but I would be happy if this could be improved.

    It was excellent.

    This was my first time staying here. The staff's hospitality was excellent. Being located on a hill, the view was beautiful, and both the meals and the bath were outstanding. The room and hallways were well-cleaned, making it feel like a very nice accommodation. As it is an older ryokan, there was a fair distance to walk to the large public bath, but my mother with leg issues found it good for rehabilitation, so that turned out well too. Our whole family agrees—we would love to stay here again!

    Excellent building and service

    I stayed at the main building for one night and two days. The building, full of atmosphere, was as wonderful as rumored. It was also well-maintained, which made my stay highly satisfying. Additionally, all the staff were naturally cheerful and communicated effectively, providing excellent hospitality. If I had to point out a downside, it would be that there were quite a few insects in the changing room of the large public bath, likely coming from the open-air bath—though this might be somewhat unavoidable due to the season. It would be great if measures like installing insect-repellent lights at entrances could be considered. This was my first visit to Gero Onsen, but both the accommodation and town had such a fantastic atmosphere that I definitely want to visit again!

    The Onsen is excellent.

    This was my second visit to Gero Onsen, and the Onsen was absolutely fantastic. Yunoshimakan provided excellent rooms, meals, and service. I would love to visit again soon!

    First Time at Gero Onsen

    From the warm welcome to the heartfelt farewell, this Ryokan provided an incredibly satisfying experience! The rice served at dinner was a chewy and delicious variety called "Dragon's Eye," similar to glutinous rice. Everything else we had was also exceptionally tasty. On April 11th, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and spending two days in such a historic building created unforgettable memories for us as a couple.

    Accommodation for Three Generations

    We stayed at this accommodation with three generations of our family, fulfilling my mother's long-held wish. Since it was close to my parents' wedding anniversary, we arranged for a cake in advance. The cake was brought out during dinner, and we also received a gift from the accommodation, which made them very happy. The next morning at breakfast, due to having connecting rooms, we relaxed in our room until the last minute before heading to the adjacent room. However, there was an issue that delayed breakfast by about 30 minutes. We were then guided to another room on a different floor where we had breakfast instead. While it was understandable as preparations were rushed, the room was cold and disappointing. That said, the manager apologized multiple times and showed genuine sincerity. There were some moments that surprised us—like finding hardened rice grains stuck on a dish or tea that tasted as thin as hot water—but overall, the onsen facilities including foot baths and views were excellent. The dinner menu was outstanding as well. If given another opportunity, I would like to stay in a different room next time!

    The kaiseki dinner is exceptional.

    We enjoyed the Spring Kaiseki with the Carefully Selected Gourmet Plan. The dishes were elegantly seasoned to enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients, and the portions were just right. The meal was served in our Room, allowing us to savor it comfortably with just the right amount of privacy and attentive service.

    Spirited Away

    I stayed for one night in a room at Sanrakuso. As a fan of retro architecture, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the facility while participating in a stamp rally. The large public bath was great, but the private bath in the room was exceptional. It left my skin feeling smooth and moisturized. Although the building is old, it was impeccably clean, allowing for a very comfortable stay. The hotel staff were very friendly, and the meals were absolutely delicious. However, since the accommodation is surrounded by nature, leaving windows open even slightly can let insects inside, which was a bit unsettling for someone like me who isn't fond of bugs. For those who dislike insects, I recommend keeping windows closed during your stay. Despite this minor issue, it was such a wonderful accommodation that I would love to visit again!
