A summer favorite you’ll want to make a tradition.

This was our seventh destination on our classic hotel tour. To be honest, among the classic hotels, we thought Kawana would be a “maybe if we can,” but we made a Reservation hoping to enjoy the pool during the Obon holidays. Now that our stay is over, it was so wonderful that we want to come to Kawana Hotel every summer. One thing we had researched in advance was the omurice said to have been eaten by Marilyn Monroe, and we knew we couldn’t miss it—so we went for lunch right after arrival. We enjoyed a relaxed meal at Sun Parlor in a beautiful setting with ocean views. We also had shaved ice at Sun Parlor. With condensed milk and honey harvested from beekeeping at Kawana, we changed the flavor ourselves with each bite and had fun tasting it different ways. Another highlight was the movie screening held in the second lobby at night. The film that day was Roman Holiday. Combined with the classic atmosphere of our Room, it felt like it created a truly special summer night. Since the pool and baths can be enjoyed even after check-out, we went back to the pool on day two as well. The natural spring water pool was very cold and refreshing; lying on a poolside bed with views of blue skies and the sea, listening to the splash of water, felt absolutely perfect. All of the staff were very kind. Compared with other classic hotels, this one felt especially welcoming, making for a stay that brought back nostalgic summer memories. We’d love to visit again next summer.

    A refined Facility

Unlike many places these days that only try to look luxurious, this is a truly refined Hotel. As it is a golf resort, it may feel a bit exclusive. It may seem expensive for the average traveler, but the service and Facility more than make up for it. Highly recommended.

    Enjoy Summer in Kawana

We enjoy the pool and Onsen, and we look forward to spending summer at Kawana Hotel twice every year. This time the temperature was a bit low, but we still had a wonderful time. Thank you very much.

This is a repeat stay, and it’s still one of the best Hotels.

We came to Kawana Hotel again this summer. We often spend summer in Okinawa or Atami/Izu, but Kawana Hotel is a must for us. First, the pool. It’s completely different from other hotels that smell strongly of chlorine. Our family has the best time playing with our kids in this pool. And then the food. Cakes and shaved ice at Sun Parlor are a daily highlight. This year we had a Plan that included shaved ice, so we enjoyed it at a great value! The Western-style breakfast is excellent, and we never get tired of dinner at the grill because there are so many options. Also, the summer festival games are another highlight—our kids look forward to them every year. The young male staff were kind, and our child kept playing the shooting game over and over. And finally, the service. There seemed to be staff from Korea, but they were just as courteous as Japanese staff—I could really feel how thoroughly service training is carried out here. A tall male staff member also handled our request about a noisy Room sincerely, which made us even bigger fans of Kawana Hotel! We’ll be back!!

    We had a wonderful staycation.

This was the last Hotel on my classic Hotel tour. At check-in, I was told a larger Room was available and kindly upgraded (thank you). What I felt during my stay is that a Hotel is all about the people. The staff’s hospitality was wonderful, and in particular, the smiles of the young female employees were lovely. The Onsen while looking out at the sea was very relaxing, and being able to watch the sunrise from the bath was an incredibly luxurious experience. As for drawbacks: the Wi-Fi signal was weak and I noticed it had disconnected; breakfast was tasty, but I didn’t feel it matched the price; and since it was during summer vacation season, I was bothered by some families’ poor manners. The night pool bar under a starry sky was also great, so next time I’d like to visit in the off-season.

    Authentic

Understated tradition—more heritage than luxury, with a comfortable, fitting atmosphere. Service is not overly formal, and there’s an easygoing feel typical of a golf resort. The interior remains unchanged from older photos, giving you a real sense that you are experiencing the Hotel’s history. Hot-spring Facility The men’s bath does not have an ocean view, but the expansive greenery can be seen without fences, creating an open and refreshing feel. Dining Classic and comforting rather than complex—somehow nostalgic. Depending on your taste it may feel rustic, but that is part of its charm.

Stunning architecture and dinner, but disappointing service

I have stayed at many Hotels over the years as an IKYU Diamond member, but I have rarely posted a Review. This time, the gap I felt between the magnificent architecture and the level of service was simply too great, so I am leaving these comments in the hope of future improvement. I revisited Kawana Hotel after it joined SLH, expecting world-class quality. As a fan of classic Hotels, I completed my first “Japan Classic Hotel Association” passport and am now on my second, with this being my seventh stay. I always choose each Hotel’s signature Room, and this time as well I made a Reservation for an appropriate Room. When I arrived early on the 13:00 shuttle bus from Ito Station, unlike the recent trend among luxury Hotels to offer flexible guidance, I was told in a perfunctory manner to “return to reception again at 15:00.” At the Sun Parlor where I waited until check-in, there was no seating guidance and I had to seat myself. The table had no placemat or tablecloth—not even a single flower—and only disposable paper napkins were provided, creating a stark atmosphere. With operations limited to taking orders and serving dishes, it did not feel comfortable enough to justify Japan’s top-tier 15% Service Fee. In addition, there was poor upkeep: a large stain remained on the fabric lampshade in my Room. Given that it is otherwise a wonderful Room with a spacious terrace facing Sagami Bay, this was especially disappointing. When I asked about paid late check-out until shuttle bus departure time, despite an average weekday room rate of around JPY 70,000 per night (approx.), I was quoted JPY 15,000 per hour—an extremely expensive fee—and again there was no sense of hospitality that considers the guest. Dinner in the main dining room featured beautiful table settings along with traditional hotel cuisine and attentive service; it felt worth paying the 15% Service Fee. However, this dinner was the only meal that felt high in quality; other meals seemed merely average. It is disappointing that guest comments left during my previous stay were not reflected on site. This time as well, I left specific feedback at checkout. The manager came to greet me as I was leaving; however, since my bus departure time was approaching we could speak only briefly. I have deep respect for your sincere efforts to preserve and maintain this historic building. I hope for fundamental improvements in quality—at the Sun Parlor, in Rooms, and across overall operations—befitting an SLH member Hotel.

    Another truly wonderful stay

This was my second stay, returning to collect a stamp for the Classic Hotel Passport. My previous visit was also in June two years ago, and once again it was a wonderful stay during the beautiful season of fresh greenery. It seems the Room has been renovated, and it was much more beautifully maintained than when I last visited. For that reason, I gave full marks—five stars across the board this time. For meals, we had Japanese cuisine for dinner and Western-style breakfast. Since we skipped lunch, I got quite hungry after being picked up at Ito Station at 1:00 p.m. and then relaxing in the hot-bathing Facility called Brisa Marina. Because last orders at the grill are at 3:00 p.m., we had a Japanese lunch there—and I was pleasantly surprised by how reasonably priced it was for a Hotel lunch. Although it was Japanese cuisine, they even brewed coffee for us after the meal; it was wonderfully aromatic and delicious. All three meals were truly excellent—exactly what you would expect from a Hotel. The spectacular view from Brisa Marina and the refreshing breeze true to its name were incredibly pleasant, and as always, the staff were full of hospitality. It made for another truly lovely stay. When you complete the Classic Hotel Passport, you receive a voucher for one free night’s stay, and my spouse and I have been talking about coming back to Kawana Hotel to experience this wonderful stay again. Thank you very much for taking such great care of us.

    An Otherworldly Realm

A must-stay Hotel for classic Hotel lovers—everything was outstanding: the architecture, the staff, and even the Shuttle Service driver’s smooth driving made us feel completely at ease. A female front desk staff member had read my notes and kindly changed our Room for us; I truly appreciated her thoughtfulness. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and stunning to look at. We made a dinner Reservation for the 11th at 17:30, and a female staff member complimented my shoes—thanks to that, our conversation really took off and it was such a lovely time (I’ll keep her name private). The café was also excellent; I ordered shortcake and iced tea, and they were superb—beautiful as well. The interior felt like a dream space: wonderful furnishings, cute typography on the signage, stained glass, lighting—absolutely mesmerizing. The Onsen left my skin feeling soft and silky. I’m glad we could also climb up to the observatory. From our Room we enjoyed views of islands, sky, sea, and greenery—so open and refreshing—and seeing the sunrise up close was incredible. It became a perfect memory for our 36th wedding anniversary. Thank you very much for two wonderful days.

    We enjoyed some tea.

Just as reputed and exactly as expected, we enjoyed a comfortable and luxurious stay. Except for one thing. I was so disappointed that I decided to write about it. This happened at the restaurant. I ordered tea, and it was served on my companion’s right side, but the staff member stood on the guest’s left side and performed the entire service with their right hand. Each time they set down the cup and each time they poured tea from the pot into the cup, their right arm passed directly in front of my companion’s face. Neither of us could speak—we were shocked. I felt this was unacceptable service etiquette for Kawana Hotel. It was truly disappointing. Aside from this “incident,” everything was comfortable.

A Journey with the Classic Passport

We stayed in the Main Building Ocean View Deluxe Twin to refresh and celebrate our wedding anniversary. The fluffy bed, the ocean view stretching out through the large window, and relaxing on the balcony felt like a dream. We also took our time enjoying each piece of decor throughout the Accommodation. We ordered room service for dinner, and the staff member’s humorous conversation and gentlemanly manner made it an even more memorable part of our trip. Breakfast was delicious as well, enjoyed while looking out at the sea. While waiting for the return shuttle bus in the lounge, a live piano-and-vocal performance began, and when Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” was played, I was moved to tears—so glad we came.

    This is not a Hotel.

Stayed here as part of the Japan Classic Hotel stamp rally. To sum it up: the building is magnificent, but the service level is the lowest among Japan Classic Hotels. As the newest of the existing classic hotels, it remains close to its original condition, and I wanted to enjoy its grand atmosphere. I chose a Main Building, ocean-side Deluxe Premium Twin with a large balcony. There were no issues at all with the Room interior or the building itself. I rated the Onsen 3, but that’s purely my personal view: it was neither particularly good nor bad as an Onsen, and the view wasn’t great. The public bath interior is also impressive. In terms of facilities alone, it’s undoubtedly top-class among classic hotels. What ruins these excellent facilities is everything on the service side. Even arriving by car, there was no guidance; even after unloading suitcases at the entrance, no one directed us to reception. The front desk explanation felt oddly minimal—basically just meal times—and had a gloomy vibe like an old run-down Business Hotel. I had booked a dinner course, but in the basement grill a group of golfers were having a loud party. I thought it might be because it wasn’t in the dining room—but at breakfast in the dining room next morning, four people at a table behind us (a snack bar hostess and her customers) were loudly making crude jokes. The final straw was lunch at the grill: as soon as another group of four arrived for what seemed like a business golf outing, they switched into izakaya mode—ordering octopus wasabi and beer and talking loudly. Staff did nothing to stop this and simply let it happen; this lack of refinement and discomfort seems to be everyday life here regardless of whether you’re in the dining room or grill. I understand that golfers are important customers for this Hotel—but please also recognize that some guests come expecting classic-hotel elegance. Even in the shop there are golf goods, but none of what other classic hotels offer—original coffee blends or books/materials about their history—and nothing related to this Hotel itself. It would be nice to see efforts aimed at hotel fans too—for example selling items like their original red bath mat used in Rooms. I heard that before bankruptcy both golf courses could only be used by overnight guests. The original concept should have been that golf was merely an amenity attached to the Hotel—not its main focus. That has disappeared now; this place has become “a large historic clubhouse attached to a golf course.” This isn’t a hotel.

    The Best Memories!

We stayed here for a golf trip (Fuji and Oshima) and overnight accommodation. We chose an ocean-view Room and were able to see an amazing sunrise. Everything was excellent—the restaurant, the lounge meals, and the staff’s hospitality. The Onsen was also clean and wonderful. The golf course was challenging, but the scenery was outstanding. We would love to stay again.

As expected of a classic Hotel.

I had long been interested in staying here because Marilyn Monroe once stayed here, and I was delighted that I finally got the chance to visit. The setting is both elegant and modern, the meals were carefully prepared and delicate, and even the staff’s service was impeccable—I can’t find words beyond “outstanding.” Although I was traveling alone, I was able to relax completely and was very satisfied. I recommended it to my friends as well, and they said they would love to go. Thank you very much.

    The service was wonderful.

The lobby had a wonderful atmosphere, creating a relaxing and pleasant stay. The rooms are older, but they were clean and comfortable. Above all, the staff provided excellent service. Even when I made several requests at the front desk, they handled everything kindly and without hesitation. Thank you very much.

A charming building and friendly staff.

This was the third stop on my classic Hotel tour. The charming atmosphere of the historic building was wonderful. While I was exploring the Hotel, a staff member kindly explained the building’s history, which made the visit even more enjoyable. If you request it at the time of Reservation, it seems that an in-house tour may be available depending on the date. For dinner, I chose the recreated historical menu—everything was delicious, and I especially loved the dessert flambéed right in front of me. After dinner at the main bar, I enjoyed an original cocktail and heard stories from the bartender about what drinks the founder used to like—it was a truly pleasant time. Everyone on staff—from reception to the shop and restaurant—was friendly, and although I stayed only one night, it was one of my most enjoyable Hotel stays in a long time. Once I finish my classic Hotel tour, I’d love to visit again.

    All meals included.

I believe a trip’s satisfaction depends on the meals. The Room also lacked any classic charm, so it was disappointing and did not meet my expectations for enjoying a classic Hotel. This Hotel seems geared toward guests using the golf facilities. I was astonished at the price for that level of dining.

It was a truly relaxing stay.

This time I arrived by public transportation, and the complimentary Shuttle Service was incredibly convenient, making it easy to get here smoothly even without a car. The first thing that impressed me upon arrival was the lobby, with its high ceilings and an overwhelming sense of openness. It was a busy time with golfers and guests, but thanks to the spacious layout I hardly felt any crowding and could fully enjoy how comfortable the lobby space was. The Room was a twin and generously sized, and I was truly happy to find that items such as beer in the refrigerator were complimentary—it felt like a thoughtful touch from the Hotel. At night, I borrowed some guest loan items and watched the stars from the front garden; it was only for a short while, but I managed to spot Orion. When returning them, a staff member kindly asked, “Were you able to see the stars?” which made my stay even more memorable. For breakfast this time I chose the Western set. I enjoyed an exceptional meal—an omelet beautifully stamped with the Hotel logo and rich juice—truly a blissful moment. We were also blessed with great weather and could enjoy early-blooming cherry blossoms, making it a perfect holiday where I could savor time passing at an unhurried pace to my heart’s content. Every staff member’s words were warm and welcoming. This is a wonderful Hotel that makes me want to return in another season. Thank you very much.

    Classic Hotel Passport: Second Stay

This stay was to complete the second round of stamps for the Classic Hotel Passport. I stayed in 2019 to earn the first round of stamps and had a very good impression, so I came with high expectations. It had been a while since my last visit, but this time felt quite different from before. First, I truly appreciated the Room upgrade. However, after check-in there was no escort to the Room and no explanation of where the elevator was, so I ended up carrying my luggage myself. At a Hotel of this level, I found that unacceptable. The Room was spacious and comfortable, and I was satisfied. The bath facilities were as satisfying as last time. The Facility is clean and spacious; it feels modern for an Onsen and I like it very much. I also enjoyed relaxing in the open-air bath while watching the sunrise. The magnificent scenery is truly appealing. For dinner, we used the main dining room last time, but this time we were placed in the basement grill—perhaps due to our Plan. As I had felt at breakfast on my previous stay, the grill space itself feels plain and chilly, and dinner did not reflect what makes a classic hotel special. Breakfast was in the main dining room; with good weather, we were able to enjoy a relaxed meal. Also, while staff were friendly during my previous stay, this time they felt more businesslike. Since this is not a city Hotel, I would have appreciated warmer hospitality toward all guests. I understand that a Hotel’s positioning can change with social conditions, but for a classic hotel I hope it will not change too much. That said, what people look for in a Hotel varies by person—please also refer to other Reviews and opinions.

It was an unforgettable stay in many ways.

During the record-breaking heavy snowfall on the Izu Peninsula, I worried we might not even make it to the Hotel, but we were still able to fully enjoy the Onsen, breakfast, and the building’s classic atmosphere. We are truly grateful for your help and hospitality. Seeing Kawana Hotel covered in snow was probably a rare sight. We took lots of photos. Your flexible support is something only a long-established Hotel can provide. I imagine it must have been very challenging for your staff during such heavy snow, yet you never let it show—truly professional service. We had a very pleasant stay. Thank you very much.

    A Sophisticated Social Venue

My first impression was how efficient and attentive the staff were. Since I decided to stay on short notice, I walked about 30 minutes from Kawana Station to the Hotel. I enjoyed exploring an unfamiliar area and felt excited under the moonlight reflecting off the seaside. Arriving at the Hotel, I was thrilled that my Room had an ocean view. I also woke up early to enjoy the Onsen right up until just before check-out.

    Kawana Hotel in Winter Scenery

Although we stayed during snowy weather, the attentive service, including the Shuttle Service, made our stay very comfortable. This was my fifth classic Hotel, and it was the best. Tea time in the Sun Parlor came with a snowy view; the cake was delicious and it felt wonderfully elegant. We chose Japanese cuisine for both dinner and breakfast, and both were excellent. The Onsen was spacious and spotless—like a luxury spa in Tokyo. The rare snowy scenery and sunrise were beautiful, and I would love to see them again. Thank you very much for a wonderful 1-night, 2-day stay.

    Classic Hotel

I stayed as part of the Classic Hotel Passport stamp rally. The main lobby was particularly impressive, with a stunning view of the ocean reminiscent of a tropical paradise through the large front windows. The fireplace, lighting, and furnishings have been beautifully maintained since the hotel's founding, which was truly moving. You can catch glimpses of the charm of bygone eras throughout the hotel. The famous Sun Parlor offers a bright space with blue tones in contrast to the grand lobby, and enjoying tea time while gazing at the ocean was wonderful. The Room has been renovated, so it doesn't feel very classic but features an ocean view and blue tones that create a very pleasant atmosphere. The complimentary fridge stocked with coffee and tea was also a much-appreciated service. As "curry rice" is famous at Classic Hotels, I ordered it via room service—it was mildly spiced European-style curry with generous chunks of meat and absolutely delicious. Being able to enjoy both a large public bath and an infinity open-air bath overlooking the sea at this Classic Hotel feels like such a treat! Watching sunrise from there is especially magical—highly recommended even if you have to wake up early! (It was cloudy during my stay so I watched it from my Room instead, but it was still lovely.) The hotel staff were incredibly kind as well. While most guests seemed to be there for golf, simply relaxing while gazing at the sea without doing anything else could be just as enjoyable! Coincidentally, some beautiful winter cherry blossoms were in full bloom during my visit.

    At the Classic Hotel

The view from the bath was wonderful. The view from the Hotel was also truly beautiful because the weather was nice. Three of us stayed in one Room, but I didn’t know that, as part of the service, only two bottles of water are provided per Room, so I felt a bit disappointed. Also at dinner, the dishes were served at a good pace up to a point, but then there was a long gap in service. While waiting, I ended up getting full, so I couldn’t enjoy the latter part of the meal all the way to the end, which was also disappointing. If window seats are available during times when you can enjoy the view, I think it would make for an even better memory if guests were proactively offered window-side seating whenever possible at any dining venue.

    Keep up the great work!

Despite spending a significant amount, including golf, the satisfaction level was low. Positive aspects: ◯ Scenery (breathtaking views) ◯ Green (golf course) ◯ Retro-style Facility (though it feels underutilized) However, the staff lacked smiles, appeared gloomy, and did not convey kindness or friendliness. (There were some pleasant individuals, but overall—including the golf clubhouse—there were very few. Isn't Kawana supposed to be a course Japan takes pride in?) It felt like staying just once doesn't warrant attention. If that's the case, please refrain from listing on IKYU.com.

    Quiet and comfortable.

The accommodation was beautifully decorated for the Christmas season, creating a festive and elegant atmosphere. Combined with its classic charm, it was truly delightful. The cakes displayed through the window looked so tempting that I couldn't resist enjoying tea at the sun parlor. For dinner, we were told we would be contacted as soon as a table became available, and we were grateful to be seated relatively early. The Noël dinner was satisfying in both volume and content—we thoroughly enjoyed it at a relaxed pace. The bathing facility was refreshing, and in the morning, we had the pleasure of watching the sunrise. The view from the top floor was also stunning, making this trip to complete our classic hotel collection truly memorable. Thank you very much!
