    Ruined at the end.

The Hotel itself was excellent, just as its reputation suggests, but the service at checkout was poor. At check-in, there were three counters and no waiting time; at checkout, there was only one counter, and making guests wait seemed to be considered normal. It is disappointing because everything else was wonderful.

    Authentic Luxury

The building is old, but it is a masterpiece by architect Togo Murano. It is well maintained and thoroughly cleaned down to every detail, making it a very pleasant space. The staff are excellent as well, and it was clear that everyone takes pride in their work. The meals were outstanding; enhanced by sauces incorporating ingredients from Ise-Shima, we truly enjoyed them. Living in Tokyo made the round trip feel long, but we would definitely like to visit again.

    A Birthday Celebration Trip

Every year, I stay at my favorite Hotel, Shima Kanko Hotel, to celebrate my birthday. My number one reason is the overwhelmingly memorable, wonderful cuisine!! And the extraordinary hotel experience. Every time, even after I return home, I keep savoring the afterglow. Saying things like “That was delicious,” “We really got to relax,” and “Let’s have a great year again,” makes me want to do my best so we can celebrate at Shima Kanko Hotel again next year. All of the staff are warm and welcoming with bright smiles. It became a truly wonderful day!! Thank you very much. Oh—and every year I also look forward to relaxing by the pool, but this year it rained for the first time, which was disappointing. We were also hoping to do some stargazing; since it was before Tanabata, we were excited to see if we could spot the Milky Way—but unfortunately not this time either. I hope we can see it next year.

    We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

This is the Hotel my wife’s parents stayed at on their honeymoon long ago, and I’d always wanted to stay here at least once. The Room had been perfectly renovated and was very clean. We arrived early, so we were able to relax in the lounge. The sweets in the lounge were delicious too, which made us very happy. Having French cuisine at La Mer while watching the sunset was truly wonderful. It was my first time eating abalone that tender. We’d love to stay again.

A Long-Awaited Visit to the Shrine

Before COVID, I used to stay here every year at the end of the year, but this time it had been a while.\nThe service was as hospitable as ever, though it felt like it has become a bit more modern.\nThese days, not being overly attentive seems to be the trend,\nbut I prefer a classic style,\nso it may have felt slightly lacking.\nIt’s not any one thing in particular—more the wording and the way things were handled.\nAs someone who also works in the service industry, it made me reflect on how to express genuine hospitality from the heart.\nThere was no information about Wi-Fi, which is unusual these days.\nStill, I relaxed fully—watching the moon from the lounge at night\nand listening to Japanese bush warblers in the morning.\nIt’s still a Hotel I truly love,\nand a wonderful place I can confidently recommend to dear friends.\nI’ll be back again—thank you in advance.

    My husband had been ...

My husband had been saying for ages that he wanted to stay here and dine here, and I wasn’t very enthusiastic at first. But once we went, we found it to be a wonderful Hotel with excellent hospitality, and we were able to relax and enjoy a truly pleasant time. The food was delicious, and the in-house tour was great for learning about the Hotel’s history. The abalone at dinner was especially outstanding! It was a cloudy day with light rain, so it was disappointing that we couldn’t see the sunset or sunrise. Next time, I’d definitely like to stay in a Bay Suite. To be honest, I did feel they still talk about the summit from 10 years ago quite a lot… but since it’s on an island and a bit away from other sightseeing spots, I suppose that can’t be helped.

    The meals are outstanding!

We had the teppanyaki seafood course. The ingredients, cooking, and service were all excellent. However, the Room was disappointing, as the bath and toilet were combined and it felt like a Business Hotel. Considering the price as mainly for the meal, we were satisfied.

    Wonderful Hotel

I chose the Classic plan, and I’m glad I did. More than whether the Room was a suite, this trip was about taking time to fully enjoy the Hotel’s traditional cuisine. I was able to savor a relaxing stay in the Hotel. The luxury of doing nothing is wonderful.

    As expected

This was my first stay. The service, the atmosphere inside the Hotel, the meals, and the views were all exactly as expected, and I was very satisfied. The Onsen required a short trip of a few minutes to a group Hotel, but the Shuttle Service was very smooth with no waiting. Next time, I’d consider staying for a longer period. If I had to ask for one thing, it would have been nice to have some artwork in the Room—the walls felt a little bare. Since the Onsen was at another Facility, I deducted one star.

    As always, the Facil...

As always, the Facility and the food were excellent. However, there was one disappointing point: when I went to the lounge in the afternoon on the day of my stay, there were snacks scattered on the floor, and they were still there when I used it again the next morning (I tried not to mind it, but it was obvious at a glance). It was disappointing that staff hadn’t checked and that the floor didn’t seem to be vacuumed each night.

    Wonderful Hotel

As expected from a Hotel used for a summit, it was truly impressive. There is nothing around except the Hotel and its Facilities, so if there were more activities nearby—such as an in-house tour—it would be the kind of place you’d want to stay for several days. We changed our plan to include dinner, and it was excellent—so much food we couldn’t finish it all. They also neatly boxed the baked sweets so we could enjoy them in our Room. Breakfast was also delicious; aside from the main dish, it was served semi-buffet style. One thing that concerned me: at check-in we were told that checkout gets crowded, so they recommended settling the bill early after breakfast. We did as advised and went to the front desk, but even though no guests were waiting, there was no one at the front desk—only staff standing by the entrance. Even after waiting, no one came, and there was no one at the front desk to speak to—so we could only keep waiting. After a while someone finally arrived, but without any apology for the wait, they simply processed our checkout matter-of-factly. That left us feeling slightly disappointed at the very end of an otherwise wonderful stay.

    Average Accommodation

I’m glad I was able to stay at a better rate by booking through IKYU rather than the Hotel’s official website. I use a wide range of Accommodation, from budget stays in Japan and overseas to luxury properties, but this time it felt overpriced, so I’d like to share my impressions. What I liked - I booked a Premium Room and was assigned a sea-view room, which was great. Also, the Premium Room had a bathroom with a separate washing area, which I appreciated. What disappointed me - The operation of the “Guest Lounge” on the 2nd floor (available to all guests) was disappointing. I have used many executive lounges and club lounges in Japan and abroad. Even though Shima Kanko Hotel is considered a prestigious Hotel, it felt disappointing that it was essentially “self-service like a food court where guests clear their own dishes.” At an executive lounge at another Hotel in Japan, floor staff collected used items. When I used the lounge on the afternoon of check-in day, a female lounge staff member told me to “please use a tray” (to carry food and drinks) and indicated a large square tray. When I tried to take it, she corrected me by saying, “Not that one—the round one below.” I found this extremely unhelpful. For a Hotel of this caliber, rather than instructing guests what to use, wouldn’t it be better for staff to pick up the round tray themselves and hand it to the guest? It left me feeling uncomfortable. Also, compared with other hotels, there seemed to be fewer appealing food and drink options in the lounge—nothing particularly memorable. - My Reservation included dinner. With an 18:00 Reservation time, even if seated by the window there would be little view once the sun set, so my expectations were not high; however, dinner was served at tables in an atmosphere that felt like being in a dance hall. Dishes such as “lobster roti” and “abalone steak” were served; looking back now, there was no indication of origin on the menu, and I don’t recall any verbal explanation from staff about where they were sourced from. At the time I naturally assumed they were local ingredients; however, some local souvenirs sold at the shop listed foreign-sourced ingredients on their labels. For that reason as well—even just verbally—I would have appreciated clear guidance such as “sourced from XX,” stated audibly when serving each dish. There is more I could add, but overall there was an impression throughout the Hotel that staffing levels were insufficient and service did not feel attentive enough.

    It was a wonderful stay.

We had a wonderful stay. The view of Ago Bay from our Room was stunning, the lounge was relaxing, and the Room was excellent. Above all, I will never forget how delicious the dinner lobster cream soup was. We were provided with Shuttle Service to Hoshoen and were able to fully enjoy the Onsen as well. All of the staff were kind, and they even gave us a map when we wanted to go for a walk. This is a Hotel where I truly want to stay again.

Perfect for a Mother’s Day gift

This time, I stayed here to celebrate both my retirement and the Mother’s Day service. I also stayed last year, and my mother was so happy that even after we returned home she kept saying again and again, “The Hotel was wonderful, truly wonderful,” so it is absolutely worth it. This time, my mother—now in her 80s—was delighted to experience afternoon tea for the first time in her life. At the restaurant (Café Lien), they surprised me with a congratulatory chocolate message plate to celebrate my retirement, which truly moved me. The lounge access and the Shuttle Service to the Onsen at Kashikojima Hoshoen (a sister Hotel) are especially appreciated for elderly guests who cannot freely go out on their own. I have stayed at so-called luxury Hotels in other cities as well, but Kashikojima’s stunning scenery, this Hotel’s atmosphere, and its hospitality-filled service are on another level. It looks like this will become our annual tradition from now on.

    This is a Hotel I’ve...

This is a Hotel I’ve been considering staying at for a long time. The meals were completely satisfying in both portion size and taste. The staff spoke to us right away, and their kindness was also very satisfying. During dinner, there was a moment when I briefly felt the way the dishes were cleared was a little rough, but overall we were extremely satisfied. There are Facilities throughout the Hotel where you can rest your eyes and body, which we appreciated as an elderly couple. It’s a Hotel we would like to visit at least once a year going forward.

Disappointed with the table service at La Mer The Classic.

Before serving dessert at dinner, the staff (an older man) did not clear the bread crumbs with the proper tool at all, and placed the dessert fork directly on top of the crumbs. It was extremely unpleasant. I have stayed here several times, but this is the first time I have experienced service like this. I am very disappointed. Especially because the food was delicious... Has it become much more casual?

The ham at breakfast is delicious.

My first stay at the Shima Kanko Hotel in 14 years. My wife loves the classic atmosphere with a nostalgic Showa-era feel, and I couldn’t agree more. The abalone steak for dinner with beurre noisette sauce was as superb as ever. In the morning, we took a walk around the Hotel to Kashikojima Station and found a charming greenhouse as well—full of that uniquely Japanese Hotel character. I was also happy to enjoy plenty of vegetables at the breakfast buffet, and the signature ham that reflects this Hotel’s style was truly delicious. Thank you very much for the upgrade as well.

The building, meals, and staff were all excellent.

I visited mainly for the architecture and the dining. The lounge had a deck and a wonderful atmosphere, with plenty of sweets, all of them delicious. There was also a wide variety of drinks, including alcohol. The Bay Suite lounge and the rooftop garden were lovely as well. The view of Ago Bay from my Room was beautiful. All transportation was provided by car. I was surprised at how spacious the gardens were; it felt great to take a walk there. Dinner at La Mer lived up to my expectations and was excellent. Unexpectedly, they also drove me to and from Hoshoen, where I was able to enjoy an Onsen bath. They also showed me around The Club, which was just as wonderful as expected. I also enjoyed hearing interesting stories about the summit. It reminded me that truly good Hotels offer that extra level of quality in every detail. There were so many places to see that I wished I could have stayed longer at this Hotel. The staff were pleasant throughout, and overall I was extremely satisfied.

    It was wonderful.

It was a wonderful Hotel. With its tradition and comfortable service, and perhaps because there were few children or families, we really appreciated the quiet atmosphere and were able to spend a very peaceful time. The in-house tour was also very enjoyable. We also appreciated the Shuttle Service by car between the three buildings.

Excellent dining convenience for families with children

We have stayed here for the past few years during our annual pilgrimage to Ise. Until now we had stayed in the Bay Suite, but considering the convenience of meals for our child, we stayed in the Classic for the first time this trip. The beautiful views were just as stunning as from the Bay Suite, and we truly appreciated the warm hospitality of the staff, the clean Room, and the lounge that guests can use freely. We were able to fully experience what makes Shima Kanko Hotel so special, and felt grateful that our family could return again this year. The only disappointment was our experience in the lounge. Some staff members did not smile, and it felt as though we were being watched at all times, which honestly made it hard to relax. We sensed constant attention on us—especially around the drink bar and our child—and when someone came over to where we were seated and silently adjusted a chair, it made us feel unwelcome and sad. Since this is a place where families with children are allowed, we would appreciate a more understanding atmosphere. We also upgraded our meal plan this time, but it felt lighter in volume than expected. This may be consideration for the typical age range of guests, but if there were a service that checked how much guests would like to eat, satisfaction could be even higher. Although there were a few disappointing moments, Shima Kanko Hotel remains one of my favorite places. We look forward to returning next year and having an even more wonderful stay.

I was finally able to stay at the Shima Kanko Hotel, a place I had long dreamed of visiting. From the entrance onward, the attentive care was exceptional, and I felt comfortable throughout my stay. I watched the sunset from the lounge and admired the stars in the night sky from the rooftop—both views were breathtaking. Depending on your Room’s orientation, you can also see the sunrise from your Room. The cuisine I had been looking forward to was every bit as delicious as expected, and the lounge atmosphere between meals was wonderful as well, making this a truly memorable stay. Since we decided to book the Ago Bay cruise—one of the Hotel activities—the day before, all convenient time slots were already full. However, on the first morning departure we were the only guests on board, so it felt like a private cruise. We enjoyed a relaxed sightseeing ride with informative commentary, which made it an excellent experience. We also joined an in-house tour; if time allows, I recommend both.

The Classic offers architectural beauty that blends tradition and modern design, along with French cuisine.

As we did last year, we stayed here again on our 4-night, 5-day trip to Ise-Shima and Nachi. Last year, we stayed one night at Shima Kanko Hotel The Classic. At the time, we were so busy actively exploring the building and taking photos—feeling firsthand the architectural beauty and history designed by Togo Murano—that we didn’t have much time to relax. On top of that, the Hotel alarm clock was broken and we overslept; worried about being late for the morning architecture tour, we rushed through breakfast as well. This time, however, we stayed two nights (3rd night at Bay Suites and 4th night at The Classic), which allowed us to fully enjoy each Hotel’s traditions and luxury, the changes across eras, and the differences in their relaxing atmospheres. We were able to unwind at a leisurely pace, and it was wonderful. Our room at The Classic was the Ambassador Suite Twin—the exact same Room 626 as last year. Because Room 626 is on a corner, it has a spacious living area and is perfectly positioned for beautiful views over Ago Bay’s inlet. Including sunsets, the view is outstanding. For dinner last year, we enjoyed “Ao,” a course featuring the Hotel’s traditional French cuisine with seafood. This year we treated ourselves even more and chose “Elegant Dinner,” considered synonymous with the Hotel and created by its fifth head chef. It was exquisite—the best French cuisine I have ever had. This time we did not join the morning tour; instead, we took our time over breakfast. With two nights there as well, we could relax in the lounge and truly enjoy downtime that we couldn’t manage on our previous visit. In terms of relaxation: while Bay Suites offers a wonderfully luxurious space, for us The Classic—with its gentle warmth of Murano’s architecture—felt more calming. Bay Suites provides a luxurious space to refresh yourself; The Classic offers architectural beauty where tradition meets modernity along with exceptional French cuisine. After using both Hotels together this time, what stood out most was that this is a one-of-a-kind resort space where nature blends seamlessly with an extraordinary escape from everyday life. That said, it was disappointing that Leanne could not be used due to renovation work at The Club. *As an aside: When we stayed last year at Westin Miyako Kyoto Hotel (including Kaisui-en), we had an enjoyable conversation with staff about how similar some rooflines and tower elements are between Shima Kanko Hotel The Classic and Westin Miyako Kyoto Hotel—another work associated with Murano. Including during Shima Kanko Hotel’s tours as well: it was clear how much all staff value Murano’s architecture.*

The service was excellent and pleasant.

Last year we stayed in the Bay Suite, and this time we chose the Classic, also to celebrate my wife’s birthday. The service was attentive at the front desk, in our Room, and at the restaurant. During our meal, they surprised us with a birthday message on the dessert, and my wife was truly delighted. We would love to stay here again when we visit Shima.

    Summit Hotel

It is exactly a “summit Hotel,” nothing more and nothing less. The views are excellent, and the Facility and service are decent, but I feel the dining quality does not match the Hotel’s overall standard. The club room was not particularly appealing either. I do not think I will return.

    Dream Hotel

This time, I stayed here with my son on a trip for two. It was the Hotel I had long dreamed of visiting with my late husband, and I truly enjoyed it along with the wonderful views. We took a walk from the Classic area to the Bay Suite through gardens in bloom with cherry blossoms, and the Shima breeze felt so pleasant—it was such a rich and peaceful time. The only things that stood out were that the check-in explanation was given rather quickly, and I wished there had been a bit more variety in the French hors d’oeuvres. The suite room was clean and warmly inviting, so I could relax completely, and we also enjoyed the Bay Suite lounge and rooftop garden—overall, it was an unforgettable stay. Next time, I would like to take more time to appreciate the paintings displayed throughout.
