    Hoshi, Hokuriku’s Oldest Onsen

    Because Wakura Onsen Tadaya was closed due to the earthquake, this was my first stay here in two years. I have stayed in Kanazawa and Yamashiro/Yamanaka before, but this time I used this Accommodation for the first time. The building feels a bit old, but it is arranged around a garden. The Room was spacious, and we could see the garden’s cherry blossoms from the window—the view was lovely. The bath area was also spacious, and there are two Onsen baths at different temperatures. The meals were more than satisfactory in both quantity and seasoning. There is a car rental shop nearby, and with the lodging perk we received a 10% discount. The next day we visited the Fukui Dinosaur Museum and Tojinbo. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom in Kanazawa and Fukui. I would like to stay again next time. From Tokyo.

    I enjoyed delicious meals at a historic Onsen Accommodation.

    I visited looking forward to experiencing Hokuriku’s oldest Onsen. As it’s a historic building, it does feel a bit old, but it was very well cleaned. The garden was also beautiful. It was a little disappointing that the large public bath and dining area were far from the Room we stayed in, but it may have been good exercise. The meal was truly satisfying—fresh, richly fatty sashimi alone would have been enough, yet there was also grilled abalone, a Noto beef steak, and even whole grilled nodoguro! I left completely full. Thank you for the wonderful meal. I’d love to visit again if I have the chance.

    I was told there would be a matcha tea welcome, but there wasn’t. The staff’s attitude also felt unpleasant, so I don’t think I’ll be staying here again.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    Although the building is old, it was well maintained and clean, which was nice. Both the meals and the Onsen were excellent. However, perhaps because of the price, our Room was far from both the dining area and the Onsen, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, we were able to relax and enjoy delicious food, so we were satisfied.

    Awazu Onsen Hoshi

    The building and Facility felt a bit aged, but it was clean and not particularly unpleasant. The open-air bath attached to the Room had too little hot water, and being exposed to the cold outside air made it impossible to use, which was disappointing.

    A Charming Traditional Ryokan

    This was my first time visiting Awazu Onsen. It is a historic Ryokan, and the garden was very spacious—wonderful to see in full view even from the Room. I understand these things may be unavoidable with an older Ryokan, but: - There are few electrical outlets. - The air conditioner is very noisy when running. - Perhaps because the Room is so large, the heating doesn’t work very well, so it gets cold unless you stay in the area with heating. It was a luxurious Room overall, but these points were a little disappointing.

    The world’s oldest family-run business

    I once saw a news story saying this Ryokan is listed in the Guinness Book as the world’s oldest family-run business, and it had been on my mind ever since. When I happened to have personal business in Kanazawa, I invited an old friend who lives in Takaoka and we decided to stay here. They offer a pre-booked shuttle bus from Awazu Station and Kagaonsen Station; we chose the former and arrived in just over 10 minutes. The entrance is very grand, with the classic atmosphere of an old-style Ryokan. After check-in, we were welcomed with matcha and sweets before being shown to our Room. The buildings are arranged around a courtyard, so you can see the Japanese garden from almost anywhere. On the other hand, our Room and the dining area were in buildings diagonally opposite each other, so it was quite a walk. Also, while it’s understandable given the layout that you can only move between buildings from the first floor, it would have been nice to have a few more heaters along the corridors. The baths—including an open-air bath—were decent overall, including water temperature. The meals were satisfying as well, but one disappointment was that my friend couldn’t make it by the last dinner start time of 7:00 p.m. due to work. We asked if they could delay dinner by about 30 minutes, but they wouldn’t accommodate it at all. Since dinner wasn’t served in-room and the dining area was essentially a banquet hall divided by partitions, I felt they might have been able to manage with some adjustments. Aside from that, there were no real inconveniences during our stay. Because the property is so spacious, we rarely ran into other guests except at the entrance, dining area, and baths—which was great. The value for money is excellent; if you got this same level of quality in Hakone, it would likely cost more than twice as much.

    It was extremely cold.

    Many Onsen Accommodations intentionally keep indoor temperatures on the cooler side, but this one was uncomfortably cold. In older buildings, it’s common to have supplemental heating in addition to room heaters, but there was none here. Moreover, the Western-style bedroom had no heating and relied only on a single old shared air conditioner. I was surprised there weren’t more complaints. If you are sensitive to cold, you may want to be cautious.

    When we were first served matcha, I would have appreciated being asked whether we preferred a window-side seat, or if we would be willing to wait if those seats were already taken. Since it was a special occasion, we wanted to enjoy it on the veranda. Otherwise, we were very satisfied with the food and everything else.

    A Historic Ryokan

    This Ryokan has a 1,200-year history and is well worth staying at least once. The garden is beautiful, and the buildings have a charming traditional atmosphere. The food was delicious. However, the hoba miso would be even better if you used one from Takayama. The open-air bath was a bit cold, so hotter water would be preferable. I would like the young proprietress to greet guests upon arrival; she did say goodbye to us in the morning when we left. I was surprised that the water supply was cut off at night—this must never happen again. I wrote these points for improvement because I hope you will continue for many years to come. Please use them as reference.

    It was an atmospheric Ryokan.

    I traveled with a friend. We stayed in a maisonette-style Room, and it was wonderful to be able to sleep in and relax in the morning. The staff were very kind and gave us lots of positive energy. The meals were delicious, and we were completely satisfied. On the way back, regarding the Shuttle Service bus to the station: since check-out is at 11:00 and you can really take your time, I would love to see Shuttle Service options available after 11:00 as well.

    Enjoy a luxurious stay at a designated cultural heritage Accommodation

    Since it was Hoshi, we wanted to stay in a historic Room, so we chose the New Year Wing “Asaga-no-Ma.” It is spacious and relaxing, and the free-flowing Onsen bath is large enough for two people. Both dinner and breakfast were served in the Room, so we were able to spend our entire stay from check-in to check-out without stepping outside. We think this is the best Room for enjoying a leisurely view of the garden.

    The software was excellent. The hardware, however…

    It was a Room with an open-air bath. The meals and the attendant service were excellent, and although the Facility is old, it seemed well maintained and clean. Unfortunately, the main highlight—the in-room open-air bath—was lukewarm. There was a faucet next to it for adjusting the temperature, but that water wasn’t very hot either, so we couldn’t really warm up. It was at least a comfortable temperature for a long soak, but as soon as we got out it felt freezing, so it wasn’t the kind of Onsen that leaves you feeling nice and warm.

    We had a great time.

    As the oldest Accommodation in Hokuriku, we enjoyed the charm of its historic Facilities. The garden was beautiful, and there was even a Noh theater; we loved exploring the building and fully enjoyed the Ryokan. The bath in our Room was a little on the warm side, but it was just right for me. The meals were more than we could finish—everything was delicious, including crab, beef, nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), and rice! Thank you very much for all your kindness.

    A family-friendly accommodation where you can experience Japanese beauty and hospitality

    This Accommodation left a strong impression with its historic building and magnificent gardens. We don’t have the expertise to fully appreciate the courtyard’s significance, but it was still a space where we could truly feel Japanese beauty, and the koi swimming in the pond were wonderful. At check-in, they served us tea and traditional sweets, and we were genuinely moved by their hospitality. Also, although it wasn’t mentioned on the Accommodation’s website (or maybe we just couldn’t find it), there was a dedicated Room filled with toys for children, which our 2-year-old absolutely loved. They also offered a stamp rally around the spacious property, so our child had fun throughout our stay. Our Room was a spacious Japanese-style room where we could relax comfortably. Highly recommended for families!

    Sorry for being late.

    Sorry for the late arrival. I was relieved to be warmly welcomed. I enjoyed the meal even though the time was limited. However, I had trouble with the narrow toilet in the room.
