    Slightly disappointing.

    The building has an old-fashioned charm, but although it was around 30°C outside, the air conditioning inside wasn’t effective and it felt hot. There was also a Japanese-style squat toilet; I felt it would be fine to replace at least the toilets with Western-style ones. I was glad there were hardly any foreign guests, but the attendants were foreigners, which was a bit disappointing in terms of hospitality.

    The Room was spaciou...

    The Room was spacious, easy to use, and clean, making for a very comfortable stay. As we were traveling during our trip home, it helped us recover from the fatigue. The Room amenities were minimal. It would have been nice to have cotton pads or cotton swabs, but they weren’t particularly necessary. The meals were not extravagant, but pleasantly tasty. It was a great-value stay. Thank you very much.

    An elegant stay steeped in 1,300 years of history

    Just as the title says, this was a Ryokan where we could truly feel its 1,300-year history. As we were told in advance, you can sense some aging in the Facility, but the Onsen and hospitality more than make up for it—definitely worth experiencing! If you stay here, it’s best enjoyed as a luxurious, relaxing time centered around the Onsen; families with children may find it a bit quiet. Lastly, we visited for my wife’s birthday, and we were very satisfied with the service, including a birthday message. We’ll do our best to come back again!

    There were two centi...

    There were two centipedes in the Room. Even though I suddenly felt unwell and returned without having dinner or staying overnight, no one even asked if I was okay, which left me feeling uncomfortable.

    Traveling with my elderly mother as a group of three!

    The historic entrance and garden, as well as the view from the 6th-floor Room window, were wonderful! We were also very satisfied with the meals and service. However, the sink in the Room drained poorly, one of the cupboard screws had come loose and the door seemed damaged, and we noticed a bit of dust around the safe and TV. They came to fix the screw right away after we mentioned it. Overall, we were very satisfied! My elderly mother also really enjoyed her stay. Thank you very much!

    It was a comfortable accommodation.

    My two-and-a-half-year-old son was staying at a Ryokan for the first time, and he enjoyed it so much from start to finish without being scared. It had been a long time since we had such a day full of smiles. We were very satisfied with both the meals and the Onsen. Thank you very much.

    We aspire to be a first-class Ryokan in every respect—history, character, and beyond.

    Despite its history, prestige, and nationally registered garden, it falls short due to issues with the quality of the cuisine. Most of the staff are foreigners; they all work hard and are dedicated, and I do appreciate that. However, compared with other Ryokan regarded as top-class, it is noticeably inferior. I was left wondering what Hoshi is aiming for.

    It was a wonderful, heartwarming accommodation.

    Thank you very much for everything. The staff welcomed us with smiles, and it was a wonderful Accommodation that made us feel warm from the very beginning. Although meals were served in a large hall, it still felt private like a private room. There was a wide variety of dishes, all delicious—we were very satisfied. We stayed in a Japanese-style Room in the main building; while it had a sense of history, it was spacious enough for three people and we spent our time comfortably. The large public bath was also spacious, and the open-air bath was excellent as well. A walk through the well-maintained garden was lovely too—the moss was beautiful. The value for money surprised us in the best way. We would love to visit again.

    Thank you for hosting us in the Special Room under the Golden Week/Obon/New Year Plan. As it was Golden Week, we understood the price would be higher than usual. Since it was over 60,000 yen per person, we did have certain expectations. We felt the meals could have used a bit more creativity. The ingredients may be considered high-end, but many dishes were simply seared or grilled and felt like something we could normally eat at home. As for the sashimi, it was beautifully arranged on a large platter and filled to capacity; however, we ended up leaving nearly half of it uneaten. Even the grilled nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), which we were looking forward to, was tough… Dishes kept coming one after another, but none left a lasting impression. To put it bluntly, it felt like there was only quantity and volume. Regarding the Room as well, the toilet was extremely small, and because the door opened inward, it was so tight that changing into toilet slippers was difficult. This was also our first time experiencing that. The historic hot spring and building were wonderful. We apologize for being so forward and for any rudeness.

    The meals are definitely delicious (especially for Japanese guests). Overall, it’s not particularly luxurious. However, that lack of excessive luxury is actually a plus. Any drawbacks are more than made up for by the great food, which leaves you very satisfied. Personally, I would have appreciated having more than one designated smoking area.

    Great food and great value for money

    This was my first stay, and as soon as I pulled up at the entrance, staff came right out to assist. They helped unload my luggage and guided me to the parking spot, which gave a lively impression. Once inside, the three staff members who handled check-in at the front desk, served matcha and Japanese sweets, and carried our luggage to the Room while explaining things were all foreigners. There were a few moments when communication was a bit difficult, but seeing them working hard so far from home in Japan actually made me want to support them. The large public bath was spacious and also had an open-air bath—truly an Onsen with a source temperature of 47°C. In the center there was a large, well-maintained garden and pond, and you could walk all the way around via the corridors. Our Room was Yoro-no-Ma in the Autumn Wing, and it was spacious at 95 m². I chose this Room because I liked the photo of its private open-air bath, but when I actually used it, it was only about 50 cm deep. When soaking up to my shoulders, my head hit the edge of the tub, so I couldn’t relax in it. I don’t understand why it is so shallow. The Room is Japanese-Western style; however, it had a low table with floor cushions in traditional Japanese style. I would have preferred a table with chairs (I’m elderly and my legs start to hurt). There was only one TV set, and you can’t watch it from the bed area—disappointing. Both dinner and breakfast were served in spacious private rooms on the third floor and were very comfortable. Dinner was excellent in both quality and quantity. The Hakusan soba had flavorful broth and was delicious, and there was plenty of tasty wagyu shabu-shabu beef as well. They even served crab and whole grilled nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), so I got full; I left some rice untouched and couldn’t get to the final matcha pudding. Breakfast also offered many items including two kinds of dried fish dishes. After checkout, the proprietress took a commemorial photo for us and explained about Komon Sugi towering in front of entrance as well; this reminded me again that this is truly historic Ryokan. For this Onsen experience plus these meals at this price point offers outstanding value for money. If given another opportunity I'd love stay here again too!

    It was disappointing.

    I had long been curious about this Accommodation, said to be the oldest in Hokuriku, so I decided to stay here by making a side trip during my visit to Kanazawa. Because my expectations were high, it ended up being a disappointing stay. It was the day after snowfall right after the New Year holidays. The first disappointment was that the parking lot had not been cleared of snow at all. I carelessly wore regular sneakers, and it was disheartening to realize I was expected to park there. My shoes were soaked by the time I checked in. I have stayed at many Hotels in snowy regions, but this was my first experience with a parking lot that hadn’t been shoveled at all. When I stood in front of the Ryokan, it was much larger than expected—more like a large-scale Hotel. Since it is known as an “oldest Accommodation,” I had imagined a small, intimate Ryokan, so this surprised me. The second surprise upon entering was that many staff members greeted us and everything—including check-in—was set up like an assembly line. It felt rushed and lacked atmosphere. The matcha service that used to be offered is now paid. Guests kept arriving one after another, and it was extremely crowded. The Onsen indoor bath was spacious, but I was surprised by how shallow the water was—it only came up to around chest level. The tub itself is deep, so it’s obvious they are intentionally not filling it enough. There is an open-air bath, but some of the stepping stones leading there were partially submerged in melted snow water. With snow still falling lightly, you have to step into cold water just to reach the open-air bath. A cleaning hose had also been left out. Dinner tasted good, but most items were either heated over a candle (grilled or simmered) or sashimi-focused. Even when I asked what kind of fish the sashimi was, no one could tell me. Even if someone has a “training” tag on their uniform, they should be able to confirm at least what fish is being served beforehand. After that they chatted as if they had nothing else to do—perhaps part-time staff. Breakfast felt like a tasting event for deli-style souvenir foods sold at the shop; there didn’t seem to be any standout dishes that reflected a chef’s craftsmanship. There were no events or services—the kind most Ryokan now routinely offer with some creativity and effort—at all. My impression is of a Ryokan resting on its history rather than improving its hospitality standards today. I’m sure every Accommodation struggles with cost reductions these days; however while many places work hard not to show it and continue providing attentive service anyway,this Ryokan felt like complete opposite . On our way out,a woman who seemed like owner bowed wearing kimono,but even that looked lonely rather than welcoming .

    The Value of Age

    The detached guesthouse we stayed in was built in the Meiji era, and it was an exceptional space where we could fully enjoy its timeless presence and a garden that felt like a true cultural treasure. We will visit again to enjoy the changing seasons.

    Highly satisfied

    It’s great that you can add optional dishes to the meal. Adding crab, a sashimi platter, and sweet shrimp was the right choice. It made for a very luxurious dinner. The Room was also unexpectedly spacious, with a sunken kotatsu and an additional adjoining room, making it the perfect space for companions who insist on an after-party.

    Thank you very much for upgrading our Room on this occasion. The spacious Room was extremely comfortable. The staff member in charge of our Room still seemed to find Japanese difficult, but their sincere hospitality came through clearly. If they are still with you, please take good care of them. As always, the food was delicious. Wherever we go, we end up comparing the meals to yours. We look forward to staying with you again.

    A Classic Ryokan with Timeless Charm

    I was a little worried about whether it would be worth the price, but the building was magnificent, and the interior had the charm of a good old Japanese Ryokan. Many of the staff were foreigners, but their smiles and service were excellent, with hospitality better than some Hotels. The Room is irresistible for anyone who loves Ryokan-style stays. Even without a car, their Shuttle Service to Awazu Station was extremely helpful. This time I stayed for one night, but on my next trip to Ishikawa I’d love to stay here again and enjoy two nights. I truly hope this kind of Ryokan will continue for many years to come.

    A Birthday Trip for Your Child

    We stayed here for a birthday trip to celebrate our child turning two. We were looking for a Room with an open-air bath and in-room dining, and the Plan for the “Horai-no-Ma” was perfect. We had requested a cake as part of the birthday celebration, and the proprietress even came to join us and surprised us with so many thoughtful touches (a gift, balloons, filming a video of blowing out the candles on the cake, and more). We often spend my birthday and our child’s birthday at a Ryokan or Hotel, but this was the first time we have ever received such an extensive celebration. We would love to celebrate birthdays at Hoshi again. They also gave our child stickers and sweets, and the meals were excellent in both quality and volume—there was almost nothing to complain about. The Room was spacious yet impeccably cleaned, and the open-air bath had been renovated as well—there are too many good points to list. Just one thing: although this Plan includes an 11:00 checkout, the last bus to Kaga-Onsen Station is at 10:30. It would have been great if there were an 11:30 service. Many of the staff are experienced professionals and were very kind to our child. We felt it is a Ryokan well worth visiting even though it takes over three hours from home. Thank you very much.

    Stay in the Hot Spring Therapy Building.

    As this is a self-catering therapeutic stay building, meals and other services are self-service. It wasn’t served dish by dish, but that was what we expected, so it wasn’t an issue.\nThe baths were spacious and relaxing, and we had a very pleasant time.

    It was excellent.

    This Ryokan cherishes a traditional atmosphere, and the warm hospitality from the proprietress and all the staff made us feel truly at ease. Each dish was carefully prepared, and we were able to relax and enjoy our meal with everything served for us. The Room was spacious and comfortable, and we could really feel the dignity and calm unique to a long-established Ryokan with a proud 1,200-year history. Our stay was pleasant from start to finish, allowing us to spend a truly special time. We would love to stay here again next year.

    This traditional Ryokan offers exceptional quality and charm. The onsen in Awazu, known as one of the top-class hot springs in Ishikawa Prefecture, is particularly appealing with its soft and soothing waters. It is also renowned for its delicious meals. While the facility may show some signs of age, it has been well-maintained and kept clean, making it an excellent value for a luxury Ryokan overall. We stayed here to celebrate my elderly mother's birthday, and we truly appreciated the friendly and accommodating service provided by the staff.

    Satisfied with the traditional Ryokan

    The exterior exuded a sense of history. The moss-covered courtyard featured large trees, lanterns, and trees that likely turn vibrant in autumn, all of which could be enjoyed from the guest room windows. However, the dirty window glass was a bit disappointing, though it was evident that efforts were made to maintain the property thoughtfully.

    Room with Open-Air Bath

    Drawn by the catchphrase of a Ryokan with 1300 years of history, I decided to stay here. The room was spacious and clean, and since meals were served in-room, I was able to enjoy a relaxing time during my stay. The rooms were arranged around a Japanese garden, with great attention paid to privacy, creating a calm atmosphere. While the Japanese garden seemed historic, I noticed that its maintenance could use some improvement. Meals featured locally sourced ingredients and were thoughtfully prepared; both dinner and breakfast were exceptionally delicious.

    This was my 10th stay at this accommodation. While it may not have the latest facilities, it offers a nostalgic and comforting atmosphere. I was delighted that the female staff member from the dining area, whom I spoke with briefly during my visit six months ago, remembered me during this stay.     Hokuriku's oldest accommodation, Hoshi - Enjoy the 1,300-year-old hot spring source

    It is said to be the world's oldest accommodation, and I had always wanted to stay at this ryokan. So, I was very excited. According to the staff, it has been in operation for 1,307 years this year, and I could feel their pride in their work. The open-air bath in the room was too cold in February, so I could only use it once. Next time, I hope to enjoy it more. Both the onsen and meals made for a truly satisfying trip.

    The meals for elementary school children were almost the same as adults, and they were excellent. With luxurious dishes like blackthroat seaperch, abalone, and Noto beef, I couldn't believe it was available at this price!     A long-established Ryokan—the hot springs and the garden we’d been looking forward to were both wonderful. The Facility and amenities are old, so they’re about what you’d expect. The meals were extremely satisfying in taste, variety, and portion size. All the staff were pleasant and welcoming, which really boosted our travel mood and made for great memories. The only disappointment was that after 10:00 p.m. we couldn’t reach the front desk by phone, and even when we went to the front desk and called out, no one was there. We just wanted some ice, so we gave up as something that can’t be helped these days... Even so, it’s a great-value Ryokan! We’ll be back!

    Hoshi, Hokuriku’s Oldest Onsen

    Because Wakura Onsen Tadaya was closed due to the earthquake, this was my first stay here in two years. I have stayed in Kanazawa and Yamashiro/Yamanaka before, but this time I used this Accommodation for the first time. The building feels a bit old, but it is arranged around a garden. The Room was spacious, and we could see the garden’s cherry blossoms from the window—the view was lovely. The bath area was also spacious, and there are two Onsen baths at different temperatures. The meals were more than satisfactory in both quantity and seasoning. There is a car rental shop nearby, and with the lodging perk we received a 10% discount. The next day we visited the Fukui Dinosaur Museum and Tojinbo. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom in Kanazawa and Fukui. I would like to stay again next time. From Tokyo.

    I enjoyed delicious meals at a historic Onsen Accommodation.

    I visited looking forward to experiencing Hokuriku’s oldest Onsen. As it’s a historic building, it does feel a bit old, but it was very well cleaned. The garden was also beautiful. It was a little disappointing that the large public bath and dining area were far from the Room we stayed in, but it may have been good exercise. The meal was truly satisfying—fresh, richly fatty sashimi alone would have been enough, yet there was also grilled abalone, a Noto beef steak, and even whole grilled nodoguro! I left completely full. Thank you for the wonderful meal. I’d love to visit again if I have the chance.
