    Modern Onsen Accommodation

    Although it is labeled a Ryokan, the facilities and service feel more like a Hotel. I wanted to relax in my Room, so this style—with no staff coming in and out—was very comfortable. The bus ride from Nagasaki felt long, but I think Unzen Onsen is well worth it. The view from the bus was also beautiful along the coast, and I enjoyed the scenery. The service in the front desk and lobby at Miyazaki Ryokan was attentive and excellent. The food was also delicious, with a nice Japanese-Western mix. If I had to mention a drawback, some of the younger staff and inbound-oriented service still felt like they were in training. I understand they will improve over time, but heavy “gal” makeup, loudly reading out menu explanations, and serving guests in the restaurant while coughing all seemed to lower the standard of a Ryokan. Many wonderful aspects of this Accommodation stayed with me, but small details like these can leave an unexpectedly strong impression, which was disappointing.

    Our family suddenly ...

    Our family suddenly had to leave early, so the dinner time was moved up to fit the Shuttle Service to the airport. Despite the last-minute request, you kindly accommodated us, and thanks to that we were able to enjoy both the Onsen and a delicious dinner together as a family. All of the staff were very pleasant. The meals used delicious local ingredients, and the freshly cooked white rice from the kama pot was especially tasty. The tea ice cream for dessert was lightly sweetened, bringing out the rich flavor of tea, and finished with fresh cream for a smooth, grown-up dessert. From seeing Unzen Jigoku we expected a strong sulfur smell in the Onsen water, but it was an elegant cloudy bath that felt wonderful. We would love to visit again if we have another opportunity.

    Solo travel

    I made a last-minute Reservation the night before because I wanted to relax in the Onsen, and it was absolutely the right choice! The Onsen was wonderful, and the meals were even more delicious than I expected. That said, I would have appreciated semi-private seating so solo guests can dine more comfortably.

    The food was delicious, but the bath was freezing cold.

    The meals were very delicious. It was disappointing that the bath felt cold due to strong wind from above. The Room was also a bit cold. It was quite dry as well, so guests visiting in winter should be aware.

    The Onsen is amazing.

    We stayed the night before in Obama Onsen and then came to Unzen. Miyazaki Ryokan was recently renovated, so the Facility was clean and we had a very comfortable stay. We were extremely satisfied with both the quality and quantity of the meals. While enjoying dinner, my husband and I even talked about when to make our next Reservation. Since we love Nikkei Onsen and Tamagawa Onsen in Akita, the sulfur smell didn’t bother us (laugh). It’s also close to Nagasaki Airport, and easy to reach from Tokyo without getting too tired—so we’ll definitely be back!

    Best Value Accommodation

    The quality of the food was excellent, and the Onsen's water quality was great, allowing us to have a very satisfying stay. When we reported that the air conditioner in our room was not working, we were upgraded to another room. The staff's response afterward was also excellent, and their attentive service impressed us. We have visited many Ryokans in Kyushu, but this has become one of the few Ryokans we would like to revisit. Thank you very much!

    Everything was excellent.

    Great for family stays. The building, room wear, amenities, and meals all showed thoughtful attention to detail. You can enjoy views of Unzen Jigoku from the room and dining area. The Onsen had abundant hot water and was excellent.

    Surprised by the variety of drinks included in the all-inclusive package!

    The newness of the facility, the onsen, and the hospitality were outstanding. The onsen featured Unzen's hot springs, and I particularly enjoyed the open-air bath with its sulfur aroma and slightly hotter water that melted away my fatigue. A long stone bench was placed between the cold bath and sauna, providing a perfect spot to rest after getting refreshed. Recently, accommodations of this class have raised their dining standards so much that my expectations might have become too high; I found the food to be average. However, I was amazed by the variety of free drinks available. Especially for sake lovers, there was an opportunity to sample local sake in small amounts for comparison—an experience I thoroughly enjoyed. Additionally, there were several types of red and white wine available as well, which left me very satisfied. The attentive service from our attendant made it all even more enjoyable—I ended up drinking more than planned! The photo shows breakfast; although free drinks were also offered in the morning, I refrained from indulging. Our room was a corner room with a view of Mount Fugen's first snowfall on what turned out to be an exceptionally cold day. Since heating with just air conditioning wasn't enough, we were provided with an electric heater as well. This is definitely an accommodation I'd love to visit again!

    A location full of exclusivity

    The Hotel located in Unzen Jigoku offers a unique view of beautiful autumn leaves and steam rising from the hot springs, visible from both the lounge and guest rooms. The building and interior design are modern and stylish, which I really liked. Guest rooms provide scenic views from both the bedroom side and semi-open-air bath side, with a spacious layout, comfortable size, and dim lighting that creates a pleasant atmosphere. While the quality of drinks in the lounge could be improved, it offers a variety of beverages including alcohol and soft drinks. The stylish yet relaxing space allowed me to unwind before or after dinner or prior to departure. Meals were delightful with unique menus featuring local ingredients presented beautifully; I enjoyed both dinner and breakfast thoroughly. It was disappointing that check-out time is at 11:00 AM—I would have preferred it to be at 12:00 PM instead.

    Breathtaking View of Unzen from the Accommodation

    "I chose this accommodation simply because my husband told me it had the best reviews in Nagasaki. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the staff's courteous hospitality. The moment I opened the door to our room, I was struck by the breathtaking view. We visited in late November, and through the panoramic windows, we could see a mountain adorned with autumn foliage and a beautiful garden. The steam rising from natural hot springs here and there created a unique and unparalleled scenery exclusive to this accommodation. From another window in our corner room, we could see Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hell) within the national park—a fascinating sight as tourists enjoyed exploring it. For dinner, we indulged in a luxurious meal featuring spiny lobster while admiring views of a Japanese garden. To my surprise, drinks—including alcohol—were free-flowing! Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, I also tried some locally brewed Nagasaki sake. I heard that you can enjoy different seasonal landscapes throughout the year here. My husband and I promised each other that we would definitely return."

    Thank you for a wonderful trip!!

    It was a mother-daughter trip. The breathtaking garden, the serene atmosphere, and the thoughtful details everywhere—everything was perfect. The Onsen, of course, but above all, the food! Absolutely delicious!! Truly exceptional! Thanks to Miyazaki Ryokan, I feel like I was able to show my gratitude to my mother. We even received a letter afterward—such heartfelt hospitality. Thank you so much for everything. The staff were kind, and the hostess was beautiful. This is a Ryokan I’d love to visit again with my whole family next time.

    It has become one of the accommodations I want to visit again.

    I chose this accommodation for my first trip to Unzen to see the autumn leaves, and it was the perfect choice. The onsen, scenery, and cuisine were all excellent, allowing me to relax and refresh. The peaceful atmosphere was delightful, with a stunning garden view from the room that let me fully enjoy autumn in Unzen. I was very satisfied. The food and drinks showed great attention to detail with carefully selected ingredients and beverages. However, I felt that having a wider variety of drinks would have made the dining experience even more enjoyable. The hospitality service left a positive impression as well; meals were served smoothly at just the right timing. Since it was my first time in Unzen, I had many questions about the ingredients used in the dishes. Although I appreciated their effort in answering while using their smartphone, I later found out some of the information provided was incorrect, which left me slightly disappointed. Despite this minor issue, I would love to visit again during another season and look forward to staying at this accommodation once more!

    The ultimate relaxation

    I stayed with my two elderly parents, both 90 years old, in two separate rooms with balconies. The view from the room was excellent, and we enjoyed the autumn foliage. The sulfur hot spring was relaxing and enjoyable after a long time, though I wished there was a view from the open-air bath—maybe that's asking too much? The meals were delicious, with generous portions, and the service was excellent. With an 11:00 AM checkout time, we appreciated being able to rest in the room for a bit after walking around Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour). My parents were satisfied, and my wife said it was the best accommodation we've stayed at this year. Thank you to all the staff members! Although it's far from Tokyo, I hope to visit again if I have another opportunity.

    A long-established Ryokan standing above hell.

    The view from the room was great, but the meals were especially outstanding. The elaborate dishes and thoughtful presentation, perfect for a celebration, were truly appreciated. It was also a pleasant surprise to have warm tea replaced multiple times—something I had never experienced before. My family absolutely loved it as well. The tenderness of the low-temperature cooked beef was particularly memorable. Additionally, my mother unusually asked for seconds during breakfast. We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of the flowing Onsen and spent our time leisurely strolling around Jigoku and the courtyard.

    First time in Nagasaki

    We stayed for 2 nights during our 3-night, 4-day trip to Nagasaki. Both the guest room and service were satisfactory with no particular issues. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful sulfur hot springs and delicious meals over the two days. Thanks to this, our trip exploring Nagasaki and Shimabara became truly memorable. Thank you so much! The accommodation is adjacent to Unzen Jigoku, so there is a strong sulfur smell near the entrance, which might be challenging for those who prefer saline hot springs.

    It was excellent.

    From the room, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the autumn-colored mountains and the steam from Jigokudani, as well as a stunning view of the ryokan's spacious garden below. The service provided by the staff was excellent. Perhaps because the ryokan is relatively new, everything was very clean and well-maintained. One suggestion would be to make the room lighting a bit brighter.

    You can see Onsen bubbling up from the ground right in front of the Hotel. Enjoy the Onsen with all your senses by watching and smelling it.

    First Unzen

    When deciding on a trip to Unzen, I booked this highly-rated Ryokan on IKYU without hesitation. True to the Reviews, the facility was clean and comfortable, with staff offering warm smiles and greetings that created a refreshing atmosphere. The high-quality hot springs and delicious cuisine made for an absolutely perfect stay. Stepping out onto the balcony at night allowed me to feel the serene Unzen Jigoku, while mornings were spent enjoying tea as I watched cats strolling through Jigoku—an experience that refreshed both body and mind. If I have another chance to visit Unzen, I would definitely love to stay here again.

    The calm atmosphere allowed for a relaxing stay.

    The elevator was warm, but I understood it was due to geothermal heat. The Room, bath, and meals were all spacious, providing a luxurious experience. The meals, primarily Japanese, included creative dishes and were very delicious. Additionally, the garden was well-maintained and beautiful.

    Unfortunately.

    At check-in, a young woman was at the front desk. She had no smile and her words lacked warmth, leaving an extremely unpleasant impression. It is questionable why such a person was placed at the front desk of a high-class Ryokan. The male staff who guided us to the Room and the male staff who served dinner were both smiling, provided thorough explanations, and offered excellent hospitality. They were wonderful. However, the poor attitude of the aforementioned woman ruined everything. I will never use this Ryokan again and will not recommend it to anyone I know.

    Like a Business Hotel

    The building was renovated over two years ago, making it new and clean, but the entire Ryokan is designed with a black theme, resulting in a generally dark interior. Unfortunately, we opted for an upgraded dinner with A4 Nagasaki beef steak for an additional 10,000 yen per room. However, the steak served was only about 50 grams per person, which made the upgrade feel unnecessary. The elevator is located on Jigokudake and has a sign indicating it gets hot inside. However, at other places like Dai-ichi Takimotokan in Noboribetsu or Tamagawa Onsen in Akita, elevators are air-conditioned. Additionally, even during summer at those locations, the temperature of the dressing rooms near large baths is set to 24°C and guests are instructed not to lower it further. It felt as though small details were being economized here; I found myself feeling less comfortable than I would at home—this was disappointing as a guest. While it's said that acidic Onsen areas can cause appliances to break down due to sulfur components, this explanation feels more like an excuse from the Ryokan.

    Autumn Travel

    It was the best autumn trip. Although it was still hot during the day, the evenings were cool, and above all, the scenery was stunning. The meals were flawless, especially the meat dishes which were tender and delicious. The rice was cooked in a traditional pot, but I couldn't eat it as I was too full. The staff at the Ryokan were very courteous. I will definitely visit again.

    The building has a stylish design, yet it is simple and calm, making it very comfortable to stay in. The dinner was exceptional. Many dishes highlighted local ingredients and brought out their natural flavors, allowing even someone with a small appetite like me to finish everything. I deeply appreciate the thoughtful gesture after my husband mentioned it was my birthday. I look forward to seeing the growth of the young staff members serving meals. The hot springs in Unzen are truly outstanding. The bath area was clean, and both the indoor and outdoor baths provided a relaxing experience. When I start missing Unzen's hot springs, I would love to visit again!

    We stayed here for a family trip.

    We stayed for a 1-night, 2-day family trip as described in the title. It was a sudden trip, and we were looking for an available Ryokan when we came across Miyazaki Ryokan with high ratings and made a Reservation. From the warm welcome to being guided to the calm atmosphere of the lobby, everything was delightful. The welcome drink of Japanese black tea and yokan sweets were also very delicious. The Room was adequately spacious, and the view from the balcony was particularly stunning. Although it was summer, mornings and evenings were cool, making it perfect for relaxing on the balcony. The meals offered a variety of dishes that were all delicious; especially, the Chateaubriand steak we added to our Plan was incredibly tender and enjoyed by everyone in our family. The bath facilities were nice but not quite large enough to be called a grand bathhouse. I also wished that morning bathing hours could be extended slightly longer. For these reasons, I rated it 4 stars. Overall, it turned out to be a satisfying trip. For our next Reservation, we are considering staying in one of their premium rooms.

    First Experience

    The reviews were positive, so I decided to visit for my first stay. I had the unique experience of trying an acidic hydrogen sulfide onsen, which is rare in western Japan where alkaline simple springs are more common. The sulfur scent and the authentic onsen made my skin incredibly smooth, living up to its reputation—truly satisfying. The semi-open-air bath offered stunning views, and the delicious meals paired perfectly with drinks that flowed effortlessly. The staff provided excellent service, making it a highly satisfying stay. This time was a summer visit, but it’s such a wonderful accommodation that I’d love to come back in winter!

    Magnificent Scenery

    I stayed one night in a Premium Design Room. Surrounded by lush greenery, the steam rising from the onsen source was mesmerizing and never grew tiresome. The subtle indoor lighting seemed to enhance the ever-changing scenery beautifully. The art displayed throughout the accommodation was tasteful, and I found myself stopping to admire it at various points. The staff were all very pleasant and greeted us warmly, which added to the positive experience. Dinner was enjoyable but felt average compared to other onsen accommodations of a similar level. Breakfast, on the other hand, left a stronger impression with its effort and quality. This wasn’t my first visit to Unzen, but thanks to this stay, it turned out to be another wonderful trip.     We stayed here for my husband's retirement celebration trip. Traveling by rental car, we were thrilled by the beautiful scenery on the way to the accommodation. Upon arrival, we were amazed by the breathtaking views and well-maintained gardens—truly stunning. The staff warmly welcomed us and showed thoughtful consideration for our celebratory trip. The milky white Onsen was exceptional, allowing us to relax and enjoy a soothing bath that left our skin feeling smooth. Both breakfast and dinner featured local ingredients with beautifully presented dishes that delighted not only our taste buds but also our eyes. I’ve already noted my favorite dish in the survey (laughs). The room was comfortable, making our stay even more pleasant. Although it was a short 1-night, 2-day trip, it turned out to be an unforgettable experience thanks to the heartfelt hospitality of all the staff members. We are truly grateful for everything and would love to visit again!

    It was a pleasant stay.

    The room upgrade to a higher floor was a delightful surprise. The view was amazing, and the interior, furniture, and balcony were absolutely lovely. Having separate loungewear and pajamas was also a nice touch. Dinner was very delicious. The gentle Japanese flavors of dishes like tilefish dumplings and simmered vegetables were exceptional. However, the explanations were sometimes too fast to catch. Breakfast, honestly, was disappointing. As for the bath, having experienced various Onsen before, the bathhouse and open-air bath design felt average. However, Unzen's water quality is undoubtedly excellent with its milky white appearance; though in the open-air bath area, I felt some caution might be needed due to structure or rock placement to avoid injuries. The modern architecture along with the lounge and garden atmosphere were very pleasant. Being a popular accommodation with many large families staying there made both the baths and dining areas lively and bustling. At check-out, perhaps it was the proprietress who saw us off—her hospitality at the end left a wonderful impression!
