    Unzen Miyazaki Ryokan

    We had a truly fulfilling stay. The glass-walled Japanese garden visible from the lobby was breathtaking, and it lit up beautifully when the sun came out. The meals were delicious, the baths were clean, and we were able to relax completely. The staff were all knowledgeable, and their helpful tips on local souvenirs were much appreciated.

    Be moved by a refined space overlooking Unzen Jigoku and attentive, thoughtful hospitality.

    The calm atmosphere was thoughtfully maintained throughout, and I was able to truly relax. Although it was a standard Room, the high-quality feel exceeded my expectations and left me very satisfied. Above all, the view from the Room was outstanding. Spending time at ease while watching the steam rising from Unzen Jigoku was a true highlight of travel—an unforgettable escape from everyday life. The guest Room has only a shower booth, but this was not an issue at all thanks to the large public bath that can be used without bringing anything. Not only were plenty of towels provided, but there were also well-stocked facial cleansing amenities—rare for men’s facilities—which showed great attention to detail and made an excellent impression. The bath itself felt slightly compact, but the hot spring quality more than made up for it; even a short soak warmed me comfortably to the core. Relaxing afterward in a slightly cooled Room was pure bliss. The food was also exceptional, especially the main meat dish—the cooking temperature and timing were perfect. The meat was so tender it could be cut with chopsticks, and its rich flavor was brought out beautifully. After returning home, I received a thoughtful postcard wishing me safe travels back, which deeply moved me with such considerate care until the very end. I would love to visit again. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

    A Ryokan you’ll want to visit again

    Not only were the Facility, amenities, cuisine, and location excellent, but above all, the staff’s attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and care were outstanding—my husband and I were impressed again and again. During meals, they noticed even our smallest movements and responded immediately. My favorite part was the corner where guests can freely read books. Cold barley tea was neatly prepared as well, and while enjoying the beautiful view outside, I was able to spend a quiet, unhurried time as if time had stopped. It was a Ryokan we were completely satisfied with. We will definitely come again!

    Maybe my expectations were too high.

    As a long-established place that was featured on TV, I may have had my expectations too high. The food was delicious. However, everything else didn’t feel worth the price. The staff in the Hotel seemed to be doing their best, but somehow it didn’t feel very comfortable.

    Nagasaki beef so tender it can be cut with chopsticks

    I felt this could have been a wonderful gastronomy experience, but unfortunately the chef’s personality and the excellence of the wines, sake, and local ingredients did not come through at all. The service staff could not answer any questions on the spot, whether about the fish or the drinks. Their lack of knowledge about food and alcohol made the stay less enjoyable. However, the front desk staff were excellent. Thank you for telling me about the Yamazaki Shop where I could buy eggs. The shop owner there was very hospitable.

    Because a typhoon wa...

    Because a typhoon was approaching during our stay, we had to change our original transportation plans at short notice. Fortunately, it had little impact while we were there, and we were able to enjoy a comfortable stay. The bath in the Room’s semi-open-air Onsen was truly “the Onsen”—a wonderful soak as we watched the steam rising from the hot spring source connected to Jigokudani. We were told that the lighting in the Room is intentionally kept dim, but I think the washroom could be a bit brighter. The food was also delicious, and this is an Accommodation we would definitely like to visit again if we have the chance.

    The bath, the Room, ...

    The bath, the Room, and the meals—everything was wonderful, and I was able to spend a truly comfortable time. All of the staff were kind, and I was able to unwind from my everyday fatigue and feel refreshed with renewed energy. Every dish was excellent; I enjoyed it even from the presentation of the tableware, was moved by the flavors, and had a great time with delicious drinks. Thank you very much.

    Number of stars

    My expectations were high. I wish the rice cooked in the traditional stove had been kept warm. The Room washbasin drain stopper was broken, and the valuables box could not be locked.

    This was our fourth ...

    This was our fourth stay, and after the renovation the atmosphere felt different from before—calmer and more relaxing, making it a wonderful Ryokan.<br> It was our golden wedding anniversary, and we truly appreciated the warm hospitality and thoughtful care from all the staff.<br> We would definitely like to stay again next time.

    It was a truly moving accommodation.

    We stayed here for our honeymoon. The beautifully maintained garden, the milky-white Onsen, and the staff’s service were all wonderful, but we were truly impressed by the meals. Every dish was carefully prepared without cutting corners, and we thoroughly enjoyed both the craftsmanship and the creativity of a menu that reflects a chef with French culinary experience. The use of several local ingredients also made us feel it was meaningful to stay in Unzen. Honestly, we felt it stood out among Accommodations in the same price range.

    It was an excellent ...

    It was an excellent Ryokan (Hotel) in every way. The meals were delicious, and the Room was clean, so we were able to relax and enjoy our stay. We will definitely stay here again next time.

    It was my first trip...

    It was my first trip to Unzen. The Ryokan was clean, and while the hospitality wasn’t flashy, they took good care of us. What impressed me most was how comfortable the futon sheets were. They were the most pleasant sheets I’ve ever had at any Ryokan. I’d love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    A Wonderful Unzen Memory

    The Room was very clean. All of the meals were delicious. From the Room at this Hotel inside Unzen Jigoku, you can see the steam from Odaikyoukan! The semi-open-air sulfur hot-spring bath, enjoyed while watching the drifting steam, was amazing—I could have stayed in for hours! Since I used it many times, I would have liked a bathrobe. The lounge was stylish and had a good variety of snack treats. It would have been perfect with beer. This became a wonderful memory of Unzen. Thank you very much.

    一休大好き、旅行大好き！

    We had a wonderful wedding anniversary.

    We stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Unzen has many wonderful Ryokan and Hotels, and choosing Unzen Miyazaki Ryokan was definitely the right decision. As always, it was outstanding. The cuisine, the Room atmosphere, the baths, and the hospitality were all extremely satisfying. We will definitely stay again.

    We had an amazing night in Unzen.

    The Hotel’s atmosphere, front desk service, and both the quality and quantity of the food were all great! It would be even better if the extra bed were more comfortable. We were soothed by the cool breeze in the garden, which offered a different charm from Unzen Jigoku.

    It felt refreshing, ...

    It felt refreshing, as we had been staying at major chain Ryokan for the past few years. The Room and Facility were wonderful, and dinner was also very delicious. Breakfast felt a little lacking because there weren’t many dishes to go with rice, but I was happy that the drinks were self-serve and that I could choose a café latte. We don’t use large public baths, so we usually stay in a Room with an open-air bath, but it was fully booked due to Golden Week... Even so, we chose this Accommodation because it has private baths, but it was disappointing that there was no guidance about making a Reservation upon arrival (since it said Reservations are accepted in order of arrival). Because it is paid, we expected a bath where we could relax, but there is only one chair in the changing area, so after getting out of the bath one person ends up standing. The bath itself and the hot water were excellent, which made it even more disappointing that we couldn’t truly relax. Lastly, what stood out to me was that this was my first time being charged a parking fee at a Ryokan (lol). All of the staff provided very polite service overall, and it was a very good Accommodation—so I’d like to stay again when visiting the Unzen area. Thank you very much.

    The new building was comfortable.

    The courtyard seen from the large hall extending from the Hotel’s spacious front desk is part of Unzen Jigoku itself, but it is a little removed from the area where thick steam rises. In a good way, that felt reassuring; in a bad way, it was slightly underwhelming. On the other hand, the Hotel is modern and new, packed with many of the features tourists hope for, and it was very comfortable. The only downside was that, despite being a historic Ryokan, it didn’t really convey much history or character. That said, based on my personal experience staying at several different types of hotels in this area, I can confidently recommend this as an excellent choice for a first visit to Unzen.

    This was very disappointing. I’ve never had an experience like this before.

    On my first trip to Nagasaki, I stayed at Miyazaki Ryokan in Unzen Onsen on the final day. It’s a lovely long-established Ryokan, and my impression was that many of the staff are young (everyone worked hard and treated us very politely). The garden is magnificent, and a morning walk there felt wonderful. The view from the Room balcony was also very soothing. The Onsen water was great, and overall it wasn’t bad, but I can’t say my satisfaction was high because the pre-arrival handling of meals was disappointing. I stay at Onsen Accommodations about once a month, and this was the first time I experienced this kind of response—I was truly bewildered. I consulted them in advance about allergies, but they sent me an example menu centered on allergen ingredients, and told me they would still serve dishes containing allergens and that I should simply leave them uneaten. They also told me to order any additional dishes by three days before my stay. At that point, I should have canceled and looked for another Accommodation. Three days before arrival they said the menu had been decided and sent me the course details, but there was almost nothing I could eat. The only additional dish available to order was a 200g wagyu steak. Since I’m a light eater, I explained that I usually can’t even finish 100g of steak, but they said they could only provide 200g—so with nothing else seemingly available to eat, I ordered it as instructed three days in advance. At dinner on the day of our stay, I wondered what would happen—but they accommodated my allergies across all dishes after all, so the additional dish wasn’t needed at all. However, it couldn’t be canceled; I couldn’t force myself to eat it either and ended up leaving most of it untouched. Honestly, I kept wondering what all those pre-arrival exchanges were for. It also felt awful to leave meat as-is on the plate—and being overly full meant I couldn’t sleep well. It was my first time in Nagasaki and we had been having such a wonderful time until then, so it’s truly disappointing that things left me with mixed feelings right at the very end. I regret not trusting my discomfort beforehand and choosing another Accommodation instead.

    It was a quiet accommodation.

    The Facility was clean throughout, and the amenities were well stocked, which was great. The Hell Tour spots were also right behind the property, which was very convenient. The staff were very kind, and I really appreciated it.

    It was very good!

    Everything was excellent in every way. There was just one issue at breakfast: after the staff member who showed us to our seats said, “Please wait for your dishes,” they never came back, and even all the dishes that had been set on the table in advance (including the pickles) were taken away. While we were looking around, another staff member noticed and brought our food, repeatedly apologizing. Even though it wasn’t their fault, they kept saying “I’m sorry” many times afterward as well. When we were leaving, it started raining as we were moving to another Ryokan for two nights in Unzen Onsen, so I told the proprietress I’d like to borrow an umbrella. By chance, that same staff member spoke to us and not only lent us an umbrella but also carried our heavy luggage for us. I felt truly sorry because they treated us so kindly. It was a trip with my elderly father, and he was also delighted with everything—the view of Jigoku from the Room and even the complimentary beer in the refrigerator. This is an Accommodation I would visit often if it were closer. If I go to Unzen again, I would love to stay here again.

    Outstanding hospitality.

    After reading various Reviews, I made an early Reservation. It was the right decision! The view from the Room, making the most of the location, was outstanding. I also loved the food, the Onsen, and even the scent of sulfur. Upon arrival, the proprietress greeted us warmly and even helped carry our luggage—I was truly impressed. At departure, she waved until our car drove away, which made me very happy. All staff provided excellent service, and I was amazed by the hospitality of this long-established Ryokan. Dinner was a series of delights, from fresh sashimi to tender meat. Breakfast also offered a wide variety of dishes, and I had seconds of rice and miso soup. It’s far away so it won’t be easy to visit again soon, but it has become an Accommodation I definitely want to return to. Thanks to this stay, I can go back to work tomorrow feeling motivated. Thank you very much.

    We stayed for two nights, and it was truly a wonderful Accommodation. The building and gardens, including the lobby, are beautifully designed—especially recommended for those interested in architecture. The meals are delicate and innovative, with portions that are not too large, so you can relax and enjoy them while looking out at the lovely garden. Staff training is clearly thorough, and everyone provided excellent service. We would love to stay here again when we visit Unzen.

    We were satisfied with both the Onsen and the meals in a nature-rich setting.

    This Onsen Ryokan is set amid magnificent natural surroundings. The building is simple and clean. The Onsen is also a sulfur spring with free-flowing hot spring water direct from the source. We were very satisfied with the meals. The staff are courteous as well. The only issue was that while the Facility lighting is kept dim to better enjoy the outdoor scenery, we would have liked the guestroom corridors to be a bit brighter, and we were concerned that the heating did not seem to be working.

    A wonderful Ryokan with 97 years of history.

    Having been rebuilt just three years ago, the building was beautiful in every detail, and true to its name as a Ryokan, the hospitality from the proprietress and all staff was outstanding—an impressive long-established Ryokan. In the spacious lobby, we enjoyed a welcome drink and the Ryokan’s original yokan, which was delicious. It was easy to see why it received the Good Design Award in 2023—the architecture and interior were both wonderful. The Room I stayed in was the most affordable option and therefore compact, but it had an impressively large floor-to-ceiling sliding window; simply gazing at the borrowed scenery of the surrounding mountains made for a truly refreshing stay. Even though it was a Saturday night stay, it was very reasonably priced (perhaps thanks to a sale), which I greatly appreciated. The Onsen water itself was excellent, but above all, the temperature was absolutely perfect. With separate men’s/women’s open-air baths on alternating days, I ended up soaking for about an hour each day on both my first and second day. The expansive garden—said to preserve what has long been there—connects to the nearby “Jigoku” walking trails and is a lovely Japanese garden that pairs beautifully with the modern building. We visited Unzen this time around my spouse’s birthday, and when I happened to mention it at check-in, we were served delicious sekihan at dinner. We were truly touched. Everything else besides that was also delicious and beautifully presented; from the Onsen to the Room to the meals, every aspect of our stay exceeded expectations. I heard you will be celebrating your 100th anniversary in three years’ time, and I have no doubt you will continue to be a beloved Ryokan for many guests. Thank you very much for taking such wonderful care of us.

    It was great.

    It’s a good Hotel. This is my personal impression. Pros The in-room open-air bath was great. The bed was comfortable and nice. The meals were delicious; I thought both dinner and breakfast were very good. The timing of when the dishes were served was also good. Cons The female staff member who showed us to the Room had pants that were too long, which made her walk a bit awkwardly, and the hem was torn. The Room was too dark; I would have preferred it to be brighter (one light bulb was also out). Since this Room has an open-air bath, towels get cold quickly in cold weather, so it would be nice to have a towel warmer or a few more bath towels. I wish there had been bathrobes. For an expensive Hotel, it felt like a missed opportunity. When we left, no one saw us off; after we got into the car and looked back, someone waved. A little disappointing.

    I was truly impressed!

    Both the Room design and the furnishings showed meticulous attention to detail. Everywhere in the Accommodation, the views of Unzen were so beautiful—like framed artwork—and made for stunning pictures. The comfort of the beds and linens, the hospitality, and the Onsen that warmed me through to my core were all wonderful, and the meals were surprisingly delicious. The selection of drinks was tasteful and reasonably priced—I found myself wondering if it was really okay at these prices. This is a truly outstanding Accommodation well worth traveling a long way for. In Unzen, there is Miyazaki—Kyushu is home to Miyazaki Ryokan!
