    Recommended Sanyo-so

    A wonderful Accommodation with a sense of tradition and nostalgia. The hot spring water is also excellent. With a little more creativity in the meals, it could be even better.

    Wonderful!

    The beautifully maintained garden views, the in-room Onsen bath with free-flowing spring water, and the thoughtfully prepared locally sourced meals were all outstanding, allowing us to relax at a leisurely pace. Above all, every staff member greeted us politely and treated us in a friendly manner. We would love to stay again.

    We had a very relaxing stay.

    Even before our visit, you kindly and attentively accommodated our requests, such as providing a floor chair and securing parking. Not only were the Room and each Facility wonderful, but the hospitality of the staff was also outstanding. Despite it being during the summer vacation season, we were able to spend a calm and relaxing time far from the crowds, and even my usually picky wife kept saying, “I want to come back here again.” Thank you very much.

    Satisfied with everything

    While many historic properties are forced to close due to insufficient maintenance funding, we were impressed that this vast Facility is being preserved through significant investment and kept impeccably clean every day. The only disappointment was the limited wine selection and the lack of wine by the glass.

    Highly satisfying, recommended accommodation

    We stayed here with our pet. We visit every year, and we look forward to the updates each time. The meals have returned to a heavier style, and we are very satisfied with both the quality and quantity. This is our favorite Accommodation for both the Room Facility and the service. We will definitely stay again.

    I think your impression will change depending on which Room you stay in.

    I usually prefer the main building overlooking the garden, but this time I chose this option because I was able to stay in “Hatsune” before its renovation. It’s true that the ceiling and some fittings felt in need of repair, but in a good way it had a wabi-sabi charm and a distinctive character—perhaps that’s just me getting older. The main garden is wonderful, of course, but Hatsune’s private garden is just as appealing, and this time I found myself strolling there almost exclusively. If there had been a broom by the outdoor bench, I might have swept it myself as an activity. Picking up fallen leaves while observing the trees in the private garden was also enjoyable—something you can’t really do in the main garden. Kona Onsen has no noticeable taste or scent, so you may not “feel” it through fragrance or color, but once you soak in it, you understand why it’s renowned. I was able to appreciate its quality all over again. Enjoying such hot spring water right from the Room is the ultimate luxury. Given the atmosphere of the bathhouse-style setting, it doesn’t even need to be open-air. The slight sense of being tucked away is also delightful. As for dinner: as Mr. Murata of “Kikunoi” writes that “generally speaking, what matters most in Japanese cuisine is soup and sashimi” (from *How to Enjoy Kyoto Ryotei Cuisine*, Kobunsha Shinsho), I felt the soup at dinner could have had a bit more impact, and that instead of using tuna for sashimi, I would have liked to see more local fish served. (That may simply be because tuna isn’t a high priority for me.) Finally, nothing made me happier than knowing there are staff members who remember us. I hope we can continue to grow as guests along with your Accommodation. Once Hatsune’s repairs are complete, we will return—thank you again for your continued hospitality.

    Beautiful Garden

    I happened to come across a YouTube video featuring this Ryokan and decided to stay here. I made a Reservation for the same Room shown in the video, with its wonderful view. The garden was simply stunning, and it was great to be able to enjoy beautiful scenery from every window in the building. Someone was always carefully tending the garden, and I was impressed that this beauty is maintained through such dedicated effort. The bath in the Room was also excellent, so I could enjoy it many times without worrying about the time. We enjoyed the meals as well, but the simmered crab looked so realistic that my daughter and I couldn’t bring ourselves to eat it (sorry). As a personal request, I would have appreciated having separate two-piece pajamas in addition to yukata. There is a wide variety of Rooms, so next time I’d like to try staying in one of the detached rooms as well.

    We stayed during the Golden Week holidays, and it was a very calm and wonderful Accommodation. From the welcome to the meals and check-out, everything was handled with great care. The food was delicious for everyone, including our children, and the Room was clean and comfortable. Our whole family said we would definitely like to come again as we left the Accommodation.

    It was an excellent Facility.

    This was our second visit, and this time we stayed with our dog. We were very satisfied even when we visited without a dog, which is why we returned. Among Accommodations that welcome dogs, I think it is one of the best. A cart was provided in the Room, and we were told that if our dog is in the cart, we can also take a walk around the garden. Compared to our previous stay, it seems there are more international guests now, but I hope more Japanese guests will visit as well. The in-room bath was also fed by free-flowing natural hot spring water, and it was a very satisfying trip.

    Luxury Ryokan in Izu-Nagaoka

    I had long wanted to stay at Sanyo-so, a Tangible Cultural Property in Izu-Nagaoka, so I made a Reservation. The beautifully maintained views of the spacious Japanese garden are wonderful. In the new wing Room, a traditional Japanese-style house with views of moss and fresh greenery, I initially found it hard to get used to how dark it felt and the low ceilings, but there was also a continuously flowing hot-spring bath and a bedroom with beds. Since I was traveling alone, I was able to relax and spend my time quietly. The meals were also very delicious and suited to the season. The sake tasting set paired with the meal was excellent, and breakfast offered many dishes as well, which left me very satisfied. The property is large, and it was inconvenient that the public bath and dining area were far away—I felt like I might get lost. I also had some doubts about the service and sensed they were short-staffed; however, the Shuttle Service from the station was accurate and satisfying. I would like to visit again in a different season and choose another Room.

    Updated annually

    We have been visiting regularly for the past few years. We have yet to find any Accommodation that surpasses this one in its concept of letting guests relax and enjoy the Onsen together with their dog. The Facility, amenities, and meals are updated little by little each year, making each visit even more comfortable than the last. Maintaining and operating a dog-friendly space within such a large Facility must be challenging. We will continue to visit regularly so we can contribute in even a small way.

    I enjoyed the historic architecture and renowned hot springs, but I hope to see improvements in the dining experience.

    During this stay, I was able to rediscover the unique charm of Sanyo-so. Onsen and guest rooms: The free-flowing natural hot spring Onsen was exceptionally high quality and allowed me to relax both body and mind. The expansive, beautifully maintained garden and the elegant, charming guest rooms created a luxurious space that made me forget everyday life. Value for money: Considering this wonderful environment and hospitality, I felt the overall value for money was excellent. Areas for improvement: On the other hand, I felt there is room for further improvement in both dinner and breakfast. With such distinguished architecture and gardens, along with an outstanding Onsen, enhancing the quality of the cuisine would make the Accommodation experience even more complete. Thank you for a wonderful stay. I look forward to future updates to the dining experience.

    Family-Friendly Stay

    We stayed here as a family of four (a couple with our 2- and 4-year-old children) on our way back from the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival. We were drawn to the vast grounds and the maze-like connected buildings, and although we booked with a slight worry about whether it would suit our family, everyone ended up enjoying it more than we expected. [What we liked] - The staff, including international trainees, were polite and attentive. They kept a comfortable distance while being warm and kind to our children. - The Japanese garden was wonderful. The kids especially enjoyed feeding the koi. - The Room was spacious and comfortable. The New Wing Deluxe Room is set apart from other guest rooms, which made us feel at ease even with small children. - The private in-room hot spring bath (free-flowing) was very relaxing. It was great to be able to use it anytime. High-quality amenities such as the hair dryer and shower head were also provided. - Both dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented, delicately seasoned, and delicious. We ordered a lunch plate for our child for an additional fee (they called in advance to confirm). At breakfast, the chef drew a heart with ketchup on the omelet, which delighted our kids. Portions are slightly generous, so we tended to leave some of the French fries. [What could be improved] - When there was no front desk staff present, we weren’t sure whether it was okay to leave our shoes as they were. - We would have liked a wider selection of souvenirs in the shop. This stay became a wonderful memory for us. We would love to stay again if we have another opportunity. Thank you very much.

    The food is disappointing.

    The food was disappointing, with poorly chosen menu items. The shirako with miso ruined the dish. The cutlet had blood on the coating, making it unappetizing and concerning for food safety. Other dishes were equally unpleasant. The room had a historical feel but was old and dusty. There were cobwebs in the toilet. Service was average, though during meals, a woman dressed in traditional attire spoke loudly, which was disruptive. The Onsen was ordinary. Overall customer experience was average.

    An Accommodation to Clear Your Mind and Body Peacefully

    A beautiful garden with a flowing stream and many attractions inside the accommodation. It was unfortunate that the outside of the window in the onsen bathroom in the room was dirty, but the soothing onsen water with a pH level above 9 was incredibly satisfying. Above all, the hospitality and service from all staff, especially at the dining area, were outstanding. This is an accommodation worth revisiting and truly a pride of Japan. Thank you!

    Heartfelt innovation and evolution

    Once again, I was impressed by the new improvements this time. While the building and fixtures retained their historical charm as before, innovative touches were added throughout, which I believe are particularly appreciated by female guests. 1. Black tote baskets were newly provided in the storage area for each guest to carry personal items to and from the large bath, making it very convenient. 2. Two yukatas were provided this time, allowing for a comfortable stay. 3. The number and quality of pillows, as well as both the mattress and duvet, have significantly improved compared to before, ensuring a restful sleep. 4. We chose an in-room dining course with beautifully arranged dishes. - The main dish of sashimi boat was luxurious and plentiful (perhaps too much for women to finish alongside other dishes). - The simmered kinmedai (golden eye snapper) was impressively large with exquisite accompaniments like burdock root and taro. - Other dishes were served individually rather than on shared platters. Overall, meals were served in several courses at a relaxed pace with rice cooked fresh on a portable stove whenever desired—allowing everyone to enjoy at their own pace. - On the second night’s sashimi boat course, there was some variation in content; however, the simmered kinmedai remained unchanged except for slight changes in its accompaniments. It would be nice if an alternative dish could be offered instead of repeating kinmedai on consecutive nights. 5. The miso soup served at breakfast had an exceptionally refined flavor that left a lasting impression. 6. The refrigerator contained four beers (one per person), one cider soda bottle, and one orange juice bottle. Since we don’t drink much beer ourselves—it would be great if some beers could be replaced with more cider or juice options instead. 7. Foreign staff members once again took care of us during our stay—they communicated without any language issues while being polite yet earnest about their service efforts—which we deeply appreciated! However seeing fewer traditional Nakai-san attendants felt slightly nostalgic but perhaps reflects changing times? 8a) A unique observation: During breakfast preparation hours—we encountered an enormous spider inside restroom windows requiring staff intervention promptly handled despite understanding older buildings naturally come w/ challenges like these! 8b) Elderly companions expressed concerns over feeling unstable footing within spacious restrooms lacking supportive handrails along walls—though installing permanent fixtures may prove difficult renting temporary floor-standing aids commonly available via caregiving services might help alleviate anxieties? Next visit plans include requesting extra slippers specifically suited toward assisting caregivers navigating such spaces comfortably!

    I had a peaceful time.

    This trip was to show appreciation to my wife. We chose this accommodation with the theme of spending time slowly and peacefully. We were very satisfied as we could relax and unwind. The meals were delicious, though the portions felt a bit large for those in their 50s. The onsen water was soft and gentle. Next time, we would love to visit during the autumn foliage or cherry blossom season.

    Perfect for traveling with your beloved dog!

    The room was spacious, and the garden was perfect for our dog to play in, allowing both us and our pet to relax. The bath was large, with easy temperature control, so we enjoyed it multiple times. We also visited the main building and garden, which were wonderful. Meals served in the room were very convenient, and we especially enjoyed dinner. However, the explanations were a bit fast and hard to catch, and it was disappointing that no tea or similar beverage was served at the end. It would be even better if there were a Western breakfast option available. We look forward to visiting again—thank you for your hospitality!

    Experience the space created by stunning architecture and gardens.

    During a previous visit to Izu Nagaoka, I learned about this wonderful Ryokan and had always wanted to stay here. This time, my wish finally came true. The new building where we stayed was designed by a renowned architect. Each guest room is spacious like a private villa, ensuring privacy while being connected by corridors overlooking the garden, allowing us to enjoy our stay regardless of the weather. Although there was some distance from the guest rooms to the dining area and large communal bath, walking through the garden each time felt like taking a pleasant stroll and made for meaningful moments. The private garden attached to our room featured a flowing stream, well-maintained lawns, and lush greenery—offering an experience unique to this place. The indoor bath in our room was spacious with views of the garden, making it incredibly relaxing. Thank you for your thoughtful arrangements regarding our accommodations. The large communal bath was impeccably clean with both indoor and open-air baths at just the right temperature—extremely comfortable! Since it was a weekday, there were only 2-3 people at most during use, making it feel almost like having it all to ourselves. The massage chairs were also very soothing and helped relieve physical fatigue. My wife particularly loved the scent of the shampoo amenities provided in the bath area. Thank you as well for your warm hospitality during meal service—it made dining even more enjoyable! The shuttle service was also greatly appreciated; thank you for taking care of us throughout our stay. Maintaining such an impressive architectural structure along with its beautiful gardens must require significant effort; we sincerely hope that this wonderful Ryokan continues its legacy in years to come!

    Beyond Expectations: Room and Hospitality

    We stayed at the accommodation as a couple. Our purpose was to relax and rest our tired bodies. Since my husband has difficulty walking and uses a cane, I mentioned this in advance. As a result, there was a higher chair placed in the living room of our room, which made my husband very happy. Additionally, there was a shower chair provided in the private bath area, which was very helpful. Even without us asking for these accommodations, they went out of their way to ensure we had a comfortable stay, for which we were truly grateful. The meals were lightly seasoned to highlight the quality of the ingredients and were delicious. The fittings in the room seemed to have been beautifully restored while maintaining their traditional charm—it was impressive just looking at them! Both my husband and I loved it. The private bath was pleasant, and the large public bath was also clean and enjoyable. We are already talking about wanting to stay here again!

    Arrived a bit early but was kindly allowed to check in. The Room itself was old but clean, although I found a lizard mummy behind the sliding door, which I chose to ignore. Overall, cleaning in finer details seemed insufficient. Meals were disappointing for the price as preferences were not considered, and one dish took so long that I had to cancel it without any replacement offered. Amenities were very basic. Considering the price during Golden Week plus pet fees, it felt overpriced. Staff were friendly and polite but not particularly attentive. Aside from the garden, everything else was quite average. Would not stay again.

    Senior Couple's Trip

    This is our third stay at this accommodation in four years since the pandemic. The onsen with natural hot spring water was very satisfying. The meals were well-portioned, delicately seasoned, and absolutely delicious. We especially enjoyed the soft drink with cherry blossom petals, which we tried for the first time—it was delightful. It’s a pity it wasn’t available for purchase at the shop. This is our top-recommended ryokan!

    It was a wonderful Room and garden.

    Upon arrival, we were able to check in directly in the room and enjoy a relaxing time while admiring the spacious garden. The Onsen in the room had renovated water facilities, making it clean with excellent quality water. Overall, it deserves more than five stars; however, the only downside was that the Wi-Fi in the room was difficult to connect and very slow. The meals were delicious, and for breakfast, we could choose grilled fish. Each dish was carefully prepared, reflecting the chef's hospitality. We also received subtle yet thoughtful service throughout the accommodation, which deeply moved us. Thank you very much. Even if you're not interested in architecture or gardens, this rare accommodation offers something enjoyable for every generation. Next time, I would love to visit during autumn foliage season!

    The room, the garden...

    The room, the garden dog run, and the private bath in the room make this accommodation truly one of a kind. Having stayed at various pet-friendly accommodations, even my family member with high standards agreed that we should revisit this place. Although there seemed to be some trouble with the large public bath and we couldn't enjoy a relaxing soak, our conversations with a female staff member and possibly the proprietress left us with warm memories and positive impressions. However, what happened during checkout was quite surprising. We could hear everything as a senior staff member reprimanded an inexperienced foreign staff member right in front of us. There was no smile or farewell from that person as we left the counter. Just a few steps away—while still within earshot—we overheard them discussing "reservations from IKYU or Rakuten..." It made me wonder if they intended for us to hear it. I genuinely wish they had directly explained things to us instead. For reference, all of the foreign staff members were very pleasant. Unfortunately, those last 10-20 minutes completely changed our overall impression of our stay.

    Luxurious Japanese-style Hotel

    I never knew such a Facility existed in Nagaoka Onsen. The luxurious design features single-story houses connected by long corridors, offering great privacy. Moreover, the new building was designed by Togo Murano, making it irresistible for architecture enthusiasts. The meals were prepared with local ingredients and were absolutely delicious. This is a Facility I hope will be cherished and preserved for years to come.

    After all, a wonderful Property

    It has been over a year since my last visit. I was a bit worried about the potential mismatch with the target clientele suggested by recent web pages, but it was completely unfounded. The elegant and nostalgic atmosphere has been subtly enhanced with new ideas, reaffirming that this is indeed a wonderful Property. Here are some observations I made: 1. The meal offerings have changed significantly. Each dish is beautifully presented with a full sense of the season, featuring intricate combinations of small portions. The broth that highlights the ingredients was particularly impressive, giving an overall sense of "refinement." It was a delightful experience to enjoy such exquisite flavors in contrast to flashy dishes meant only for appearance. 2. Breakfast now offers a choice of grilled fish from three options, which is nice; however, it was disappointing that the fish chosen for breakfast (albeit prepared differently) also appeared as "grilled fish" at dinner on the same day. It would have been appreciated if we were advised about this when selecting our breakfast. 3. The old faucets in the washroom and bathroom, which were somewhat inconvenient to use, have been replaced with new functional ones. Notably, there are now two types of high-quality showerheads in the bathroom among other thoughtful updates. 4. Towels are once again provided in the large communal bath area (Daiyokujou). Since COVID-19 measures began, there had been notices posted in Room washrooms advising guests to bring their own towels to Daiyokujou; this notice remained during my stay so I brought my towel unnecessarily. 5. A person who seemed to be from abroad wore an "apprentice" name tag and diligently assisted us throughout our stay. Despite likely facing many unfamiliar tasks, they confirmed each step sincerely and attentively handled everything which warmed my heart.

    It is very appreciated that dogs are allowed to stay.

    In the midst of not finding many promising properties where dogs are allowed to stay, I appreciate the fact that dogs can play off-leash in the garden and meals can be enjoyed in a dedicated large hall. The historic garden and grounds are quite attractive. We made a reservation for two rooms, one pet-friendly and one not, for nearly 150,000 yen per room for two people, and visited with four people. Given the nearly 300,000 yen cost, there were many disappointing aspects due to numerous service issues and concerns. 1. Meals were not served even after the promised time. 2. Despite the time passing, breakfast was like a cold bento (in this case, convenience store rice balls would have been better). 3. It took nearly 30 minutes to replace the gas canister for the shabu-shabu dinner after requesting it, and the same goes for the additional charge drinks (we had to call twice to remind them, possibly because they forgot). 4. We ordered an additional charge dish for one person, but received it for four people and were billed for four. 5. Since one room was not pet-friendly, we requested to have meals in the pet-friendly room for four people, and were told an upgrade fee was necessary. We paid the additional fee, but the meal was of such low quality that it was unclear what was upgraded. I understand it is challenging due to the vast grounds, but paying nearly 300,000 yen for four people for this content is excessively poor. The reception and checkout services were not bad, and the room itself has historical value, but the cleaning was not thorough, with hair left behind, among other concerns. If you are charging 300,000 yen, the service should be more thorough.

    Enjoy cultural heritage

    As an architecture enthusiast, Stays San'yo-so has always been a property I wanted to visit, and this time my wish came true. Upon visiting, I was amazed by the vast grounds, the garden, and especially the architectural beauty and scale of the new wing designed by Togo Murano in the sukiya-zukuri style. It was something that could only have been realized in that era. Despite the enormous costs and effort required for maintenance and management, the reasonable pricing might be due to the hotel-style service. I was impressed by the balance of eliminating excess and not compromising on necessities. There are no welcome drinks like in a luxury ryokan (the refrigerator contents are free), no room attendants, and meals are served at table seats in the large hall (even though it's a large hall, the high ceiling and stage reminiscent of a Noh stage are adorned with beautiful kirikane by a Living National Treasure, similar to what can be seen at the Kyoto State Guest House). The course I chose didn't include luxury ingredients, but it was a properly delicious kaiseki meal. The room's bath was spacious with flowing water, offering views of the greenery outside, and the onsen was gentle and pleasant on the skin. The staff were all proper and pleasant. It's been a few days since I returned, but I find myself excitedly looking at the map, wondering which room would be nice next time. I look forward to visiting again in a different season to enjoy another room.
