    The second-floor res...

    The second-floor restaurant and the view of the sea and Takeshima from the Room were truly wonderful—like something out of an old novel. In this classic Hotel, with architecture that felt like a movie set or stage scenery, we were able to spend time away from everyday life. The restaurant’s beef curry is luxurious, topped with steak. The view is also great, so I highly recommend arriving early for lunch. The Room was a little small, but it was nice to be able to watch Netflix on a large TV. Starting with a man who seemed to be the manager, the younger staff were also very pleasant. A few local people we happened to chat with—perhaps volunteer sightseeing guides—were kind as well, making it a very enjoyable stay. Next year, I’m thinking of inviting my elderly parents too.

    Gamagori was very scenic.

    This was my first stay at Gamagori Classic Hotel. The Hotel is in a very scenic location overlooking Takeshima, and it was wonderfully relaxing. The meals were delicious and I felt they were reasonably priced. As one of the Japan Classic Hotels, the atmosphere was outstanding. However, the Room air conditioner did not work very well and it took quite a long time to cool down. I felt this is an area for improvement. The temperature shown on the air conditioner remained at 27°C until the end of my stay.

    Architectural Beauty

    It was wonderful to stay in such a historic building. The service was also good, and the meals were delicious. However, the staff uniforms are not presentable—stained, wrinkled, torn, and frayed. Why are they left in that condition? I can’t understand it. It detracts from the Hotel’s beauty. Please improve this as soon as possible.

    The Classic Hotel You’ve Always Dreamed Of

    I love classic Hotels, and I first learned about this Hotel last year when I visited Yaotomi Shrine on Takeshima (as a day trip). I’d been hoping to stay here someday, so I was able to make it happen this time by taking advantage of a special offer. The guest room has been renovated with a modern design while preserving the charm of a classic Hotel, and I was captivated by the beautiful details. After walking all day in Nagoya, my tired body was completely refreshed. The bathroom was also very user-friendly—I ended up taking a bath twice, at night and again in the morning. I also enjoyed an early-morning tea time on the lounge terrace overlooking Takeshima, followed by an authentic breakfast served on beautiful silverware—very satisfying. All of the staff were extremely courteous, and I have no complaints at all. If I had to mention one thing… there is no Shuttle Service from Gamagori Station, so you’ll need to take a taxi or walk (just under 15 minutes). I understand it may be unavoidable, but I couldn’t help wishing there were some good alternative.

    Superficial service that doesn’t match what you paid for

    Incorrect billing after dinner at the Hotel (I had already paid for a dinner-and-breakfast plan, but after dinner I was charged again for the meal and made to pay). Before the morning checkout time, housekeeping rang the Room doorbell. The stone paving at the Hotel entrance is coming loose and has not been repaired, which is dangerous. The glass windows were only partially cleaned. On the surface, they smile and try to give the impression of good service, but it is a disappointing classic Hotel with little substance. I have stayed at all other classic Hotels, and this one was by far the worst. They do not seem committed to providing quality service as a team. The only saving grace was the food.

    Unwind in a private sauna while enjoying views of the sacred power spot, Takeshima.

    Founded in 1916, Oushukutei features a garden that unfolds beyond classic glass doors, while sunlight filters through the trees and softly streams in through delicate shoji screens—time seems to slow as if you’ve stepped back into another era. Yet the water facilities are state-of-the-art. Alternating between the in-room sauna and Onsen baths, then resting on the spacious bamboo deck, made it easy to understand why this place is considered a power spot. Thank you so much to the kind staff.

    A Renovated Classic Hotel

    This is a historic Hotel that has been beautifully renovated while preserving its classic atmosphere. The bathroom is stylish, and the amenities are by Bulgari. The Rooms feel elegantly put together. The TV screen is huge, which makes it easy for seniors to see—much appreciated. Of course, Wi‑Fi is available. The happy hour from 4:00–6:00 pm at the bar overlooking the stunning sea, as well as the complimentary coffee and tea time from 6:30–7:30 am, are outstanding. The location sits on a hill with scenic views over Takeshima Island, and it truly feels like a beloved traditional Hotel in the area. We only had breakfast, but both the Western and Japanese options were very satisfying. Next time, I’d like to try the French dinner or Rokkakudo’s steak if my budget allows. If I had to mention any areas for improvement, it would be that I couldn’t find USB charging ports or a safe in the Room. Also, the slope in front of the entrance was tough for older guests. Lastly, I recommend visiting the literature museum managed by the Hotel (along the coast below; admission is free). It’s a wonderful place to reflect on the history of the culinary Ryokan and Hotels that existed there since the Meiji era and on famous writers who stayed there. A very friendly and knowledgeable lady in kimono is there and will gladly answer any questions you have.

    The Hotel’s stately ambiance and breathtaking panoramic views of Mikawa Bay

    The Hotel’s exterior, lobby, and main restaurant all have a wonderful atmosphere. The view of Mikawa Bay from the Room was breathtakingly beautiful.

    I’m glad I booked a guide! The Hotel was great too!!

    Among the nine classic hotels, I never thought I would have the chance to visit Gamagori Classic Hotel, but even though it was only for one night, I’m glad I went. I remembered information on Takeshima and the hotel guide that I had seen somewhere on the Hotel website beforehand, so when it came time to make a Reservation, I booked by phone. The volunteer guide explained many things in detail, and I was able to understand Takeshima and Gamagori much better for my first visit. Learning from the guide helped me understand far more than sightseeing on my own, and it became a much more memorable experience. However, heels are not suitable for walking around Takeshima, so I felt it would be helpful to mention this on the website or provide guidance at the time of Reservation. The Hotel has been recently renovated, and the lobby and Room were very clean and beautiful. Dinner while looking out at Takeshima and breakfast the next day were both excellent. The doorman in a silk hat also looked wonderful. It’s a classic Hotel in an area you don’t often get to visit, but it’s a place worth traveling to specifically to enjoy the Hotel itself.

    It was wonderful.

    About 50 years ago, when it was still called Gamagori Hotel, I stayed here in my 20s. Now I’m in my 70s. It’s hard to believe how much time has passed, but Gamagori Classic Hotel felt just as it did back then. Even the elevator that shows the floor with a moving needle is still there. However, I remember the elevator door being an accordion-style gate at the time; now it’s a standard door—but that can’t be helped. The service from the doorman and all staff was excellent. This time we stayed two nights at COVE, which didn’t exist 50 years ago. It used to be a traditional restaurant, and they have beautifully converted an entire single-story Japanese-style building into Accommodation—truly wonderful. We enjoyed both the nostalgic feeling of staying at a grandmother’s house and the comfort of hotel life. There is a Room where twin beds and a living area are combined, plus another double Room, and there is also an Onsen, so we were able to relax completely. Very satisfied overall. One small suggestion: a full-length mirror would have been helpful.

    The interior was very clean and beautifully maintained.

    We stayed again for the first time in a while, right in the middle of Golden Week. The interior had been renovated, and everything—from the carpets to the bathroom—was very comfortable. At the same time, it still retained all the charm of a classic Hotel, and I felt it had been renewed in a wonderful way. Dinner at Rokkakudo was also excellent. For breakfast, my wife chose the Western set and I chose the Japanese set, and we finished everything. The cuisine felt even more refined than before. It has become our tradition to cross over to Takeshima Island before breakfast and visit Yaotomi Shrine. We went again this time, but perhaps due to age, climbing the steps along the approach is gradually becoming more challenging. While we’re still healthy, we’d love to stay again. It also seemed to be peak season for clam digging, and for the first time we saw that all the water up to Takeshima had receded so you could walk across on foot. It was fun to see how lively it gets during clam-digging season—almost like a festival. No matter how many times we stay here, there’s always something new that moves us.

    The customer service was disappointing.

    I visited after joining the Classic Hotel Association. At dinner, I chose the champagne and wine pairing, but even when the fish course was served, no white wine arrived. I couldn’t wait any longer and asked for white wine just before the fish dish was finished. It was brought over as if it had simply been forgotten. Next, I pointed out that the sorbet in the middle of the course had not been served. I was told, “We’ll bring it at dessert,” but it ended up being forgotten again, so I had to ask once more. At breakfast, my husband ordered a Western-style meal and was asked what drink he wanted, so he said grapefruit juice. However, someone else came and asked him again. At check-in, another guest left their private car parked while checking in, which caused several taxis to wait outside. This is by no means an inexpensive Hotel, so this level of hospitality was something I had never experienced before. As for charging purchases to our Room within the Hotel, other hotels provide a receipt each time. The one good point was that they arranged a Takeshima tour for us. The bathroom also smelled bad as others have written about it, so I used it with the window open. When I went into a restroom on the first floor, there were unexpectedly no запас toilet paper refills—only empty cores left behind in the bin area. With no choice, I moved to another stall partway through; there was only one roll there as well. When I told my husband about this later, he said it happened in the men’s restroom too. I was shocked because this has never happened even at any Business Hotel. It may be fine to visit as a historic building, but I don’t think I need to stay here again.

    It looked different than before.

    We stayed in a corner suite. The view from the window was great, but there was no closet, which was inconvenient in various ways. I used to stay here often back when it was the Gamagori Prince Hotel and had good experiences, so I was looking forward to this visit, but both the food and the service were different from before. At dinner at the teppanyaki restaurant, it left an impression that the chef tried to entertain us while cooking. However, at check-in I asked if possible to reserve our memorable table (from breakfast), and we lined up from 30 minutes before breakfast opened, but it didn’t happen. It ended up being a stay that left me feeling somewhat sad.

    It’s very good, but also very disappointing.

    The Room was wonderful, and the food was delicious. The service was also good. The Takeshima tour was interesting as well. Even so, what I was left with at the end was a feeling of disappointment. Although each staff member’s hospitality is excellent, they are critically understaffed. We were told to choose times for dinner and breakfast, but even when it was time—both at night and in the morning—the restaurant wasn’t open. It was the same in the daytime lounge, but in any case, everything is served extremely slowly. It was my first time spending 20 minutes during a dinner course just staring at empty glasses and finished plates with no drinks and no one coming by. The food is delicious, the wine pairing isn’t bad, and the service itself is good. That’s exactly why I felt so disappointed that such a special meal ended up being ruined. Still, when I returned to my Room, it really was lovely with a great view—and it made me want to come back—yet thinking that I might have the same experience next time made me feel uneasy.

    It has been renovated and is now clean and well-maintained.

    When I visited last year, true to its name as a classic Hotel, the Room felt a bit dated. This time, the renovations we had heard about were well underway, and everything was beautifully refreshed. There were a couple of minor points around the bathroom area that caught my attention, but when I asked, I was told that because they are renovating while continuing operations, not everything is finished yet. It made me look forward to my next visit, when it will likely all be completed. The hospitality was as wonderful as ever, and both the stunning Takeshima view and the delicious breakfast remained unchanged—I had a very comfortable stay. On a clear day, the Takeshima view is truly priceless. And while even breakfast at five-star Hotels these days can easily exceed around 5,000 yen, I really appreciate being able to enjoy it here at such a reasonable price. It’s also great that you can choose between Western and Japanese options. Due to circumstances, I had originally hoped to visit during the Azalea Festival season starting in about two weeks, but ended up coming earlier than planned. Instead, I was able to enjoy the cherry blossoms, which was lovely in its own way. The Accommodation rate has gone up slightly with the renovations, but overall it felt well worth it. Next time, I hope to visit during the Azalea Festival. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    I questioned the dignity of this classic Hotel.

    This Hotel is a historic member of the “Japan Classic Hotel Association,” but it is now under the Kuretake Hotel Group after previously being part of Prince Hotels. Renovation work is currently underway, and the Room we used on the second floor with a view of Takeshima has been completely renewed. However, for those who loved and stayed here for its former classic atmosphere, some aspects of this renovation are disappointing. I wish more of the charm of the old building had been preserved (as at Fujiya Hotel in Miyanoshita, Hakone). For example, the wonderful dining room window-side flooring that once conveyed a sense of history has been entirely replaced with shiny synthetic flooring, and much of its former grandeur has been lost. There were also disappointing points in terms of service: due to insufficient explanation from the front desk staff at check-in, we were unable to enjoy an aperitif in the lounge this time. In addition, it was unacceptable that a front desk staff member smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. On a positive note, at the restaurant both dinner and breakfast were satisfying in terms of food quality and service.

    It has a charming atmosphere, but it may be cold.

    I stayed on one of the coldest days in February. I chose a Room with a private Onsen, hoping to relax and stay warm. The Room was a former tea room, with original wavy glass panes, and the garden had an atmosphere fitting for a tea room. However, even with underfloor heating and air conditioning, the veranda was cold, and the changing area connected to it was also cold. There is a sauna in a separate building, and the view from the terrace outside is lovely, so it may suit those who can enjoy the cold, but it can be tough for older guests and feels like a bit of an effort before getting into the Onsen. A throw blanket was provided, but I would have liked socks and a gown. I think this Accommodation would be wonderful in another season.

    Nostalgic Classic Style

    The Hotel faces the sea, and the Room offers outstanding views of Takeshima Island right in front of you and the ocean beyond. The Hotel building itself features classic touches true to its name, such as stained glass on the stair landings, creating a pleasantly nostalgic atmosphere. The main dining room also retains a charming old-fashioned ambiance. For dinner, the main dishes—the pan-seared white fish and the famous beef fillet cutlet—are carefully prepared, delicious, and pair well with wine. The staff are professional and courteous.

    Rediscover the Charm of a Classic Hotel

    I have been visiting various classic Hotels to collect stamps for my Classic Hotel Passport, and every time I visit, I am reminded of the charm and excellence of these classic Hotels. Without the passport, I might not have traveled to distant places, so I truly appreciate having it. This time as well, Gamagori Classic Hotel was a wonderful place that made me glad to have visited. The sightseeing at Takeshima Island National Park within walking distance from the Hotel was fantastic, and the hospitality of the lady at the front desk warmed my heart. For breakfast, I tried both Japanese and Western options; they were very reasonably priced for a Hotel yet impressive in quality. It was such an enjoyable stay that I'm already looking forward to visiting again. Thank you very much for your hospitality! P.S. The reason for deducting one star from the guest room rating is due to concerns like peeling paint; however, since renovations are planned soon, I'm sure it will be perfect next time!

    The view was amazing. The dining area had a nice atmosphere and was relaxing. However, despite the great facilities, the service was disappointing. There were weddings held on both days, and it seemed like there was a staff shortage for hotel guests. Lastly, at the lobby, I ordered ice cream without syrup by mistake; it melted as staff seemed too busy to approach. I ate it as is. When I mentioned this during payment, I overheard someone behind the curtain saying to deduct 100 yen—it left me very disappointed. I ended up paying with a 200-yen discount. Traveling from afar for an important holiday only to experience this was truly disheartening.

    Beautiful Takeshima Classical Hotel

    A Passport Journey The room was spacious, number 318. From the window, we had a beautiful view of Takeshima Island, especially during sunset when it was bathed in warm colors. At night, the bridge was illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. This marked our visit to the 8th classical hotel. The doorman wore a hat and tailcoat for the first time—a unique sight. Even the elevator had a retro charm. It was very quiet here as well. Dinner was served at a triangular table by the window. We toasted with Gamagori mandarin orange juice, and every dish we tried was delicious. Although it was hard to hear explanations from one male staff member, a young female staff member provided clear and precise explanations. Breakfast service for Western-style meals took longer than expected again. With both Japanese and Western dishes served at the same table, there ended up being some timing gaps between them. Additionally, serving omelets took even more time. The room wasn’t too dry and felt comfortable overall; however, if only the beds weren’t single-sized—it would have been much better as they felt too small. Amenities were somewhat limited; having items like body sponges would have been appreciated. There was also a slight odor coming from the drain that bothered us. In terms of facilities in the bathroom: while there is an exclusive bidet area available—it seems unused or outdated—improvements here could be beneficial. Additionally—the sink height feels too low compared to modern standards today. Overall—we were very satisfied but found some aspects showing their age which didn’t align with contemporary needs anymore. Having Onsen baths available might enhance enjoyment further! Takeshima Island itself left such an impression on us! In particular—during low tide in early morning hours—the views became even more stunning—and exploring around without crowds allowed us peaceful sightseeing opportunities!

    Stayed at Saryou Ous...

    Stayed at Saryou Oushukutei for two nights to experience the difference from Cove. While Cove offers a welcome drink with a custom cocktail prepared in your room and an aperitif gift when using Rokkakudo, these are not available at Oushukutei. However, Oushukutei has a sauna with unlimited access, which is great. At Cove, the hammam includes herbs for two uses during a one-night stay. Oushukutei, originally a tea house, has a wabi-sabi aesthetic that my husband prefers for its refined simplicity. The view features lush greenery and Japanese gardens rather than the sea, offering spacious and luxurious surroundings. The refrigerator is stocked daily with complimentary items such as mineral water, bottled tea, mikan chu-hi on the first day, and mikan beer on the second day. Plenty of linens are provided for comfort. The villa with an Onsen is truly exceptional!

    Like stepping back in time.

    An endless view of the sea and sky, with peninsulas, islands, and bridges. The breathtaking scenery from the large windows of the guest rooms never gets old. While my experiences are limited, the beauty here rivals that of Toba International Hotel. Although there is no bar, the sunset view from the lounge in the evening is exceptional. The toilet and bathtub share the same space and even include a bidet rarely found outside select European countries. The retro atmosphere evokes memories of hotels in France or Italy from a bygone era—one wonders what inspired the room's designer. Dinner was served at "Rokkakutei," a separate building specializing in teppanyaki. Even the appetizers and salads were carefully crafted using local ingredients, offering delicious flavors. Most impressive was how proud the chef was to be from this area; their passion for their work made for an enjoyable conversation. Being a small-scale hotel, staff members seemed to juggle multiple roles, but their familial atmosphere felt comforting. During my stay, I had an accident where I fell and got injured; however, their kind response left a lasting impression. Some furniture showed signs of age—for instance, there were marks on the living room table that couldn’t be wiped off—and I thought that combining the living room and bedroom into one open space might allow for an even better view. I look forward to potential renovations in the future. While not located in a famous tourist destination, I hope this hotel continues to maintain its cozy charm for years to come. On an unrelated note, I recommend visiting Muryo-ji Temple, known for its cancer-prevention blessings—it features theme park-like elements that make it worth exploring!

    It was a lovely classic Hotel.

    I love classic hotels, and I was thrilled to finally visit the Gamagori Classic Hotel, which I had always admired. The picturesque and elegant appearance of the hotel was truly impressive. The view of Takeshima Island from the window was also beautiful. The happy hour at sunset after check-in was delightful, with reasonably priced alcoholic beverages. Spending time with my daughters while watching the sea gradually darken was the perfect setting. Dinner was a steak course at the Hexagonal Hall, which I had been looking forward to. Since this was a commemorative trip for my daughter's marriage, I had requested a celebratory dessert plate in advance. The chefs added lively humor and a wonderful performance, making it an incredibly enjoyable and memorable experience. Thank you so much! My daughter seemed very happy, which made me happy as well. The fire performance was fantastic! Morning coffee on the terrace was a refreshing start to the day, and the breakfast was classic and lovely. Please continue to preserve the traditions of this wonderful hotel. I look forward to visiting again.

    There is a steep slo...

    There is a steep slope leading to the hotel, which was more inclined than expected, making it quite challenging to carry luggage uphill. The building is very classical, and at the entrance, a charming doorman in a lovely uniform opened the door and escorted us with our luggage. Compared to the wonderful doorman, the front desk staff seemed rather indifferent. Although it was supposed to be an Online Credit Card Payment, I was asked about payment methods during check-in, which made me anxious (later I checked my reservation details and confirmed that it was indeed an online payment). Skincare sets were not available in the room but were handed out at check-in by the front desk. After taking a ride on a beautiful elevator, there were still stairs leading to our room, which made carrying large luggage somewhat difficult during our stay. The room had an unusual layout as if divided into two sections; choosing a room with views of Takeshima turned out to be perfect. There was a compact shop in the lobby; however, I wished they sold items like stickers similar to other classic hotels. We dined at the main dining area for both breakfast and dinner; we enjoyed conversations with friendly staff members who made our time delightful. The tableware used was exquisite—I wish they would sell those as well! It would have been helpful if there had been maps for exploring within or around the hotel (apologies if such maps were available somewhere). Being a classic hotel comes with some compromises—sounds tend to echo easily here; we could hear surrounding noises clearly and worried whether sounds from our own room might disturb others too. Overall, this stay left us wanting another chance for exploration and enjoyment!

    The ocean-side Room was truly the best.

    This is my second stay. Last time, I enjoyed the volunteer-guided tour of Takeshima and stayed in a sea-view Room, so this time I decided to relax in the Room. The meals, building, and view of Takeshima are truly wonderful as always. After breakfast, I was delighted to see the banquet hall used in a drama.
