I had long admired the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel. I had visited Kamikochi several times for hiking, and each time I hoped to stay there someday. This time, the timing worked out and I was finally able to visit. For our family it felt like a special treat, but we were truly impressed—not only by the wonderful location and beautiful building, but also by how delicious the food was. Above all, we were moved by the outstanding hospitality: every staff member spoke to us warmly yet politely, even the housekeeping team greeted us with a smile, and they treated our preschool-aged child with such kindness and care. I’m not sure when we’ll be able to return, but we definitely want to come back again. Thank you very much!

    Dinner was extremely disappointing.

Three friends and I stayed here.\n\nWe had been looking forward to Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, and both the Hotel itself and our Room were wonderful, but dinner was extremely disappointing.\n\nIn the center of the main dining room, against a wall, there was a large table like a service station. One woman was spreading paper on it, taping and peeling it off, and writing things down. She seemed to be directing servers on which table each dish should go to; the food was brought there first and unwrapped.\n\nBecause our table was near that station, many staff members constantly gathered with their backs to us, making a lot of noise. It completely ruined the atmosphere.\n\nSince there are plenty of staff, I don’t understand why they can’t assign servers by section so they can manage each table’s pace themselves.\n\nTo make matters worse, while we were still eating dessert, blue plastic bins—like the kind used in a food court—filled with napkins and cutlery for the next seating were noisily brought to that station. It felt as if we weren’t even in their line of sight; we were simply stunned.\n\nDinner is served in two seatings for about two hours, and at that point only 1 hour 30 minutes had passed. It felt like we were being told to leave quickly, which was extremely unpleasant.\n\nThe food itself was also disappointing except for the roast beef. I don’t think it’s worth the price.\n\nThe Hotel staff at the front desk were very pleasant, which made this dinner experience all the more disappointing.

    Kamikochi Imperial Hotel

The three of us stayed in a twin Room with a sofa bed. The Room is old, but it was well cleaned and felt comfortable. We had the apple pie set in the lounge; the apples were rich and delicious. We could also get refills of coffee or tea. The French dinner was reasonably good, but it felt overpriced. The Japanese breakfast also seemed quite expensive for what was offered. Since this is a mountain resort, I understand it’s different from a city Hotel. Most of the staff were pleasant, but one male staff member we asked to take a photo in front of the Hotel when we were leaving clearly seemed bothered and didn’t smile, which was disappointing for a Hotel staff member.

It was my first stay in 45 years.

While I appreciate the Hotel’s history, I strongly felt that improvements are needed. The Room had no air conditioning, so when we opened the window with the screen, many moths came in and it was truly unpleasant. We chose Japanese cuisine for both dinner and breakfast, but I was surprised at how poor it was for the price—it was far below expectations. It also felt like the staff relied on having more people rather than providing better service. I sincerely hope the Hotel management will make improvements.

    Wonderful Hotel

Although it was only a one-night stay, it was a truly wonderful Hotel. We had made a Reservation for two Rooms with two guests each, and they kindly prepared connecting Rooms for us. All amenities were provided, and we enjoyed an elegant, comfortable stay without any inconvenience. The Hotel staff were outstanding—front desk, concierge, shop staff, and restaurant team—thank you all for creating such a pleasant atmosphere.

    Multiple Night Stays are recommended.

This was my fifth visit, the first in a long time since the COVID-19 pandemic. I fondly remembered the French toast with honey and the roast beef carving performance at dinner, and thought “Oh!” at the newly introduced mantelpiece lighting ceremony. It’s a Hotel that keeps evolving little by little, yet still makes me want to stay again.

As expected of the Imperial Hotel.

As expected, it was a wonderful Hotel. However, the service at the restaurant was disappointing. Since it was my first time at this Hotel, I understand it may have been unavoidable, but the service at our table was completely different from the table next to us with regular guests. No one spoke to us at all, and there were no services such as bread. The staff member in charge was a young woman; no matter what I asked, she didn’t seem to understand, and her voice was so quiet that I couldn’t hear her. One dish was extremely salty, yet no one said anything. All of the bread was cold and hard—it would have been delicious if it had been lightly toasted, which was a shame. The 32,000-yen special course ended up being a disappointing experience.

Kamikochi Imperial Hotel is the best choice after all.

This was my third stay at the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, and each visit reminds me how wonderful it is. The dining, service, Room, and events were all truly lovely. This time I sent my luggage in advance, and everything was handled perfectly, allowing me to enjoy a very comfortable stay. The cake, dinner, and breakfast were all delicious and made the trip even more satisfying. Thank you very much.

    Everything was perfect.

We truly had a wonderful time. Ever since visiting Kamikochi with my family as a child, I had been hoping to return someday, but the years passed without the chance. My husband encouraged me, saying it’s a truly beautiful place, and we happened to find an available Room this time—so my wish finally came true. I had hoped for a Room with a balcony, but it wasn’t possible. Even so, the meals were outstanding—more delicious than at Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel—and we were very satisfied. On the second day the weather improved, and we saw scenery so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. I would love to visit again. We are sincerely grateful for both the breathtaking views and the thoughtful care shown by the staff.

It fell short of my expectations in many ways, but...

First, there was a strong cigarette smell around the entrance. Once inside the Room, there was an unpleasant odor from the bed linens that seemed to come from fabric softener. When I opened the window, an even stronger smell—cigarettes plus something else—came in. The staff did try their best to address it, but… Dinner: Because my Reservation was made at the last minute, I was told the main dining room would be available from 19:45, so I went to a casual restaurant without a Reservation. I was shocked by the rice served with the main dish. Perhaps the water quality is an issue—I remembered that during the day, even the water in the Azusa River didn’t feel as cold as expected. What I did like was the balcony accessible from my Room. Unfortunately, due to early-morning weather, most of the Hotaka mountain range was hidden by clouds, but it was completely windless and surprisingly quiet. Listening to several kinds of wild birds singing felt like being in another world. Thank you very much.

    Exceptional Hospitality

It was hard to secure a Reservation, so staying here was a long-awaited wish come true. As expected, the Imperial Hotel delivered its consistently high standards. The staff’s warm yet professional hospitality made for a truly comfortable stay. The French dinner was excellent in both taste and portion size. I can clearly see why this Hotel has been loved for so many years. Next time, I hope to enjoy a relaxing Multiple Night Stay.

Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality.

We stay at this Hotel every year, and each season the Facilities become even more convenient to use. This year in particular, we were able to connect the TV and our smartphone, so we could listen to music and watch movies. The staff includes some younger members each year, but everyone always greeted us with a smile and took the time to speak with us and share various conversations. For meals, we enjoyed casual dining at Alpen Rose with the Imperial Hotel’s classic vegetable curry; kaiseki cuisine at Azusa-an; and an American breakfast in the dining room. Everything was delicious—we ate too much. We stayed in a spacious Room with a balcony. From the Room we could see the Hotaka mountain range, and at night we could enjoy the starry sky. It was an amazing three days. Thank you very much.

Please focus on increasing value rather than lowering the price.

It’s a wonderful historic building, but the experience inside was only average. I didn’t feel any sense of improvement, creativity, or added value. Overall, the prices are simply too high. Both the dining and the bar feel overpriced for what you get. The bar in particular: a single beer costs over JPY 2,000, and even simple cocktails are over JPY 3,000. On top of that, is there also a cover charge? In the lobby, I went to watch them light the fireplace, but once it went out that was it—the lobby was left dark. It has prestige and is a nice space, but it feels like it’s stuck 30 years in the past. I’d recommend looking at other hotels instead.

    The Best Kamikochi Stay

I was very satisfied with the Room size, furnishings, and amenities. The restaurant meals were also delicious on both days. The birthday gesture was wonderful as well. The weather was great, and I’m glad I was able to enjoy such a perfect stay. However, it was unexpectedly hot even with the windows open due to the high temperature. It was uncomfortable at night, and it was disappointing that there was no air conditioning. It made me realize that global warming is progressing more than I had expected.

My long-awaited first trip to Kamikochi—and staying at your Accommodation made everything absolutely perfect!

I had planned to visit many times but could never make it due to work and other commitments—my long-awaited dream: the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel. This time, by a happy miracle, everything in both my private and professional life fell perfectly into place, and I was finally able to visit Kamikochi for the first time—and stay overnight! The moment I saw your red roof in the distance was truly moving. The dignified presence and refined manners of every staff member, the building’s rich history and the beautifully maintained Facilities throughout, the cuisine that only an Imperial Hotel can offer, the adorable greetings from wild monkeys and birds, the wonderfully fresh, clear air and pristine river water, the excellent quality of the lovely two-tone umbrellas and rainwear available to borrow, the impressive grandeur of the fireplace and even the scent of burning wood… I enjoyed every aspect of my stay. Away from everyday life, I felt refreshed, relaxed, and truly enjoyed myself—almost like returning to childhood. In early April, I also happened to visit the Imperial Hotel Kyoto (which had just opened in March) at exactly the right time for Miyako Odori, and I was deeply impressed by the hospitality of everyone there, including the general manager. This was my first stay at the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, and once again I was profoundly moved by the history shared by Imperial Hotels across Japan, and by the pride, professionalism, and vibrant spirit of those who carry that legacy forward today. It was a truly precious experience for which I am sincerely grateful. It has given me renewed motivation to work even harder in both my career and daily life. Thank you very much for everything. With heartfelt appreciation.

As expected from the Imperial Hotel!

This was my third visit to Kamikochi, but after watching “Buratamori,” I decided to stay here at least once. I say “decided” because it’s expensive. It is expensive, but the satisfaction far exceeded the price. First, the elegant interior and furnishings that convey a sense of history have been renewed to an even higher standard, with meticulous cleaning and premium amenities. Next, truly thorough hospitality—staff always understand each guest and work seamlessly together to provide attentive service. Then there’s the quality of the meals, sweets, cocktails, and more. This Hotel perfectly embodies what a mountain Resort Hotel should be, delivering such satisfaction that you forget about the cost.

A Hotel nestled in the natural beauty of Kamikochi

I truly felt that this Hotel has offered a wonderful atmosphere for many years. Dinner, breakfast, and the cafe were all high quality and very satisfying. The music box in the Room was soothing. They also lent us trekking shoes, which allowed us to comfortably walk along the promenade, including some slightly muddy sections after the rain.

    Stay at your dream Hotel

I stayed at a Hotel I had always wanted to stay at since childhood as a retirement gift. I didn’t realize it was the first day of the season, so receiving a wonderful present was a delightful surprise. Many of the staff were young, and their polite, cheerful service made my stay very pleasant. All of the food was delicious, and the consommé soup in particular was outstanding! I would definitely like to stay again.

A Hotel with Excellent Guest Service

I have stayed at the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel several times and am always impressed by the large number of staff. While this may not be ideal from a cost perspective for hotel management, it is certainly appreciated from a guest's point of view. This time, I stayed on November 12th, close to the hotel's closing date for the season, which might explain why there were more staff present. However, during my previous stays in May and October, even with fewer staff members, I did not feel that the service level was lacking. This is a hotel located in a tourist area; however, unlike other hotels in this region, its lobby is very calm and serene. Perhaps this is because general dining guests tend to use the Alpenrose restaurant and do not frequent the lobby area much. The room design, furnishings, amenities—all were excellent—and I had an extremely comfortable stay. The meals were French cuisine with intricate ingredients and preparation methods that made them enjoyable. The roast beef came with an option for seconds; I happily had another full slice. This time’s dessert was highly elaborate in composition and brought great joy to my wife as well.

It was a very pleasant stay.

It was a very pleasant stay, thank you for your hospitality. I rated the service as 2, but this is specifically due to the service at the French restaurant during breakfast, which I would rate as one star. The staff at the dinner lounge and main counter were excellent and deserve five stars. However, regarding the breakfast staff at the French restaurant—a tall, slender young woman and a young man—I couldn't help but wonder if they truly wanted to work at a Hotel based on their attitude. That said, it remains a very lovely Hotel overall.

    Thank you very much.

I visited during my childhood and stayed again with my son. It was our first time experiencing the autumn season in Kamikochi, and we were captivated by the beautiful fall foliage and enjoyed trekking. Both my son and I became huge fans of the veal cutlet, so much so that we had it for dinner two nights in a row. We were delighted to celebrate my son's birthday with your unparalleled hospitality.

    A Memorable Hotel

I was extremely satisfied with my stay at the prestigious Kamikochi Imperial Hotel. Upon arrival, I got caught in a sudden rain while taking a walk and ended up soaking wet. Although it was before check-in time, the staff kindly provided me with a changing space, shoes, and even a shoe dryer, which was incredibly helpful. Thank you so much! The mantelpiece lighting ceremony at 5 PM was absolutely beautiful and became an unforgettable memory. The explanation of the Imperial Hotel's grand architecture was fascinating, and after dinner, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the interior of the hotel—it left a deep impression on me. The room was truly wonderful, and the bed's comfort level was exceptional. As expected from the Imperial Hotel—I would love to visit again someday. Thank you very much!

    We were fortunate.

I had planned a mountain climbing trip with tent accommodation, but the weather forecast predicted rain. I urgently searched for a Hotel the day before and found one room available at Kamikochi Imperial Hotel. Without hesitation, I completed the Reservation. Feeling it was inappropriate to wear hiking gear and boots in the main dining area, I opted for dinner at the casual dining restaurant. For breakfast, I chose a Western-style meal—the plain omelet and pancakes were exceptionally delicious. It was a perfect stay to rejuvenate my tired body after hiking. I hope to visit again next year!

    The Iconic Kamikochi Imperial Hotel

The Kamikochi Imperial Hotel I had always dreamed of. Exhausted by the summer heat, I stumbled upon an available room—perhaps someone canceled their reservation. Feeling it was fate, I immediately completed the Reservation. With its charming exterior blending seamlessly into nature and the reassurance and attentiveness of a first-class Hotel, Kamikochi Imperial Hotel truly stands out. The kindness of the staff warmed my heart, making me strongly wish to return here again. The crystal-clear mountains and rivers, star-filled skies, refreshing climate—everything was breathtakingly beautiful and made for an unforgettable trip. A wonderful Hotel worth visiting over and over again. Next time, I'll enjoy a full-course dinner and afternoon tea!

    The hotel felt somew...

The hotel felt somewhat overpriced, and the food was prohibitively expensive even at the cheapest restaurant, though it was at least acceptable. Service was mixed: some staff were enthusiastic, while others seemed uncomfortable with foreign guests. Overall, it had an old-guard, formal atmosphere as you would expect from an Imperial Hotel. Most staff were seasonal and came from the Tokyo property. The location sits between two scenic spots, which felt awkward. During the day there were many non-guest day-trippers taking photos, which was annoying. The lobby is very small and check-in was chaotic. Most guests were older. As for the rooms, there is no air conditioning, so it gets hot at night. I didn’t mind it as much as some others did. The water tasted great and left my skin feeling smooth. Facilities are minimal aside from a tiny library. Kamikochi is stunning, but not enough to justify a 6-hour bus ride for me—summer brings too many tourists. Breakfast at both restaurants was disappointing.
