    Perfect for couples' getaways.

    A few years ago, I stayed for one night with a friend. Later, I stayed again while pregnant as part of a pre-birth getaway with my spouse. Dinner was served in a private room as a course meal, and there were so many dishes that it was hard to finish everything. Since I had informed them in advance about my pregnancy, they kindly replaced the sashimi with Western-style fish dishes. It was absolutely delicious. The Onsen was incredibly relaxing, especially the large public bath which stood out as exceptional. The breakfast buffet featured freshly made croissants, omelets, and toast topped with cod roe and avocado. Everything was incredibly tasty!

    Accommodation with a high-level buffet

    Upon arrival, we were given our room number at the front desk and carried our own luggage to the room. There was no tea or hand towels provided, which made us wonder if it was due to staff shortages or cost-cutting measures. However, the buffet for both dinner and breakfast was incredibly delicious, making it clear that this is where they focus their efforts. Every dish was carefully prepared and tasty. Our family of four enjoyed trying a variety of dishes, and we were satisfied with everything we chose. The grilled chicken skewers, simmered daikon radish with sauce, seafood rice bowl at the end of dinner, cold soba noodles, clam soup with large clams—everything we ate was delightful. For breakfast, the crab miso soup, sea bream broth ramen, freshly grilled mackerel and salmon, truffle omelet, banana smoothie and kiwi smoothie as well as croissants were all truly delicious. The staff prepared everything efficiently with smiles on their faces so that we could always enjoy freshly made dishes. Considering the accommodation cost—including alcohol—it’s rare to find such an exceptional buffet experience anywhere else!

    The Best Hotel

    This was our second visit with my parents! The service was truly excellent, and every request was handled kindly without hesitation. Although the parking lot is a bit far, there is a shuttle service from your car to the hotel. The meals are plentiful and absolutely delicious. It would be great if the room amenities were more comprehensive. It would also be fantastic if draft beer or lemon sour could be purchased at the shop downstairs.

    Impressed by the exceptional service of this historic Ryokan.

    On the first day, we stayed at another accommodation in Akiu, which was also wonderful, but we were truly impressed by the high level of service at Sakan. The bath was very clean, spacious, and allowed us to relax. It was great that there were various water temperatures available. Being able to use it 24 hours a day was also very convenient. The meals were served buffet-style with freshly prepared dishes that we could enjoy hot. The free shuttle service from Sendai Station was also very convenient. I would love to bring my mother next time!

    Sakan is synonymous ...

    Sakan is synonymous with Akiu Onsen, and I always stay here whenever I visit Sendai. I feel they are continuously making changes to meet guests' needs. The dinner half-buffet offers an abundance of food that leaves you completely satisfied. However, it was disappointing that the fish in the half-buffet was served cold. Since all the dishes are delicious, it would be better if warm dishes were served warm and cold dishes were served cold. The room was spacious, and the Onsen provided a relaxing experience. I look forward to staying here again. Thank you for your excellent hospitality!

    The half-buffet option might be surprisingly good.

    The meal was a half-buffet, so I didn't have high expectations, but for the main dish, I chose grilled beef tongue and salted grilled Pacific saury. The buffet included items like seafood bowls and tempura, all prepared efficiently in a live kitchen format. Although it was crowded, the quick turnover prevented any frustration. All alcohol was free-flowing, so I ended up drinking a bit too much. The venue is spacious but well-partitioned, creating a private atmosphere despite the lively environment—perfect for solo travelers. For breakfast, I was seated on the valley side with access to the terrace, making it an enjoyable way to start my day. The large public bath varied between the first and second days; those seeking an outdoor bath might find it less satisfying. While yukata were provided as loungewear within the hotel premises, I would have appreciated separate pajama-style sleepwear. Regarding shuttle service: It seemed insufficient given the size of the Hotel and should be reconsidered in terms of frequency and capacity. On my return trip, reservations were fully booked; there was even a line at Sakan-mae bus stop. Although local buses passing by other hotels had plenty of space when they arrived here, it felt uncertain whether we could board or not. Other hotels seem to manage better with their shuttle services—this is something worth reviewing. Overall impression: This feels like a traditional large-scale Hotel catering more towards younger groups or larger parties than individual travelers looking for tranquility.

    The meals are excellent!

    As rumored, the meals were excellent. The entrance was also wonderful, and the variety of baths was enjoyable. However, the Room was honestly nothing special, and I was surprised that the door resembled a fireproof door. Overall rating would be around above average.

    It was a very good accommodation.

    The exterior had a slightly old-fashioned look, but from the entrance to the room, everything seemed to have been completely renovated and was very new and clean. It also had a sense of grandeur typical of an established hotel, which was wonderful. The garden was spacious and well-maintained. The room was large and very comfortable. Being on a lower floor, the view was slightly disappointing, but everything else was perfect. The bath had smooth water, and after soaking in the Onsen, I felt a unique sense of relaxation that allowed me to enjoy long hours of sleep for the first time in a while. Meals were served buffet-style with main dishes brought to your table upon selection. I chose Wagyu steak as well as grilled sweetfish and shrimp—both were extremely delicious. The hotel staff were all kind and made my stay very pleasant. If I may mention one minor point: the slippers were slightly difficult to walk in. Still, when I visit Akiu Onsen again, I will definitely choose this place. Thank you for everything!

    If you're staying in Akiu, choose this accommodation.

    This was my first visit. The staff at the entrance, front desk, and dining area were all very attentive and welcoming. The onsen was spacious and relaxing, with excellent main bath facilities. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the partitioned seating allowed for a leisurely dining experience. If you're visiting Akiu Onsen, staying at this accommodation is definitely a great choice!

    It was excellent.

    The meals and baths were absolutely satisfying. Both the meat and fish at dinner were excellent. As for breakfast, everything was delicious, and you can enjoy unlimited beer and wine in the morning. It truly deserves to be called the best breakfast in Japan. I was also deeply impressed by the staff's attentiveness and thoughtful service. Thank you very much! I would love to visit again if I have the chance.

    It was great.

    The bath's water volume and quality were impressive, and perhaps because it is new, the cleanliness was excellent. Unfortunately, I missed the chance to visit Kawara no Yu due to overlooking the directions, which I regret. I'll make sure to visit next time. The meals were creative and served in a buffet style, but they never felt repetitive or boring. I especially enjoyed the breakfast sandwiches as they were unique; I hope you continue to expand this variety in the future. As mentioned in other comments, while it's understandable that room aging is inevitable and challenging to address, since this was an upgraded trip for me, having a private toilet that is spacious and clean would have been even better... This might be particularly noticeable for those accustomed to staying at newer hotels recently. With some spare time on hand, I enjoyed exploring the koi pond and learning about the history of Sato family—it was very engaging. Also, I only realized about visiting the lounge after arriving (regretting not checking your website thoroughly), so next time I'll make sure to go early and relax there properly.     I had a relaxing time.

    I had work in Sendai City but decided to stay here for the first time. I was amazed by the vastness of the facility. The staff's smiles and delicious meals made me feel so relaxed after work that I almost felt guilty for coming alone without my family. There were so many baths that I got a bit lost, so clearer guidance would be helpful. However, the wonderful bath experience more than made up for it, and I had a fantastic time overall. Next time, I’d like to visit with my family.

    Less glittery.

    The accommodation was my regular stay about 35 years ago during a business trip to Kakunodate, Akita. At that time, the staff wore kimonos for service, but now they wear office uniforms, giving it the atmosphere of a typical city hotel. Since I came to an Onsen accommodation, I felt slightly disappointed. For meals, I chose the half-buffet option. The beef tongue and sashimi were delicious among other dishes. The view below has changed significantly compared to 35 years ago with more houses built; this might be due to people moving from coastal areas to mountain areas after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The bath remains unchanged from before, but having space for placing buckets would make it more convenient for elderly guests. There was a sign at the entrance of the bath prohibiting tattooed guests from entering; however, it wasn’t enforced and created an unpleasant atmosphere in the Onsen as there were tattooed individuals present before as well. My room was on the 9th floor of the old building; however, I found that the toilet seat was low and quite outdated in design. It seems this place was used during a G7 Summit meeting before. Overall though, it was reasonably priced.

    Delicious meals and young staff who are polite and friendly...

    The staff, mostly young, were polite and kind from the welcome to the dining area and even when seeing us off the next day. We are especially grateful for their gentle care as we had our 1-year-old grandchild with us. Above all, the meals, including the half-buffet, were excellent, and our entire family was very satisfied. We stayed in a room at Kagetsukan(?), but apart from the beds, the room felt outdated and not quite worth the price. That aside, it was an accommodation that made our whole family say they would like to visit again.

    Highly satisfied!

    The shuttle service ride was long, but I enjoyed the scenic views from the window. Upon arrival, I was excited by the authentic Onsen Ryokan atmosphere. Although it was unfortunate that the free lounge was fully occupied and unavailable, I was amazed by the variety of dishes at dinner. The food was delicious, and unlimited beer made it even more satisfying. Breakfast was crowded but offered a wide selection of dishes that I thoroughly enjoyed. I also had a relaxing time in the bath. This is an accommodation worth supporting—thank you, Sakan!

    First Time at Akiu Onsen

    For my trip to Sendai after a long time, I was torn between staying in Matsushima or Akiu Onsen. Since Sakan in Akiu Onsen was recommended, I made a reservation. I arrived at the accommodation via shuttle service from Sendai Station. The lobby had high ceilings and a pond with koi fish, giving it an impressive interior that exuded history and tradition. After enjoying a drink in the lounge, I went to my room on the 8th floor—a renovated Japanese-Western style room that was bright with great views. The bed was in a private space near the entrance which felt slightly cramped, so I spent most of my time in the bright and open Japanese-style area instead. The onsen had three bathing areas, including a spacious women-only bath starting at 8 PM which was very relaxing; I also enjoyed it again in the morning. Meals were served as a half-buffet style with freshly fried tempura and grilled skewers prepared by young staff members—it was excellent! The thick and tender beef tongue, famous in Sendai, was delicious as well. Drinks were free-flowing too, making it satisfying for those who enjoy alcohol. Breakfast featured an abundant variety of vegetables along with freshly baked bread and made-to-order omelets—perfect for ryokan dining satisfaction. The staff were kind and attentive throughout my stay. Although this trip was solo due to work commitments, this is definitely an accommodation I'd like to visit again!

    Perfect for an adult getaway.

    The hospitality was pleasant, and the Japanese-style room was spacious with a great view. Since the facility is quite large, wheelchairs are available for those who may have difficulty walking, which can be helpful. However, considering that many elderly guests stay here, there are some areas that could be improved: - The bathroom door on B3 is difficult to open due to poor alignment, and it’s unclear which side opens. Elderly guests seemed confused and had to assist each other. - Several people mentioned they couldn’t figure out their location after exiting the elevator due to a lack of clear signage. Larger signs might help make navigation easier for elderly guests. - The provided map was particularly hard to understand when locating the baths. - Upon arrival, there was a free drink service; however, since prices were listed on the menu without clear indication of what’s complimentary, it felt awkward as a guest to ask about it directly. - For those using canes or with limited mobility during breakfast buffets, carrying trays seemed challenging—perhaps offering wagons or tray carts would make this more convenient. Overall service and manners from staff were excellent and pleasant throughout our stay. Dinner portions were appropriate in size and very delicious!

    The Onsen was excellent.

    I stayed at the historic Sakan accommodation in Akiu Onsen, as I had always wanted to visit. The onsen was amazing; I’ve been to many, but this was the first time my body felt warmed to the core. I stayed in Hitenkan, and the Japanese-Western style room was spacious and comfortable. The meals were delightful, especially the freshly baked croissants and apple pie. One small suggestion would be to provide more towels in the bathroom.

    I stayed in the Japanese-Western style room at Hishokan, but it was quite different from the photos. It seemed like a Japanese-style room converted into a Western-style one, and the toilet and sink were far away. The faucets also felt outdated. The meals were a half-buffet style, and I enjoyed the course where you could choose from six dishes. The tempura at the buffet was freshly fried and crispy, which was delicious. However, it was disappointing that there were limited alcoholic options in the free drink menu. The croissants at breakfast were very tasty.

    A trip with three friends reuniting after decades. Although we couldn't book the room we initially wanted, we chose your accommodation for our stay in Akiu. The lobby exudes a sense of history and the staff provided excellent service. However, despite arriving early, there was no option to check into the room earlier. At the very least, offering an early welcome drink would have been appreciated. We could only secure a room in Kagetsukan and were concerned—and unfortunately, our concerns were valid. While the building's age is understandable, amenities should be updated. An air purifier is essential, as well as replacing electric kettles and futons. The closet floor was dirty; placing a sheet or similar covering would help. Even if it's a lower-tier room, it should meet certain standards. As this is not a casual ryokan but one with prestige, towels should be available in the large communal bath area. Additionally, while other ryokans offer various post-bath services or refreshments, having only water felt lacking. Despite several disappointments, what redeemed our experience was the food. Though there were long lines and poor flow at times around buffet stations, every dish was delicious with high-quality ingredients—both dinner and breakfast were enjoyable. However, we were initially seated at tables far from the buffet area in what seemed like a banquet hall setting despite having someone with mobility issues among us. After requesting changes due to inconvenience caused by distance from food stations or seating arrangements unsuitable for quiet dining preferences (we are three women in our 60s), adjustments led us into semi-private space instead eventually improving things slightly yet wondering how seating assignments work overall since neither noisy children nor rowdy groups nor budget travelers applied here? Overall impression remains positive regarding historical charm alongside good meals yet operational scale might feel overwhelming sometimes still grateful enjoyed time spent thank-you much hospitality shown!

    Quite disappointing.

    I visited with high expectations for the renowned Ryokan Sakan. Perhaps because it was the start of check-in time, the front desk staff seemed busy and gave a somewhat formal impression. However, the lounge staff were very pleasant and shared many stories about Sakan's history. The room was spacious, very clean, and comfortable. The bath on basement level 3 had only four washing stations despite the number of rooms in this Ryokan, which left us waiting in the cold. On the other hand, the bath on the first floor was spacious and very clean. Dinner included a half-buffet style meal along with alcoholic beverages. However, dishes were placed outside of the main venue as well, making it confusing and inconvenient to access. A simple map indicating where everything is located would have been helpful. The combination of half-course meal and half-buffet felt incomplete; while each dish was delicious, it left an unsatisfactory impression overall. Regarding alcohol options like beer or wine—unfortunately, they were comparable to wines sold at convenience stores for around 800 yen. To enjoy better drinks required additional charges. I believe offering higher-quality beverages even at slightly higher prices would be more appropriate. Breakfast offered a wide variety of options; notably, their croissants were exceptionally delicious. What surprised me most during this stay was when I requested ice from reception—they directed me to pick it up from their wine bar instead. Upon doing so there myself later again—I was informed that charges apply starting from my second request! While charging for subsequent deliveries directly brought into rooms might seem reasonable—it felt disappointing being denied complimentary ice even after personally retrieving them onsite! Overall experience fell short compared against past visits here—as echoed by similar feedbacks shared elsewhere online too sadly reflecting noticeable decline across various aspects over time leaving behind rather underwhelming memories unfortunately!

    Overall, I was satisfied, but it was disappointing that the men's bathing time at the Kagetsukan first-floor large bath was only a short period from arrival until dinner, so I couldn't fully enjoy it. I understand the gender-swapping system, but I would appreciate a little more consideration for men's bathing times. The meals were delicious and the staff's service was excellent. Including a revisit to the Kagetsukan first-floor large bath, I would like to stay again.

    I had a great time during my trip with friends. The dining area is semi-private, so you don't have to worry about making eye contact with others, and there are several Onsen baths, so it was never too crowded. It had been a while since I stayed at a large Ryokan, but the guests were mostly calm and composed people, allowing me to relax more than I imagined. I am very satisfied. Both dinner and breakfast were truly luxurious and delicious; I was impressed. Additionally, the staff's wonderful smiles and behavior as service professionals made for a pleasant departure. (The Room door was heavy possibly due to fireproofing or soundproofing? The handle was unique and difficult to use, so I rated the guest room part 4 stars.) I think this Property is recommendable to family and friends.
