    The service was very attentive.

The Room amenities are minimal, so please check what is provided in advance. As for the baths, there were not enough washing stations and we sometimes had to wait in line, so it may be smoother if you choose based on the features of each bath area. The meals were very delicious, and the service was polite, so we felt comfortable throughout our stay. Thank you very much.

    I felt truly welcomed.

We stayed at Kagetsukan this time. It is a historic Hotel, but without any pretentious atmosphere. Everyone on the staff—those who picked us up by car, the front desk team, the guides inside the building, the pool staff, the dining staff, and even those leading the evening history tour—provided warm hospitality. Fresh flowers were arranged throughout (which made me very happy), and there were chairs and resting spaces placed here and there, making us feel truly cared for as guests. Everything was impeccably clean, and the baths were wonderful—we could relax completely. The welcome drinks came with a wide selection of options; each one was carefully prepared and delicious. What left the strongest impression was the breakfast buffet. In addition to a wide variety of tasty dishes, a comparison tasting of Tohoku waters, and fun live-kitchen items like freshly made onigiri and ramen prepared on the spot, there were also dishes from trainees’ home countries. I believe it was Myanmar cuisine on the day we visited; a handwritten sign with photos explained which trainee made which dish, and it warmed my heart. (It was so good that I went back for seconds.) We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

The quality of both dinner and breakfast is excellent. Unfortunately, the Room and Facility feel a bit dated. The service is good.

    The room is old.

The entrance and the first-floor museum are impressive, but the Room is outdated and in need of renovation. Both the beds and futons are in very poor condition.

    A Historic Accommodation

It was my first time visiting Akiu Onsen. I was able to relax and enjoy a leisurely stay at this historic Accommodation. Our Room was a Japanese-Western style room in the Hiten Wing. As it is an old, historic Accommodation, the facilities felt dated overall, but the Room was spacious enough. What concerned me was that for three guests there was only one hand towel (very thin), and although the floor cushions looked fluffy, they seemed to have little filling and were uncomfortable to sit on. The large public bath was spacious and clean. The ReFa shower head was great. Dinner was a kaiseki meal at the dining area. I appreciated having a private room, but the air conditioning unit was noisy so we asked for it to be turned off. Also, there appeared to be black mold or dust stuck to the ceiling directly above our table, which made me worry it might fall onto us, so I couldn’t fully enjoy the meal. There were many dishes, but I think it would be better to reduce two items and improve overall quality. I imagine operations are challenging with so many rooms, but I hope they will keep working hard.

Returning for the first time in 20 years

Visiting Sendai for the first time in 20 years, I chose to stay at Sakan again, a place full of fond memories.\nThe Onsen and Facility areas have been beautifully renovated, and amenities like ReFa hair dryers made the stay extremely comfortable. What impressed me most was the half-buffet. The beef tongue steak and sea urchin I selected as the main dishes were outstanding—being able to enjoy both meat and seafood so luxuriously left me completely satisfied. The buffet also offered a wide variety of options, with many live-kitchen stations, which made it wonderful to enjoy freshly prepared dishes. There was also an excellent selection of drinks and desserts, keeping me excited throughout.\nIt had been 20 years since my last visit, but it turned into an amazing experience that far exceeded my expectations. I would definitely love to return!

    Timeless Onsen Accommodation

A beautifully situated accommodation where you can feel the timelessness of nature. The three Onsen baths in the building are also wonderful. The food was delicious and very satisfying. I’d love to visit again.

Fully satisfied with this historic, long-established Ryokan

In early July during the rainy season, four of us stayed for one night with my 94-year-old mother and my sister. From the elegant entrance and the many historic furnishings to the post-bath lounge, three different bathing areas, kaiseki served in a private room, and the pleasant hospitality, everything was wonderful. The location is also very convenient—just a short drive from Sendai Station—with a convenience store across the street. It’s only a few minutes on foot to Super Saichi, famous for its ohagi, and Akiu Otaki Falls and Jogi Nyorai Saihoji Temple are both within an hour. Considering all of this, the price felt very reasonable and we were extremely satisfied.

    As times change…

What we liked 1. The breakfast was excellent. 2. The hot spring water was great. 3. The Room and the view were wonderful (Hiten). 4. The service was reasonably good. What disappointed us 1. Dinner (private room) seemed pre-prepared, which was disappointing. 2. There is still a lingering sense of complacency after the summit event. 3. Guests’ expectations for both food and service are high; we hope you will continue to learn and improve. 4. An old Accommodation where the hot spring guardian also runs a business on-site. We sincerely hope this Ryokan will be transformed into a truly great one as soon as possible.

A great Accommodation with a sense of history

First, the dining: it’s a buffet, and it was excellent! For dinner, being able to choose one fish main and one meat main was amazing. The quality of everything besides the mains was also very high, and drinks were free-flow, so no matter how many stomachs I had, it still wouldn’t have been enough. Breakfast was also outstanding—freshly baked croissants, made-to-order omelets and rice balls, and more. It was so good that I overate again. I’d never thought fu could be delicious before, but the Sendai grilled fu was great, so I bought some to take home. Speaking of souvenirs, Akiu’s famous ohagi is just a few minutes away on foot, so it was nice to pick some up on a morning walk. Now about the Onsen: Kaharano-yu—the only 100% free-flowing natural hot spring in the building—was wonderful! However, under the current schedule women can only use it until 11 p.m. on the night of arrival, which is disappointing. The next day starts with men’s hours early in the morning, so I couldn’t use it then either... I came specifically for a free-flowing hot spring experience, so this point was extremely disappointing. The other large baths and open-air baths are spacious and clean, but you can still smell chlorine. There are plenty of thoughtful touches that women will appreciate—like the steam sauna and silk bath; ReFa hair dryers; POLA shampoo and conditioner; and stylish vanity layouts—but still... The talk from 8 p.m. (the Sato family and Sakkan’s history) was absolutely worth attending. I was deeply impressed by how their treasured sacred flame has been protected without ever going out, as well as by the historical exhibits. This is something newer hotels simply can’t replicate, so I think it deserves more promotion. Lastly: I really appreciated the Shiogama City sightseeing coupon and complimentary local sake during my stay! The sake was delicious—it made me want to visit Shiogama next time too. I also thought these kinds of collaborative efforts with other areas were wonderful. Please keep up the great work!

    A relaxing Accommodation.

The free-flowing Onsen fed directly from the source offered a luxurious time while gazing at the river. The Room was also very soothing, filled with the fresh scent of blue tatami. The cuisine was wonderfully presented, letting us enjoy freshly prepared dishes from the live kitchen. We enjoyed plenty of delicious seasonal dishes. Breakfast also had such a wide variety that it was hard to choose, and everything was delicious. This is an Accommodation we would love to visit again.

    This was my first st...

This was my first stay here with my wife. They strictly keep check-in at 3:00 PM, and since we arrived early I initially wished we could enter sooner if a cleaned Room was available, but I took it as proof that they clean thoroughly. What truly stands out about this Accommodation is the food! It’s a half-buffet, and the buffet selection in particular is outstanding—better than any buffet I’ve had before. The breakfast buffet is just as amazing. I was genuinely impressed. This Accommodation is worth visiting for the meals alone—please be sure to enjoy the food before you leave.

Lobby staff who follow the manual to the letter

We have been using IKYU through my wife’s member account for our Reservations, but this time I booked about 1.5 months in advance. Regarding the price, I didn’t expect that booking just 2–3 days before could sometimes be a better deal. (I was told there was a group of around 200 guests staying that day.) I understand that pricing may vary depending on availability at the time, but I found the lobby staff’s response somewhat unpleasant.

The staff were excellent in every aspect, from the Shuttle Service to the restaurant, baths, and historical tour, and we truly enjoyed our anniversary trip. However, to fully relax at the Accommodation, as others have mentioned, yukata alone is not enough; pajamas are also needed. This may be asking too much, but having pajamas or samue would have made our stay even more comfortable. Also, we had gyutan grilled at the restaurant, but it was not served piping hot, which was disappointing. We had been really looking forward to it, so it was a shame.

Done! The perfect regular venue for our class reunion.

I stayed at Sakkan for the first time this January. Rather than advertising it as all-inclusive, they quietly offered alcohol as part of the half-buffet, which made me feel it was truly a long-established Ryokan. The food was delicious, and I wanted to come back. So in March I stayed for a second time with classmates to relax in the Onsen. The food was again excellent, and the seating was separated by partitions, so we could enjoy our meal slowly while chatting without seeing other guests. My friends all agreed they want to return as well—we’ve decided to hold our class reunion at Sakkan every year, and we’re already looking forward to our next stay. Thank you very much.

An Accommodation to Enjoy Great Meals

Room: It felt a bit dated, but it wasn’t inconvenient and the view was great. However, I would like things like torn shoji screens to be repaired. I came with high expectations, so it was a little disappointing. Baths: The riverside open-air bath is said to be fed by a natural hot spring source, and it was nice being so close to the river. However, I couldn’t help wondering whether it might be visible from the bridge. The baths in the Kagetsu Wing were interesting, with ReFa showerheads and hair dryers, as well as both dry and mist saunas. The open-air baths felt slightly underwhelming. I especially liked Natori-no-Yu because it’s quiet and relaxing. Meals: Both breakfast and dinner were excellent. The selectable meat and fish dishes were high quality, and I really enjoyed them. It was such a fun time that I ended up eating too much. The buffet area was also wonderful, with many items cooked fresh on the spot. Overall: For me, this Accommodation is all about enjoying great food. It was my first time experiencing the Sakkan history tour and the illumination show, and they were very enjoyable.

    A Historic Accommodation

While the Room does feel a bit dated, I could really sense the Accommodation’s history. It was also great to have an opportunity to hear about the Accommodation’s history at night (however, since you can get chilled after the bath, I would have liked the talk to be a bit shorter, and I was surprised that the lights were turned off at 9:00 PM even if the talk was still in progress). The breakfast and dinner buffet were very delicious. The buffet was more than enough for me, so I probably didn’t need the additional dinner items like appetizers, sashimi, or a main dish. The electric kettle in my Room was very worn out and the coating inside was peeling off, so I didn’t feel safe using it. I hope anything related to safety and health will be replaced with new items. There is Shuttle Service from Sendai Station and the food is great, so I think I will stay again.

The Onsen and meals are excellent.

We stayed as a family because the Reviews and reputation were good. As expected, the quality of the Onsen water at Natori no Oyu was excellent, and it left our skin feeling smooth. We also enjoyed the buffet-style meals—everything was delicious. What concerned us was that the Ryokan overall felt a bit old, and the toilet and sink in the Room were about on par with those at low-priced Accommodation. The Ryokan staff member’s explanation of dinner time slots at check-in was incorrect. When we contacted the front desk again to confirm, we were told they had not given such incorrect information. In addition, explanations about choosing the main dish at dinner differed depending on the staff member. Also, when we tried to go to a convenience store late at night, even though they were reception staff, they could not direct us to the exit. Overall, we found the service quality from staff somewhat disappointing. If you don’t expect much in terms of personal service and simply want to enjoy the Onsen and meals, I think it is more than satisfying.

    About the Shuttle Service Bus

I tried to use the free Shuttle Service from Sendai Station to the Accommodation, but the outbound bus was fully booked and I couldn’t use it. Since there are only two buses per day, I would like you to reserve at least enough seats for the number of guests staying that day. On the return trip, there were seats available just before boarding, so I was able to use it.

    A bit disappointing

We stayed as a family. Perhaps because we usually stay at Hishokan, this time at Kagetsukan, despite informing them about mobility issues, dinner was served in a distant and cold banquet-like hall. It was inconvenient to walk back and forth for meals or to the restroom. The difference between the food and the Room was disappointing. The Room was hot while the rest of the facility was cold. Next time, we will only stay at Hishokan.

    I was very satisfied.

We stayed as a three-generation family. The accommodation was well-maintained, with beautiful flowers arranged at the entrance and throughout the facility, creating an elegant atmosphere. The staff, regardless of age, were polite and efficient, making our stay very pleasant. We chose a Japanese-Western style room in the Hitenkan building. However, due to the centralized air conditioning and room layout, it was cold at night, so we borrowed a heater. Once we turned on the heater, it warmed up quickly and was very helpful. For dinner, we were initially unsure about the half-buffet style but were pleasantly surprised by how delicious everything was—freshly prepared dishes that impressed us all. Although there were some lines due to crowding, service moved efficiently and freshly made dishes could be ordered without much wait time. It didn’t bother us at all thanks to their thoughtful arrangements showing their dedication to meals. The semi-private seating also allowed us to dine comfortably in peace. Breakfast was just as delicious as dinner with every dish being delightful! Our entire family left feeling extremely satisfied with our stay at Sakan!

    An Established Tradition

This is a traditional accommodation in Akiu Onsen. From the shuttle service from JR Sendai Station to the exceptional hospitality, onsen, and meals, every aspect of our stay was flawless. We are deeply grateful for their kindness. The highlight was undoubtedly the meals! Both dinner and breakfast were served in a half-buffet style, not only delicious but also more than enough to satisfy. It was our first time visiting Akiu Onsen, but it is conveniently close to Sendai and has a wonderful atmosphere as an onsen destination. If we visit Sendai again, we would love to stay here once more.

If it's Akiu, Sakan is the choice.

If you're staying in Akiu Onsen, Sakan is the place to go. The lobby, with koi swimming and captivating art pieces, sets high expectations with its elegant design. It exudes the grandeur of a large Ryokan. The flower arrangements throughout were lovely, inspiring me to take photos for ideas to replicate at home. The Kagetsukan in the old building had clean rooms but retained a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. However, opening the bathroom door revealed a strong sewage smell. The fire door-like entrance was inconvenient, and the retro key was difficult to use. On a positive note, the bed was very comfortable. The large public bath is luxurious and spacious overall; though there’s a slight chlorine smell typical of such facilities. The riverside open-air Onsen fed by natural hot springs was exceptional! Unfortunately, it closes early for safety reasons and alternates between men’s and women’s use—so I could only enjoy it once. Meals were served as a half-buffet during this winter season with options like Seri Nabe (Japanese parsley hot pot), which delighted me! However: - The buffet lacked excitement or variety that makes you want to try everything at once despite good quality dishes. - Presentation felt plain while movement flow wasn’t ideal; choosing food required peeking closely at counters. - Waiting for live kitchen preparations while standing wasn’t enjoyable personally either. Although I opted out from traditional Kaiseki meals hoping better portion control via buffet-style dining—the display seemed underwhelming compared against expectations elsewhere. That said—the dining venue itself stood out uniquely grand compared other accommodations! Breakfast offered delicious options including authentic bread alongside morning beer/wine availability—a rare treat indeed! Yet one minor inconvenience arose: Juice/milk pitchers placed higher made pouring into cups challenging especially elderly/less physically able guests might struggle lifting heavy containers above waist height without assistance nearby staff appeared busy unable help directly perhaps hygiene reasons led elevated placement? Lever-operated dispensers would simplify process greatly instead! Visiting such renowned Accommodation fulfilled long-held desire leaving satisfied overall enjoying both Onsen experiences culinary delights amidst luxurious surroundings perfect indulgence escape mood rejuvenation relaxation alike!

    "Chanson"

The dining venue "Miyagino" now features Chanson as its BGM! The volume was pleasant, allowing us to enjoy a relaxing breakfast and dinner. This time, we chose a room with a bed in the Kagetsukan building. The layout was excellent, and we had a comfortable stay. We look forward to visiting again soon!

It was a mini trip f...

It was a mini trip from Sendai, but I had a blissful time. The service and cuisine were attentive and satisfying. If there had been live piano performances or similar entertainment in the lounge after dinner, it might have added an even more elegant touch to the experience. This is an accommodation I would love to stay at again. I am also planning to enjoy Sakan's New Year's Osechi this year-end. It seems like I'll have a wonderful time reminiscing about this mini trip!

    Autumn Girls' Trip

It was a trip for four with three friends. The accommodation was very spacious and luxurious. The onsen was also excellent. We chose a private room for dinner, but since there were many guests, it seemed inevitable that there were fewer freshly prepared dishes served. It felt like appetizers and other items had been set on the table quite some time before, which was disappointing. Recently, I’ve only stayed at accommodations with fewer rooms, so I understand that such things might happen at larger-scale accommodations with more rooms. The breakfast buffet was delicious. However, we had to wait over 10 minutes to be seated for breakfast, which made us a bit anxious as we had to catch the shuttle service bus on time. It would be helpful if during check-in they informed guests about group bookings and advised arriving early or planning accordingly. Other than dinner, it was a satisfying accommodation experience overall!

    This time, invite your friends.

Thank you for hosting us during our second stay. The friend I invited was also very pleased. This time, we were able to enjoy the riverside open-air bath that we couldn't visit last time due to the typhoon, and it was truly a dream come true. The natural hot spring water was rich and gentle on my sensitive skin, leaving it feeling soft and rejuvenated. We opted for the half-buffet this time, and the riverside seating provided a relaxing atmosphere where we could also enjoy some unique dishes. If I may say so, I found the overall flavor of the dishes slightly on the sweeter side, even as someone from Kansai who is accustomed to sweet flavors. Overall, your staff were friendly (it was refreshing to see many young and energetic Japanese staff these days), making our stay enjoyable. Thank you very much!

    It was a disappointing stay.

I stayed for the first time with my elderly mother. Dinner was described as a half-buffet, and based on other reviews, I expected semi-private seating. However, on the day of our visit, group guests were seated in the semi-private area while individual guests were directed to an adjacent banquet hall. The buffet area was far from our table, and the fish dish I selected was cold. Additionally, most of the buffet items were not particularly appetizing. For breakfast, after confirming our room number, we were initially guided to an outdoor seat. When I mentioned that my mother had difficulty walking, we were then moved to an indoor window-side seat. Despite there being plenty of available seats indoors from the beginning, why were we unnecessarily directed outside? Although the staff's service was commendable overall, this experience left me feeling quite disappointed.
