The newly renovated Japanese-modern bedroom was excellent.
In the latter half of a three-day weekend, our schedule opened up, so we quickly found this place and made a Reservation. We asked to Change the Reservation from the Room we had booked to a new Japanese-modern bedroom with beds—and it was absolutely the right choice. We had a very satisfying stay. We woke up at 4:00 a.m. and watched the World Cup final on the projector’s large screen. It became my favorite Room I’ve ever stayed in. The Onsen was too hot for us as a couple. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The staff were also excellent. They even walked us to our car on departure, and wiped down our windshield that had gotten dirty from the rain at night—truly outstanding hospitality. This is a Ryokan we would love to visit again.

We are truly sorry.
My elderly father, who was traveling with me, had an accident before we left. Since we were taking the train and bus, he had no pants to wear home, so I asked the front desk for help. The staff member went into the back saying, “Let me check,” and I could hear laughter and someone saying, “Right?” They then came back and told me that because there wasn’t enough time they couldn’t take us to a clothing store, and that they wanted us to leave by checkout time. In the end they offered no alternative solution and simply looked at us as if to say, “So what are you going to do?” I finally bowed my head and asked, “Could you please lend us the bottoms of a samue? I will return them later.” I am currently in my 50s, but since my 20s I have stayed many times at Tanigawa and Senjuan—first with my parents and sister, and after getting married with my parents as well as my husband and children. It was very disappointing to receive such a cold response when we were truly in trouble—especially after staying there so many times. At the very least, I wish the Ryokan had offered first by saying, “We can lend you a samue.” Because this was his first accident of this kind, my father was deeply shocked. What may have been our last family trip has become a terrible memory. I feel truly upset. Although we have stayed at Tanigawa and Senjuan countless times, I do not think we will ever stay again. These days people talk about unreasonable customer complaints (“kasuhara”), but this is not that—this is an honest impression. As the number of elderly people continues to increase, situations like this can happen not only to us but to others as well. How an Accommodation can respond in such moments is also a measure of its quality. I am simply very disappointed.

The hospitality, service, meals, guest room, and Onsen were all excellent.
From check-in to check-out, the hospitality was outstanding throughout. I was amazed by the wide range of complimentary services, including sake, coffee, juice, and miso soup. The meals were delicious and very filling. I was thrilled with the complimentary maitake mushroom tempura. Dining service was excellent as well—you could choose your fish, and the order of dishes was thoughtfully planned. Breakfast was a buffet, and every item was so tasty that I ended up eating far too much. The Room was spacious, and the open-air bath in the Room was very comfortable—I felt completely relaxed until check-out. The pouch I received is stylish, so I will treasure it. Thank you for an amazing stay. I would love to visit again.

We were able to relax and unwind at our own pace.
Our Room was No. 525 on the 5th floor. The Room had an open-air bath. The Room was spacious enough, though the building did feel a bit old in places—some tatami mats were slightly sunken, and there were areas around the large public bath’s open-air section where weathered wood could be seen… You can choose from three types of toothbrushes, but if you’re going to offer a choice, I would have preferred higher-quality options. We had dinner in the kura storehouse dining area. Since I don’t eat meat, they kindly accommodated me with salmon. We chose salt-grilled river fish and deep-fried river fish; both were delicious, and the fried one almost tasted like chicken. There was no unpleasant odor at all. There were plenty of side dishes as well, and the chawanmushi in consommé with three kinds of cheese was outstanding. The rice had a beautiful shine, and the portion size was just right. Thank you as well for the maitake mushroom tempura and butterbur sprout tempura. The futon bedding felt clean, and I slept comfortably. Even if we passed someone in the hallway now and then, there was absolutely no noise inside the Room. It was very quiet. The footbath area was also great for a change of pace, and the Osamu Dazai-themed area was lovely. Breakfast was a half-buffet style; it never got overly crowded, and it was nice to be able to choose what—and how much—I wanted. Just like dinner, the rice seemed to be cooked in a pot and was simply delicious. For lunch, we tried the dam curry—along with a placemat and shovel-shaped spoon—and enjoyed it while having fun. It would have been nice to have hair ties in addition to shower caps in the bathing area. Overall, it was disappointing that the amenities felt somewhat limited.

Thank you for your support.
This was my first visit to Tanigawa Onsen. I was able to relax at this Onsen at the foot of Mt. Tanigawa. The Onsen was amazing. I’d love to visit again in a different season. Thank you as well for the Shuttle Service—it was very helpful.

Relax with your mother
The place had a cozy, home-like atmosphere, and we were able to relax at a leisurely pace. The Onsen was not crowded, so we could enjoy it comfortably in a spacious setting. We would love to stay again. Next time, I’d like to try the complimentary sake and miso soup that I couldn’t have because I was too full. I was able to do something nice for my parents. Thank you very much.

We were very satisfied.
We stayed for one night as a family. We were truly impressed by the staff’s attentive hospitality. There were time-based services (konjac, fresh juice, and maitake mushroom miso soup), and everything was delicious. There was also a coffee machine, which my husband really enjoyed. I can’t drink coffee, so I would have been happy if there were non-coffee options as well. The Osamu Dazai gallery and the mini gallery with photo exhibits were fascinating, and I was glad to be able to use the massage chairs in the refresh room for free. I was surprised they even had a treadmill. Since we ate so much, I should have used it. The manga selection was extensive, and our son was thrilled. The Onsen had a wonderful atmosphere with great water, and every dish we had was delicious. The rare deep-fried char was especially memorable—we could eat it from head to tail. It was our daughter’s birthday, and they kindly provided sparkling wine on the house; our whole family was delighted. Choosing chopsticks was also fun. They were beautiful and easy to use—I wish I had bought a pair (they were sold at the shop). The half-buffet breakfast looked lovely served in small bowls, and the rice was delicious too. Thank you as well for even wiping our car windows when we left. This is an Accommodation we’d love to revisit in another season. Thank you for taking such good care of us throughout our stay.

The service and the in-house facilities were excellent.
Service: We were very satisfied with the prompt and flexible Shuttle Service, as well as the courteous guidance at check-in, during meals, and for the private open-air bath. Facility: Not only were the lobby and Room charming and wonderful, but the small decorations in the hallways and elevator were also excellent. The complimentary konnyaku was also very delicious.

First Visit
Usually, I stay at the annex, but this time I visited the main branch for the first time after learning about it on TV. The room and large public bath were clean, and the amenities and services like tea were excellent. Although it's hard to compare with the annex in terms of meals, this accommodation provided satisfaction beyond its price. A must-visit accommodation for fans of Osamu Dazai!

Visited twice this year.
Looking for relaxation and a peaceful retreat, this is my second visit following March this year. The perfect balance of attentive yet unobtrusive service, soothing baths, delightful meals, and the beauty of snow-covered scenery made for a truly satisfying stay.

The room renovation was wonderful.
The originally Japanese-style Room has been renovated into a very lovely space. The entrance features a spacious raised threshold with stone-patterned tiles, underfloor heating for warmth, and footlights that elevate the ambiance. The wallpaper in the Room has a charming fabric-like texture, adding to its stylish appeal. This Hotel has a very homey atmosphere and offers reasonable rates, perfect for solo travelers. In the morning, they serve maitake mushroom miso soup by the hearth and recommend adding tempura flakes for extra flavor—it was truly delicious! I’ll try making it at home too.

Everything is satisfying.
The facility is equipped with carefully selected devices, and the meals are very delicious, especially the white rice, which is surprisingly tasty. The staff were all very kind and hospitable. There were many services provided, such as a welcome drink of sake (Hakkaisan) upon arrival, which made for a highly satisfying stay. On the day of our stay, there was heavy snowfall, but the next day was clear and sunny, offering breathtaking views of the majestic snow-covered Mount Tanigawa.

Mountain
No mountain view despite being in Tanigawa. The open-air bath is surrounded by walls, offering only a view of the sky, and the Room only had a view of the road. Very disappointing.

Stink bug invasion.
First, upon exiting the elevator on the third floor, there was a musty smell. The room faced the road in front of the entrance with a view of nearby shops and houses. The window had blinds with poor light-blocking capability and was angled such that it allowed visibility into neighboring rooms. The dining area for dinner was private but close enough to hear conversations from adjacent tables. On the first night, fried sweetfish was served, but just as I squeezed lemon over it and prepared to eat, an older male staff member suddenly took away my plate. It took about 10 minutes for the next dish to arrive, during which there was nothing else on the table to eat or drink—leaving me confused and frustrated as to why my plate had been removed in the first place. The menu offered limited options, and neither quality nor taste stood out. Breakfast consisted of pre-portioned small dishes available for self-service; however, items like yogurt were so minimal that even taking two or three servings felt insufficient. Returning from an outing on the second day, I found about ten stink bugs clinging to my room's window. There were no tools provided in the room for dealing with them. Thinking about sleeping in such a room made me regret choosing this accommodation deeply—it left me feeling truly unpleasant. One positive aspect was their service of washing socks worn that day and delivering them cleanly folded at breakfast time. In conclusion: this accommodation gave off an impression of being unwelcoming toward solo travelers.

We were welcomed wit...
We were welcomed with tea and sweets, along with a warm greeting from Hakkaisan, and relaxed in the lounge before heading to our room. Later, we were touched by the adorable personalized welcome message in our room! The Onsen water was excellent, and we enjoyed it three times. Dinner was delicious, especially the deep-fried ayu fish—we ate it all from head to tail! We paired it with a sake tasting set, which made choosing the most drinkable one a fun experience. Breakfast was a semi-buffet style, and everything looked so tempting; we were particularly drawn to the natto served in straw. The staff (likely an international member) guided us politely in Japanese, making our stay very satisfying. We would love to stay again—thank you so much!

Foreigners Welcome Everywhere
I had a relaxing stay at the quiet Ryokan. The meals were delicious. However, I was disappointed to see foreign guests everywhere I went. In the past, there were no foreign guests at Ryokans. Even some staff members were foreigners, and while I understand they might be hired due to subsidies, I still prefer Japanese staff. The Japanese woman who assisted me during check-in was polite and provided excellent service.

The room was great!
I stayed at this accommodation for my first water travel experience. The room was very spacious, well-cleaned, and comfortable. The bath was at the perfect temperature, and the water quality felt gentle. For dinner, I enjoyed dishes made with local ingredients and Gunma's renowned sake, while breakfast was also satisfying with its variety. It was a wonderful accommodation that conveyed heartfelt hospitality.

Accommodation with Concerns About Cleanliness and Customer Service
I chose this accommodation to relax and refresh, as I had always wanted to stay here. The atmosphere inside was calm, and the check-in process and onsen were pleasant. However, unfortunately, several disappointing incidents during my stay made it hard for me to feel that "it was worth coming." Upon entering the room, I noticed numerous hairs and dust on the floor, and the humidifier's maintenance light was on, making it seem like cleaning had been insufficient. Since I had already used some of the amenities in the room, I did not request a room change but instead asked at the front desk if I could borrow a vacuum cleaner. As a result, I ended up carrying a vacuum cleaner myself to the third floor and cleaning as a guest. While it was my suggestion initially, I was deeply surprised and disheartened that they lent it out without any confirmation. At dinner, one of the serving staff displayed very careless service—uncertainly muttering things like "What is this again?" when explaining dishes or using casual language such as "I'll just take this since it's empty" or "Got it!" They even moved chopstick rests with bowls while serving food. This behavior disrupted both the enjoyment of meals and overall ambiance. Combined with what happened regarding my room earlier, these interactions left me feeling even more upset and unable to enjoy my stay. Although my plan included three meals per day, I canceled breakfast and lunch for the following day and decided to leave early. The accommodation offered an apology along with a refund; however, what I truly wanted wasn't "a refund" but rather sincere actions that would make me feel glad about staying there in retrospect. Learning later that someone in charge at this accommodation had been responsible for lending out that vacuum cleaner added further shock. The renovated room itself featured high ceilings with spaciousness while their large public bath felt relaxing too. Other guests seemed to be enjoying their time here; nonetheless—I sincerely hope no future visitors will have experiences similar to mine moving forward!

A stay to relax in the Onsen, an accommodation that can become even better with attention to detail.
This was my first visit to Tanigawa, and the Onsen was truly wonderful, providing deep relaxation. The meals were beautifully presented with vibrant colors, offering a visual delight as well. I stayed in a king bedroom, which turned out to be two semi-double beds placed together. However, it was spacious enough and very comfortable. The hostess's warm greeting left a lasting impression and added a personal touch to the hospitality. That said, there were two points of concern: First, during dinner service, there was an unpleasant damp smell from one of the male staff members assisting us. It slightly detracted from the dining experience despite the excellent food presentation. Second, in our room's coffee maker, used coffee beans from what seemed to be previous guests were left behind. While it's a great facility feature overall, this oversight in cleaning felt unfortunate. Nevertheless, the Onsen experience was exceptional and allowed for a relaxing stay overall. I would love to return if given another opportunity!

A Ryokan you'll want to visit again.
This was my 4th or 5th stay at this accommodation. Even though my last visit was over two years ago, the staff who always provides the shuttle service kindly greeted me with, "It's been a while." This time, I stayed in a Japanese-style room. The room had a sofa space by the window and was spacious enough for two people, even though I stayed alone. The room also had snacks and traditional side dishes that could accompany rice, offering a level of hospitality you wouldn't find at a hotel. I always look forward to enjoying their delicious meals and services like miso konjac, fresh juice, and maitake mushroom soup. This time, they also added complimentary coffee from a coffee machine and sake tasting (it was Hakkaisan this time!), making the experience even more delightful. The meals are perfectly portioned to leave you satisfied without being overly full, with local rice being particularly exceptional in taste. Of course, the onsen is another highlight—you can enjoy both indoor baths and open-air baths. During dinner time, they switch the men's and women's bath areas so you can experience both styles of baths for double the enjoyment! There is also an open-air bath available for private use at an additional cost or rooms with attached open-air baths for those seeking an upgraded experience within their budget. Additionally, there are free massage chairs and spaces stocked with manga where guests can relax in various ways. This ryokan consistently maintains its high standards of comfortable onsen facilities, clean and cozy rooms, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality through continuous effort—qualities that make it stand out among others across Japan's many onsen destinations. It's such a wonderful place that I find myself wanting to return again despite exploring other hot spring areas nationwide. Once again during this stay, I enjoyed some much-needed relaxation from daily stress. It may be some time before my next visit but I'll definitely return someday! Thank you very much!

Everything was excellent in every way.
We stayed here to celebrate my wife’s birthday. From the moment we parked, a staff member kept an eye on us, which made us feel very safe and at ease. When filling out the guest registration, the thoughtful service of tea and sweets was a lovely touch—we were tired, so it really made us happy. Many of the staff seemed to be from overseas, but their Japanese was fluent, their smiles were wonderful, and their hospitality was a perfect 10/10. The Room was immaculately cleaned, and it was clear that even the smallest details had been taken care of. The futon and the view from the window helped us relax completely. Dinner was also extremely satisfying in taste, presentation, and portion size. We added steak, so we couldn’t finish all of the shabu-shabu and felt bad about wasting it. Even the appetizers conveyed both skill and heartfelt care from those preparing them. There are many more great points to mention—the complimentary miso konnyaku, sake service, and morning maitake mushroom miso soup made us wonder how you can possibly make a profit with such generosity. When we left the Ryokan as well, you saw us off until the very end, which truly moved us. One request before our next visit: it would be helpful to have a call bell or something similar at the dinner table to get a staff member’s attention. I tried calling out “Excuse me” several times when I wanted to order drinks, but because everyone was in the kitchen my voice didn’t reach them—so in the end I had to go to the kitchen myself to place an order. That is our only disappointment. Thank you again for your truly wonderful hospitality. We sincerely wish your Accommodation continued success and all staff good health and prosperity.

A warm and welcoming accommodation
The room has been renovated with a modern Japanese style. The bed is king-sized, and the coffee maker and other appliances are by Balmuda. Being able to enjoy freshly brewed coffee in the room is fantastic. Traditional Ryokan touches like green tea, roasted green tea, pickles, umeboshi, and snacks are heartwarming. Many of the staff are from Nepal and other countries; they are young but attentive and polite. Their hospitality is something even Japanese people could learn from these days. The older Japanese staff warmly guide them in an atmosphere that feels homey and pleasant. The meal portions might be smaller compared to typical Ryokan standards (appetizers with sashimi, a small hot pot dish, warm dishes, rice, soup bowl, pickles, dessert), but it feels just right. The era of valuing quantity over quality has passed; this approach also helps reduce food waste. It seems suitable for older guests or families with young children (around 2-3 years old) rather than big eaters among younger visitors. While the food tastes good overall, it could use a bit more refinement. The footbath area and parts of the first-floor lobby have been partially renovated to blend modern elements with traditional Ryokan charm beautifully. However, areas like the hallways leading to the large public bath or lighting on each floor (the orange-toned lights make it feel slightly dim) could benefit from future updates. The Onsen water is refreshing yet slightly hot. Unfortunately, there’s no view from the open-air bath—this might be a downside for some guests. As nearby tourist spots require some distance by car to access easily, this location may appeal more to those who enjoy road biking or hiking in peaceful surroundings without distractions nearby. For anyone looking to clear their mind while enjoying nature quietly alongside relaxing Onsen time—it’s an ideal choice. Lastly: don’t miss Tenichi Art Museum next door! Visiting without prior knowledge was astonishing—it features world-class exhibits including works by Picasso, Renoir Matisse Rodin Kishida Ryusei Munakata Shiko Fujita Kitaro Rosanjin Kitaoji

It was excellent.
I stayed here after exploring Oze. Due to the typhoon, it rained continuously from midnight until checkout, but I was able to enjoy a very peaceful time while gazing at the misty mountains in the rain. The delicious meals and slightly hot Onsen were exceptional for my tired body after walking all day. During my stay, I also read "Obasute," in which your accommodation (its predecessor) appears, and it was a special experience to reconnect with Dazai's work after a long time. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again.

Best value for money
This was my first stay at this accommodation, and both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious. However, as a solo traveler, I think it would be nice if the seating arrangement for breakfast could be considered a bit more thoughtfully. Being located at the foot of Mount Tanigawa, I hope to visit again during the autumn foliage season. It would be great if I could stay at the same price even during peak season. Overall, considering the price, the quality of meals is excellent, and although many staff members were from overseas, they were all polite and provided very pleasant service. The cost performance is outstanding!

A traditional Onsen accommodation offering warmth and heartfelt hospitality.
Conveniently located near the highway, I stayed here to enjoy the onsen. This is a nostalgic onsen accommodation where you can savor local cuisine and hot springs. It is said that literary figures like Osamu Dazai once visited this ryokan for therapeutic stays, and you can enjoy its charm through displayed memorabilia and calligraphy. While the facility shows its age, the rooms have been beautifully renovated with modern furniture, lamps, and a tea and coffee set from Balmuda. The pickled vegetables served as a tea snack were a delightful touch. Many of the staff are foreign nationals but are well-trained and proficient in Japanese. However, some spoke quite quickly—perhaps due to being in training or rushing—which made it slightly difficult to follow at times; slower speech would be appreciated for better understanding. Watching senior staff guide junior members was heartwarming. As for meals, they offer simple local dishes typical of an onsen ryokan's Japanese cuisine. Those seeking luxury might find it lacking, but if you appreciate modest regional flavors, you'll likely enjoy it. The quality of the bathwater was excellent; however, drainage around the open-air bath could be improved as it seemed slippery during winter due to ice formation. Considering many elderly guests come to enjoy the baths, perhaps upgrading these facilities after renovating the rooms would be beneficial.

It has a charming atmosphere.
I stayed in a renovated Room. There was no TV, but instead, a projector was used for viewing. At night, it felt like watching a movie, which was innovative and enjoyable. I could also watch YouTube. The bath switched between male and female use while we were having dinner, which was very convenient. One side of the bath was spacious and nice, while the other side felt smaller but had a good hairdryer available. Towels were provided in the bath area, so it was great to go empty-handed. For meals, I added the meat Plan, which made for a very filling portion size; however, before getting to the meat course, dishes were served at such a fast pace that even though I tried my best to eat quickly, I couldn’t keep up and felt rushed and overwhelmed. From the meat course onward though, service slowed down significantly—so much so that even when we finished with our hot pot dish it wasn’t cleared away promptly. This might depend on individual staff members? It would be appreciated if they could better adjust to each guest’s pace. Other than that issue with meal timing adjustments: preserving traditional elements while beautifully renovating made this Ryokan feel wonderful overall; plus all staff members were kind & attentive!

Enjoy a wonderful holiday in a Room with a private open-air bath.
The staff was very kind and attentive from the moment we arrived until our departure. Thank you so much. The room was incredibly spacious and comfortable, almost too luxurious for just two people. The private open-air bath in the room was exceptionally clean, allowing us to enjoy it at any time without interruptions, all while soaking in a serene atmosphere—it was truly wonderful. Initially, the water was quite hot, so we added some cold water to adjust it; however, by morning when it rained and cooled down outside, the temperature became perfect as is. Breakfast included a variety of small dishes with generous portions, and every dish was absolutely delicious. The coffee was also excellent—I enjoyed several cups before leaving. Before dinner, we were treated to complimentary Hakkaisan sake as well. This accommodation is perfect for relaxing and experiencing an extraordinary escape from daily life at a leisurely pace. I hope to visit again someday!

This is my third stay. I have always thought that the service here is excellent for this price range of accommodation, and this time was no exception—it was so good that I felt humbled.
