    This is a Hotel I’d love to stay at again.

    This was one of the Hotels I had always wanted to stay at, and this time I was able to visit on a trip with two friends. Some parts of the building felt a bit dated, but it was wonderful, and the Room was so spacious that we almost got lost. The staff were very polite and attentive overall, but one person at the shop was unfriendly enough that it made us feel uncomfortable. There was a large amount of pigeon droppings on the balcony off the living area of our guest Room, so we kept the curtains closed; I know it may be difficult, but I think some pigeon prevention measures would be helpful. The King’s Buffet was delicious across the board—I ate too much. The bath area was also spacious and very relaxing. I would definitely like to visit again.

    A Trip to Celebrate a 90th Birthday

    We stayed here to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday. After informing you that she uses a wheelchair, you thoughtfully arranged a bath chair, an appropriate table location for meals, and even a convenient stopping spot in the parking area, making everything stress-free. Both my mother and we daughters were extremely satisfied and had a wonderful time. You also took commemorative photos for us, and even after returning home my mother looks at them fondly and says how much fun it was. Next time, I’d like to bring my mother again along with my sons’ families.

    I had a relaxing stay.

    All the Rooms were spacious and comfortable, with two large TVs installed, and the phone charging ports by the pillow were very convenient. It was easy to go to the bath without bringing anything, and there were gowns available so we could relax. It was also nice that they provided ice pops and lemon water. Dinner was fun, with a tuna carving show and a live dessert flambé demonstration. There were so many things I wanted to eat that I ended up overeating. We walked around the property and enjoyed a space that felt different from everyday life.

    I would like to stay here again.

    This was my second stay. Considering the price, I’m very satisfied. The food tastes great, and it’s enjoyable—not just a typical buffet (a “brown” fried-food festival). As for the Facility, the room key is too large and awkward to handle. If you ever renovate, I hope you can switch to a card key or a QR code key (though that might be difficult for some older guests). It will require investment and may be postponed, but I would really appreciate it.

    Facility Management

    Despite the past incident in Tokyo where someone died in a sauna, why is there no emergency button in the Palace Sauna on the first floor? The door handle seemed newer than last time I visited, but what concerned me was the lack of an emergency button—it made me feel very uneasy. Also, considering the number of guests, the sauna is far too small. While it is advertised as having a sauna, once four people are inside it is already full and no one else can enter. I saw several guests look in and then give up. Is there any room for improvement? I used to think the King’s Buffet was impressive, but recently—based on what I’ve seen on YouTube—when compared with food at three-star buffet Hotels, I feel there could be more thought put into it.

    I went there because I wanted to experience the King’s Buffet.

    I took paid leave from work and traveled from Tokyo specifically to stay at this Hotel. It was a place I had wanted to visit for a long time. The Room was spacious and comfortable, though it did feel dated. Also, having an extra Room with beds that didn’t seem necessary felt a bit wasteful. Still, it was very large overall, and I could relax and spend my time comfortably. It’s advertised as a “King’s Buffet,” but since I’ve experienced many Hotel buffets in Tokyo—and even Business Hotels now offer significantly upgraded breakfasts—I didn’t find it particularly impressive by comparison. Maybe my expectations were too high... Aside from the domestic beef, the ingredients didn’t feel especially premium, and the wine buffet selection was also low in quality. That said, the large public bath had an amazing view and a spacious layout—it was excellent. As expected for Shirahama, an Onsen resort area, the Onsen itself was very satisfying. Since it’s quite far from Tokyo, if asked whether I would go again, I’m not sure my satisfaction level is high enough to justify the trip. For those interested in art pieces, there are truly valuable works to see here, and overall it’s a Hotel I would definitely recommend.

    The food is not good.

    The exterior and lobby feel flashy, but the Room layout seems poorly planned and rough. There was an unpleasant sewage smell and cigarette odor in the Room. The meals seemed like pre-made food, likely due to no chef on site, so neither breakfast nor dinner tasted good.

    A 2-Day, 1-Night Princess Experience

    The museum tour is an absolute must. You’ll hear inspiring stories about Mr. Kawakyu’s journey, the untold stories behind each carefully selected building material, and the passion of the owner, the architect, and the craftsmen. The tour guide, Mr./Ms. O, also speaks with wonderful pride!! However, since you’ll be standing for about an hour, those prone to anemia or older guests may want to take precautions so they don’t feel faint. As for the Room and meals, they are just as satisfying as other guests have said.

    The spa is excellent.

    It’s been a while since I last stayed at Kawakyu. I enjoyed the pool and the delicious King’s Buffet—very satisfying. I’d love to come back again for a relaxing private stay.

    It was a wonderful birthday.

    We made a Reservation to spend my birthday relaxing as a couple. This was a Hotel I’d been interested in for a long time. There were various opinions in the Reviews, but I didn’t mind the age of the Facility, and the buffet offered many freshly prepared items, so everything was delicious and I was very satisfied. We also enjoyed the museum tour and visiting the wine cellar. The archive room in particular helped me understand clearly how Mr. Kawakyu came to be—honestly, I wished we could have seen even more. Because it was my birthday, they guided us to a quiet seat during the buffet, and I really appreciated that thoughtful consideration. It was a wonderful Hotel. Next time, I’d like to stay in an even better Room on a higher floor.

    The Buffet Fit for a King

    Overall, we had a very comfortable stay. The newly renovated Room was wonderful. The Shirahama view through the picture-like window felt like a painting. It helped us forget everyday life and truly relax. The Onsen left our skin silky-smooth and felt great. The ice cream after the bath was refreshingly cold and delicious. Even the hallway carpet felt luxurious—reading the description made us feel like government ministers (apparently it’s the same carpet used in Japan’s National Diet Building). Admiring the artworks added to the sense of indulgence, and we couldn’t help but smile while hugging one of the pillars said to be worth 100 million yen each. The staff were plentiful, pleasant, and always greeted us with warm smiles. As for the buffet: freshly prepared dishes were delicious, hot items were served hot, and everything was well done. The French toast and Kumano beef risotto were especially excellent. That said, since we can’t eat that much, our family felt that a buffet can be a bit tiring—though it’s a great option for those who enjoy eating plenty.

    Exotic Atmosphere · Bubble-Era Glamour · Feel Like Royalty

    I was overwhelmed by the building—it must be costly to maintain things like air conditioning. There was a small misunderstanding at check-in, but a reliable staff member stepped in and handled it perfectly. The Room was as spacious as a suite, and the toilet and other areas were thoroughly cleaned. One thing I noticed was that there were no hangers; they would be useful when you have winter coats, etc. The meals were satisfying—both the variety and portion sizes left me completely full. Since this is Wakayama, I would have liked orange juice. This is a Hotel I’d been curious about for a while; it’s great value for money and recommended. If you have a big appetite, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth. The baths operate on a rotation system, so you can enjoy two different atmospheres, and I was able to fully enjoy the historic Shirahama Onsen.

    Not bad, but…

    Even though it’s called the “King’s Buffet,” the chefs looked completely drained. There was only a brief announcement about the dessert presentation, and it was held only on the lounge side, so I was left thinking, “Huh???” I’d been waiting for that presentation as my cue to switch over to desserts and get up, so it was a bit disappointing. Maybe there were issues with the layout and guest flow. The furniture, wallpaper, and curtains have been gradually renovated over the past few years, and I think it looks beautiful. I liked how it used to be as well. That said, I was foolish to visit during spring break. At the buffet venue, some kids were spinning chairs around and playing—and their parents didn’t stop them. At the spa, kids started swimming while parents chatted as if nothing was happening. Most families were well-mannered, but having a few like that mixed in really wore me out. Still, the Kumano beef was exceptionally delicious.

    We had a wonderful stay.

    We stayed with my in-laws. Since they couldn’t move around much physically, it was great to be able to enjoy the museum and lounge inside the Hotel. All the staff were kind, and it’s a Hotel we’d love to stay at again. Personally, I was especially impressed by the blue marble columns. It was soothing for the eyes, body, and mind.

    Maybe it’s a business hotel.

    The Hotel building and artwork are wonderful, and I understand that the price is high to maintain them… But the service, Room, and meals felt overpriced. First, I was shocked at how dirty the Shuttle Service bus was. Is it your policy that the driver does not need to provide customer service? This was my first time experiencing this kind of response on a Shuttle Service bus, and it did not feel pleasant. I think you should address this properly. The bus should also be kept cleaner. And dinner… The only thing that left an impression was the sake tasting. The staff who grilled and served sushi and meat provided quite poor service, and the taste was also disappointing… The dessert was barely okay. I thought it would be all-inclusive, but it wasn’t. On top of that, when I wanted to go to a bar even if paid, there wasn’t one—so my usual nighttime enjoyment at a Hotel disappeared, which was truly disappointing. The Room was only spacious; it felt like I lost in “Room roulette.” The messy outlets and the door making a loud noise were also unpleasant… Above all, there was a distinctive smell from the pillow that bothered me so much I couldn’t sleep. The bath was very good. I chose to stay because of the castle-like building and highly rated Reviews, so I had high expectations. It ended up being quite disappointing overall—but the building itself was amazing, so I still enjoyed that part. It didn’t feel very comfortable for what is supposed to be a good Hotel, so after this one stay, I don’t think I need to return.

    Dinner was not satisfying enough.

    We have stayed here almost every year, looking forward to the “King’s Buffet.” This time, the dinner selection had clearly changed, which was disappointing. Where there used to be small side dishes, there was a display of tuna for sashimi (?), and the number of items felt reduced. The live kitchen for sashimi and sushi offered almost the same lineup—tuna, salmon, etc.—with the only difference being whether it was served as sushi or not. Also, instead of grilling the meat that was displayed as “this is what we will cook,” they took vacuum-packed meat from a refrigerator at their feet, opened the bag, and grilled it on a hot plate. It was tender and easy to eat, but I wondered if it was really the same meat as what had been shown. Even if it means reflecting this in the Accommodation rate a bit more, I hope you will bring back a buffet like before—something surprising that makes guests feel truly glad they came.

    A place you’ll want to remember for a lifetime

    A place I want to etch into my life. That’s how much I love Hotel Kawakyu. Why am I drawn to it so deeply? The almost obsessive passion poured into its creation, and the overwhelming energy of those who built it, come through vividly from this Hotel as a work of art. “The people who created another world” They are truly the coolest. There are more reasons I love it, too. This time again, we received such warm hospitality. The surprise touches took my breath away. My friend, visiting for the first time, was delighted and had a wonderful time, and we were even introduced to an adorable staff member—our circle grew, and I feel truly lucky. I tried a facial at the spa for the first time. Because I have sensitive skin, I asked for a gentle treatment, and with such soft pressure, every part of my face relaxed. Thank you for an exquisite experience. Once again, it was a fully satisfying stay overall. I’m grateful to all of your staff.

    I was happy to final...

    I was happy to finally stay at Kawakyu, a place I had always wanted to visit. Joining the guided tour also made the stay even more enjoyable, as I learned more about the Hotel’s history. There are many different styles, but I could feel the sincere attention to detail in each one, and I enjoyed it. The food was refined and delicious, just as expected. I would love to stay again.

    Family Trip

    We stayed here for a family trip and chose Kawakyu to enjoy a special, out-of-the-ordinary experience. Just as we imagined, the Hotel was incredibly luxurious—especially the entrance and lobby, which were truly breathtaking! It felt like an art museum, and we were excited from the moment we walked in. The Room was also very spacious, and we were able to relax in comfort. Above all, the food was outstanding! True to its name, the “King’s Buffet” was genuinely lavish, and we were extremely satisfied. We would love to visit again if we have the chance!

    A very disappointing Hotel

    We stayed as a family to celebrate my younger sister’s birthday. Since I don’t like old rooms, we made a Reservation for a renovated Room. However, it seemed a pigeon had laid eggs on the window and wouldn’t move. When we informed the staff, they said they wanted to enter the Room to use pigeon-repellent spray. When we returned after they finished, the entire Room was filled with a strong insecticide-like smell, and the air purifier indicator was bright red. The odor was so overwhelming that I felt sick; my sister became nauseous, her lips started tingling, and she was completely unwell. The smell also clung to our hair and clothes and wouldn’t come out. We contacted the staff immediately and asked them to come up. As soon as they entered, they asked us to move Rooms, so we did. The new Room was not renovated—there were stains all over the floor and sofa, it felt very old overall, and there were cracks in the bathroom wall. It was terrible after specifically reserving a renovated Room. The “King’s Buffet” we had looked forward to also had fewer options than expected. Both the Room and service were disappointing, and it ruined my sister’s birthday trip. We will never stay here again.

    I’d known about it for a long time but couldn’t make it until now, and I finally got to stay. The building has some age, but it didn’t feel that old. The meals, especially the buffet, were the best I’ve had so far. It’s not an Accommodation I can use often, but I don’t think you’ll regret staying here. It was a great Accommodation.

    The building was as wonderful as ever. The service and meals were also excellent in every detail. However, although it didn’t bother me much, the Room showed some signs of age, and there were a few areas where the wallpaper was slightly worn.

    Like a palace

    The service and the breakfast and dinner buffets were delicious, and we were very satisfied. We also fully enjoyed the museum tour, which was our main purpose, and the luxury throughout the building and the magnificent columns were truly impressive. However, it was disappointing to see a lot of dust behind the beautiful glass handrails in the corridor. I would like them to clean behind them thoroughly as well. The Onsen was very relaxing, and we could unwind while enjoying the great view from the open-air bath.

    Relax and unwind

    The Hotel feels like a castle. There are chairs and sofas everywhere, so I was able to relax. The buffet was luxurious, and since it was a Multiple Night Stay, they served different dishes the next day as well—such thoughtful hospitality. Towels and bath towels are provided in the bath area, so you can go empty-handed. It’s a place I’d like to visit again.

    As expected from the “King’s Buffet.”

    I visited again this week, following my stay in November. The Facility is undeniably old, but the “King’s Buffet” truly lives up to its name. Delicious steak and tiger prawn tempura, and this time they even had longtooth grouper. I can never finish all the desserts. The breakfast buffet is fit for a king as well. I love the handmade rice balls they shape for you—you can choose your favorite filling. After enjoying the buffet here, it’s hard to eat anywhere else. I always end up overeating. Some staff can be a bit curt at times, but the food is so good that it doesn’t bother me at all— it’s pure happiness to have such delicious meals. I’ll be back again.

    In an age of convenience and ease, the value of things made without compromise or cutting corners

    Although I live in the same prefecture, I finally got to stay at Hotel Kawakyu—something I’d always wanted to do at least once! The moment you pass through the gate, it feels like stepping into a fantasy world. As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by a breathtaking entrance and lobby that practically radiate vitality. It’s endlessly luxurious, yet has a solid, monolithic strength—grounded and dignified rather than flashy. Even the delicate mosaic tiles on the floor made me want to savor every step. The museum alone is more than worth seeing. The welcome drink was delicious too. All Rooms are ocean-view suites. Follow the corridor beyond the heavy door and you’ll find a spacious Room with a dining table, two sofas (incredibly comfortable), a living table, a large TV, and big windows—plus an adjacent bedroom with an antique feel. There’s also a dressing room, wash area, and a large sparkling bath—and even the restroom is spacious. It felt like you could live there comfortably with how well everything is furnished and equipped. One surprise: there are slippers but no place to remove shoes, so it seems fine to keep your shoes on everywhere except around the bed/sofa areas and wet areas. My friend and I fully enjoyed both our own Room tour and self-guided museum tour before heading to dinner—the part we’d been waiting for. There were many varieties in small portions, with a great balance of Japanese and Western dishes. Honestly, everything was delicious. The flavors weren’t overly strong, yet each dish had real presence. I kept thinking: why isn’t my stomach a black hole? No matter what or how I ate, I was completely happy. There are two large public baths (Onsen), with men’s and women’s sides switching between night and morning. The 2nd-floor spa has many types of baths—all spacious—and the washing area is luxuriously arranged in private booth-style stations. The 1st floor also has private booths plus two options: an indoor bath and a large open-air bath. In both areas, the indoor bath and open-air bath are natural Onsen hot springs; even the provided shampoo/conditioner left my hair nicely moisturized. The hair dryers were Dyson—no compromises anywhere. The breakfast buffet was outstanding as well. It was two days that felt like an incredibly vivid dream—one you can almost feel on your skin afterward. If you use off-season rates and early-bird discounts, it’s achievable with just a bit of effort—so if you’re hesitating, I highly recommend it!

    Family Trip

    Choosing Kawakyu for our first family trip in a while was absolutely the right decision. The meals and the Onsen were both outstanding—we were completely satisfied! The hotel had a truly luxurious atmosphere, and we had so much fun taking lots of photos. Thank you to all the staff.

    Accommodation with Traces of the Bubble Era

    The lobby floor has a ceiling so high it feels like the height of three—no, maybe four—stories. Thick columns, vividly colored like an ancient temple though noticeably faded, rise up into that space. The floor area is as large as a gymnasium. Countless artworks, paintings, and interior decorations are displayed—so much so that it is even called the “Kawakyu Museum”—and this Accommodation strongly evokes the iconic atmosphere of Japan’s bubble-era boom. Was it 40 or 50 years ago? As someone who lived through that time as a young working adult, those memories came back and I felt nostalgic. From its opening-day brilliance to the “lost” decades after the bubble burst, Hotel Kawakyu carries those years (its history) within its walls. The guest rooms are spacious and suite-style. That said, 45 years of age cannot be hidden, and signs of wear can be seen throughout. Housekeeping is thorough so it never feels unpleasant, yet somehow it still feels a bit lacking. Amenities, hospitality, and service are all at a fairly high level—but hard to put into words, they feel merely “fine.” The Onsen baths retain some of their former luxury, but there are also drawbacks such as some Facilities not operating and aging faucets. Dining is promoted as the “King’s Buffet,” but objectively the buffet is above average at best; calling it “King’s” feels like an overstatement. This lavish Accommodation born in the bubble era seems to have aged without sufficient reinvestment over the past decades; perhaps in an effort to cut costs they turned to a buffet-focused approach—but I’m not sure how well that works. In terms of value for money: despite its age-related wear, you get large rooms and grand Facilities; a buffet more than enough to fill you up; and service that meets expectations—so I think an above-average rating is fair (around upper-mid). Still, there remains a lingering sense of something missing. From a guest’s perspective overall though, I do think the cost performance is strong. I would recommend this Accommodation for young couples and families with children.
