    Unforgettable even on a rainy day—enjoying time at the bar made this solo trip truly special.

    Although I traveled during the rainy season, I was able to spend a truly luxurious and relaxing time. Unfortunately it rained, but for just a moment early in the morning the sky cleared, and I was deeply moved by the breathtaking view from the bath. To see the clear-day scenery and sea of clouds that I couldn’t catch this time with my own eyes, I definitely want to come back and try again. Also, the bar inside the Accommodation was absolutely wonderful. The sommelier’s service was so pleasant that I could enjoy my drinks in great spirits. The Hakkaisan Single Grain Uonuma 8-Year Rice Whisky served over Akakura pure ice had an exquisite flavor—unforgettable. Since this was a solo road trip, I chose a Plan without dinner, but next time I would love to stay with dinner included. It became one of my very best memories of traveling in Niigata!

    Frog Croaking

    Because this Room was on the first floor, frogs kept croaking all night and I couldn’t sleep. I don’t think the Hotel staff are aware, but it seems frogs have taken up residence nearby. The tea provided by the Hotel is, frankly, not very good.

    Fifth Visit

    We’re looking forward to visiting Akakura Hotel around this time for our wedding anniversary trip. This year, for the first time, we were caught in the rain, and the road to the Hotel was completely white. Even from our Room it was all white and we couldn’t see much of the view, but in its own way that was nice too. What disappointed us this time was that the in-room amenities were gone. The first time we stayed, they were Clarins amenities. Also, it felt like there were fewer drinks in the refrigerator than before. As others have mentioned in their Review as well, the lounge snacks didn’t seem worthy of a top-class Hotel. At your sister property in Ito, I remember there being more appropriate snacks. I’ve written some critical comments first, but since both my spouse and I love the food at Aqua Dining and Akakura’s Onsen, we will visit again next year. Lastly, with a Reservation made through IKYU, we could no longer choose our dinner time. At least for guests staying in the Premium Building and SUA & SUITE rooms, it would be great if dinner times could be selected as before.

    A Wonderful Classic Hotel

    This was my first stay, and I felt the exterior closely resembled the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel. After stepping inside, I enjoyed a welcome drink of sparkling wine while taking in the view outside and admiring the beauty of the surrounding mountains from an altitude of 1,000 meters.\n\nWe stayed in a Room in the Premium Wing, which retained a classic feel while offering modern amenities. The beautiful reflecting-pool terrace provided stunning views and made for a comfortable stay.\n\nThe restaurant meals were also excellent, and thanks to the warm hospitality of the staff, we had a very pleasant time. This has become one of the Hotels I would like to visit again. Thank you very much.

    I’d love to stay here again!

    This was my first visit with my elderly mother. As her appetite has become smaller, I asked in advance if one meal at Sorbier could be served in a slightly reduced portion, and they kindly accommodated us. They also took care with foods she couldn’t eat, so she was able to finish her meal, and I’m truly grateful that she seemed very satisfied. All of the staff are always cheerful and kind, with thoughtful attention to every detail. My mother, who has dementia, was able to stay calmly and feel at ease, and I was freed from everyday stress—it was a very happy two days. Not only the scenery but also the ceilings and craftsmanship of the building, the paintings throughout the Hotel, and even the small flowers on the dining table are wonderful—I find myself admiring them every time. Many new Hotels have opened in various places, but I still love Akakura for its refined hospitality—simple without trying too hard—and its sense of dignity. It’s a Hotel that makes me want to return again right away as soon as I get home.

    A Wonderful Time

    We invited my father and mother on a trip to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They had stayed here before and said it was wonderful, so we decided to visit. To mark the occasion, we stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, and it truly exceeded our expectations. The Onsen was excellent as well—the water quality was so good that plenty of mineral deposits were floating on the surface. All of the Hotel staff were pleasant, and not only at the front desk; whenever we passed staff members in the hallway, everyone greeted us warmly. The meals were also delicious, and we were very satisfied. From the service to the Hotel’s elegant atmosphere and beautiful views, everything made for a wonderful time. It’s a Hotel I definitely want to visit again.

    Once again, we were completely satisfied.

    I first stayed here in March, and I was so impressed by how comfortable it was that I came back again this time. Even though it was the rainy season, I didn’t get caught in the rain at all. Unlike humid Tokyo, the air here was much less humid and very pleasant—I truly felt, “So this is what a summer retreat is like.” The breakfast I had been looking forward to exceeded my expectations. The vegetable-rich dishes were genuinely delicious, and as someone who often feels I don’t get enough vegetables, it made me very happy. There were so many options that I couldn’t try everything in one morning, so next time I’d love to book a Multiple Night Stay and take my time enjoying both the Western- and Japanese-style breakfasts. It was a wonderful Accommodation where I could relax as if I were at home. Even traveling alone, I lacked nothing—in fact, it was the perfect place to enjoy peaceful solo time. Thank you again for taking such great care of me. I would love to stay again.

    This is a truly wonderful Hotel! The location is, of course, excellent! The housekeeping and restaurant staff’s brief words were filled with warmth, which made me very happy. I would definitely like to stay again.

    Is that one phrase necessary?

    We stay here every year and truly appreciate your hospitality. This time, during our Multiple Night Stay, we changed Rooms. After breakfast on the moving day, the door to the new Room was open and it looked like cleaning had already been completed. Since we had a lot of luggage, I thought it would be helpful for both us and the Hotel if we moved ourselves—and that it might also allow housekeeping to start cleaning our current Room sooner—so I asked the front desk, “If the new Room has already been cleaned, may we move now?” After a while, a staff member came and said, “You may move ‘as a special exception.’” What does “as a special exception” mean? We were not asking to use the Room during the day—we weren’t planning to be in the Room anyway—and if it wasn’t possible, I feel it would have been fine to simply say, “We will move you later.” Also regarding take-out coffee from the breakfast buffet venue: last year, even on days when we ate at Aqua Dining instead of having the buffet breakfast, when I asked they kindly said “Of course.” This year when I asked again, I was told, “It’s really only for buffet guests… but go ahead,” which did not feel pleasant. It also feels like prices have risen significantly over these past few years—Accommodation rates as well as items like souvenir pound cake and even ramen at the ski area—and I was surprised that café orders are now placed via QR code. We also no longer receive postcards from the Hotel like we used to. This is a Hotel we love and we would like to continue visiting in the future, but we are concerned that staying here may become increasingly difficult. On this trip, however, we were very happy that all of your housekeeping staff greeted us warmly—it meant a lot.

    A Classic Hotel with Spectacular Views and a Cozy Atmosphere

    On the way up the hill in Akakura, I find myself thinking, “I’m home.” When it’s time to leave, I always think, “I don’t want to go…” This time we were blessed with great weather, and I was able to relax in complete comfort. It helps me unwind both body and mind, so I always get incredibly sleepy (lol). We’ll be back again in autumn. Thank you very much.

    Room 200 — Highly Satisfied

    I stay here about twice a year. Aside from the Premium building, this time I stayed in Room 200, a spacious corner Room with a jacuzzi bath, which was very nice. The views at this Hotel are simply outstanding. It was disappointing that the ropeway didn’t seem to be operating this time. I was also disappointed that I couldn’t buy the grape bread loaf I was looking forward to, as it doesn’t keep for long.

    A long-established highland resort you've always dreamed of

    A Hotel I’d been wanting to visit for a long time. While Tokyo was hit by a typhoon, it stopped raining here and turned cloudy, and the next day was sunny—so I got to enjoy both a sea of clouds and clear skies. The room view wasn’t great since it faced above the entrance at about the same height as the parking lot, but it was properly cleaned and I had a comfortable stay. The Onsen I came for was amazing, with plenty of mineral deposits in the water. It also had a sauna and cold bath, which made it perfect. Dinner was French cuisine that didn’t feel heavy at all and tasted excellent—better than expected. The breakfast buffet selection was more than sufficient. There’s also a cafe restaurant where you can grab light meals for lunch, and the souvenir shop had lots of cute items with original Hotel illustrations—I ended up wanting several things. Many of the staff seemed to be from overseas, but everyone was gentle and kind. Of course, the Japanese staff were also friendly and warm. One more thing: there was complimentary coffee and other drinks in the lounge, but personally I wanted a latte—so I wish the shop sold small cartons of milk.

    Revisit

    I first visited during a summer vacation a few years ago and was deeply impressed by the scenery and the wonderful Onsen, and I had been wanting to return ever since. The timing never quite worked out, but I was able to visit again during this period just before the rainy season begins. This time, over two days of dense fog and clear skies, I was able to enjoy breathtaking landscapes created by nature and spend a luxurious, unhurried time. The Onsen and the Room were just as wonderful as before. The only slight disappointment was that I couldn’t choose the fish for dinner. It felt like the system and the chef may have changed since my last visit.

    The Ultimate Mountain Resort

    Nine months after being moved by our first stay last summer, we were able to return in a different season! Even with unfortunate weather, Myoko’s fresh greenery wrapped in clouds and mist was wonderful, and our Room with an open-air bath also had a fireplace. In the evening, we enjoyed exquisite cuisine at Aqua Dining, and although breakfast was buffet-style, each dish was carefully prepared and truly delicious. Sasa dango was another local specialty—its gentle sweetness was so comforting. We soaked in the sulfur-scented open-air bath six times, and on a crisp highland morning we also enjoyed breathtaking views overlooking Lake Nojiri. This time there were also international staff members, and I sincerely hope they will continue to carry on this historic Hotel’s traditions and spirit of hospitality without change. Once again, we were delighted by the warm send-off as everyone kept waving until we were out of sight. We’re already looking forward to our next visit.

    The days of Hyakuna Accommodation are long gone.

    The decor may resemble the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, but the overall quality and substance are far inferior. The rooms feel like a recently renovated mid-range Hotel, and even with an in-room Onsen bath, the sulfur smell is overwhelming. The system also makes it difficult to drain the water—perhaps to discourage changing it—which leaves you feeling genuinely disappointed. They call the meals kaiseki, but the fish is at the level of something bought at an ordinary supermarket. Even though Toyama should be nearby, the freshness is poor. They also claim you can see Lake Nojiri and enjoy a spectacular view, but what you actually see is a run-down, artificial ski slope. Many of the other Hotels and lodges around Akakura and Myoko Kogen are full of abandoned buildings; this place still charges 100,000 yen, but at its current standard I doubt anyone would return. If there is one advantage over Kamikochi, it’s that you can drive almost up to the front entrance—helpful for guests with limited mobility—and it offers a faint trace of old-fashioned charm like classic landmark Hotels once had. However, set amid the faded atmosphere left behind by Japan’s Showa-era ski boom, even that feels minimal. At the Imperial Hotel in Kamikochi, water drawn from Mt. Roppyakusan tastes wonderfully pure; here they say their water comes from Mt. Myoko and is filtered, but it tastes no better than cheap bottled water or a basic water dispenser. After finally getting time off work and spending 100,000 yen on this trip, I don’t think it was worth it. Perhaps dedicated skiers might be satisfied. There used to be places deep in the mountains where you could eat unforgettable char sashimi—but choosing this Accommodation for a rare vacation was simply regrettable. I also felt that guests booking through IKYU were treated dismissively; I was seated as if by default in an area with a poor view. In addition, two staff members in their 40s–50s at the first-floor café behaved as if they were flirting during work hours—completely lacking professionalism and unpleasant to witness. The whisky selection was only Dewar’s—and priced at over 1,000 yen per glass. For comparison, at Kamikochi Imperial Hotel you can enjoy Ardbeg or Bowmore served with excellent spring water and quality ice for around 5,000 yen—a far more satisfying experience. In short: I want IKYU to list better Accommodations. It may be acceptable as a place you don’t mind writing off—but for an important trip on rare time off work, I cannot recommend it.

    A true classic among international resort hotels.

    This was my second stay, the first in seven years. Last time it rained, and this time it was foggy—weather is beyond anyone’s control—but overall I was very satisfied with my stay. However, there was one concern. When booking through IKYU, I selected a Room that included a dinner Plan, but during dinner the server went on at length about upgrading the Plan or adding extra ingredients. I assume they are instructed to do so for sales reasons, but I found it somewhat questionable.

    I love Akakan!

    This was my third visit, and I stayed for a two-night stay. The first day was perfectly clear with great visibility, while the second day was rainy and everything turned pure white—almost magical, haha. Thanks to that rain, we were treated to a spectacular sea of clouds on the morning of the third day. My Room had a deep-bath style Onsen, but compared with the hotter water from my previous stay, it was surprisingly lukewarm. It cooled down unless I put the “lid” on every time after using it, which was a bit of a hassle (sweat). Still, since I like long soaks, it may have actually been nice for me. That said, I heard someone in the next Room shout “Hot!!” on the second night—so maybe it varies by Room? Being able to enjoy free-flowing natural Onsen water anytime is truly wonderful. I opted out of housekeeping and received a service voucher that I used for delicious cake. For items I wanted replenished (linens, coffee, etc.), I wrote the types and quantities on the designated form the night before and hung it on my door—no issues at all. However, there were no particular instructions regarding restocking the refrigerator; I had to call myself and ask them to bring what I needed. I think this could be handled more smoothly. The meals were delicious both morning and evening. Next time, I’d love to have sushi at the Shirakaba counter. Since this was a Multiple Night Stay, we were able to enjoy sparkling wine in the morning (haha). I especially love the made-to-order omelet from the chef and finishing with curry. One small note: along Aqua Terrace, near the blue chair there’s a vase whose flowers looked like they were starting to wilt—please keep an eye on that. I consider Akakura Kanko Hotel one of Japan’s treasures. With how turbulent things are in today’s world it must be challenging at times, but I’m cheering you on. The stunning location and warm hospitality from all staff always make me feel wonderful—this is an Accommodation I highly recommend to fellow Japanese travelers! It takes over seven hours by car from my home, but I’ll do my best to come again (haha). I’d love another Multiple Night Stay next time as well. Thank you very much.

    The best 2-day, 1-night stay

    Every year, we come to enjoy the Onsen and have French cuisine. Pleasant Hotel staff welcome us and handle check-in right away. All the employees are friendly. Until 5:00 PM, we relaxed in the lounge— I had wine and snacks, and my husband had grape juice, coffee, and more. After that, we went to the Onsen; it is gentle on the skin and very soothing. Dinner was our favorite French cuisine with wine. It was excellent. For breakfast, I chose a Western-style meal. As always, it was delicious. Thank you for the wonderful meal and for a lovely time. We will come again.

    Wonderful!

    I stayed here with a longtime friend. The location was excellent, and the meals and Onsen were wonderful, but I was especially impressed by the high level of service from the staff. From the front desk to the restaurant and even the bus driver, everyone provided warm, attentive hospitality while maintaining a comfortable sense of distance. The sommelier and bartender were very knowledgeable, and I learned a lot from them. Next time, I’d love to stay here with my family!!!

    A Hotel I Hope Never Changes

    I have stayed here several times, but this was my first time having kaiseki for dinner. I usually dine at Aqua Dining. The kaiseki was truly satisfying, highlighting Niigata ingredients and a strong sense of seasonality. I had already appreciated the Hotel’s quality from the breakfast, but after experiencing dinner, I feel I finally understood its true excellence. The staff were warm and kind, attentive to every detail, and made the meal very enjoyable. I would love to have kaiseki again on my next visit. At this time of year, the fresh greenery was beautiful. On the grounds, many staff members were mowing and working with small trucks on various tasks. Of course, the service inside the Hotel is first-class, but I also felt that its overall excellence is maintained thanks to the efforts of many people, including those who care for the landscape and keep everything clean outdoors as well. In an age where everything is being streamlined, simplified, and automated, I have deep respect for how this Hotel continues to preserve good old traditions properly. I sincerely hope it will remain unchanged as Akakura Kanko Hotel for years to come.

    Sea of Clouds

    We were really looking forward to this trip as it was also our golden wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, the Hotel was fully booked, and the bath was so crowded it felt like a public bathhouse, which made it less enjoyable. Thank you for the complimentary cookies to commemorate the occasion. Next time, we would like to choose a day when we can see the sea of clouds.

    We upgraded your Room.

    We were contacted shortly before our stay and informed that the Room we had reserved was no longer available, so we were offered an upgraded Room. The rate remained the same, which made us feel sorry, but thanks to that we enjoyed a luxurious stay. The meals were delicious, but the portions were so large that we couldn’t finish them. It was a wonderful Hotel, and we would like to stay again.

    When we arrived, the area was shrouded in fog and the view outside the window was completely white. By the next morning, however, the fog had cleared and we were able to enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains, which left us very satisfied. Considering it as a “mountain Hotel” located within a ski resort, it was an enjoyable stay overall. On the other hand, there were a few disappointing points. First, when we used the café terrace, our sandwich and drink were not served at the same time. At dinner, the tables were quite close together and we could clearly hear nearby conversations, which made it feel a bit unsettled. As for the Room, there was a large sofa bed placed in the center that felt unnecessary for two guests; I felt it would be worth reconsidering the layout balance. If the sofa and bed fabrics were changed from the current brown-based scheme to brighter tones, it might create a more chic and cleaner impression. Also, at check-in, rather than strictly adhering to set times, I think guiding guests to Rooms as they become ready could help improve overall guest satisfaction.

    A Memorable Hotel

    Everything was perfect. That’s my honest feeling. The location, the calm Facility, the French cuisine, and the free-flowing natural Onsen—all of it truly touched my heart. Above all, the staff’s hospitality was outstanding. It was my wife’s birthday, and we were deeply moved by the surprise song at the restaurant. We were able to spend a truly fulfilling and heartwarming time.

    Dazzling Akakura Kanko Hotel

    We skipped right past the fresh green season and experienced a summer-like day in Myoko Kogen. The gradient of light and shadow across the mountains, and the sunlit greenery reflecting the light, were dazzling. Both the large public bath and the open-air bath had truly five-star water quality, and my fatigue melted away from the core. At Aqua Dining, the selectable course meals and drinks were delicious—I ended up eating too much. The staff were also very attentive.

    A Casual Solo Onsen Getaway

    At the end of the fiscal year, once work had settled down, I dropped by to enjoy the Onsen. The Room faced Mt. Myoko and was quiet and relaxing. Breakfast was a satisfying buffet and very tasty. If I had one request, I’d like the hours for light snacks to be a bit longer.

    Come back again and again, in every season.

    This is a Hotel I want to visit several times a year. The housekeeping staff clean thoroughly every time, so I can stay comfortably. Even though they are always busy, their polite greetings each time we meet make me happy. It was still chilly in the mornings and evenings, so at night we lit the fireplace and turned on the floor heating. The in-Room Onsen was at the perfect temperature, with plenty of mineral deposits, and felt wonderful. The cosmetic amenities had changed again. The wasabi potato salad from the breakfast salad bar was delicious—I tried it for the first time this visit. Sorry for my Room requests every time.

    A long-awaited stay

    I finally got to stay at the Accommodation I’d been wanting to visit for a long time. It’s a bit hard to get to, so I hadn’t had many chances, but I treated myself as a birthday celebration. The views were even more spectacular than I expected, and the Onsen was truly wonderful. The food was delicious and very filling. At the bar, though, I was disappointed that no one really attended to me—maybe there was a one-drink service or they were focused on regulars. I’d love to see the sea of clouds, so I’m thinking of coming back until I can catch it. My wife tends to have asthma, but she felt great—maybe because the air is so clean. We were able to relax completely. Thank you very much. We’ll be back again.

    I was able to stay in a corner room at the prestigious Akakura Kanko Hotel.

    We stayed in a Deluxe Twin Corner Room on the Lake Nojiri side. There was still some patchy snow, and the view was wonderful. The corridor on the way to the large public bath felt a little chilly, but the Onsen also had great views, with excellent water quality that felt beneficial for the skin. Dinner at the French restaurant “Sorbier” was delicious, and we appreciated the careful explanations, such as how to choose the sauce for the pan-seared beef fillet. The next morning, in the Harvest Garden in front of the Hotel, we listened to the sound of snowmelt flowing and were able to observe skunk cabbage and butterbur buds, truly feeling that spring had arrived. It’s a Hotel we would like to visit again in summer as well.

    A top-tier Resort Hotel offering breathtaking views and exceptional all-around quality

    The breathtaking views—often said to be a must-see at least once—were even better thanks to the great weather, and I was able to fully enjoy them. I stayed in the most affordable single Room, but soaking in the open-air bath at the large public bath while taking in the scenery was pure bliss. The water temperature was slightly hot but just right, and you can go empty-handed. The service was highly hospitable: smooth coordination around the front desk, staff who kept an eye on everything even at the breakfast buffet, and even at the café they apologized at checkout for happening to be painting the terrace in preparation for summer. Overall, the food was delicious. I chose Aqua Dining for dinner, and I also appreciated that tables were spaced generously throughout—whether with the view at dinner, at the breakfast buffet, or in the café. What stood out most personally were the juicy, sweet oranges served pre-cut at breakfast (since there wasn’t fresh-squeezed juice), and a rich, delicious cake I had at the café (I forgot its name). For those considering a stay: single Rooms in the Premium Building face the parking lot, so there is a downside noted regarding views. For one night, since you’ll be going to meals and using the large public bath and won’t spend much time in your Room except sleeping, it didn’t bother me—but for a Multiple Night Stay or for women travelers, I recommend choosing a room on Lake Nojiri side. Also (though it may vary by Room), there was no coffee maker; only UCC drip coffee packs and standard Ito En tea bags—about on par with a Business Hotel—which was a bit disappointing. And while I knew this beforehand as well: having lobby free drinks limited to three hours with only small snacks like assorted dagashi (and no chocolate or cheese) felt like an area that could be improved given its top-tier tradition and prestige. Lastly, time seemed to flow slowly throughout this Accommodation, and I was able to relax comfortably—thank you very much.
