    Summer Retreat

When I learned it would reach 30°C at the end of May, I quickly made a Reservation hoping for a cooler place and, just a little, a sea of clouds. The weather was clear, so we couldn’t see the sea of clouds. The best part was the open-air bath—it was quiet with few people, and I spent a long time simply gazing at the moon without thinking about anything. I wanted sushi but it wasn’t available; dinner was Italian instead, and nothing in particular stood out.

    Satisfaction

What brings me back to this Hotel is something you won’t find elsewhere. The atmosphere of the Hotel is created by people. Every staff member, in every position, welcomes guests with the best possible service and presence, making even a brief stay on the way home feel special. Each time, I leave with deep satisfaction—not only from the warm hospitality, but also from seeing how beautifully everything is maintained, including the carefully tended gardens. This time in particular, I was truly impressed by the work of the outside contractors. They too carry pride in Akakura Kanko Hotel and share a genuine desire to make it even better—to help guests feel something when they see the gardens kept so beautifully in order. Watching them work hard and sweat reminded me why I keep coming back here.

A Hotel You’ll Want to Visit Again for That Onsen

I stayed for two nights. The Onsen was the highlight above all else. Even the in-room bath is fed directly from the source, so being able to enjoy fresh hot spring water whenever I wanted felt truly luxurious. The water quality was excellent, and together with the scenery and the Hotel’s atmosphere, it left the strongest impression of this stay. It’s a Hotel that makes me want to return specifically for the Onsen. On the other hand, I was slightly disappointed with the in-room bath amenities. I understand using large refillable bottles out of consideration for the environment, but their appearance and shared-use feel were somewhat like a day-use hot spring facility, and didn’t seem to match the refined atmosphere of the room and Onsen. I would be happy if they could remain eco-friendly while better fitting the Hotel’s overall style. I also noticed that after housekeeping during my Multiple Night Stay, bottled water in my room wasn’t replenished. At many Hotels I’ve stayed at it usually is, so while it’s a small detail, it was a bit surprising. Considering that each room has an in-room bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water from its source, I didn’t feel the Accommodation Fee was expensive. The Onsen experience, views, and atmosphere of this historic resort feel well worth it. There were a few minor points that stood out, but even so, it’s still a Hotel I’d gladly visit again just to soak in that Onsen.

    Breathtaking Views

The view from the terrace is breathtakingly open. Beyond the wide lawn, there’s nothing to block the scenery, and it makes you want to take a deep breath. The bath is also fed directly from the hot spring source, leaving your skin silky smooth. Even though it was midsummer, mornings and evenings were chilly, and with the spectacular views, I couldn’t bring myself to get out of the open-air bath lol. We had French cuisine at Sorbier in the main dining room. Everything was delicious and very filling. Personally, the abalone en croute was my favorite. The Room was spotless and well maintained, with a great selection of amenities. The main building is a mountain Resort Hotel with a wonderful atmosphere that feels rich in history. It has been beautifully refreshed through renovations and remodeling, but I hope this charming old-world ambiance will remain. Next time, I’d love to return in a different season.

My favorite Hotel after more than a dozen stays

This is my favorite Hotel. Whenever I think of the view from the Hotel, I want to go back—I believe I’ve stayed there about 12 or 13 times. After arriving, the time spent enjoying sparkling wine in the lounge while taking in the wonderful scenery, and the time spent on the Aqua Terrace after a bath listening to birdsong, are both truly relaxing. For dinner, we chose French cuisine at Sorbier. The chilled appetizer of Shinshu salmon mi-cuit, the consommé soup, and the grilled beef fillet main were all excellent and delicious. My husband said his pan-seared sea bass was “the best sea bass I’ve ever had.” The staff who welcome you on arrival, as well as those at reception and in the restaurant, are all polite and pleasant, so we were able to spend our stay comfortably from check-in to check-out.

    A Resort with Spectacular Views

Although the weather was mostly cloudy, the view stretching out in front of us was wonderfully open and breathtaking. I relaxed on the waterside terrace again and again. I also enjoyed the cakes at the café. Both the Onsen and the meals were very satisfying. The recommended beef consommé truly has a rich, concentrated flavor that makes you think, “Yes, this is beef.” It’s something you should try at least once. For dinner, I wanted both fish and meat as main dishes, so I upgraded to the special dinner course. It was satisfying overall, but I wish there had been a few more options for meat dishes. While the service had the dignified feel of a classic Hotel, the welcome drink service—apparently added to suit modern tastes—felt somewhat underwhelming. The free-flow drinks including alcohol are nice, but it was a bit disappointing that the snacks were only at a packaged-snack level. Instead, I would have loved to see your café enhanced further—including longer opening hours—and turned into a more comfortable lounge space.

    Although the daytime...

Although the daytime heat was not much different from Tokyo, the mornings were much cooler, with a pleasant breeze, and we felt refreshed while enjoying the magnificent views. The meals (kaiseki and French cuisine) were excellent, and we were able to enjoy them at a relaxed pace. In particular, the breakfast buffet was of very high quality; it was clear that each dish was carefully prepared and served, which we truly appreciated. The Onsen with yuno-hana floating throughout was also wonderful and very relaxing. The private family bath was very easy to use as well. We played tennis and rode the cable car to enjoy the swings, and even our older children had a great time. This is an Accommodation we would like to continue cherishing for years to come. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

A wonderful Hotel where you can enjoy history and exceptional service

The Hotel’s calm, historic atmosphere, stunning views, Onsen, and dining made for an extremely satisfying stay overall. The service was courteous and attentive, and the staff’s support made us feel at ease. The in-house Facility offerings were also excellent; the Onsen was wonderful in both water quality and ambiance, allowing us to relax at a leisurely pace. The meals exceeded expectations as well—taste, selection, and service were all of a high standard. The guest room was kept clean, though some areas felt a bit dated. In particular, updating the toilet to a tankless model in the future would further enhance both comfort and the sense of luxury throughout the room. While there is some room for improvement in certain in-room amenities, everything else was nearly flawless, and we fully enjoyed what makes Akakura Kanko Hotel so special. It is a Hotel we would love to visit again in another season.

Unchanging satisfaction and a sense of luxury

Although it had been a while, this was a wonderful four-day stay. Everything exceeded my expectations: the staff’s hospitality and service, not only the French cuisine but also the excellent Japanese dishes, the well-stocked amenities, the cleanliness of the in-Room open-air bath, the great-tasting drinking water, and the view. My family’s connection with this Hotel began with my late parents’ honeymoon here in 1944. Since then, I have many memories as well—from ski trips during my student days to golf stays after I started working. Soaking in the open-air bath and looking out over Lake Nojiri brought back many fond memories. Please continue to preserve this Hotel’s fine traditions.

    Highly satisfied

We stayed for two nights. The views from the Room and the Onsen were wonderful, and it was very comfortable. We requested the premium dinner for both the French and Japanese meals, and everything was delicious, with carefully prepared dishes using seasonal ingredients. The weather wasn’t great, but even so, it was a lovely stay.

    Meals and Bathing Facilities

We stayed for a Multiple Night Stay in a Room with an open-air bath. We used it seven times, including after golf. It was spacious with outstanding views of the mountains. The Imori Pond at 6:00 a.m. is also recommended. The French dinner felt summery with salmon, sweetfish, and pike conger, but there were too many fish dishes. The first salmon had small bones, which spoiled it. The abalone liver lacked flavor, and the meat was thinly sliced. On the second day we chose the special Japanese kaiseki course, which was excellent. The breakfast buffet was also high-class.

    Wonderful Hotel

I’d always wanted to stay here someday, and it truly was a wonderful Hotel that didn’t disappoint. The Onsen in the Room had a unique stepped design, which made it incredibly comfortable. We couldn’t see the sea of clouds this time, but the view was absolutely amazing. Since it was summer, there were quite a few insects on the balcony. We upgraded our meals as well, and everything was delicious. I’d love to visit again.

I’m glad I got to see the breathtaking sea of clouds!

I stayed for two nights in a main building Room with a private Onsen bath. I was satisfied to be able to see the sea of clouds from the Room and the terrace. For dinner, I chose French at Sorbier and Japanese cuisine at Seasonal Vegetable Dining “Shirakaba,” upgrading to the premium dinner course; however, the wagyu dish in the French course was a thin Chaliapin steak, which was somewhat disappointing. The Japanese meal felt overall a bit heavily seasoned. The Room’s view was slightly obstructed by other buildings, but it was comfortable and pleasant to stay in. The Scotch ice at the bar was beautifully clear.

    Thank you very much!

I was truly impressed by the scenery. Although we didn’t get to see the sea of clouds, even with overcast skies we enjoyed views that exceeded our expectations. Dinner and breakfast were great, and the lobby drinks were also nice. All the staff were very pleasant. The next morning (Sunday) seemed to coincide with a wedding, so it felt a bit busy. I would have preferred separate routes for guests and wedding attendees, but I understand it may be unavoidable. I would like to visit again.

    Way Back

On the train from Myoko-Kogen Station on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway to Joetsu-Myoko, my husband and I found ourselves talking about when we would come again. The view of Mt. Madarao and the surrounding mountain range from our Room window makes me want to take a deep breath every time I think of it. I realized this is what true luxury feels like. Dinner, breakfast, lunch at the bakery, and tea time— everything was accompanied by attentive service. We truly wished we could stay a little longer. As we travel by train, getting around isn’t always easy, so if there were Japanese set meals available for lunch as well, it would be absolutely perfect! We’re already saying we’d love to visit in every season.

    I booked again.

Last year I stayed in a semi-open-air bath room in the main building, but it didn’t feel as good as the Reviews suggested. This time I tried the SPA & SUITE wing. The weather was relatively kind during a break in the rainy season, and I was able to fully enjoy the wonderful views, which was great. However, if the weather is not favorable, I feel it may not be worth the price. Both dinner at Solbier and the breakfast buffet felt a bit underwhelming compared with other Accommodations in the same price range. Many of the staff seem to have limited experience; sometimes they couldn’t answer questions, or answers differed depending on who you asked, so I’d like to see some improvement. Considering the price difference between the main building and SPA & SUITE, it’s hard to say which is better. If good weather is guaranteed, I might stay again.

A delight to admire, soak in, and savor.

A Hotel that’s great for the views, great for soaking, and great for dining. Because it stands alone on the mountainside of Mt. Myoko, the views are exceptional. If possible, a room facing Lake Nojiri is recommended. Even better if you have binoculars (bringing your own is recommended). There is a complimentary drink service in the lobby from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Apparently they also offer draft beer and wine, but I didn’t notice where they were placed—so if you enjoy those, look around and enjoy. Inside the Hotel, it seems fine to wear a yukata or loungewear everywhere except the Western-style restaurant, which may feel nice and relaxed. This time I chose a Room with an Onsen bath because I didn’t feel like walking much, so I can’t comment on the large public bath. However, the in-room bath was spacious with a view, and I could soak at leisure. The water leaves your skin feeling smooth and very pleasant. It has that characteristic “sulfur/egg” scent, which actually makes it feel even more like an Onsen—in a good way. Great water and great views for soaking. For dinner at Sorbier, I chose the standard French course; everything looked beautiful and was carefully prepared—truly delicious with nothing to complain about. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere nearby to eat around the Hotel area, so dining at the Hotel is probably best. Breakfast also felt thoughtfully made (both Japanese and Western options), and I enjoyed trying various dishes while deciding what to choose. Great food as well. The Room was of course well maintained and very satisfying. There were walking paths around the Hotel grounds too, but since walking isn’t easy for me right now, I gave them a miss this time. If budget allows, I’d love to do a Multiple Night Stay—taking my time enjoying the views, soaking in the Onsen water, and savoring great meals.

    It was an elegant stay.

We stayed for one night and two days. We arrived early at the Hotel on the Shuttle Service bus, and while we were taking photos around the Hotel, the driver kindly asked, “Would you like me to take one for you?” He took many photos of us at recommended spots. Thank you very much. All of the staff were friendly, making our stay truly pleasant. The lunch and cakes on the café terrace were delicious, and the view was perfect. We felt relaxed and pampered throughout our time there. The meal at Aqua Dining was also excellent. It was great that we could switch to a special menu on the day. The Onsen was wonderful, and our Room was comfortable. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much for a lovely time.

The view from the Room is...

The Hotel’s Facility and services were excellent with no issues. Unfortunately, the view from our Room was disappointing. We were told that “you can see the restaurant and the Hotel roof below,” but directly in front of our Room there was a triangular protrusion with a red roof, which spoiled the view. Also, the indoor Onsen bath had an overly strong sulfur smell and the scenery was not particularly impressive, so we only used it once during our two-night stay and did not find much value in it. However, the view from Aqua Terrace was wonderful, and we went there many times during our stay to enjoy it. We had been looking forward to staying on the 4th floor on the Lake Nojiri side, so this trip ended up being slightly disappointing.

I was completely satisfied with everything.

I stayed here on a long-overdue trip with friends. I was impressed not only by the scenery, meals, and Onsen, but also by the warm, hospitable service, which made my stay very comfortable. The only thing I would like to see improved is the in-Room loungewear—since it was a yukata, it was inconvenient for moving around; I would appreciate it even more if it could be changed to something like samue. Other than that, I had no complaints and am grateful for such a wonderful trip. Thank you very much.

    Scenic View Hotel

The dignified sight of the stately red roof towering high above when viewed from the road below heightened our anticipation. Our stay far exceeded those expectations. Simply breathtaking views! The sunrise was like a painting—an incomparable luxury. The French dinner was beautifully presented and not heavy, and we enjoyed every course; the salmon appetizer was my favorite. The male staff member who served as sommelier was also a pleasure to interact with. The breakfast buffet, too, featured highly satisfying dishes, each carefully prepared. A well-built male staff member carrying dishes partway through kindly recommended freshly made warm items and explained that the iced coffee had been renewed and tasted better—I could truly feel his warmth and character. Due to a Facility issue in our Room, we were moved to another Room, but the sincerity of the Room attendant’s response at that time—and the careful apology at checkout—were impressive. It even seemed that all staff near the entrance had been informed, and everyone apologized so much that we felt almost embarrassed. Of course it’s best if there are no issues, but moments like this really show the difference in a Hotel’s quality. From the paintings throughout the building and what looked like parquet flooring near the elevators, to the welcome on arrival, valet service (which has become less common lately), and seeing us off until we were out of sight—everything made it an unforgettable experience worthy of a long-established Resort Hotel. My husband traveling with me was even more delighted than I was, already wondering which season we should visit next.

    Thank you for your support.

Thank you very much for your hospitality. The staff’s high level of service was outstanding, especially the female bartender at the bar (who also served as a sommelier at Aqua Restaurant). Her excellent customer service left a strong impression, and I would like to visit again. However, because I do hope to return, I would like to mention a few points that concerned me: The in-Room loungewear provided consisted only of a yukata and tanzen, which were difficult to wear and restrictive to move in. I would appreciate something like samue, and there were no pajamas either, which made it hard to sleep comfortably. One more point regarding Room cleaning: on the first day there was no bath mat. On the second day there were no tabi socks, and what appeared to be a cleaning cloth was left in the toilet. The air purifier’s water tank was also left empty. Although I have written several things, overall my satisfaction was high, and I look forward to staying with you again next time.

    With the Onsen, walk...

With the Onsen, walks, stargazing, and sunrise photography at the Aqua Terrace… there’s so much to do that time flies by. Whenever I hesitate near the front desk, staff (especially the younger team members) quickly approach and offer support, which is very helpful. This time, one of my companions is waiting for right hip surgery and can’t walk for long; since they love Onsen saunas, we booked three single Rooms so we could be as close as possible to the large public bath. After making the Reservation they came down with another illness and couldn’t use the bath after all, but they still seemed to spend a comfortable stay in this Room. This time we were able to see a beautiful sunrise, with the morning glow and clouds reflected on the water feature. Next time, I hope we’ll finally encounter a sea of clouds.

    A Time Filled with Happiness

A Hotel often described as a must-visit—and it truly was. I arrived just before 14:00 to use the lounge. At check-in, I was told the Room was already ready, and I was promptly shown to it. The Room was impeccably arranged, which naturally raises expectations, but every detail exceeded them—I was simply impressed. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t clear, but soaking in the bath and cooling down while watching the ever-changing view right in front of me was deeply soothing. Both dinner and breakfast were truly delicious, and there was just the right amount of distance from other guests, allowing me to relax in peace. With its calm atmosphere and wonderful scenery, I’d love to return soon in another season. Thank you very much.

Unforgettable even on a rainy day—enjoying time at the bar made this solo trip truly special.

Although I traveled during the rainy season, I was able to spend a truly luxurious and relaxing time. Unfortunately it rained, but for just a moment early in the morning the sky cleared, and I was deeply moved by the breathtaking view from the bath. To see the clear-day scenery and sea of clouds that I couldn’t catch this time with my own eyes, I definitely want to come back and try again. Also, the bar inside the Accommodation was absolutely wonderful. The sommelier’s service was so pleasant that I could enjoy my drinks in great spirits. The Hakkaisan Single Grain Uonuma 8-Year Rice Whisky served over Akakura pure ice had an exquisite flavor—unforgettable. Since this was a solo road trip, I chose a Plan without dinner, but next time I would love to stay with dinner included. It became one of my very best memories of traveling in Niigata!

    Frog Croaking

Because this Room was on the first floor, frogs kept croaking all night and I couldn’t sleep. I don’t think the Hotel staff are aware, but it seems frogs have taken up residence nearby. The tea provided by the Hotel is, frankly, not very good.

    Fifth Visit

We’re looking forward to visiting Akakura Hotel around this time for our wedding anniversary trip. This year, for the first time, we were caught in the rain, and the road to the Hotel was completely white. Even from our Room it was all white and we couldn’t see much of the view, but in its own way that was nice too. What disappointed us this time was that the in-room amenities were gone. The first time we stayed, they were Clarins amenities. Also, it felt like there were fewer drinks in the refrigerator than before. As others have mentioned in their Review as well, the lounge snacks didn’t seem worthy of a top-class Hotel. At your sister property in Ito, I remember there being more appropriate snacks. I’ve written some critical comments first, but since both my spouse and I love the food at Aqua Dining and Akakura’s Onsen, we will visit again next year. Lastly, with a Reservation made through IKYU, we could no longer choose our dinner time. At least for guests staying in the Premium Building and SUA & SUITE rooms, it would be great if dinner times could be selected as before.

    A Wonderful Classic Hotel

This was my first stay, and I felt the exterior closely resembled the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel. After stepping inside, I enjoyed a welcome drink of sparkling wine while taking in the view outside and admiring the beauty of the surrounding mountains from an altitude of 1,000 meters.\n\nWe stayed in a Room in the Premium Wing, which retained a classic feel while offering modern amenities. The beautiful reflecting-pool terrace provided stunning views and made for a comfortable stay.\n\nThe restaurant meals were also excellent, and thanks to the warm hospitality of the staff, we had a very pleasant time. This has become one of the Hotels I would like to visit again. Thank you very much.

I’d love to stay here again!

This was my first visit with my elderly mother. As her appetite has become smaller, I asked in advance if one meal at Sorbier could be served in a slightly reduced portion, and they kindly accommodated us. They also took care with foods she couldn’t eat, so she was able to finish her meal, and I’m truly grateful that she seemed very satisfied. All of the staff are always cheerful and kind, with thoughtful attention to every detail. My mother, who has dementia, was able to stay calmly and feel at ease, and I was freed from everyday stress—it was a very happy two days. Not only the scenery but also the ceilings and craftsmanship of the building, the paintings throughout the Hotel, and even the small flowers on the dining table are wonderful—I find myself admiring them every time. Many new Hotels have opened in various places, but I still love Akakura for its refined hospitality—simple without trying too hard—and its sense of dignity. It’s a Hotel that makes me want to return again right away as soon as I get home.
