    It was my first stay...

It was my first stay, and the Accommodation was more comfortable than I expected. What I liked: 1) Set a little back from the lakeside road, in a quiet forest—great surroundings. 2) The complimentary welcome drinks (beer, wine, etc.) were a nice touch. 3) The Onsen is a free-flowing, milky white cloudy bath—very satisfying. It would be even better if bathing were available 24 hours. 4) The meals are average. 5) There are few staff members, but they are reliable and polite. Other notes: 1) The in-room safe is analog, so it’s inconvenient to carry the key when going out. 2) There are many stairs, so take care when moving around. 3) We stayed in both a Japanese-style room and a Western-style room; the Western-style room was definitely more comfortable. Overall, I was very satisfied and would consider staying again.

    A Pleasant Open-Air Bath

    - The Room had no view; from the window we could only see a privacy wooden fence. However, the building is surrounded by forest, and it seemed unlikely that Lake Chuzenji would be very visible from other Rooms either, so it was not an issue. (That said, I hope they do not cut down trees just for the sake of a view. I have heard of a Chinese-owned Hotel that cut trees outside its property to improve the view of Mt. Fuji; I hope this environment will be protected.) Since it was after renovation, the Room was clean and spacious. - The meals were a good portion for both dinner and breakfast. Local ingredients were used and everything tasted great. In particular, while many Accommodations offer buffet-style dining for breakfast and dinner, here both were seated service. This was also one reason we chose this Accommodation. - Check-in and check-out were self-service, but there were about three machines available, so everything went smoothly. - The baths—especially the open-air bath—felt very open, with a relaxing forest atmosphere; at night we could even enjoy moonlight through the trees and truly unwind.

    Business Hotel with Onsen

Using a car or the Shuttle Service is recommended. If you take the local bus, you will need to walk quite a long uphill mountain road from the bus stop to the Hotel. Check-in and check-out, and almost everything else, are handled digitally, and most of the staff are foreigners. It seems they aim for efficiency through labor-saving operations. At check-in we were given a QR code with guidance that we could view facility information and complete checkout procedures in our Room, but it also included an option to tip staff. That made me wonder whether wages are being kept low and supplemented by tips. The free drinks in the lobby even included draft beer, which was nice. The Room felt smaller than it looked in the photos. We considered asking to switch to a larger Room, but after looking at the floor plan we decided there didn’t seem to be any rooms that looked bigger than ours. We ended up laughing together about how well the photos were taken. What stood out most was a lack of staff training. Since this isn’t an issue with any one individual, I felt it may reflect a problem with how the Hotel is managed overall. For example, there were items like an insecticide spray can stored inside the in-room safe. Also at the dining area there was no explanation of the dishes; placements varied from table to table; even fish was served facing random directions—overall very careless presentation. And honestly, the food may have been below average. I’ve seen responses from the Hotel on Review sites mentioning improvements to meals, but I think there are more fundamental issues than that. The open-air sulfur hot spring bath is wonderful, so it feels disappointing because this could become a much better Hotel with some effort. If you’re expecting warm Japanese-style hospitality, this may not be the right Hotel for you.

    A Luxurious Getaway in Oku-Nikko

An Accommodation on the shores of Lake Chuzenji in Oku-Nikko. We stayed here as a base for trekking routes to Kotoku Marsh, Yudaki Falls, and Ryuzu Falls. From the drink service in the lobby onward, it is a very relaxing Accommodation. We were also very satisfied with the Onsen and the meals.

    Neither good nor bad.

Other Reviews have said similar things, but overall everything felt average. What I liked was that the Onsen is a sulfur spring, and the open-air bath was reasonably spacious and comfortable. The lobby drink service was also available for a long time. As for the meals, they were described as a “special kaiseki,” but neither dinner nor breakfast felt special, and they even seemed a bit plain. Both check-in and check-out were done via smartphone and computer, so it was quick, but I felt it might be difficult for elderly guests.

    The bath is amazing.

I’ve visited many times since it first opened. The meals used to be delicious, but in recent years I feel the quality and taste have declined, so I now stay with No Meals Included. The baths are open-air in the forest and always wonderful no matter when you go. This time, I even saw a deer mother and her fawn. I also love the View Bath Twin room. If you open the window, it feels like a semi-open-air bath and is very relaxing. It’s a shame it isn’t an Onsen, but there was a great selection of bath additives provided, which was excellent.

We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast while taking in the beautiful fresh greenery views. Thank you very much for the wonderful birthday service. The Onsen was excellent, with great water quality. It was nice to be able to enjoy alcohol and soft drinks in the lobby. The sparkling wine was fairly sweet, so I would be happy if a dry option were also available. Since there is no elevator, it was difficult having to carry heavy luggage up the stairs to our Room. A staff member guided us to the Room, but I would have appreciated some consideration in helping with our luggage.

I had a quiet and relaxing stay.

Given the building’s age, access to the large public bath and restaurant is only via stairs, so this Facility is difficult to use unless you are confident on your feet or have someone assisting you. The corridor leading to the Room is narrow. Also, the lake view from both the lobby and the Room is blocked by trees—you come here for the lake, but you can’t really see it. The meals were very ordinary in both content and taste. At breakfast, serving a pork-miso-soup-style dish using a tabletop burner felt unnecessary; it would be better to prepare it in a large pot in the kitchen and serve it in bowls so guests can drink it right away, reduce equipment use, and ease staff workload. There were no amenities at the sinks in the large bath changing area—was this for hygiene reasons? On a positive note, there seemed to be thoughtful touches such as drinks in the lobby lounge and fresh green tatami mats in the Japanese-style room. It was reasonably priced with two meals included.

    Considering the Onse...

Considering the Onsen water quality, the taste of the meals, and how clean the Room is, I decided to stay at this Hotel. I’ve stayed here several times, and the moment I step into the Hotel, I can smell the Onsen—almost as if my body starts to relax right away. In the lobby, you can unwind on a sofa with a welcome drink in hand and soothe your travel fatigue. Personally, I love the hot wine and champagne. The meals feature plenty of ingredients that are good for your skin, and combined with an Onsen known for its skin-friendly qualities, I think it’s great for beauty care and skin treatment. The staff were also very kind, which made my stay comfortable. Since there is no elevator or in-Room telephone, I would appreciate further progress in accessibility as someone who has elderly family members. (There are grab bars in the bath in the Room, so it feels safe.)

    There were issues this time.

I always stay here, but there were a few issues from the first day, so please take care to prevent this in the future. 1. There was trash left by the previous guest in the Room’s bin. 2. At dinner on the second day, one item listed on the menu was unavailable. The staff apologized and offered me a beer instead, which I appreciated. 3. At breakfast on the third day, I had already finished dessert when miso soup was brought to me, which was very frustrating. Despite these repeated issues, your international staff are pleasant, so I made a Reservation for May.

    Simply the best.

It was our first Onsen trip as a family of three! The room was comfortable, and our son enjoyed crawling around happily. The private open-air bath in the guest room was spacious and clean, and opening the window revealed a beautiful snowy view that made it incredibly relaxing. They provided a child’s chair, bath items, and shampoo for kids, so we felt at ease staying with our little one. The meals were also delicious. We’re glad we chose Shikisai Ryokan for our first Onsen trip with a child!

Delicious cuisine and milky white sulfur-scented Onsen are the highlights. Located right by Lake Chuzenji, the location is excellent. However, the heating within the Facility was insufficient, making it quite cold, and the portion sizes of meals felt a bit small. Even inside the Facility, warm clothing is necessary. Meals might feel insufficient for men with larger appetites. The dishes featuring local yuba were particularly delicious.

    Credit settlement is manual.

Smart check-in is efficient, but during check-out, payment requires manual input, causing long lines. The shop allows self-payment, but charging to the Room requires calling Hotel staff. Efficient or inefficient?

The lobby, hallways, and restaurant are too cold.

The semi-open-air bath in the room was available 24 hours and was wonderful. Plenty of clean linens were provided in the room, showing thoughtful consideration. Unfortunately, the meals felt below average. Moreover, it was extremely cold; even though a heater was provided, it had little effect due to the open ceiling design. It was disappointing.

    Stay with Family

The open-air bath in the room is not Onsen, which is disappointing. Meals, both breakfast and dinner, lacked impact. Many items seemed pre-prepared, resulting in overly cold food and some dust-like particles. The large public bath was not crowded, which was nice.

Stayed during the autumn foliage season.

I stayed in a room with a private open-air bath. The view from the room was excellent, and in the early morning, I could see a fox walking in the distance. The large public bath was also very pleasant, and after the outdoor lights were turned off just before closing time, the combination of starlit skies, light snowfall, and autumn leaves was exceptional. Here is where things became problematic: While there were no faults with the staff members, noise from surrounding rooms echoed incessantly while I was in my room. Despite calling immediately after check-in to have them address it, unbearable noise persisted from check-in until 1:00 AM and started again as early as 6:00 AM from adjacent rooms and even upstairs. I couldn’t sleep at all. Considering it’s autumn foliage season and that I booked a room with a private open-air bath at a considerable price point, I had hoped to enjoy my stay comfortably during this time.

    It might be the best.

This was my second stay. I was very drawn to the location, overlooking Lake Chuzenji through the forest. Both last time and this time were in late autumn, so I could see families of monkeys moving through the fallen leaves in the forest. The Onsen and meals were satisfying, and the welcome drink of hot wine was heartwarming. Although there is a focus on efficiency with features like smart check-out, you can feel hospitality throughout your stay. The deck bath is highly recommended; it offers a wonderful sense of unity with the forest. Having traveled to many places, I am convinced this is my best accommodation ever. It’s a place where you can spend quiet moments reflecting on yourself or other things. Truly a wonderful place—thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Special Kaiseki meal and open-air bath, disappointing.

I booked a room with an open-air bath to enjoy the view of Lake Chuzenji. However, I was very surprised to find that the open-air bath in the room was not an Onsen. In this cold season, it is honestly difficult to use an open-air bath that is not an Onsen, and I would have appreciated it if it had been clearly stated in advance that it was not an Onsen. Additionally, while I initially made a reservation with breakfast included, when I later requested dinner via email, the staff responded very politely, which was greatly appreciated. I was informed that there were three options: Premium Kaiseki, Standard Kaiseki, and Light Kaiseki; I chose the highest-tier "Premium Kaiseki." However, the content did not feel premium at all and left quite a standard impression overall. In particular, the Kirifuri Highland Beef sirloin served as "main dish" consisted of only four very small pieces and did not live up to expectations as a main dish—this was disappointing. While the staff's service was courteous and attentive throughout my stay, I felt there is room for improvement regarding how "with open-air bath" is described and also in terms of Premium Kaiseki content quality. Overall, given my expectations beforehand, my stay felt somewhat underwhelming.

    Minimal interaction with staff.

From check-in to check-out and ordering food and drinks, everything is handled via smartphone for personalized service. There is no traditional Hotel staff interaction or explanation.

    Business Hotel with Onsen?

This was my second stay, and there were significant changes in the service. The unmanned front desk is on the second floor, the dining hall on the first floor, and a large public Onsen in the basement. No elevator, only long stairs. Check-in, check-out, shop purchases, and payments are all done via unmanned touch panels. There is an all-you-can-drink service for draft beer, wine, coffee, tea, and other soft drinks in the hall (alcohol available until 7 PM?). The Room has no key; instead uses a number input system on the door. At check-in, a receipt-like paper with your room number and door code is printed—be sure to carry it or note down your code when leaving your Room. Dinner and breakfast times as well as drink orders during meals are managed via QR codes. There are Japanese-style rooms with sunken kotatsu tables but no yukata provided; instead worn-out samue outfits were placed in the Room for use (size exchanges can be made by picking replacements from stacks in the hallway). Futons are laid out during dinner time. Amenities are standard for an Onsen accommodation—nothing special. While there was cleansing gel for women provided among toiletries, there was no hair tonic for men. The Onsen had a strong sulfur smell with water that alternated between clear and cloudy depending on time; temperatures varied from lukewarm to very hot. Meals were served in a lively communal dining hall where seating felt close to neighboring guests. The food itself was average—not particularly good or bad—but included bland chawanmushi(?) and small steak pieces of modest size. Dishes were brought out one after another without regard to our pace of eating; even while enjoying beer during dinner everything wrapped up within about an hour. Foreign staff members were kind while some Japanese staff came across as mechanical—constantly clearing dishes like at a family restaurant atmosphere rather than traditional hospitality settings expected at such accommodations. Surprisingly breakfast lacked miso soup despite being Japanese-style—a first experience after visiting many Onsen accommodations monthly! Rice served from wooden containers arrived cold alongside missing pickles typically accompanying such meals. While facilities like rooms/toilets/public baths appeared relatively clean overall maintenance frequency seemed low evidenced by overflowing trash bins/towels left behind plus flickering emergency exit lights remaining unfixed till next day morning! Considering its pricing perhaps better suited thinking this place akin more towards Business Hotel featuring attached Onsens rather than expecting full-fledged traditional hospitality typical elsewhere!

Not comfortable with smartphones? No problem!

Auto check-in and check-out are convenient, but if you forget important details or notes, you can contact the front desk via an external line (landline). If you're late for dinner without prior notice, there is no follow-up. These require you to keep track of everything yourself. The accommodation was clean, but with no elevator, it may not be suitable for those with physical disabilities. Is it too much to expect traditional Japanese accommodation services?

Japanese-style room with open-air bath, meals included, child 0-3 years old with meals and bedding.

The plan mentioned in the title is not cost-effective and not recommended. The children's dinner seemed to consist of frozen food. Additionally, it appeared to have been heated beforehand and left at the table, as it was cold during mealtime. It does not seem worth paying for. The open-air bath is not an onsen but merely a bathtub filled with tap water, and the cleanliness of the tub was concerning. The quality of the adult dinner was entirely unremarkable, and a medium-sized bottle of beer costs 1,100 yen. Breakfast was average, with children's meals being identical to adults'. One positive aspect was that beer was offered as a free-flow welcome drink. The facility's cleanliness was also average. Combined with its proximity to Lake Chuzenji, this accommodation feels overall ordinary; however, opting for an expensive plan is not worthwhile.

Compared to before, this time was disappointing.

This was my fifth stay here, the first in two years. I have always left satisfied in the past, but this time was disappointing. First, during check-in, I planned to relax with a welcome drink, but unlike before, beer and cold sake were no longer offered. Though disappointed, I decided to look forward to dinner instead. However, I could not have imagined how much the quality of the food had declined. Previously, even the light kaiseki meals were more than sufficient in both quality and quantity. This time we chose the basic "Take" course but found none of the dishes enjoyable except perhaps for the domestic beef sirloin; everything else fell short of expectations. Breakfast also showed a noticeable decline in quality—has there been a change in head chef? Beyond dining issues, I noticed that only one futon mattress was provided for sleeping; as a result, my body felt slightly sore by morning. Upon checking out and seeing another room's door open by chance, I noticed that other rooms had two futons stacked together—why is there such inconsistency? Additionally, our room's air conditioner made loud noises throughout the night which disrupted sleep multiple times. The onsen remains excellent with high-quality water and was one aspect we were fully satisfied with this time around. One suggestion would be to add either a cold bath or provide tubs filled with cold water near the outdoor baths for cooling off—it would be greatly appreciated. As for staff members: while it seemed there were fewer Japanese employees than before, everyone worked hard to provide good hospitality. Finally—and importantly—I truly like this hotel and want to leave feeling satisfied after each visit. To achieve this goal again moving forward: please avoid cost-cutting measures at all costs! Even if prices need slight increases instead—please aim for higher quality overall because otherwise repeat guests may stop returning altogether.

    The food was extreme...

The food was extremely disappointing. The quality was far below what you would expect from a 4-star Hotel and did not justify the price at all. There was no one at the lobby, only a sign saying "Please call this number," requiring guests to use their own phones to contact someone—something I have never seen in any Hotel before. A few staff members were very kind, but I don't think I will ever return. This is my first time writing a Review because the system and service were so terrible. It looks good in photos, but I truly cannot recommend it.

    That's unfortunate.

Check-out time is at 11:00 PM, as informed during the night reception. However, when I asked if it was not 10:00 AM, I was told, "Here it is 11:00." Thinking it was lucky to have extra time, I started my morning. Yet from 10:00 AM onwards, housekeeping opened my door three times without permission saying "Cleaning service." On the third time, I called the front desk. At check-out at 11:00 AM when heading to the front desk, no manager came out until requested. When they finally appeared with a nonchalant attitude and only apologized after being prompted by me about what happened. They then stated that "Check-out is actually at 10 am," despite prior miscommunication from their staff who admitted fault but still charged an additional ¥300 hot spring fee before quickly disappearing back inside. It seems basic hospitality or courtesy isn’t prioritized here since tourists will visit regardless due its location near attractions—but unfortunately ruined memories of Nikko forever lingered negatively instead!

The meal was disappointing (Bamboo Course).

As I usually eat small portions, I considered choosing the plan with smaller servings but opted for the standard course with regular portions this time. Unfortunately, the portion size was insufficient and left me unsatisfied. Many dishes seemed to be pre-made side dishes simply placed on small plates, and there were no freshly prepared or carefully cooked items like freshly fried dishes. The meat was labeled as domestic beef but didn’t seem to be Tochigi beef and had tendons in it. The vegetables consisted only of king oyster mushrooms and bell peppers. Both breakfast and dinner included grilled salmon that resembled frozen portions typically served at business hotel breakfasts. The mini-sized cake at the end also appeared to be a frozen product. The salad at breakfast seemed like shredded cabbage from a commercial bag, while the pickles were finely chopped Chinese-style shibazuke pickles. However, the white rice and miso soup were delicious.

    Public Bath

The open-air bath in the large public bath does not have a roof. According to my wife, during the morning bath, it was extremely hot and even foot bathing was impossible. While the men's side was fine, unfortunately, women were unable to use the open-air bath.

    Unfortunately!

The cuisine and onsen were both satisfying, but the building itself seemed old, and the room lacked a sense of cleanliness. At this price, is this room acceptable? It's disappointing for such a nice accommodation! However, I would like to express my gratitude for allowing us to get off and be picked up midway during the shuttle service!

    It was a good Property.

The onsen's indoor bath is 38 degrees, allowing for a long soak. The open-air bath is 40 degrees, also suitable for extended soaking. Regarding meals, dinner was very delicious. Breakfast wasn't bad either. The staff seemed very busy during meal times. We stayed in a room for four people, which felt slightly cramped. Overall, it was a highly satisfying property.
