    Its historic charm is truly captivating.

    I always stay at this Hotel without meals and choose a reasonably priced Room category, but the overall atmosphere of the Hotel is wonderful. The in-house tours are always explained carefully, and you can really feel its rich history. The service is excellent, as you would expect from a long-established Hotel, and it makes me want to stay again.

    “It's a little early for our agreed 6:00 p.m., but dinner is ready.” An elderly waiter rings a bell in the first-floor and second-floor lobbies.... You can enjoy a traditional and truly wonderful time. The international staff were also very kind.

    The Resort Hotel of Your Dreams

    At the Hotel, there was an evening tour introducing its history and architecture, and I joined. The guide provided many insights you wouldn’t learn just by staying there, which made my one-night, two-day trip even more fulfilling. I was also able to visit the Chuzenji Lake Hotel by shuttle bus, and I would definitely like to return in summer. The staff were courteous as well, making for a very pleasant stay.

    We stayed as a couple. Dinner at the main dining room was delicious, and we were very satisfied. It was also convenient for visiting Nikko Toshogu Shrine the next day. The service was attentive, and we had a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much.

    Both the good and ba...

    Both the good and bad points made sense to me once I accepted that it’s a classic Hotel. If you have your own reasons, it may be worth staying. If you’re there to enjoy the “time” itself, cost performance and satisfaction won’t necessarily go hand in hand.

    One-of-a-kind hospitality

    More international staff now work at the front desk, and the number of international guests has also been increasing. However, long-serving staff remain in the restaurant and on guided tours, and chatting with familiar Hotel staff is truly comforting. If you stay with us, please be sure to join an in-house tour at least once. You will surely experience a moment when the gentle weight of time comes warmly to mind.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    I stayed here using the Classic Hotel Passport. I had hoped to stay in the Main Building, but unfortunately I was assigned to the Second New Wing. The Second New Wing was reportedly added for the Tokyo Olympics, and while it wasn’t my first choice, I was still able to relax and enjoy my stay. The guided tour of the building was excellent. The Hotel bar was also wonderful. Overall, I was satisfied, but my impression was that staff varied between very good and not so good. Front desk staff in particular are the face of the Hotel, so I hope this will improve going forward. I’ll visit again, as next time I’d like to stay in the Main Building.

    It was a great experience.

    Overall, it was a good experience because I was able to stay at a classic Hotel at an affordable rate. However, there was no doorman when I arrived, and many of the staff seemed inexperienced, so despite the building’s heritage, I also felt firsthand how difficult it is to carry on the service standards of the good old days.

    For lovers of classic Hotels

    This was my second stay at Kanaya Hotel. I was able to relax comfortably and enjoy a wonderful, unhurried time. The lunch box I requested was also delicious on the train ride home. Kanaya Hotel feels like an art museum, and it’s a delightful Hotel for lovers of classic style.

    We’ll be back!

    It became a truly wonderful memory. The staff from overseas have studied hard and are doing their best, and they are excellent. Whenever I visit Nikko, I want to stay, dine, and be sure to stop by. I’m also looking forward to the reopening after the renovations. I’m grateful that I was able to use this Hotel in my lifetime as it continues its journey alongside such a remarkable history.

    A classic Hotel full of warmth and charm

    This was my first time staying at Japan’s oldest Hotel—an architectural landmark where you can truly feel the history, with a classic atmosphere that beautifully blends Western and Eastern styles. The Hotel itself was wonderful, and we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast; everything—from the cuisine to the front desk team and the dining staff—was excellent. It was a stay I’m truly glad we chose for such an important milestone in our lives. It was to celebrate my husband’s retirement, which also happened to be his birthday. We had never really celebrated birthdays outside of home before (and even then, nothing too grand), so this was our first time celebrating out. For both dinner and breakfast, they prepared a table with a view of the garden, and I was deeply grateful for everyone’s thoughtful care. Many staff members congratulated us, and although my husband looked a bit shy, he was genuinely happy. Seeing that made both me and our daughter very happy as well. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all the staff. Thanks to IKYU’s comment section where I mentioned his retirement and birthday in advance, it led to this wonderful connection with the Hotel and made it an unforgettable trip. We stayed in an annex Room that was calm and comfortable; before meals we watched the Winter Olympics together as a family there, chatting casually—it felt so special. Thank you again, IKYU. A staff member mentioned that the Hotel is often fully booked, and because I truly want everyone to experience it, I highly recommend it. The gift shop was also well stocked. Also, the hand soap by the sink had such a lovely scent that lingered for a long time every time we washed our hands—I ended up washing my hands more than necessary. If I had one regret, it’s that I didn’t know there was a private family bath, and that we could have taken a bus to the Onsen. I also only found out after arriving that there is a bus from Kanaya Hotel to Nikko Toshogu Shrine—if I had researched more beforehand, I would have added it to our plans earlier. I truly want to visit again. My husband has been a high school baseball coach until now, and I’m still working with almost no days off throughout the year. Even when we traveled out of prefecture for tournaments, he would be at the field while I spent all day in the gymnasium—looking back, I wish we had taken our children out more. Now that my husband is retiring, I hope we can travel even just a little more—and this trip became the spark that made me want to travel more too (even though it’s still hard for us to take time off). If our next travel connection can be through IKYU again, please do support us—and if you have any recommendations for what to book next, please let me know.

    Opinions may vary.

    I enjoy staying at tangible cultural properties and themed accommodations, and have stayed at several. This place was on my list, so I didn’t hesitate to choose the main building and a course meal with the standard menu. I knew it would be old, but it is kept very clean. That said, people may differ in how much age they can tolerate. There were no issues with the structure or fittings at all, but I felt some maintenance could be done—such as stains on the carpet, and leather sofas/chairs left as-is with little cushioning. The clawfoot bathtub has a nice atmosphere, but if you don’t understand how the drainage works before getting in, the bath mat ends up soaked. There was no note or guidance about that. Changing to consommé soup for dinner was absolutely the right choice—it was excellent. On the other hand, eating ayu down to the bones was a bit difficult. Overall, I felt the seasoning was on the strong side. One thing that bothered me at breakfast was that there was no cutlery rest; before the main omelet arrived, I had to ask them to clear my salad plate while still holding my silverware, and without anywhere to place it I had to rearrange things myself. No one told me to do so explicitly, but it felt necessary. As for service, it seemed to vary by staff member. Overall everyone was polite and pleasant, though they also seemed not very strong when it came to improvising. The building itself is enjoyable just by walking around on your own, but the in-house tour is also very interesting—I recommend joining it before visiting Toshogu Shrine if possible. Overall it was a good experience; however, regarding service and food in particular, I would like to visit Chuzenji as well if possible.

    Accommodation after the New Year holidays

    This was my first stay since 2020. As it was just after the New Year holidays, there were New Year decorations and the atmosphere was wonderful. Everyone was friendly and considerate with parking, check-in, and guiding us to our Room. The Room was spacious, bright, and had a great atmosphere. This time, I joined the in-house tour for the first time and really enjoyed it. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and I was able to spend a relaxing time. I had a very pleasant stay. I have been using this Accommodation for about 40 years, and I felt that its warm atmosphere has not changed.

    It felt like staying in a museum-like Hotel.

    As this is a long-established Hotel celebrating its 150th anniversary, this was my first stay. After check-in, I joined an in-house tour from 4:00 p.m. The revolving door, sculptures, pillars, and the beautifully painted ceiling—Japanese and Western elements blended throughout—made it a truly impressive Hotel, almost like a museum. My Room was No. 105 in the annex. From the window I could see a snow-covered garden and beautiful mountains in the distance—it looked like a painting. I was also surprised to learn that Helen Keller once stayed in this Room. Perhaps because it has been renovated, it had lovely wallpaper and modern furnishings, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere. When I asked the front desk for a shower cap, they provided one right away. They also brought me a humidifier when I requested it. The breakfast bread was delicious. The amenities were well stocked, making for a very comfortable stay. Although historic, the Hotel is beautifully maintained with great care and charm. The bed was very comfortable as well. This trip became a wonderful memory—thank you very much.

    A classic, relaxing Hotel!

    This was my fourth stay. It’s a Hotel I love, and it always gives me the same comforting sense of nostalgia. The views are great, and even the slightly slanted floors have their own charm. It’s also a good, reasonably priced option for solo travelers. The meals (especially dinner) and the apple pie are delicious! I heard the Hotel will be closed for a while in the near future due to major renovation work, and that even the old furniture will be replaced, so I definitely want to visit once more before the renovations.

    Overall, it was disappointing.

    I stayed in the main building, but the hallway and the Room were extremely cold. Perhaps it was because your much-touted steam heater wasn’t working. I was also disappointed that there were no croissants at breakfast.

    The service at the main dining room and the shop was extremely poor.

    The shop staff chatted nonstop regardless of whether guests were present, and while I was paying at the register, my phone was slow to respond and they muttered, “Huh?” and “So slow!” I use transit IC cards all the time and have never felt stressed about it before. In the main dining room, I was told that if you have a Reservation you don’t need to write your name and should wait there. In the end, people who wrote their names were called first, and then someone who pushed in saying, “I have a Reservation,” was seated immediately. Dessert was served to the table next to us by mistake; they seemed to realize it, took the plate back, and then kept it ready to serve to another table as-is. Seeing that made me uncomfortable. The plate placed on our table may have been that same one that had been taken back once. This is not at all meant to imply that the guests at the neighboring table were unclean in any way, but despite having sanitizer available and wearing masks, their awareness regarding food hygiene seemed low. The restaurant also did not ask us about any allergy ingredients. The front desk staff were pleasant and housekeeping was done properly, so it’s not that everyone behaved poorly—but I feel like I don’t need to go again. Before my reserved lunch time, I was relaxing on a sofa near the front desk when a large bus tour group suddenly surrounded me and startled me. It would have been nice if someone had simply said that a guided tour would be starting there; instead, I felt like I was being pushed out, which was also unpleasant.

    I was able to relax.

    I stayed in Nikko in January, mainly to visit Toshogu Shrine and to enjoy the Accommodation itself. I was traveling solo as a woman, and there were three other solo female guests in the restaurant at dinner. I was looking forward to dinner, so I chose the Kanaya Dinner and changed the soup to consommé. It was an outstanding soup. The signature sautéed Nikko rainbow trout is an exquisite dish you can only have here—I will definitely order it again next time. From the amuse-bouche to the final petits fours, every course was consistently excellent, perfectly balanced, and truly delicious. And all of the staff were smiling, easy to talk to, and kind. I stayed in the main building; my Room was simple and perfect for a calm, relaxing stay. Nikko in winter is relatively quiet both around town and at the Hotel, so I’d like to visit again.

    Your First Classic Hotel Experience

    We stayed at Kanaya Hotel, which my wife had long dreamed of visiting during our Nikko trip. The historic building and the history concierge’s explanations about the Hotel’s background and facilities made for a wonderful experience. Meals were served in a relaxed atmosphere, and we truly enjoyed the delicious Kanaya dinner. It became a Hotel we would love to return to.

    We stayed for dinner...

    We stayed for dinner and an overnight stay around our wedding anniversary. The annex was exceptionally comfortable. We were able to relax at a leisurely pace while enjoying the beautiful autumn leaves. The main dining room exceeded our expectations as well. We are glad we chose Kanaya Hotel. It is close to Toshogu Shrine and Lake Chuzenji, and with the good weather, it made for a wonderful trip.

    Dinner is excellent, but the bath is disappointing.

    The New Year's limited French course dinner was truly delicious. Not only was the taste exceptional, but the dishes were served with perfect timing, and the soup was provided at just the right temperature, showcasing true professionalism. However, as much as I enjoyed the meal, I was very disappointed with the bathroom in the Room. I stayed in a room called Orange Suite, but the hand shower in the shower booth was uncontrollable. Specifically, some of its holes seemed to be malfunctioning as water sprayed not only forward but also upwards, to the right and left—making it completely unusable. I had no choice but to use the ceiling-mounted shower instead; however, since it is fixed in place, it was inconvenient and disappointing. Please consider repairing this issue. Other Facilities in the Room were problem-free. I slept soundly and stayed warm throughout my stay. Thank you very much!

    We fully enjoyed the charm of a classic Hotel and the New Year holiday.

    This was my first stay over the New Year holidays. From the “Happy New Year” decorations at the entrance, to the beautiful seasonal floral arrangements throughout the building, everything was filled with a festive atmosphere. All staff members, in every section, were friendly. There were various New Year events as well, and I really enjoyed joining in—oshiruko (sweet red bean soup) service, first-calligraphy experiences, and painting activities. Above all, the age of this building is its greatest charm. The evening in-house tour was excellent; it was wonderful to hear explanations about the many carvings and architectural details. It’s a fantastic Hotel where you can truly enjoy a sense of history that is completely different from modern hotels. The area called “Dragon Palace” has great views and a pool—I'm sure it becomes lively again in summer. The meals and wine list were reasonably priced, the bread was outstandingly delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. The lovely bar is also a must-see: with firewood burning in an Oya-stone fireplace, I enjoyed fragrant gin while watching the flames. It was a space where I could have sat forever. The Room had everything I needed; the bath was spacious and the amenities were good. If it had an Onsen it would have been perfect—so that’s why I’m giving 4 stars for that point alone. I would definitely like to return again in another season.

    Classic Hotel

    At the end of the year, I stayed one night in the Orange Suite, produced by scriptwriter Kundo Koyama. I visited for the highly-rated dinner and Western-style breakfast, but the Hotel Room and hospitality exceeded my expectations, leaving me very satisfied. On my way back, I was also able to visit Nikko Toshogu Shrine for the first time in about 40 years, making it a wonderful holiday. Thank you very much!

    We had a truly wonderful time.

    I visited with my mother in August and had such a wonderful experience that I returned with my husband at the end of the year. Blessed with good weather, we enjoyed the crisp, serene winter air and tranquility of Nikko. The classic hotel is truly charming. It felt like an escape from our busy daily lives, allowing us to reflect on those who once visited this place and admire the various furnishings and artworks. The service was excellent, and the warm hospitality brought peace to our hearts. I would love to stay here again. - By joining the hotel's guided tour for guests, you can gain a deeper appreciation of its charm. The content varies slightly depending on the guide, so this time we enjoyed it from a different perspective compared to our summer visit. - You can enjoy Onsen at Kanaya Hotel by Lake Chuzenji for half price. We took a shuttle service to Kanaya Hotel by Lake Chuzenji and indulged in lunch and Onsen. - Dinner was light but sufficient for me. After savoring delicious dishes and bread while enjoying a relaxing time, we headed to the bar. In winter, the bar features a lit fireplace where you can also enjoy the scent of burning wood.

    I stayed in the newl...

    I stayed in the newly renovated annex, which retained its traditional charm while being beautifully updated, and the room was very comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the children's menu was well-received by my child, showing thoughtful consideration for families. Although I accidentally left something behind in the room after checking out and returning home, it was promptly arranged to be sent back to me safely. Thank you very much for your excellent service.

    Our stay was delightful.

    This was my first stay. It was a multiple night stay, and they thoughtfully ensured that the meals and seating arrangements did not overlap with the previous day. The room was absolutely lovely. Additionally, they responded politely to our detailed requests, which left me deeply impressed. I believe this is a wonderful classic hotel. Thank you very much!

    I experienced a Hotel that truly values trust.

    While relaxing in the Room after being shown to it, I noticed a minor mistake by the Hotel and contacted the front desk. As an apology, they upgraded my Room. It was such a small issue that I felt humbled by their gesture and realized how much this Hotel values trust and service. It turned out to be a great trip. Thank you very much!

    Classic Hotel

    I stayed at this accommodation for the purpose of collecting Classic Hotel Passport stamps. This was my seventh location, and it felt like the most "classic" hotel, for better or worse. The room's heating system only allowed airflow adjustment without temperature control, so as someone who dislikes heat, I turned it off at night (luckily, it was a warm winter day). The room amenities were well-equipped. The public spaces had many elements that evoked a sense of history, which made it very comfortable for someone like me who loves retro styles. The hotel tour conducted by the staff was an excellent event. There were many valuable items that could easily be overlooked without explanation, so I highly recommend first-time visitors to participate in this tour. For dinner, I chose the "Kanaya Dinner," which included dishes made from recipes passed down since the Taisho era. It felt like a time slip for my taste buds! The freshly baked bread was refillable and absolutely delicious—Kanaya's bread truly stands out! The historic Nikko Kanaya Hotel and Hakone Fujiya Hotel share similarities due to their founders being brothers. Comparing features such as their approach from the main street and building designs made this stay both fascinating and enjoyable. It is wonderful to see these historic buildings being carefully preserved. Within walking distance are attractions such as "Shinkyo Bridge" and "Toshogu Shrine," and its proximity to the station makes visiting via public transportation very convenient.
