    Everything was comfortable.

    We stayed here to celebrate my partner’s birthday. The service, the atmosphere, and the food were all wonderful, and we were able to relax and enjoy our time. Thank you very much.

    A Hotel with a Sense of History

    It’s an old but charmingly retro Hotel. The view from the window was great, and the Room felt calm and relaxing. Some things—like the thermometer—made me think, “Wow, this is still in use,” but that only added to its charm. I imagine it must be difficult to maintain the atmosphere of that era while preserving it, especially knowing that Einstein and Helen Keller once stayed here. I heard it will be closed for about two years for renovations starting sometime next year, and there may even be an Onsen—if so, I’d love to visit again.

    Unchanging charm

    As a historic Hotel, it is impressive that it still operates today despite the challenges of simply preserving it. The hospitality remains unchanged, and I was able to relax completely.

    The Classic Hotel—what a wonderful stay.

    Although the building is historic and old, it is well maintained, and we were able to spend a comfortable time in the front desk area, lobby, and restaurant. Our Room was in a renovated annex, so it was clean and calming, spacious, and the view from the window was full of greenery—perfect for relaxing. The provided loungewear was a two-piece pajama set, which helped us pack lighter. We also enjoyed an optional traditional dish: rainbow trout meunière, which we found very satisfying. Breakfast had a classic “The breakfast” atmosphere and made for a great start to the day. If you would like a window seat, it’s best to arrive early. The location is close to Toshogu Shrine, and there is a bus stop nearby as well, so it’s ideal for sightseeing without a car. There were no large tour groups among the guests, and we didn’t hear any loud voices. It would be perfect if there were an Onsen. We had a wonderful time—thank you very much.

    Overall, the meals, service, and facilities were excellent.

    The meals are on par with a fine-dining restaurant, and both the service and atmosphere are more than satisfactory. The clientele was pleasant, and we were able to enjoy our meal at a relaxed pace. The guest room is spacious enough and well stocked with amenities, but signs of age—such as ill-fitting windows and peeling paint—are hard to overlook, so it may not suit those expecting modern city Hotel facilities. I felt there may have been too few staff at check-in and check-out, but there were many impressive touches such as historical photo displays and furnishings that convey a sense of history. I sincerely hope this property will continue for many years to come through ongoing Facility maintenance and enhanced service.

    We had a great time.

    I was finally able to make a Reservation for the Orange Suite I’d been interested in, so I visited in July with high expectations. I arrived early and left my luggage, and the staff kindly helped me, even giving me a map of Toshogu Shrine along with helpful advice. The Room had an unusual layout: futons on the left as you enter, a living area on the right, and you cross between them like stepping stones. Also, no shoes indoors—which I personally appreciated. The futons were especially outstanding; the mattress was excellent and I slept deeply. In the morning I woke up early feeling refreshed—after staying at many Accommodations, this was by far the best sleep comfort I’ve had. Needless to say, the meals were wonderful. I also enjoyed the great atmosphere at the bar, and it was fun hearing lots of stories while exploring around the Hotel. While walking around inside the Hotel, we even wandered over to where the pool and skating rink are; my husband got bitten by a leech, and we caused some trouble asking a staff member for a bandage—thank you for your help. Now at home, I’m enjoying decorating my wall with the lid from the tin that held Baumkuchen we bought at the Hotel. Next time, I’d love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much.

    Please do it again.

    Travel means different things to different people, but for me, being embraced by a gentle world of greenery—unpolished and unpretentious—was one of the very best experiences among classic Hotels. The Facility is by no means the latest, and the washroom had limited space for toiletries, but the Room was spacious enough, and above all, the view of green from the window was beautiful. Even when walking inside and around the building, there is greenery everywhere, helping you forget everyday life. Dinner features plenty of vegetables with thoughtful presentation that makes it enjoyable. The ayu confit was refined and outstanding. The cheese omelet at breakfast was also excellent—the flavor of the eggs blending perfectly with the cheese. The only disappointment was that I couldn’t have apple pie inside the Hotel. Kanaya Hotel’s apple pie is an exquisite specialty that far surpasses that of a well-known Hotel in Karuizawa, and I’d enjoyed it whenever I had the chance—so I was looking forward to it—but it wasn’t served in-house. In the end, I had no choice but to buy one at the shop downstairs and eat it in my Room (laugh). With little time left in life—and probably not enough time to visit the same place again and again—Nikko Kanaya Hotel is one of those rare Hotels that still makes me want to return at least once more, including visits to nearby temples and shrines.

    Disappointing

    Was the Room a spare Room? It was at the back of the 3rd floor; the neighboring Rooms in front were the PV room, the women’s changing room, and the men’s changing room. There was no valuables box in the Room, and there was no notice saying that valuables could be kept at the front desk. The desk was old and flimsy wood, and the drawers did not open smoothly. The TV remote seemed faulty; both ON and OFF required pressing several times. The power outlet was under the desk near a corner of the Room, which was inconvenient to use. There was black mold in the grout lines of the bathroom tiles. The toilet is Western-style, but there is little space in front, making it very difficult for larger guests to use. Etc.

    A Wonderful Experience

    The architecture, service, and dining were all exceptional—an experience that went beyond anything I had imagined from a Hotel stay. Although the building is historic, it is clearly cared for with great attention, making for a very comfortable stay. This time we stayed in a suite in the annex, and the view of the main building from the window was beautifully framed; if you love architecture, I highly recommend viewing the main building from the annex. The food was also delicious, and it was a truly wonderful stay. Thank you very much.

    Although it was a Multiple Night Stay at a long-established Hotel, the aging of the Facility was noticeable.

    It was my first stay since my family visited when I was in elementary school over 60 years ago, but the aging of the Facility and other aspects was quite noticeable. I had both Western and Japanese breakfasts, and they were as good as rumored. I understand that major renovations are planned from next year onward, and I have high hopes for Tobu Railway’s full commitment. The service from the veteran staff was excellent, but there may be challenges in developing younger staff. With foreign-owned Hotels entering one after another, I hope to see this classic Hotel—one that represents Japan—revived.

    A classic Hotel with a sense of elegance and tradition

    Not only does the Hotel have a refined, elegant atmosphere, but the warm hospitality of the staff also made it extremely comfortable. Three of us stayed together, and they upgraded us to a larger Room, so we were able to relax and enjoy our time. Of course, the meals were excellent as well! We would love to stay again.

    An Unforgettable Stay at Nikko Kanaya Hotel

    My first trip to Nikko—staying at the Nikko Kanaya Hotel I had long admired! My daughter and I stayed in a Deluxe Twin in the annex. After checking in at the front desk, where you can truly feel the weight of history, we headed to the annex. The newer bath and toilet were easy to use and very clean. The Room impressed me from the moment we were shown in. The ceiling lights and calm-toned furnishings are elegant. And the greenery seen through the large windows is so beautiful; when you close the Japanese-style glass fittings inside the window, it creates another wonderful modern atmosphere. When you close the door at bedtime, it feels seamlessly integrated with the wall, which is very calming. From check-in to check-out, I didn’t want to leave the Hotel. The garden is lovely as well. Dinner was in the main building. A chime performance announces dinner time; with its graceful sound, everyone ascends the red-carpeted stairs to the dining room. The other guests were refined and composed, and every member of staff was courteous—smart service throughout. I was truly moved. We chose the standard dinner course; it was delicious and very filling. In the morning, we were seated at a table located above a different entrance than dinner, with a view outside. We chose a green smoothie and a cheese omelet—delicious! The bread and butter were also exceptionally good. After checkout, we took a taxi arranged by Hotel for three hours of sightseeing before heading home. The driver was very kind as well. It was a wonderful trip to Nikko. Thank you very much.

    It was a wonderful space—a stately building where you can feel its history and the warmth of its people, along with comfortable, welcoming guest rooms. The sautéed rainbow trout we had for dinner was also exquisite. I’d love to visit again just to enjoy that dish.

    History and tradition are well preserved.

    I previously dined at the restaurant and enjoyed the sautéed rainbow trout, so this time I stayed overnight to try the meals. Both the guest room and the cuisine were very satisfying. Above all, I could really feel that the staff cherish the history of Kanaya Hotel. Although management has changed from the Kanaya family to the Tobu Group, please continue to value its traditions and maintain this Hotel and its service. I would definitely stay again.

    The facilities are good, but there are major issues with the service.

    Both bathrobes still had dry-cleaning tags on them, which is an unacceptable mistake for a Hotel of this level. It’s the kind of thing that would draw complaints even at an inexpensive Business Hotel. Also, the full-course dinner portions were far too small. I may be comparing it to a same-class Hotel I stayed at the day before, where I was very satisfied, but this felt like about half the volume—so I had no choice but to fill up with extra bread. Even that bread was cold both times, which was disappointing. Are you aiming for Meiji-era portion sizes? That said, I really liked the sense of history in the Facility and the view from the annex window. In short, places that attract guests even without trying tend to fall behind on service—and that’s what I felt here. As it is now, it may suit older guests, but younger generations are unlikely to choose it a second time. I’m writing honestly because I hope you will take this seriously and recognize there is room for improvement.

    A Long-Awaited Stay

    This was my first stay in decades. Last time I stayed in the main building, but this time I stayed in the new wing; the Room had a classic atmosphere, a view of the garden, and was very comfortable. Dinner in the main dining room was a seasonal course meal with just the right portions, and I was very satisfied. For breakfast, I tried their popular omelet—it lived up to its reputation—and I also really enjoyed the bread. Unfortunately, my trip coincided with a typhoon so I could hardly do any sightseeing, but my stay at the Hotel was very satisfying. I would like to come back again to make up for the sightseeing next time.

    Participation in the Classic Hotel Stamp Rally

    I visited to take part in the Classic Hotel Stamp Rally. As for the building I was most looking forward to, not only was the interior wonderful, but there were also many more spaces than I had imagined from the outside. I really enjoyed walking around the property, including the guided tour. For the bath, I used the one in my Room. It was neither particularly good nor bad, so I rated it 3 stars. Regarding the meals, set courses can often feel too filling for me, but that day’s dishes were very satisfying while still being a comfortable amount—excellent overall. I especially loved the appetizer and the main meat dish. Personally, I would be happy if there were more options on the bar food menu—such as salami, Hotel curry, or cucumber sandwiches—so with that hope in mind, I rated it 4 stars. The Hotel goods were cute while still having a classic-hotel feel in their design, and the service was great as well. I had a very pleasant stay.

    I was very satisfied.

    My wife and I stayed at the Kanaya Hotel, which we had long wanted to experience. While historic buildings can sometimes be a bit inconvenient, this one is well maintained, and the bathroom facilities are properly updated and modern. The balance of old and new made for a very satisfying stay. The meals were delicious as well. An 11:00 check-out was great and allowed us to relax.

    We had a wonderful stay.

    My mother has always wanted to stay here someday, so we visited for the first time to celebrate her birthday. Not only the front desk staff, but also the restaurant team and everyone we passed in the hallways were wonderfully welcoming. The exhibits inside the Hotel and the garden had a charm unique to a classic Hotel, and one night didn’t feel like enough time. Just as featured in various media, both the meals and the birthday cake we ordered via room service were delicious, and my mother and I are already talking about coming back in another season.

    Nikko Kanaya Hotel

    I had a Classic Hotel passport, so this was a Hotel I had wanted to stay at. Every staff member provided pleasant service, and I felt that a long-established Hotel really is different. What was slightly disappointing was that there was no clock in the Room, and there was no dresser, which was a bit inconvenient. Other than that, I was very satisfied. Thank you very much. If I have the chance, I would definitely like to stay at this Hotel again.

    Thank you, Kanaya Hotel

    This was my second visit (solo trip). This time, my Room was changed to a larger one than I had reserved—plus it had a bathtub and a great view—so I enjoyed a truly blissful stay. Thank you very much. I also joined the in-house tour for the second time; the storytelling was engaging, easy to follow, and very worthwhile. Thank you for your hard work. The “Sleepy Cat” cocktail was delicious, and I was happy with both the DIAMOND member benefits and the lovely gift. Next time, I’d like to stay in the annex—and aim to complete them all! That’s my goal. I look forward to visiting again.

    It’s a historic Hote...

    It’s a historic Hotel, and I really enjoyed joining the in-house tour. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Hotel. The location is also very convenient, as Nikko Toshogu Shrine is within walking distance.

    We had a wonderful time at this charming Hotel.

    I visited during the season of beautiful fresh greenery and felt truly refreshed. On the first day, it was cold with heavy rain, so I went to Lake Chuzenji to enjoy the Onsen and lunch. After returning to Nikko, I joined an in-house tour. It was fascinating to imagine how guests used to spend their time at the Hotel and to take my time admiring the sculptures. I love walking down from the Hotel garden to the riverside; while it felt lonely at year-end, in May it was beautifully colored with fresh greenery and azaleas. The meals were outstanding, and I was able to unwind from everyday fatigue. Thank you for such a wonderful time. I will visit again in summer!

    I couldn’t sleep at all because of the staff noise.

    It was the worst experience I’ve had staying in Japan. Even though this was not a “reason-discount” Plan, we were assigned a Room surrounded by staff areas. The constant noise of doors being slammed and heavy footsteps went on nonstop. I considered asking to change Rooms, but it finally quieted down around midnight—only for the banging and knocking to start again from 5:00 a.m. I’ve occasionally experienced noise from other guests (young people or children), but this was the first time I couldn’t sleep because of staff noise. To make matters worse, an alarm clock in the Room—one we hadn’t set—started ringing. Apparently it isn’t turned off during cleaning. Looking back, the service from check-in onward was unlike anything I’ve experienced at a normal Accommodation. Even though we arrived by shuttle bus, we were told to speak up ourselves once it turned 3:00 p.m., weren’t even shown to a sofa, and were left waiting on cold chairs. Meanwhile, guests who arrived later were smoothly taken to their Rooms, and staff were busy excitedly taking commemorative photos with foreign tourists—leaving no chance to approach them. The building may have charm, but if your policy is to blatantly change your attitude depending on the guest, then there is no dignity behind it. If you’re placed in a noisy Room surrounded by staff areas, you should ask to change Rooms immediately. It won’t stop.

    My Favorite Accommodation

    Whenever I visit Nikko, I choose Kanaya Hotel. This time, I made a Reservation for the Orange Suite supervised by Kaoru Kundo. True to the concept of a “vitamin Hotel that energizes you just by staying,” it was a wonderful Room that felt healing both physically and mentally. As a book lover, I was also delighted to find so many books. This time, I joined the in-house tour for the first time and had a great time. The staff’s attentive service is one of the reasons I can always relax and enjoy my stay with peace of mind. It had been a while since my last trip to Nikko, but thanks to Kanaya Hotel, it became a truly restorative getaway. I would love to stay again on my next visit to Nikko. Thank you very much.

    The Warmth of Japan’s Classic Hotels

    I first learned about Nikko Kanaya Hotel decades ago, and at last I was able to visit. The moment I pushed the revolving door in the lobby and stepped inside, I was gently wrapped in the warm atmosphere of the Hotel. The evening in-house tour was wonderful. Not only did we learn about the Hotel’s history, but each decorative detail was explained, and even a bold three-story construction plan left me amazed. It truly made me feel the skill and spirit of the craftsmen of that era, when there was no heavy machinery. This was thanks to our guide—his stories were fascinating and his delivery superb. I had such a great time. He mentioned he is 80 years old, so I hope he takes good care of himself and continues sharing many more delightful stories about the Hotel. And the traditional Kanaya dinner was absolutely delicious! Lately I’ve found rich flavors a bit difficult, so I was slightly worried—but there was no need. The consommé soup had remarkable depth, and the Taisho croquette stood apart from today’s trendy béchamel crab cream croquettes; it easily exceeded what I had imagined. The sautéed rainbow trout I’d been looking forward to was soft and delicate—truly one of a kind. After dinner, my jazz-loving husband and I went to an authentic bar. By the crackling fireplace, we enjoyed records along with a delicious original non-alcoholic cocktail. Time seemed to slow down, and we could relax from the heart—it really was a perfect night. The Room was spacious enough, came with a humidifier, and the bed was comfortable—I slept soundly until morning. If I may mention one small point: perhaps because it’s sized for international guests, the bathroom felt very large, so it didn’t warm up enough with just a shower and felt a bit chilly (it may also have been seasonal). I recommend warming both the Room and bathroom with heating before taking your shower. Breakfast was excellent—the omelet I selected was beautifully made. One sip of the green smoothie made me blurt out without thinking: “Oh—this is good.” Casual conversation with one of the female staff members who kindly refilled my coffee several times is also one of my fond memories. After breakfast, as I took photos of an Akayashio azalea blooming bright pink in front of the Hotel, a staff member spoke to us and even showed us around—the pool area, skating rink, and also where Sota Fujii played his Kisei title match—which truly moved me. You can really feel how much all of the staff love this Hotel; I would absolutely like to visit again.

    Its historic charm is truly captivating.

    I always stay at this Hotel without meals and choose a reasonably priced Room category, but the overall atmosphere of the Hotel is wonderful. The in-house tours are always explained carefully, and you can really feel its rich history. The service is excellent, as you would expect from a long-established Hotel, and it makes me want to stay again.

    “It's a little early for our agreed 6:00 p.m., but dinner is ready.” An elderly waiter rings a bell in the first-floor and second-floor lobbies.... You can enjoy a traditional and truly wonderful time. The international staff were also very kind.
