A wonderful Accommodation filled with warm hospitality!

We stayed here to celebrate my mother’s birthday. As I was traveling with my elderly mother, I hesitated until the very last minute about whether it was wise to go far. But because she loves Onsen so much, I decided to make the trip in hopes of making her happy. Even though it was a last-minute Reservation, when I told you it was for my mother’s birthday, you responded quickly and courteously. Your warm message—“All of our staff will do our very best to make it a memorable day”—truly meant a lot to me. We were also looking forward to enjoying the baths at Dogo Onsen and the meals, and above all, seeing how happy my mother would be on the day. After we arrived at the Accommodation, everything exceeded our expectations: delicious food, soothing baths, and most of all the wonderful hospitality from your staff. The birthday surprise for my mother was a huge success!!! She was so happy she even cried. The property was spotless and beautifully maintained. The expansive garden filled with lush greenery was especially breathtaking! Thank you so much for giving our family such an unforgettable and special time. We will definitely return.

The elegance and service of a long-established Onsen Ryokan

I stayed at this Onsen Ryokan, which has connections to Soseki Natsume and Shiki, and it was truly a wonderful Accommodation. The sense of tradition, the excellent service from the staff, and the quality of the hot spring water were all outstanding—I was genuinely glad I chose to stay here. Perhaps due to the season, I encountered several women with a “gyaru” vibe filming dance videos at the café attached to the lobby, as well as a man dressed inappropriately who spoke loudly and treated staff rudely. It was disappointing to feel that guest manners had declined. This is such a lovely place that it made me wish guests would also spend their time here with dignity and consideration. The restaurant’s lunch service is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so I wasn’t able to try the beef steak rice bowl. I would be happy if you could consider offering steak dishes or steak sandwiches at the café or during dinner as well. Next time, I’d like to visit with my elderly parents.

    We had a wonderful stay.

We stayed for one night in July. A senior colleague who lives in Ehime Prefecture recommended Funaya, saying that if we were going to stay anywhere, it should be Funaya—so we decided to stay together. We were both truly impressed. The meals were excellent, both dinner and breakfast. The fish was incredibly fresh—we were amazed. The Room was also impeccable in every way, with nothing to complain about. We would definitely like to stay again.

If you’re staying multiple nights, we highly recommend choosing the Western-style meal plan.

We were warmly and attentively looked after by a large team of staff. The meals were beyond wonderful. Of course the Japanese cuisine was excellent, but I especially want to highlight the Western dishes: the Rossini served with a sorbet in between courses was astonishingly delicious! After that came fromage, fresh fruit, and petits fours. The full-course meal that followed was an unexpected and deeply moving experience—more than enough reason to return. This time, my husband’s long-held wish finally came true, and the three of us—my husband, our daughter, and I—visited Matsuyama. The itinerary we planned as part of a “Saka no Ue no Kumo” tour went smoothly despite the intense heat, and we headed home completely satisfied.

    Top-Level Satisfaction

Everything was top-notch—the location, the bath, the variety and quality of the meals, the seasoning, the view from the large veranda, and even the bed. The staff were also very polite and full of kindness. When I visit Matsuyama again, I will definitely stay at Funaya. Thank you very much.

    Attentive, detail-oriented hospitality

From the reception and parking assistance to the Room amenities and cleanliness, the beautiful presentation and deliciousness of the meals, and the large garden and public bath, I was impressed by how attentive everything was. It was a Ryokan that truly felt like a model of Japanese hospitality. Thank you to all the staff.

    Traveling with 6 friends

We stayed in one Room with six adults. It was great to relax with in-room dining without having to worry about other guests. We noticed an unpleasant sewage-like smell from the washbasin area, but otherwise we were very satisfied.

    It was a great accommodation.

This long-established Hotel was very comfortable, and the staff were attentive and welcoming. We chose a French course for dinner and were surprised by how generous it was from the amuse-bouche onward. We had a Japanese breakfast, which also offered a wide variety of dishes. The Onsen was great too, but this Accommodation might be especially perfect for hearty eaters (lol).

Enjoy a memorable stay at a long-established Ryokan.

I stayed at this long-established Ryokan for the first time in a while. With Dogo Onsen sightseeing within walking distance, the location was excellent, and everything—from the Onsen to the cuisine and service—was outstanding, making it a truly memorable trip. At dinner, I enjoyed their famous sea bream rice and was impressed by its refined flavor. This time I chose an in-room dining Plan, but they kindly changed breakfast to their chair-seating restaurant upon request, for which I am very grateful. The property was quiet and relaxing, and I felt it offered a comfortable environment even for older guests to unwind. They also extended thoughtful gestures for my 60th birthday celebration, and their warm hospitality truly touched me. I also noticed well-mannered independent travelers from overseas, adding to the calm atmosphere. I would love to return again next time.

A wonderful balance of historic charm and modern style.

You can enjoy nearby attractions such as Dogo Onsen and Haikara Street. The staff were very attentive, and we were satisfied with the meals and the large public bath, making for a wonderful day. Thank you for celebrating my birthday.

I felt the enduring strength of this long-established Ryokan.

This was my first visit to Dogo Onsen in 55 years. Last year, my son visited on a solo trip and raved that it was “a wonderful place,” so this Golden Week my spouse and I came by plane and bus. When we asked at the information desk near the bus stop, we were told, “It’s the building with the fish logo you can see over there.” From the outside it looked rather understated—almost like a Ryokan geared toward school trips—so at first we wondered if we’d been directed to the wrong place. We arrived within a few minutes on foot, but even the entrance felt modest, and I’ll admit I briefly thought it might be an Accommodation that relied only on its long history. However, that concern vanished the moment we stepped inside. The welcome from the staff was impeccable—exactly what you’d expect from a long-established Ryokan—and throughout the property everything felt both luxurious and immaculately clean. The Japanese-Western room we stayed in this time was an artist collaboration room. The interior was modern yet calming, truly wonderful, and left a lasting impression. We came without any prior knowledge, but it seems Dogo Onsen as a whole is actively working with contemporary artists. We heard that several Ryokan partner with specific artists to create thoughtfully designed spaces. It also reminded me that Dogo Onsen Honkan collaborated with Mika Ninagawa; I was genuinely impressed by this town-wide initiative blending a historic Onsen district with contemporary art. I sincerely hope these inspiring efforts will continue. The large public bath was spacious and extremely clean. While the atmosphere of Dogo Onsen Honkan is hard to beat, its baths are somewhat small—so relaxing at leisure in this Ryokan’s roomy bath had its own special charm. We ate dinner out, so I won’t comment on that, but for breakfast (with both Japanese and Western options) we chose Western style and enjoyed it very much. Rather than resting on its long history and tradition alone, Funaya continues to evolve by embracing fresh ideas. It was a truly excellent Accommodation—one we’ll be happy to keep supporting in years to come.

    Top 5 Best Accommodations

Top 3 for great meals—I enjoyed each of the four nights. However, the first night’s meal was the best. I hope you keep it up from the second day onward. The same goes for breakfast. The service is excellent; it’s great that guest information is well shared among the staff. There was a small misunderstanding, but it was resolved quickly. I will definitely come again—maybe during the autumn foliage season.

    Your First Trip to Matsuyama

In mid-March, I planned a trip to Matsuyama and chose Funaya because I like Natsume Soseki. However, I spent too long deciding on a Ryokan and ended up double-booking. After being contacted by Funaya, a Cancellation Fee was charged, but it was kept to the minimum. Thank you for your help at that time. However, when we arrived at Funaya on April 2 and were shown to our Room, after the staff member left and my mother and I were about to have tea, we noticed that the teacup was dirty. It was quite disappointing. Dinner while viewing the cherry blossoms at night was wonderful—everything was delicious. Thank you for the floor cushion as well. Thanks to your kindness, both my mother and I were able to spend a truly lovely time.

    Thoughtful attention to detail

They kindly prepared a packed breakfast for my daughter who was leaving before breakfast hours, and their thoughtful service—such as storing our luggage after check-out and providing a place to change—was exactly what you would expect from a long-established inn. We would love to stay again if we have the opportunity.

    A Long-Awaited Stay

The detailed repairs have progressed, making this a comfortable stay. The service from the experienced attendant assigned to our Room was excellent, and it reminded us of what makes a Japanese Ryokan so special. The only minor drawback was that there was no deodorizing spray in the restroom. We plan to visit again in a different season.

    Traditional Accommodation

The room was relaxing, and both the fugu kaiseki dinner and breakfast were satisfying. We had a delightful evening discussing the smooth texture of shirako with my sons. The garden still had some late autumn leaves by the riverside, adding to the seasonal charm. The accommodation is conveniently located near Dogo Onsen Station, and the onsen was excellent with nothing to complain about—except perhaps for elderly guests with mobility issues who might find using stairs challenging. I hope to visit again in autumn. (Note: Due to changing my mobile number, I couldn't leave a review from my new phone at the time of our stay. This review is being posted later from my old phone after returning home.)

It was a calm and very nice Ryokan.

Great location. Despite the busy holiday weekend, the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. The meals, onsen, and garden were all excellent. It has the charm of a traditional ryokan, which adds to its appeal.

    Gratitude

After a four-hour drive from home, we arrived at Dogo Onsen Funaya. After check-in, we strolled through the garden and soaked in the foot bath to ease our fatigue. Before dinner, we enjoyed the Onsen and were able to fully relax. We were extremely satisfied with both the quality and generous portions of the French cuisine, as well as the warm service from the friendly male staff member who served our meal. This trip also made me reflect on how much my family’s emotional support sustains my life today, and I was reminded once again how grateful I am. It reaffirmed for me that feelings of gratitude—saying “thank you”—should be expressed in words.

Accommodation from the Good Old Days

Stayed on New Year's Day. I was aware of the age of the accommodation, but I was looking forward to experiencing its classical charm. The room was in the South Wing and newly renovated, so it was very clean, spacious, and both the bathroom and toilet were in excellent condition. However... We were three adults staying together, but one person had to use a sofa bed. Even though there was enough space to add an extra bed! To my surprise, only one side of an L-shaped sofa was used as a "bed" with bedding laid on top. For a child, this might be acceptable, but for an adult, it’s too narrow even to turn over while sleeping. We ended up rearranging another part of the sofa ourselves to create a proper bed setup. Considering the not-so-cheap accommodation fee, I would have appreciated if an extra bed had been provided. As for meals—they weren’t bad at all—but they felt somewhat outdated in taste. It seemed like quantity took precedence over quality. When there’s one disappointing aspect during your stay, it becomes hard to focus on other positive aspects; unfortunately, this left me feeling disappointed at the start of the new year. That said, I am grateful for all staff members who provided very pleasant and courteous service throughout our stay!

    A Relaxing Onsen Accommodation

We stayed as a couple. The hinoki bath Onsen was relaxing and very pleasant. We only had breakfast, which offered a choice between Japanese and Western styles; we chose Japanese. The variety of side dishes was abundant, and everything was delicious. The service was comfortable, and the courtyard maple trees along with the lobby floor provided a calm atmosphere, making it an excellent experience overall. Funaya is conveniently located near Dogo Onsen Station, Dogo Onsen Shopping Street, Dogo Onsen Main Building, the Shiki Memorial Museum, and Isaniwa Shrine. We would love to stay here again when visiting Matsuyama!

    Everything was excellent.

We stayed as a group of three men. First, we were surprised by the spaciousness of the room. Later, we found out that our room had been upgraded without us being informed, which deeply moved us. It seems they upgraded it secretly without mentioning it to us. The bath was also spacious and clean, with free-flowing hot spring water that felt wonderful to use. The meals were delicious, and the staff were friendly and cheerful, making our stay enjoyable. Breakfast was especially delightful with a wide variety of dishes beautifully arranged—a truly happy moment for us. Despite the reasonable price, this accommodation felt like a higher-class experience. Thank you very much!

    The room layout was concerning.

The room we stayed in was a Japanese-style room with added beds, which caused inconvenience in various aspects. Boiling water had to be done in the hallway, the TV was small and placed in a corner, making it hard to view from both the sofa and the bed. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, which was a relief, but unfortunately, the room itself was disappointing.

Dogo Onsen after climbing Mount Ishizuchi

It was a very nice Ryokan. The staff were polite and kind, and the Room was just the right size and comfortable. The Onsen was excellent and very relaxing. I only had breakfast, but it was very delicious. I think it would have been even better if I could enjoy the meal while looking at the garden scenery. Next time, I would like to try dinner as well.

    I stayed in a Japane...

I stayed in a Japanese-Western Room by myself, which had a terrace offering a fantastic view of Matsuyama Castle in the distance. The room was spacious and perfect. The Plan included only breakfast, but it was so delicious that I might have eaten more than usual. I would definitely love to stay here again when I visit Matsuyama.

    Unchanging peace of mind

10 years ago, I stayed here with my mother and four daughters and had a wonderful experience. This time, I revisited with my now-adult daughters for a trip with the three of us. We chose the garden-side room plan with kaiseki cuisine by the river, but our room was upgraded to one with two beds and a spacious tatami-style Japanese room. It was large enough that we didn’t have to compete for power outlets and could enjoy a comfortable stay. The onsen water was at just the right temperature, leaving our skin smooth without needing moisturizer. Compared to 10 years ago, Dogo Onsen Main Building seemed crowded with foreign visitors and less relaxing, so we only used the hotel’s onsen—and it was absolutely satisfying! The kaiseki cuisine by the river in a private tatami-floored room featured table seating. The beautifully presented dishes even stimulated the appetite of my children who usually eat lightly—they finished everything! Next time, I’d love to visit in June when we can see fireflies as well.

    Cozy Accommodation

We stayed on May 28th as a group of three friends. First of all, the staff's courteous and attentive service gave us a sense of comfort, and we truly felt what hospitality is all about. The meals were carefully prepared and absolutely delicious. The Onsen in the large public bath was excellent, and we appreciated how clean everything was, with fresh towels always available. During our evening stroll in the garden, we were moved by the sight of fireflies. Unfortunately, due to our schedule, we couldn't explore the garden or use the footbath during the day, which was a bit disappointing. It was our first visit to Dogo Onsen, but thanks to Funaya's wonderful service, it became an even more memorable experience. Thank you very much! We would love to stay here again when visiting Dogo Onsen in the future!

    First Visit to Dogo Onsen

It felt like a historic Ryokan, yet the facilities were excellent, making it a wonderful accommodation. The food was all incredibly delicious, and the Onsen was amazing. Although it was a short stay during our drive trip from Zushi to Shimonoseki and Moji, we were able to relax. Next time, we hope to visit for a longer stay. Now we're heading back to Yokosuka by ferry. Thank you very much!
