A Hotel Where You’ll Lose Track of Time

This was my 8th stop on a classic Hotel tour. The atmosphere was wonderful, and I ended up extending my stay—spending three nights and four days in two rooms in the main building: Premium Classic and Premium Panorama Corner. Both Rooms were excellent, but personally I especially loved the ambiance of the Premium Classic. The Premium Panorama Corner has a sofa, so it’s great for relaxing. And since we were on the first floor this time, we could see deer up close outside the window in the morning and evening—they were adorable. The entire building has a charming design that truly conveys its history, and I found myself forgetting how time was passing just by looking around. With such a beautiful building, delicious food, and friendly staff, I was completely satisfied—three nights and four days still didn’t feel like enough. Now that the West Wing has reopened after renovation, I’d love to stay there next time. Nara Park is also within walking distance, making it an ideal base for sightseeing. The deer are cute and everyone is kind—Nara was amazing.

Thank you for taking care of us again after 25 years.

It was our first stay in a long time since we visited when my child was very young. The sense of satisfaction you can only experience at a long-established Hotel was still there—nothing about the impression had changed. Even though we made a last-minute request for the restaurant, there was an extensive menu available and we were able to enjoy it fully. Many Hotels these days require you to ask before you can use amenities, but everything necessary was provided here in ample supply. Of course, we plan to return. We will continue to support you.

I wish it had been clearly stated at the time of Reservation that parking would not be available.

The only point deducted for the Facilities was that the parking lot was unavailable due to construction, so we had to use a nearby paid parking lot. Other than that, it was a perfect Accommodation. The Room was exotic with bamboo blinds, and the bathtub had claw feet. The shrimp and Eggs Benedict my wife had at dinner and breakfast came with Narazuke tartar sauce, which really let us experience Nara, and my beef stew at dinner truly lived up to its reputation as a signature dish. The kakinoha sushi we bought as a souvenir at the Hotel shop was also very delicious.

    I was satisfied.

I have stayed here several times, but this was my first time in a Room on the 2nd floor of the main building. The view was great, and since it was a corner Room, it felt calm and relaxing. The bathroom has been renovated, making the stay even more comfortable. However, the amenities (shampoo and conditioner) were different from before. I liked the previous scent, so that was disappointing. Other than that, the service was courteous and I was very satisfied.

Overall, Nara Hotel is wonderful, but what’s not acceptable is not acceptable. It’s the lack of attention to detail.

The atmosphere of the main wooden building is wonderful, and the food is delicious.

The atmosphere of the wooden main building is wonderful and relaxing. I had both dinner and breakfast, and the food is always delicious. The tableware and cutlery used for the meals are also lovely. The front desk, bell staff, and restaurant staff were all very courteous. I was a bit concerned that the pillow was low and the washbasin counter was also low. Even though the bed is quite high, I found it strange that the washbasin counter was so low. (Since there was open space underneath, it may be a universal design to accommodate wheelchair users.) It would be nice to have hooks for bath towels and bathrobes.

A little something for those scorching summer days.

The dignified building, visible even from the lakeside, is truly outstanding. Inside, too—its charming staircases and wide corridors—it feels as if you have stepped back in time. The standard room we stayed in was clean, but the sink area was inconveniently small; the room itself was not spacious and the view was nothing special. The apple pie served upon arrival had one of the finest aromas and flavors among classic hotels, on par with Nikko Kanaya Hotel. The omelet with ratatouille at breakfast was also excellent. However, with construction underway on the West Wing, the shortcut down to Naramachi was closed; walking required a long detour, which is tough in extreme summer heat. On top of that, the parking lot is downhill, and you have to climb an uphill slope of about 200 m to reach the entrance. When I asked to park near the entrance for about 15 minutes to load/unload luggage and pick up family members (there is quite a large space in front of the entrance), I was met with an openly displeased expression—as if I were making an unreasonable complaint. It seemed they had no consideration for guests arriving in extreme heat. Some staff did not even know where the smoking area was located, and overall the service lacked hospitality. I hope things improve once construction on the West Wing is completed.

    Style

This is a Hotel I had always wanted to stay at. The classic interior and solid, stately construction were even more impressive than I expected. However, it was disappointing that the bathroom was a unit bath. Still, without going out, I was able to spend a relaxing time inside the Hotel. I would like to visit again in a nicer season.

"Nara Hotel in a Summer Twilight"

For me, the best season at Nara Hotel is summer at dusk. A dim corridor where the strong sunlight doesn’t reach, floorboards that creak even when you walk quietly, and cicadas that sound different from Tokyo. Although many guests must be staying here, it’s strange how you hardly meet anyone. I’m glad I was able to visit in summer. This time I stayed in a Room with a bathroom that includes a separate washing area, and it’s one of my top recommendations in the Main Building. I’m looking forward to seeing the new wing (West Wing) completed as well, but for me, it has to be the Main Building. I’d love to come back again soon—but I’ll make it summer again. Please let me stay again!

A Short Getaway to Enjoy Nara Hotel

Thank you very much for your hospitality the other day. Because sightseeing during the hot summer season can be challenging, this was a trip with my daughter planned to fully enjoy the newly renovated Nara Hotel. We were relieved to find that the classic, dignified interior remains unchanged. At the same time, features in the Room such as the bathtub are modern and made our stay very comfortable. We were able to relax and forget about the heat outside while enjoying afternoon tea at Mikasa and breakfast. Next time, I would like to invite my husband as well and plan a trip simply to unwind. My sincere thanks to all of your staff.

A Historic Building and First-Class Service

We traveled to Nara to stay at Nara Hotel, and my spouse and I stayed in a Main Building Deluxe Tradition Room. [Room] - The room had a classic, atmospheric feel, yet it was well maintained. With the high ceiling, it felt very spacious. There was a note saying that sound carries in the wooden building, and we could indeed hear voices from the corridor, but perhaps because of the roomy layout, it didn’t bother us. - From the shower area next to the bathtub, you can see blue sky and greenery through the window, which was very soothing. There were two bath salts provided as amenities, and the hair dryer was a Repronizer. - The Room included 2 liters of water; a coffee/tea maker (two pods each); two small bottles of beer; and one small bottle of sake—all complimentary (alcohol depends on Room grade). [Dining] - We had dinner with the Kasuga course and enjoyed everything; in particular, the beef fillet steak topped with foie gras was outstanding. At other classic hotels I’ve felt tense during meals, but here we were able to dine comfortably thanks to a female staff member from Osaka who served us—relaxed in a good way. - For breakfast you can choose juice, bread, and an egg dish from several options (and also choose coffee or tea). We chose Eggs Benedict and an omelet (with cheese), plus French toast for bread—everything was delicious. [Service] - With an IKYU benefit we were scheduled for early check-in from 2:00 p.m., but it was so hot that even the deer looked exhausted. We arrived at around 12:30 p.m., hoping to cool down in the lobby for a while. Since we had luggage for four nights, I asked a male front desk staff member if they could store our bags—and he kindly offered to show us to our Room if we wished. He had both calm professionalism and gentle manners; from check-in onward I became completely taken with Nara Hotel. - After letting them know in advance that it was my birthday, they provided various thoughtful services that truly moved me. - The female staff member who escorted us to our Room seemed slightly nervous but worked very hard and left a great impression. - The morning service offering pastries/sweets and coffee at the café was also wonderful. - We also visited the bar; when we tried ordering cocktails served in “Puyi” glasses (+1,000 yen) for both of us, they advised against using one of those glasses because cloudiness would make its pattern look less beautiful. I admired how they prioritized guests’ experience over sales.

    The staff were very attentive.

Especially the front desk team—everything from check-in to room service was explained clearly and concisely, and the guidance provided was flawless. I imagine you have thoroughly listed possible guest questions and worked together to ensure guests never feel uneasy. The younger staff members were also sincere and left a great impression. The in-room bathroom had climate control with a choice of heating or cooling, which was very comfortable. I’m glad I was able to stay at this classic Hotel. Thank you very much, everyone.

    Disappointing dinner.

This was an Accommodation I had long wanted to stay at. The classic building has a wonderful atmosphere and feels very relaxing. The Room felt inconvenient to use because the area around the sink was quite small. What disappointed me was dinner. The portions were simply not enough, and I had no choice but to fill up on the unlimited bread refills. While the all-you-can-drink option is appreciated, I would rather see more effort put into the food than the drinks. This time, I was able to stay at a discounted rate thanks to an early Reservation, but I think opinions will be divided because the regular price is quite high.

Back in Nara After a Long Time

My wife and I visited Nara on a weekday shortly before the summer holidays began. We had seen an article saying that part of Nara Hotel’s renovations had been completed and the restaurant was open again, so we stayed in the main building on a Plan with dinner and breakfast included. After some sightseeing, we arrived at the Hotel. The staff were kind and welcoming, with warm hospitality.\nBefore dinner, we joined an event introducing the Hotel’s history. It was refreshing and enjoyable to look back on its long heritage once again. Dinner was delicious, and we were able to relax and take our time throughout our stay.\nWe truly enjoyed a slow-paced, satisfying Hotel experience. It was a happy moment to feel that this historic Hotel continues to welcome guests with the same warmth as ever.

    Relax at a historic Hotel

The Nara Hotel I’d always dreamed of staying at was wonderful—wooden yet modern, with a high-ceilinged Room. The building is well maintained even in its older areas, and the water facilities were nicely updated and very clean, which was great. There was no issue with the stay itself, but it was a shame that the exit toward the Naramachi area was closed due to construction, so we had to take a bit of a detour. The staff member in charge of our Room was also very pleasant, and we had a comfortable stay. The Hotel stored our luggage while we visited Todai-ji Temple. After returning to the Hotel, we relaxed with tea and took a break. They also drove us to the station—we were very satisfied.

    Wonderful Hotel

A traditional Hotel with the charm of a bygone era. I imagine it takes great effort to preserve these historic features. Wonderful paintings are displayed throughout, and the Uemura Shoen artwork in the lobby is especially worth seeing. I’m glad I had the chance to view it. At dinner, we also enjoyed some fascinating stories from the staff, which made our stay truly enjoyable. Thank you very much.

As expected—the pride of Japanese tradition.

As expected of a traditional, historic Hotel from Japan’s good old days. The staff were all wonderful. However, even though construction was underway, it was disappointing that there was no parking available; at the very least, an affiliated parking lot would have been appreciated.

    What does early check-in mean?

I booked an early check-in Plan and arrived after informing you of my arrival time in advance. However, the Room I was shown to was directly in front of the area where housekeeping staff were constantly coming and going. I couldn’t help thinking, “Wait, this Room?” Because it was early check-in, it was naturally hectic—voices calling out to each other, and it felt like many Hotel staff were gathered right outside my door. It wasn’t relaxing at all. Even though I was told a late check-out would be OK, there was no way I could unwind, so I checked out early. Considering the purpose of a 24-hour stay Plan, it didn’t feel like the Room assignment took that into account at all. I don’t think it was intentional, but still. At the moment part of the property is under renovation, and many staff members seemed to be in training. Only a few had the steady professionalism you’d expect from an established Hotel. This is a Hotel I had wanted to stay at at least once, but my timing seems to have been unfortunate. Disappointing.

    Historic Classic Hotel

Staying at the accommodation and simply exploring the building is an enjoyable experience (paintings, pottery, piano, chandeliers, architecture, etc.). As it is a historically significant and valuable piece of architecture, I felt that guests should stay with a sincere mindset. The Japanese sake cocktails at "The Bar" were absolutely delicious.

It was a Hotel where you could feel the tradition, similar to Fujiya Hotel. I'm glad I could stay before it goes under renovation for about half a year.

    A disappointing feeling

The building is historic, and we chose a Room in the old wing. Although the Room itself felt dated, the bathroom facilities were close to modern, and since it is a wooden structure, there was thoughtful attention to comfort—heating in the corridors and Rooms, and even heating in the bath area. Unfortunately, the issue was with the Hotel service staff. First, before check-in we went for a lunch Reservation. At the entrance I gave my Reservation name and was shown to our seat, but they addressed me by a different name. After that it was fine. The next morning at breakfast, I mentioned to a staff member that the bread at lunch had been delicious. They told me breakfast also offers several types of bread and that it is very good as well. The person who came to take our order happened to be the same person who served us at lunch, so I asked whether refills of bread were possible; they said of course it was fine. However, when I asked another nearby staff member for more bread, they told me “That bread cannot be refilled,” and walked away. As we were finishing breakfast with fruit, that staff member returned and said, “I checked—bread refills are available.” I appreciate them checking, but there was no apology or sense of concern despite quite some time having passed. After checkout, we used an IKYU benefit drink ticket in the lounge and had sandwiches and cake. When it came time to pay and I handed over our table number card, they mentioned items we had not ordered at all and tried to charge us a high amount. Although I wanted to say “I just gave you my drink ticket,” I stayed calm and asked whether the amount might be incorrect—and confirmed that tea should be free with the drink ticket. They responded sharply: “Huh?! Free?! What do you mean?” It did not seem like they thought they could be mistaken at all. After repeating this exchange several times: “Oh—I had the wrong table number card. Sorry.” A colleague from Nara told me how special it would be to stay at Nara Hotel (Hotel), but considering this is not an inexpensive Accommodation (Accommodation), these responses were unacceptable. I will not stay again. Seeing deer in the Hotel garden did make for some nice memories—but there were simply too many unpleasant incidents that outweighed them.

    Before the New Year

The Hotel will temporarily close from early 2026, so I stayed here before the New Year during my trip to the historic city (this was a repeat visit following January 2025). This time, I ordered both breakfast and dinner, and I was satisfied with both the taste and portion size. For breakfast, I chose Western-style since it was my second time, and it was also excellent. The closure is to preserve its history and tradition, but this is one of the Hotels I'd love to visit again once it reopens.

I stayed at this Hotel for two nights after learning it would be closed for a major renovation in the first half of next year. Thanks to the refined and graceful hospitality of this long-established Hotel, I was able to fully enjoy the elegant atmosphere of the main building. It’s a Hotel I would love to visit again.

    Accommodation after 20 years

About 20 years ago, I first learned about Nara Hotel through a certain book. The book featured the exterior of the main building, and I was so captivated by its appearance that I dreamed of staying there someday. However, nearly 20 years passed without an opportunity. This time, to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday, we finally stayed in the main building. From the moment we entrusted our luggage to the staff's warm hospitality, we were deeply moved. The detailed explanation during check-in was also exceptional. Upon returning from a stroll outside, every staff member made us feel as comfortable as if we had returned home. The room and interior decor reflected its rich history while providing a sense of comfort that allowed us to enjoy our stay fully. We had both breakfast and dinner during our stay; each meal was absolutely delicious and left us completely satisfied. The staff's explanations for each dish were clear and thoughtful as well. Dining at the tea lounge or bar while enjoying views of the surroundings offered an extraordinary experience beyond everyday life. Having stayed at many accommodations in both Kanto and Kansai areas over the years, Nara Hotel has undoubtedly become my personal number one hotel choice! My mother was also delighted with her experience here. We look forward to staying again in the future—thank you very much!

    A Unique Experience

Having stayed at various Ryokans and Hotels over the years, I’ve experienced a wide range of prices and quality. Some exceeded expectations, some were as expected, and others fell short. Each stay feels like a new challenge to enjoy. This time, I planned a trip to Nara with the goal of staying at the iconic Nara Hotel—a dream of mine for over 40 years. Despite being exhausted from sightseeing, I woke up feeling completely refreshed—a unique experience for me. The moment I entered the room, it felt familiar and comforting in an indescribable way. The stay was worth every penny and more. As someone who eats lightly, buffets tend to suit me better; however, the restaurant’s spacious atmosphere with its high ceilings was absolutely wonderful. While buffets may not be my preference here, everything else made up for it. I’ve decided that my next trip to Nara will also include staying at Nara Hotel—it has become part of my life’s routine now. Thank you to all the staff for such an incredible experience!

    The breakfast was delicious.

Good Points: - The breakfast was delicious. - Waking up to see deer under the autumn-colored maple trees made for a refreshing morning. Points of Concern: - Some bath amenities were provided, but the lids were difficult to open for those with less strength, such as women. - Using the shower in the bathtub was challenging as there was nothing to hold onto, posing a risk of falling for elderly guests.

Total Solar Eclipse at a Classic Nara Hotel for Your Husband

Apologies for the delayed feedback as I was busy visiting the Osaka-Kansai Expo. This was my third stay at the Nara Hotel Main Building with my daughter, but it was my husband's first time, so we chose the best room. We stayed in Room 250 on the second floor, "Tenpyo." On Monday, September 8, 2025, we were able to witness a total lunar eclipse live from our room around 2:30 AM. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience. The Kasuga full-course dinner was absolutely delicious. We look forward to staying again after the hotel's renovation. Thank you in advance!
