Wonderful
This is a perfect Accommodation no matter when you visit. It was Kyoto in extreme heat, but thanks to your thoughtful care in many ways, we had a wonderful time. The pike conger is a must in this season; it is an additional-order dish, but highly recommended. We are planning to visit again in autumn.

Reflecting on Professor Kawabata on the day of the Gion Festival
I visited Hiiragiya again. I had made a Reservation for a Room with a bath and toilet, but I was first shown to a Room without them. It was still very comfortable, but when I asked to Check Reservation, I was told there had been a mistake, and you kindly arranged for me to stay in the Room associated with author Yasunari Kawabata. Thank you for your thoughtful care. Once again, I enjoyed Kyoto’s summer flavors—chilled edamame soup topped with sea urchin, pike conger sashimi, grilled tilefish with crispy scales, jellied soft-shelled turtle broth, Kamo eggplant with sesame sauce, and more—then fully enjoyed Yoiyama and fell asleep thinking of Mr. Kawabata before continuing on to the Gion Festival. Kyoto is changing little by little, but this is the beauty of Japan—and the spirit of Japanese hospitality—that I hope will be passed on to future generations.

Amazing!
Thank you for taking care of us in early July. Your refined hospitality, delicious seasonal cuisine, and the Accommodation’s sense of aesthetics felt in every detail were simply wonderful. We sincerely appreciate everything and wish you continued success.

A renowned Ryokan in Kyoto that soothes the soul, no matter how many times you visit.
I have stayed here several times when visiting Kyoto, and once again I was comforted by the same warm hospitality. The Ryokan is filled with a calm atmosphere, with the charm and dignity unique to a long-established Ryokan. The seasonal decor and beautiful garden were wonderful, allowing me to enjoy a leisurely, truly Kyoto-like stay. The staff’s natural warmth was also outstanding, and I was impressed time and again by their thoughtful attention. It never felt excessive, yet everything was perfectly taken care of—exactly what I expect from Hiiragiya. I was able to relax comfortably in my Room as well, forgetting the rush of everyday life and spending peaceful time. No matter how many times I visit, it always feels reassuring—an Accommodation that makes me feel like I’ve come home. I would love to stay again on my next trip to Kyoto. Thank you very much.

My First Stay at Hiiragiya
I was first impressed by the entrance, where water had been sprinkled and every corner had been carefully swept clean. This was my first visit, and as I was given a leisurely tour of the property, I had the opportunity to learn in detail about the history and spirit of hospitality that Hiiragiya has carried on since the Edo period, which I found truly fascinating. At that time, a beautiful Buddhist statue was displayed inside. When I asked about it, you kindly introduced me to the workshop of the Buddhist sculptor who created it. Thanks to their generosity, I was able to tour many statues and observe parts of the production process—including behind-the-scenes work areas not normally open to visitors—making it an exceptionally valuable experience. I am deeply grateful for Hiiragiya’s thoughtful arrangements. After returning to the Accommodation, I was shown to a charming bath where I could fully unwind from my travels. Dinner in the evening was also outstanding—not only in flavor, but in every detail: the tableware, presentation, and seasonal touches all reflected remarkable care and consideration. The garden at night was wrapped in an enchanting beauty, and waking up the next morning to birdsong made for an elegant and luxurious moment. It had been some time since my last visit to Kyoto, but this stay reminded me once again of its profound charm and depth—and Hiiragiya is what made my time there even more special. When visiting Kyoto again, I would love to make this my regular place to stay from now on. Thank you very much for your warm hospitality during this visit.

You’ll feel relaxed and at ease, just like coming home.
You can truly feel it from the heart. That’s because the proprietress and every member of staff are always kind, warm, and attentive—welcoming you as if you were family returning home after a long time. I’ve stayed at many accommodations, but I have never experienced hospitality at such a high level. You can sense their warmth toward people, nature, and everything around them. The facilities are an old wooden building marked by a long history—and that is exactly what makes it so wonderful. It’s deeply calming. No matter how much the surroundings may change, you can’t help but imagine that the view of the sky above the roofline and walls will remain unchanged forever. The guest rooms are also traditional Japanese-style rooms with age to them, yet they are spacious and spotless. The hanging scrolls, flowers, and furnishings are beautiful, and even the TV—somewhat out of place in such a setting—is thoughtfully hidden behind a shoji screen built into the wall. The amenities are exceptional—especially the skincare serum—which leaves your skin wonderfully moisturized and smooth. The bath—especially the private family bath with its lacquered floor—truly amazed me. It felt warm underfoot, gently gripped your soles without slipping, and was unlike anything I’d experienced before. I was also impressed that whenever you contact them (depending on coordination with other reservations), they prepare everything perfectly—not only adjusting the water temperature but even wiping away mirror fogging and every last drop of water. As for the meals: since cuisine was one of our main reasons for staying here, our expectations were very high—but we were pleasantly overwhelmed by flavors far beyond what we had imagined and by the meticulous craftsmanship in every dish. I was delighted to experience Kyoto’s pride at its finest. There is too much to list here, but what especially surprised me was how rich and delicate the sea bream soup was in both texture and depth of flavor—and how perfectly crisp yet tender the grilled eel (tube-grilled) was. No words could ever be enough. We were able to spend our precious anniversary quietly, slowly, joyfully—and happily. Thank you so very much.

A Harmony of Tradition and Modern Style
We stayed as a couple. By chance, our stay fell on my birthday, and one of the attendants kindly noticed a small conversation between us and celebrated with sekihan (red bean rice) and other treats. Thank you very much. Recently my wife hasn’t been feeling well, and we were unsure whether to go ahead with this Kyoto trip, but the calm setting seemed to be a welcome change of pace for her. We ended up arriving at the Accommodation earlier than planned, but you still allowed us to check in and enter our Room. It also helped that you patiently waited while my wife took some time to decide on the dining location and breakfast. We didn’t even have time to take photos of the Accommodation, but at the end an attendant spoke to us and took a commemorative photo, which added another wonderful memory to our trip. The Room felt like it was built in the Showa era, letting me enjoy an atmosphere reminiscent of my childhood (including the bath), though key areas have been updated in a modern style. All of the meals were delicious; personally, I especially enjoyed aburame (deep-fried tofu), abalone, and eggplant—so much so that I drank more sake than usual and ate a bit too much rice. What we heard from the attendant about recent conditions in Kyoto (such as inbound tourism) matched what we experienced on this trip as well, which was very interesting. The only thing I wondered about was whether drinks in the refrigerator are included. That may suit guests who drink a lot, but for older guests like us it was simply too much. We felt it would also be good to have an option or settle based on what was actually consumed. Even with modern updates throughout, we were able to relax at ease in an old-fashioned atmosphere. It also seemed good for my wife’s health. Thank you very much.

Full of Kyoto Experience
On the day, we had lunch at a sushi restaurant near Bukko-ji Temple, then walked to Hiiragiya. We enjoyed a bowl of thin tea, visited the Kyoto Museum of Culture, and admired ukiyo-e prints. I think the difference between a top-class Ryokan and the next tier up is slight. But that slight difference becomes a big one in terms of the hospitality you receive as a guest. For example, at Hiiragiya, they serve drinks suited to each moment: cold tea when you return from going out in the heat; warm tea after an evening stroll; cold tea after using the private bath—offering sencha, hojicha, ginger tea, and more depending on the situation. They pay close attention not only to how delicious the food is but also to every detail—from trays and bowls to ceramics—and each dish is beautifully presented. What impressed me most this time was an ayu plate featuring a Genji-ko motif—an understated touch that felt distinctly Kyoto. On our way back, our attendant kindly told us about high-quality supermarkets in Kyoto, which we visited. There were excellent Kyoto vegetables, and fish such as shiroguchi and hamo prepared with bone-cutting—again, so very Kyoto. Although Hiiragiya is highly prestigious, it feels remarkably relaxed and comfortable—perhaps because they take care not to make you feel that formality. Talking with everyone on staff—from the Okami onward—is both enjoyable and educational. Thank you for everything.

Feel at Home
There was an issue with the Room we had originally reserved, so we were upgraded to Room 52 in the new wing. It was a beautifully appointed Room, thoughtfully explained by the proprietress during her greeting, featuring generous use of straight-grain wood. Soft sunlight filtering through shoji screens, fresh greenery in the small courtyard garden, and the quiet presence of a stone lantern brought a sense of calm. The attendant’s gentle and gracious service was also very pleasant, and we felt warmly welcomed. At dinner, we enjoyed meticulously prepared kaiseki cuisine—such as abalone and salt-grilled ayu—served on tasteful tableware. Before dinner, we relaxed in the library with beer and tea while reading, and time passed at an unhurried pace. The proprietress and staff shared information seamlessly and provided attentive hospitality—truly what you would expect from a long-established Accommodation. The next day was Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Festival). Iris leaves displayed under the eaves conveyed seasonal tradition and added to the distinctive Kyoto atmosphere. True to the phrase “Raisha Nyo Ki”—welcoming guests as if they were returning home—it was an Accommodation that made us want to come back again.

Thank you for your wonderful hospitality.
I stayed here several times before on my son’s recommendation, and I always had a very pleasant stay. This time was my first visit in a while, but the service was just as wonderful as before, and I felt very comfortable throughout. In particular, both dinner and breakfast were elegantly prepared, delicious across the board, and extremely satisfying. Thank you very much for your hospitality.\nI would definitely like to stay again.

The best in the world
Guests from overseas stayed at our Accommodation. Though they are seasoned travelers, they were so impressed that they called it “the best Accommodation we’ve ever stayed in,” and liked it so much that they canceled their next stop to extend their stay for a Multiple Night Stay. We truly appreciate your kind support and willingness to accommodate even difficult requests.

We fully enjoyed the unique charm of Kyoto!
We usually stay at Hotels these days, but my husband and I wanted to experience something more Kyoto-like, so we chose this Ryokan. As expected of a long-established, top-class Accommodation. The hospitality from the proprietress, the senior proprietress, and the attendants was outstanding, and I’m truly glad we stayed here. The staff’s thoughtful attention to detail made our time very comfortable. It was also cherry blossom season, so everything was wonderful, and we would love to visit again in a different season as well. There were many international guests staying too, and I’m sure they were very satisfied with this uniquely Japanese hospitality. We will be back again. Thank you very much.

The Long-Awaited Hiiragiya
I stayed on the Solo Travel Plan. The Room had a charming atmosphere. Because of its age, the Room was not quite comfortable, but they kindly showed me other Rooms as well, so next time I would like to stay in the new wing. The food was wonderful. I was impressed by how thoroughly the natural flavors of the ingredients were brought out. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Savor a new kaiseki experience at a charming Kyoto accommodation.
I finally had the chance to stay at Hiiragiya, a place I had long wanted to visit. I enjoyed admiring the charming, traditional Kyoto-style Japanese house while also savoring kaiseki cuisine that felt fresh and modern in every detail. In particular, the sea cucumber with konowata and yuzu, salt-grilled grouper, beef with orange Chinese cabbage, and tilefish steamed with turnip were all delicious and beautifully presented. It is a form of Japanese beauty that I hope will be carefully preserved for generations to come.

The Hiiragiya You’ve Been Dreaming Of
Hiiragiya, proud of its history and tradition Although it is in the heart of the city, I could truly feel the tradition. Since it was the new wing, it was comfortable and easy to stay in. Everything was excellent—from the service and meals to the bath. However, the restaurant dining area was not partitioned, so it felt like we were eating right next to the neighboring table. In particular, some noisy female guests made everything feel disappointing.

“Guests feel at home...
“Guests feel at home.” These four characters say it all. Despite being one of Japan’s most prestigious Accommodations, the moment you step inside you feel a comforting sense of having come home. There are many newer Accommodations with more advanced facilities. You can always improve the physical aspects if you spend enough money. But a true sense of ease cannot be created by money alone. The proprietress, the attendants, and staff across reception and every department all carry the weight of history while keeping those four characters in mind—doing what should be done, when it should be done, as it should be done. I believe their awareness and commitment are exceptionally high. It sounds simple, but it is the hardest thing to achieve. Thanks to that, time seems to pass gently here, and a calmness settles into the space itself. That is why it never feels intimidating or unapproachable. The cuisine is on par with Kyoto’s renowned top-tier restaurants, and some of the tableware was even the same as that used at a certain three-Michelin-star establishment in Kyoto. Whether it was the dishes, the wooden tub in the private bath, or even the utensils for morning yudofu (tofu hot pot), they would kindly tell us about them when asked—yet never show off; that restraint is part of their elegance. I hesitate to use the word “perfect,” but based on my stays at so-called world-class places around the globe and in Japan as well, I believe this is an Accommodation that comes closest to perfection. To the proprietress and all staff: please continue weaving your history with pride for years to come. Thank you very much.

Too wonderful to put into words...
I visited on February 1 for the second time, my first visit in six years. Once again, I stayed as a solo female traveler. My first stay was wonderful, and this long-awaited return after six years was something I had been looking forward to more than I can say. From the moment you step through the entrance, you feel the season and the presence of a long-established Ryokan. And yet, somehow it’s deeply comforting… that warm feeling when you’re told “Welcome back”… it’s something you can only experience at Hiiragiya Ryokan. This time, I was looked after by an excellent young woman who clearly took great pride in Hiiragiya Ryokan. She kindly explained the new exhibition room and lounge before escorting me to Room No. 22 in the main building, where I stayed last time as well. The folding screen with cranes is stunning, and the cozy tatami Room is beautiful. It’s a wonderful Room with a view of a small courtyard garden. It was fun spotting the Hiiragiya crest on various furnishings—just being in the Room made me excited. The proprietress also came to greet me; I was truly happy to be able to speak with her. The Room did not have an en-suite toilet or bath, but it wasn’t inconvenient at all. Having a bath prepared for you at your preferred time is pure luxury… The stained-glass bath and lacquered flooring were beautiful—I enjoyed it three times! And then there was the meal I had been waiting for… I’m frustrated that I don’t have enough words to do it justice. Everything from the first course was outstanding: shellfish and other seafood, yuba (tofu skin), urui (hosta shoots). The egg-yolk vinegar sauce was delicious as well. The turnip dumpling (so fluffy), sashimi featuring fugu and rare cuts of tuna—what a treat. Miso-marinated Spanish mackerel and pressed duck were also exceptional. Eel sushi as an exquisite palate cleanser, then rice with shirauo (icefish) simmered egg-style… It was so good that I fell silent. For drinks, I started with local craft beer and moved on to a sake tasting set! They mentioned it leaned toward sweeter styles including local labels—but they paired perfectly with the food. The tableware was lovely too—I couldn’t contain my excitement. My attendant’s explanations were excellent, and I had such an enjoyable time throughout. After bathing, I went to the exhibition space and lounge again. Relaxing there with a book before returning to my Room where my futon had been prepared—I slept like a log. In the morning: straight back to the bath—an incredible start. Walking through those truly quiet corridors back to my Room… Even this time and space has value in itself—the stillness makes you forget you’re in central Kyoto. Breakfast… I chose Japanese-style. First of all, the rolled omelet was unbelievably delicious. The dashi broth was superb. Yudofu (simmered tofu)… gentle flavors that let you taste how good soybeans can be. Flounder kombu-jime topped with ume plum and dashi soy sauce—I've never had flounder this delicious. Even a simple ohitashi showed the care and time put into the finest dashi, and I felt genuinely moved as a Japanese person. Of course, I finished everything… I also heard they may offer lunch in the future—if so, I would love to visit again! I packed to leave with real reluctance, realizing just how deeply refreshed I felt. Truly the best Accommodation!

This was our second ...
This was our second stay, and just like last time, the meals were truly outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed each seasonal dish from the bottom of our hearts. The presentation and tableware were also beautiful, making the cuisine a delight for the eyes as well. The interior has a calm atmosphere and an elegant, Kyoto-style feel that makes the stay itself feel like something special. The service was also extremely attentive, allowing us to spend a very comfortable time. With consistently high quality that gives real peace of mind, this is an Accommodation we would definitely like to return to.

Because of our long-standing tradition
As a traditional Ryokan, some aspects might feel a bit inconvenient due to its unchanged old-fashioned style, but that's exactly what attracts those seeking this experience. The meals were surprising—Kyoto cuisine is so delicately flavored! Even the soba dipping sauce was almost tasteless, perhaps meant to highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients. There’s none of the extravagance seen in trendy Ryokans, making it an authentically Kyoto-style stay.

I was deeply impressed by the exceptional hospitality.
We had the pleasure of using the renowned Kyoto Ryokan, Hiiragiya, for our grandchild's special "Okuizome" ceremony. From the initial planning stages, the proprietress and staff provided exceptionally attentive service, and on the day itself, their thoughtful hospitality left us deeply moved. They warmly supported us during the Okuizome ritual, allowing our family to enjoy this significant moment in peace and comfort. The dishes prepared by the head chef were exquisite—each one beautifully presented and full of rich flavors, perfectly suited for such a celebratory occasion. The quality of ingredients and heartfelt preparation truly shone through. Additionally, an unexpected appearance of a rare-label Yebisu beer called "Lucky Ebisu" during our meal brought an extra touch of joy to our gathering—a delightful surprise that became an unforgettable memory. Hiiragiya seamlessly blends tradition with personalized hospitality that caters to each guest’s needs. It is undoubtedly a Ryokan we would love to visit again for life’s milestones or special celebrations.

A relaxing accommodation blending tradition and modernity
I visited Hiiragiya, a prestigious and historic Ryokan, with some nervousness, but I was able to relax just as the words "Visitors Feel at Home" displayed at the entrance suggested. During the initial tour of the facility, I was shown shared facilities such as the Fuji Room Library and a private stained-glass bath, as well as historically significant rooms associated with famous figures like Yasunari Kawabata and Yukio Mishima. The craftsmanship, design, and views from these rooms were all stunningly beautiful and deeply reflective of Japanese tradition. The room I stayed in was a small tea-room-style space with a courtyard garden in Sukiya-zukuri architecture. While I initially worried it might feel underwhelming after seeing such remarkable rooms during the tour, this concern quickly disappeared. Each room has its own unique charm due to its individual design. The room showcased meticulous craftsmanship and playful creativity: part of the ceiling featured woven bamboo patterns; various types of wood were used around the alcove; even insect trails on wooden panels in the washroom created distinctive patterns. Before sleeping, when only bedside lighting illuminated my surroundings, shadows cast on the woven bamboo ceiling added depth and elegance to its appearance. At first glance, I thought that one sliding door's pattern resembled pumpkins—but it turned out to be "Paulownia Crest," historically used by powerful figures and now Japan's government emblem! Even small details like bamboo-shaped handles reflected thoughtful design choices explained by knowledgeable staff members. While many intricate details may not be immediately noticeable upon entering such artisan-crafted spaces—taking time allows one’s appreciation for their depth to grow further over time through observation alone! This same sense permeated throughout—from attentive staff providing excellent service down-to-seasonal cuisine embodying similar care & refinement. Hiiragiya not only preserves tradition but also embraces innovation thoughtfully aligned toward future legacies—evident within their newly constructed wing featuring lacquered floors adorned using jewel beetle wings alongside modern amenities seamlessly blending sophistication into bright yet serene Japanese aesthetics rooted firmly atop heritage foundations themselves inspiring admiration alike! Nearby Kyoto Cultural Museum housed inside beautifully preserved Western-style architecture (former Bank Of Japan Kyoto Branch) introduced me towards historical insights post-Meiji Restoration era wherein discussions revolved around defining Kyoto’s evolving identity amidst changing times leading onto embracing progressive endeavors shaping today’s landscape inclusive amongst traditional temples/shrines juxtaposed against striking steel-framed Kyoto Station itself symbolizing forward-thinking spirit alive still resonating deeply reflecting upon what constitutes “newness” personally too!

We were lucky to see an impressive Buddha statue exhibition.
The architecture, with its high cultural value, is beautifully polished and well-maintained despite its age, and the interior is truly stunning. Staying in the old building was a wonderful experience. I was lucky to see the works of Master Sculptor Shorin Matsuhisa up close during an exhibition that happened to be held. The hospitality was incredibly kind and attentive. From start to finish, every detail was carefully considered, such as frequently replacing the water in our room. The personalized service made me feel this is true traditional Japanese Ryokan hospitality. However, during the meal explanation, it seemed that only the Primary Guest received most of the attention while explanations and eye contact with the other guest were somewhat neglected; this caught my attention a little bit. The meals were absolutely delicious! Both dinner and breakfast featured delicate flavors showcasing Kyoto's signature dashi broth—truly exquisite cuisine. Thank you for your care!

For my father's birthday
My father, who has lived in Kyoto for a long time, mentioned wanting to stay here once, so my brother and I stayed with him for his 92nd birthday. The main building dates back to the Edo period and has been expanded over time. While its history is evident, it is impeccably maintained, which was truly impressive. My father has difficulty walking, but the accommodation had an elevator as well as thoughtful arrangements like beds and chairs that ensured a comfortable stay. For his birthday, the room was specially decorated with calligraphy and sliding doors, and the hostess personally greeted us with a gift, which deeply moved my father. The room's bath was spacious and relaxing. During meals and other times of need, the staff provided exceptional care with great attention to detail. The meals were also excellent. I hope to visit again someday with my spouse for another special occasion.

It was "Hiiragiya Ryokan," a place I had always wanted to visit at least once in my lifetime. It was truly wonderful. I was overwhelmed by the weight of its history. And the hospitality—the meals, the thoughtfulness, the decor, and even the perfect distance maintained by the staff—made me realize what true excellence is. The Best Traditional Ryokan
A traditional Ryokan at its finest. It was a truly memorable experience. The moment you step into the entrance, it feels like another world with a serene and refined atmosphere. Just as the framed calligraphy "Raisha Nyoki" suggests, it was a natural and fulfilling time. From the summer decorations, uniquely designed baths, library, courtyard garden, to even the electric curtain equipment—everything was thoughtfully arranged. The Kyoto-style Kaiseki cuisine featured abalone, sweetfish, and pike conger dishes in succession—each one an exquisite delight. The dishware adorned with holly motifs added charm and joy to the meal. The lingering fragrance on the bookmark we received as a parting gift was enchanting—I can't wait to return again!

Luxurious Space
We enjoyed an extraordinary and luxurious time that felt almost beyond our means. Since all of us are adults and unsure when we might travel together again, we ambitiously planned a very tight schedule. However, after such a hectic journey, we were able to relax in a calm and serene space. It was my first time trying grilled salt-seasoned pike conger, and I was delighted to enjoy this seasonal Kyoto specialty that can only be savored at this time of year. Additionally, the thoughtful gesture of providing frozen water bottles and towels at checkout was greatly appreciated.
