    The hospitality, garden, and meals—everything was wonderful.

    The hospitality from the doorman, front desk, and restaurant staff was wonderful—you could really feel their genuine warmth beyond any script. The property and guest rooms were carefully maintained, creating a truly relaxing atmosphere. We were blessed with perfect weather and enjoyed a cloudless view of Mt. Fuji, and the open-air bath with cherry blossoms was simply the best. I had read about this place in a novel and had wanted to stay here once; it exceeded my expectations—thank you from the bottom of my heart!

    Classic

    I wanted to relax at Lake Ashi for the first time in a while, so after doing some research, I decided to visit Yama no Hotel, which perfectly matched my recent theme (classical style). I chose a Room with an Onsen bath available at any time and booked a plan with breakfast and dinner, planning to stay in and unwind. Since it was early spring, the weather and the garden flowers were still a bit uncertain, but walks around Lake Ashi felt refreshing, and I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the ample hot water in my Room. A friend who knows Hakone well had told me the food was excellent, so I looked forward to the French dinner. It had been a while since I’d seen so much cutlery laid out for a proper course meal, so I felt slightly intimidated at first, but everything from the amuse-bouche to dessert was delicious. It’s a wonderful setting, and I’d be happy if I have another chance to return. The Hotel seems to offer multilingual support online, and the historical exhibits were thoughtfully presented; having simple English explanations on-site would make it even better.

    A refined, long-established establishment

    This was my first stay. As expected of a long-established Hotel, the service and meals were flawless. Before check-in, I had a beer in the lounge—the foam and temperature were both perfect. While gazing at Lake Ashi, I ended up having two glasses. One male staff member in charge of the dining venue moved with true professional efficiency and provided outstanding service, which left a strong impression on me. Of course, just as the Reviews said, the food was completely satisfying in both presentation and taste. The Diamond benefit champagne was also delicious. The Room was simple and easy to use, and I had a very comfortable stay. I also really appreciated being assigned a Room close to the large public bath. If I had to mention anything, the window glass in the Room was extremely dirty—I felt it really should be cleaned (though it may be difficult due to staffing shortages). Also, while I appreciated having unlimited towels at the large public bath, they felt somewhat worn—almost like sandpaper… At least for the Room towels, I thought replacing them might be a good idea. There were areas I’d like to see improved, but it was an Accommodation that still made me want to return. I’m sure staying during azalea season would be even more wonderful. Thank you very much for taking such good care of me.

    About Dinner

    I stayed with the Sukiyaki set meal plan, but I was disappointed because a single instruction sheet was left on the table and I was told, “Please refer to that and do it yourself,” before the staff left. It felt a bit unfriendly. I think guests would be more satisfied if it were explained to them.

    Recommended in winter as well.

    Nestled on the shores of Lake Ashi, this Hotel is well known for its spring azaleas and autumn foliage, but it is truly an Accommodation we recommend visiting in winter. With fewer tourists during this season, you can fully enjoy peaceful moments surrounded by the lake and mountains. The interior has a classic, calming atmosphere. Spending time relaxing in a warm Room while gazing out at the winter scenery beyond the window is a true luxury.

    An Elegant Classic Hotel

    I stayed at the end of January. It’s in a perfect location for enjoying the views of Lake Ashi. The service was just right, and I was able to fully enjoy my time at the Hotel. I had a Japanese dinner and a Western-style breakfast. The seating was spaciously arranged, and in addition to the view, I enjoyed delicious meals. Although it was a very cold season, the inside of the building was warm and comfortable. The large public bath was stylish and clean, but I did notice that the ventilation was strong and the washing area felt a bit cold (and having to bring towels from the Room… understandable as a cost-saving measure). Other than that, it was an extremely satisfying stay. Thank you very much.

    We stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

    I stayed for one night for the first time in 4–5 years. At check-in, they asked whether anything had changed since my previous stay. It was a small thing, but it made me very happy. I was also impressed by the warm smiles of all the staff. Especially during meals, one of the overseas staff members worked so hard, and their sincerity came through—it made for a wonderful time. With more inbound visitors to Japan these days, seeing someone working here not just as a guest but to experience Japanese culture made me genuinely happy and, for some reason, proud as well. Of course, the food was delicious too. It was a memorable and enjoyable stay in many ways. Thank you very much. I will visit again.

    A wonderful Hotel where you can truly relax

    The calm atmosphere, the view, and the Room were all very relaxing. The staff were polite and kind, and we had a very pleasant two-day stay. One small disappointment was that the view of Mt. Fuji from the Hotel observatory was wonderful, but I noticed the windows were a little dirty. Other than that, both the bath and meals were excellent. I would like to visit again during azalea season. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    A Relaxing Accommodation

    The lounge has high ceilings, and with a fire burning in the fireplace, you can relax and enjoy a leisurely time. You can stroll through the spacious garden, so you can spend the day without getting bored during your stay without having to go out of your way to go anywhere. Another appeal is that many guests are calm and it never feels noisy or crowded. On clear days, you can view Mt. Fuji from the lounge, your Room, or the garden, which feels wonderfully refreshing. No matter what season you visit, you’ll head home with great memories—this is my favorite Accommodation. Even if you arrive by train, it’s very convenient because the Shuttle Service runs frequently back and forth. I would definitely like to stay again. Thank you in advance.

    Admire Mt. Fuji’s snow-covered scenery.

    Staying at this mountain Hotel is incredibly relaxing. The views of Lake Ashi from the garden and your Room are truly soothing. On the morning after light snow fell, we were greeted by Mount Fuji glowing in the sunrise.

    Revenge accomplished successfully.

    This was my second visit. Last time, in May of last year during the azalea season, I stayed in a quad room with an Onsen on the 4th floor. However, heavy fog and wind-driven rain prevented me from strolling through the garden; even the azaleas seen from the room were shrouded in mist, and I couldn’t even confirm the presence of Lake Ashi. This time, as a do-over, I stayed in a Premium Twin on the same floor as before. Fortunately, we had great weather and I was able to fully enjoy the stunning views of Lake Ashi and the moon road reflected on its surface. For dining, I chose Japanese (kaiseki) last time and French this time—both were so delicious that it’s easy to understand why this Hotel is so highly regarded. Personally, I recommend the French over Japanese cuisine. My do-over after last time’s bad weather was a success, but I was so captivated by this room’s Onsen, views, and French dining that I’d like to return again—either for another try at azalea viewing or during the autumn foliage season.

    The hotel had a clas...

    The hotel had a classical and beautiful interior. Although my stay was during the Christmas season, the café below the lobby had a lit fireplace and a large Christmas tree, creating a wonderful atmosphere. The staff were welcoming with warm smiles and provided excellent service, which truly reflected the prestige of this long-established hotel. While I often stayed in Gora or Yumoto when visiting Hakone, staying by Lake Ashi offered great views, and I enjoyed strolling around Hakone Shrine and the hotel's spacious garden. It was such a lovely hotel that I would love to visit again.

    A very quiet Hotel

    Overall, it was excellent. My mother, who accompanied me, was very pleased, and I truly felt it was a great decision to stay at the mountain accommodation. The meals were via room service, and everything was delicious. The weather was great, and we could see Mount Fuji from the balcony, which made us very satisfied. The staff provided service with smiles and were polite, making us feel at ease. However, one small issue: the website and accommodation blog mentioned that separate pajamas would be available at the amenity bar, but they were not there. That said, there is no doubt this is a wonderful hotel. If I visit Hakone again in the future, I will definitely choose to stay here!

    It was excellent.

    This was my first repeat visit in 5 and a half years. Last time, I came by rental car, but this time I opted for trains and buses due to concerns about icy roads. At check-in, the staff member was very attentive and even called a nearby café to check availability for me—excellent service. After checking in, I enjoyed dessert and tea at "Salon de Thé Rosage," which was about to close for the winter season. Although the strong winds caused the sightseeing boat to be canceled, I fully appreciated the lakeside scenery. For dinner, I chose not to have a full course meal thinking it would be lighter; however, it included a hearty steak as well as dessert—both delicious and satisfying in portion size. As an IKYU Diamond Member, I received one complimentary drink—a nice perk! From my clean Room, I could see the Hotel's beautiful garden along with Lake Ashi and even Mount Fuji beyond—it was stunning. The bath facilities were also spotless; despite it being a long weekend holiday period, I could enjoy multiple relaxing baths without any issues. I chose Western-style breakfast in the morning—it had great service and taste that allowed me to enjoy it leisurely. With checkout at noon and Hakone Shrine within walking distance for early morning visits even without a car, this Hotel is highly recommended for those who want a relaxing stay. Thank you very much—I look forward to staying here again!

    Croissant for Breakfast

    The view was amazing, the Onsen was great, and we had a wonderful time enjoying the delicious dinner. However, it was disappointing that the croissants were not good. In the past, I revisited this Hotel looking forward to their breakfast, but this time the fluffiness, buttery aroma, and taste were completely different. Simplification through small adjustments may be a current trend, but this breakfast was disappointing.

    This was my first stay at the accommodation. I had a relaxing time and was able to return the Hakone Shrine amulet on foot. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely satisfying in terms of taste and service. I accidentally left something behind, but when I contacted the staff in a hurry, they responded kindly, for which I am very grateful. Thank you very much. I look forward to visiting again for another stay.

    We expect our staff to go above and beyond.

    - Location, facility, and atmosphere are excellent. - The corner room with 4 beds and an open-air bath is wonderful, but it would be better if there were an additional toilet and sink in the room. - Disappointed by the unskilled reception staff member from China. It significantly diminished my expectations for a prestigious hotel. - I don't understand what the staff are afraid of, but they should directly and repeatedly remind foreign guests about manners and rules within the hotel. Foreign guests do not seem to notice or follow written notices or posters. To maintain the hotel's order, quality, tradition, prestige, and to respect affluent Japanese guests around them, I strongly request more detailed attention in this regard. - The quality and quantity of ingredients served at the restaurant seem to have declined compared to before. Dinner was French cuisine; although it included filet meat, it was tough with small portions that left me unsatisfied. Drinks were excessively overpriced as well. For breakfast, I chose Japanese cuisine but found almost no use of local or nearby ingredients; portions were small which left me very disappointed early in the morning. Please incorporate more local vegetables, fish, meat, tofu dishes abundantly—I want to enjoy eating more! (Chef & General Manager: please take note!!) It makes me anxious wondering if this mountain hotel has fallen so far that they can no longer source such ingredients? - Experienced reception staff or restaurant managers should directly ask for guest feedback during checkout or payment processes.

    The reserved room was not satisfactory.

    This was my second stay, and during the first visit, I was unexpectedly assigned Room 423 with a stunning view of Mt. Fuji. Since I had booked a Deluxe Room again this time, I assumed it would be the same. However, I was given Room 401, which does not have a view of Mt. Fuji, leaving me quite surprised. After discussing with the front desk and learning that Room 423 was available, I paid an additional fee to switch rooms immediately and resolved the issue. While I trusted IKYU.com for my bookings, this experience left me disappointed.

    As always, I had a very comfortable stay.

    It was unfortunate that there were no towels available in the large public bath, but the Room, service, and meals were as excellent as always. This time, I was also able to charge my BEV, which was very convenient. While waiting for our Room to be ready, we enjoyed an affogato and cake set in the lounge. However, there was chocolate (possibly gâteau au chocolat?) hidden under the ice cream of the affogato, which my wife with a chocolate allergy could not eat. Of course, this was entirely due to our lack of confirmation beforehand and not an issue with the Hotel at all; however, it did dampen our experience slightly.

    Dinner was disappointing, but the apple pie was a delightful moment.

    After six years, we returned to this Hotel. Last time, we had Japanese cuisine for dinner, so this time we opted for French. The course meal was traditional and classic, fitting for a historic Hotel. However, as I am not fond of duck dishes served as the main course, I paid an additional fee to change it to "Grilled Sagami Beef Tenderloin (80g)." Unfortunately, the meat was slightly dry and disappointing. Even if the portion is small, I would expect carefully selected ingredients befitting a prestigious Hotel. Additionally, the male staff member who served the meat dish seemed new that day and only said "This is tenderloin" without any further explanation. This left an odd impression compared to the courteous service from other staff members earlier. The next morning at Rosage in the annex building, I enjoyed their much-anticipated apple pie. A friendly female staff member decorated it with colorful sauces in shapes of roses and leaves. It was such a delightful moment that we even asked her for a commemorative photo. In the end, what truly defines a Hotel is its "people."

    Every visit brings a sense of relaxation and comfort.

    I travel about once a month. Hakone is my most frequent destination, and among the accommodations there, I often stay at the Hotel de Yama. My favorite part is breakfast at the restaurant, where I can relax on the terrace depending on the season and occasionally enjoy a view of Mt. Fuji, which is truly fulfilling. The staff's hospitality is always excellent, making my stay very pleasant. As I am in my later years, I'm not sure how long I'll be able to visit, but it’s a place I want to return to as much as possible.

    Hakone Refugees, Ended

    My favorite Highland Hotel has been closed for renovations for half a year. After exploring various options, I think I've found my place here. The Room, the bath, the food, the perfect balance of freedom, the lovely fireplace and garden—all were wonderful. Gazing at the changing colors of the mountains and Lake Ashi over time, along with the vast sky, was incredibly peaceful. While the building is old in some ways, it’s neither dirty nor unsafe—it carries a sense of history. Even details like the clean accordion screen doors showed great care in maintenance. I’ll find time to visit again soon. Thank you very much!

    The hospitality was excellent.

    There is a direct bus from Busta, making access very convenient, and the Room was very clean and comfortable to stay in! The amenities were minimal, so if you have specific preferences for items like shampoo or lotion, it might be better to bring your own. The spa services available in the facility were excellent, with both skilled treatments and attentive customer service. It truly helped relieve the fatigue from traveling and daily work. They also kindly provided advice on the day's sightseeing route, making it a truly wonderful day!

    I had a wonderful time with my mother.

    I made a last-minute Reservation to visit Hakone Shrine with my mother at the end of the year. The Room, Onsen, and meals were all excellent. Especially at the Japanese restaurant, a staff member from Thailand provided service in fluent and polite Japanese, making it a very enjoyable experience. I would love to visit again! Completely satisfied.

    Weekday Solo Trip

    I stayed at the accommodation at the end of November. It was my first time in Hakone, and I was blessed with clear skies, making my stay full of wonderful memories within the hotel. The staff's service was excellent, and I truly felt their attentiveness throughout my stay. The onsen inside the hotel offered both indoor and outdoor options, and with just the right water temperature, I found myself soaking for quite a long time without realizing it. This time, I chose a plan where both breakfast and dinner were served in the room. The dinner especially left an impression with its generous portions and exceptional taste. Although I noticed a small amount of dust in the room that caught my attention, overall, I was very satisfied with my experience. I would love to visit again during a different season!
