    A Relaxing Hotel

The view from the Room, the garden that never gets old to stroll through, the Onsen bath that’s neither too big nor too small, delicious meals, a calm lounge, and attentive hospitality from the front desk to the housekeeping staff… It was so comfortable that I changed my stay to a Multiple Night Stay at short notice. When I asked at the front desk whether I could keep using the same Room, I was told no—but they contacted me before checkout the next morning and arranged it so I could stay in the same Room after all. I really appreciated their thoughtfulness! Even while waiting to meet a friend in the lobby, staff spoke to me kindly and I had a great time. Most guests were quiet and respectful as well, so I could relax. The garden is beautifully maintained and makes for an enjoyable walk. In summer it’s inevitably hot and there are more insects—but that also means you can truly enjoy nature. The Onsen afterward felt wonderful! This is a Hotel that made me think, “If only I had time for one more night!” I will definitely return! One suggestion for next time: some overseas guests wore slippers into the changing area or entered the bath without washing first. Since the men’s and women’s baths are on different floors, some people also seemed to get lost. It’s ultimately up to guests, but adding a little more guidance (such as simple diagrams) might be helpful.

    Everything is stable.

It’s not extravagantly luxurious, but it’s classically lovely.

I didn’t receive the Diamond member benefits.

The welcome and greeting were outstanding. I’d always been drawn to newer properties and hadn’t had the chance to stay at this mountain Hotel, but I’m glad I did. The hot spring water quality was excellent—if I had to say one thing, a cold plunge bath would have made it perfect. We chose a Plan with in-room dining, and the Japanese bento-style meal was very enjoyable. One disappointing point was that when we made our Reservation via IKYU, it seemed our comments had not been read in advance by the front desk staff, and although Diamond member benefits were listed, nothing was provided. It felt awkward to bring up the Diamond member benefits ourselves, so we didn’t mention it. Access to Hakone Shrine and Lake Ashi was convenient, and our family agreed we’d love to come again—but that one point was disappointing. I hope this will be improved.

Summer Vacation Trip with the Kids

We stayed in the largest Room. Even the bath in the Room had a view of Lake Ashi. For dinner, our second son wanted Western food, so we chose French cuisine. It was delicious!! He especially liked the bread. The women’s bath was amazing too, with an open-air bath and a mist sauna!! We happened to stay on a day when there were fireworks. We went to watch from a spot where you can see them from the observation deck and the bridge below. They looked absolutely beautiful! In the evening, the lounge becomes a free lounge where you can enjoy drinks and snacks! At check-in, we also booked in-Room massages for all four of us!! I fell asleep halfway through. For breakfast, we chose Japanese cuisine. The grilled fish was horse mackerel and it was delicious!! It’s a Hotel I’d love to stay at again when visiting Hakone.

    About the restaurant and services

Service: About half of the waiters and waitresses are foreign, and explanations of the dishes are insufficient. Their responses also tend to be a beat off, so it’s hard to enjoy a relaxed meal. Even with the Japanese breakfast, tea doesn’t come out for quite a while after being seated. Breakfast: The Japanese set is decent. The Western options—such as the buffet—are limited to the point where you wonder “Is this all?”, and even the selectable main dishes and plating are not at a level you would expect from a first-class Hotel. Frankly, it was disappointing! The bathroom towels aren’t crisp either—more like they’ve been machine-washed, tumble-dried, and folded. The selection of amenities is also insufficient. Front desk and welcome service were good. Overall, it feels like cost-cutting has taken priority and has undermined the reputation of what is supposed to be a first-class Hotel. I’ve stayed here several times before, but this is the first time I’ve been this disappointed.

A Hotel with a great atmosphere.

I had been interested in this Hotel for some time but hadn’t had the chance to visit, so I stayed this time with high expectations. The Room and Facility have been nicely renovated while preserving a retro atmosphere, creating a chic and comfortable setting. Also, since my Room was close to the route to the large public bath, it felt like an excellent location. I was also very happy with the ice cream after bathing. For dinner, I chose the upgraded course and was satisfied with the content (the dessert was especially delicious), but I felt there was a bit of a gap before the main dish (meat) arrived after finishing the fish course. For breakfast, I had the Western-style half buffet and enjoyed everything very much, including the salted bread rolls. There was a mini concert in the lounge after dinner, which I really enjoyed. Overall, I felt the service was good. I would like to stay again in a different season.

I’d love to stay here again.

I’ve been to Hakone a few times, but I’d always wondered what was so special about it. This time, I realized that going to Lake Ashi and staying at this Hotel is what “Hakone” really means. It was truly wonderful. The view from the Room was spectacular! You can take in the garden, Lake Ashi, and the mountains all at once (it was seriously cloudy this time so we couldn’t see Mt. Fuji), and I enjoyed a luxurious, relaxing time watching the sightseeing boats glide by. The Room was spacious and beautiful. It’s a classic Hotel, but it seems like the interior and bathrooms have been updated—everything was very clean. The bed and sheets were amazing! If I had to mention one minor issue, the windows were a bit dirty—but expecting them to be cleaned every day would be unrealistic. Being up in the mountains with lots of trees also means insects will show up sometimes, so it can’t be helped. The Onsen was incredible too! First of all, it was spotless—everywhere—and you could really tell how thoroughly everything is cleaned. The view from the open-air bath (mountains and river) was lovely and felt amazing. Just thinking back on it now makes me sigh happily. The inside of the building was also clean and well maintained—it felt like time moved more slowly there. All of the complimentary services (ice cream, evening snacks and soft drinks) were great (the chocolate was delicious), and even the drinks in the Room were excellent—there’s nothing else to say but “as expected.” This time I stayed on a great-value weekday Plan, and honestly I felt almost guilty—like, is this price really okay? Access to sightseeing spots is convenient too, and buses stop right in front of the Hotel! They really think of everything. For meals I chose a Plan where food is delivered to your Room, but part of me still wanted to eat at the restaurant even as a solo guest! Next time I’d love to dine at their wonderful restaurant. Having meals brought up by staff did feel special though—and it was fun above all else. The portion size being on the smaller side also suited me well (but next time I want to try the restaurant!). If you enjoy alcohol, having a drink in the lounge also sounds nice. The other guests were calm and respectful as well, which made my stay very comfortable. A little luxury like this once in a while is great—I definitely want to come back. Above all else it was so quiet; it felt like time had stopped. Absolutely perfect.

    The service is excellent.

It wasn’t the season for azaleas, but the garden was well maintained and the hydrangeas were just starting to bloom, which was lovely. When I checked out, it started to rain. I hesitated to take out my folding umbrella since it was only a short walk to the bus, but a staff member kindly lent me an umbrella and helped load my luggage. Even with many international guests, their English and Chinese support was smooth and professional, and the service stood out in every situation. The food was delicious as well, but I rated it 4 because the dinner presentation and breakfast flavors were a bit strong for my taste. Overall, I’m very satisfied.

    We had a relaxing stay.

After the azalea season had ended, we were able to relax and take our time. The course dinner was just the right menu and portion size for seniors. In particular, the combination of chocolate cake and lemon sherbet for dessert was delicious. We heard the pastry chef is 20 years old, so we look forward to what’s to come. The calm, long-established hospitality was very comfortable.

    It was a wonderful trip.

I love Hakone and have visited many times, but this was my first stay at this Hotel. I had wanted to stay here at least once, and it exceeded my expectations. Everything you need is thoughtfully packed into a compact space with no waste. The meals and the Onsen were both outstanding. I enjoy staying at various Hotels and Ryokan, but this is a Hotel I definitely want to return to—absolutely worth repeating.

    This was our second ...

This was our second stay because we really enjoyed relaxing here during our previous visit. This time, we stayed to celebrate an anniversary. At dinner, they prepared a commemorative dessert plate and took a photo for us. We truly appreciated the thoughtful gesture. The Onsen is also very comfortable, and we love it. We made our Reservation well in advance to match our anniversary and booked a Plan with 12:00 checkout. However, we were told that checkout was changed to 11:00 starting this April. We were not informed of this at check-in, so we spent the morning relaxing in the Room expecting to check out at 12:00. Then, just after 11:00, the front desk called to urge us to check out, and we had to rush to get ready and leave. If possible, I would have liked them to inform us at the front desk during check-in. Everything else was excellent, so it was disappointing that the end of our stay felt a bit rushed.

    It’s always a comfortable Hotel.

I stayed here again after a long time. Perhaps because it was the start of the new fiscal year, I noticed some staff wearing trainee name tags, but everyone was very courteous and I had a pleasant stay. For a while, I felt the quality of the meat had declined, so I had been choosing Japanese meals recently. However, I decided to try the steak course despite my concerns, and the meat was delicious. This makes me think it may be time to return to the Western-style dinner course as well. I will stay here again. Thank you very much.

Please take care of the flies.

Thank you to all the staff for your kindness and for making our stay so comfortable. It’s in a location within walking distance of Hakone Shrine. The meals were delicious. I’ve had French cuisine many times, and the bread here is excellent. The fig bread in particular was amazing, but when I left half of it, flies... There were several large flies and small gnats flying around. A staff member brought us new bread, but it wasn’t the fig bread (TДT). Next year, I’ll come again to eat the fig bread, so please take care of the flies then. Also, the Room, bath, and garden—everything exceeded expectations for the price. Thank you very much.

    The garden is beautiful.

Although the azalea season had passed, the vast, beautifully maintained garden was magnificent. We could step out into the garden directly from our Room and enjoy a carefree walk early in the morning. It was wonderful to see majestic Mt. Fuji with lingering snow beyond the garden. However, we felt that the washroom and bathroom were quite dim and could be hazardous for elderly guests. The large public bath was also dimly lit, making it difficult to see the amenities. Dust had accumulated on the downlights in the Room (especially in the washroom), which concerned us. All of your staff were very polite and attentive, and we had a comfortable stay. Thank you very much.

    It was the worst.

We have stayed here every year and always looked forward to it, but this time was the worst. Even though we were traveling with an elderly parent, dinner was delayed because it was crowded (something that could be solved by increasing staff). We were told we would be seated at 7:30–7:45 PM, but the meal was not served until 8:00 PM. For breakfast the next morning, we were told to come at 8:00 AM, but then we were informed it was fully booked! There are two restaurants, but the staff did not coordinate at all; when I asked the manager, I was told they are “one,” which made no sense. They also gave us incorrect information about the checkout time, and when I confirmed it again, there was no apology whatsoever. What should have been an enjoyable trip became a very painful one. The quality of the food was terrible.

    Azaleas in Full Bloom

The azaleas were in full bloom. With Lake Ashi in the background, the colorful azaleas emerging through the morning mist felt like a dream. I’ve been coming for the past three years to enjoy this magical scenery, and this year was the best yet. It was a shame that the rhododendrons were already almost finished, but enjoying both at once would be asking too much.

    Service at the mountain Hotel

Staying during the azalea peak bloom was truly beautiful and moving. Unfortunately, we were told breakfast starts at 7:30, but when we went a little after 7:35, we were surprised to be told there would be a 30-minute wait. We have never had to wait at any Hotel or Accommodation before, and we wondered what guests in a hurry would do. If the dining area is small, I think it would be better to assign breakfast times by Room and confirm them at check-in.

Azaleas and rhododendrons in full bloom

The fully blooming azaleas and rhododendrons in the rain were truly spectacular and beautiful. I waited a year to see the flowers, and I’m glad I finally could. I think it would have been even more wonderful if the weather had been better. Thank you to the staff for all your help in so many ways.

Azaleas and rhododendrons at their best

The day after the heavy rain and strong winds, the weather turned clear, and the azaleas and rhododendrons at their peak—along with Mt. Fuji—were spectacular. From the first-floor Room terrace, we fully enjoyed the Hotel’s trademark three cedar trees and the azaleas. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen open-air bath, dry sauna, massage chairs, a French dinner and Western-style breakfast, and the bar.

Impressed by the outstanding service at this prestigious Hotel!

We visited during the Azalea and Rhododendron Fair. The garden was about half in bloom and beautiful. Every time we passed a staff member, they stopped and bowed to us. You rarely see this at other hotels, and we were truly impressed by this historic, prestigious Hotel.\n\nAs part of our end-of-life planning, my wife and I have been visiting a Hotel each month—places that once felt out of reach.\n\nOn the way back, we were taken by Shuttle Service bus to Motohakone Port. We then visited the Narukawa Art Museum (using the Hotel discount voucher) and fully enjoyed wonderful Hakone.

The in-room dining Plan was extremely satisfying.

A few days ago, I suddenly decided to visit Hakone and, on a whim, searched for a stay at the Mountain Hotel—then found availability for this in-Room dining Plan. It was a little early for the azaleas, but I felt lucky to be able to stay at the Mountain Hotel during the fresh green season. This is a Hotel I love and have used several times before for both Accommodation and meals. Since our meals were delivered to the Room, we could enjoy the Onsen first and then relax comfortably in loungewear. Dinner was a two-tier Japanese set, and breakfast was a morning box—both were absolutely satisfying! I would definitely like to visit again with this Plan.

    French cuisine

When I visited alone before, I had been hoping to try the Crêpe Suzette, and this time I was able to enjoy it. It was prepared right in front of me, and it was more delicious than any Crêpe Suzette I’ve had anywhere else, so I couldn’t help but leave a Review. The chef’s graceful movements and the impressive flambé made it a wonderful memory. Thank you very much.

The hospitality, garden, and meals—everything was wonderful.

The hospitality from the doorman, front desk, and restaurant staff was wonderful—you could really feel their genuine warmth beyond any script. The property and guest rooms were carefully maintained, creating a truly relaxing atmosphere. We were blessed with perfect weather and enjoyed a cloudless view of Mt. Fuji, and the open-air bath with cherry blossoms was simply the best. I had read about this place in a novel and had wanted to stay here once; it exceeded my expectations—thank you from the bottom of my heart!

    Classic

I wanted to relax at Lake Ashi for the first time in a while, so after doing some research, I decided to visit Yama no Hotel, which perfectly matched my recent theme (classical style). I chose a Room with an Onsen bath available at any time and booked a plan with breakfast and dinner, planning to stay in and unwind. Since it was early spring, the weather and the garden flowers were still a bit uncertain, but walks around Lake Ashi felt refreshing, and I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the ample hot water in my Room. A friend who knows Hakone well had told me the food was excellent, so I looked forward to the French dinner. It had been a while since I’d seen so much cutlery laid out for a proper course meal, so I felt slightly intimidated at first, but everything from the amuse-bouche to dessert was delicious. It’s a wonderful setting, and I’d be happy if I have another chance to return. The Hotel seems to offer multilingual support online, and the historical exhibits were thoughtfully presented; having simple English explanations on-site would make it even better.

    A refined, long-established establishment

This was my first stay. As expected of a long-established Hotel, the service and meals were flawless. Before check-in, I had a beer in the lounge—the foam and temperature were both perfect. While gazing at Lake Ashi, I ended up having two glasses. One male staff member in charge of the dining venue moved with true professional efficiency and provided outstanding service, which left a strong impression on me. Of course, just as the Reviews said, the food was completely satisfying in both presentation and taste. The Diamond benefit champagne was also delicious. The Room was simple and easy to use, and I had a very comfortable stay. I also really appreciated being assigned a Room close to the large public bath. If I had to mention anything, the window glass in the Room was extremely dirty—I felt it really should be cleaned (though it may be difficult due to staffing shortages). Also, while I appreciated having unlimited towels at the large public bath, they felt somewhat worn—almost like sandpaper… At least for the Room towels, I thought replacing them might be a good idea. There were areas I’d like to see improved, but it was an Accommodation that still made me want to return. I’m sure staying during azalea season would be even more wonderful. Thank you very much for taking such good care of me.

    About Dinner

I stayed with the Sukiyaki set meal plan, but I was disappointed because a single instruction sheet was left on the table and I was told, “Please refer to that and do it yourself,” before the staff left. It felt a bit unfriendly. I think guests would be more satisfied if it were explained to them.

    Recommended in winter as well.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Ashi, this Hotel is well known for its spring azaleas and autumn foliage, but it is truly an Accommodation we recommend visiting in winter. With fewer tourists during this season, you can fully enjoy peaceful moments surrounded by the lake and mountains. The interior has a classic, calming atmosphere. Spending time relaxing in a warm Room while gazing out at the winter scenery beyond the window is a true luxury.
