    This is a wonderful Hotel.

Due to my child’s entrance exams, this was my first visit in several years, but the building is well maintained and exceptionally clean. The updated loungewear was very comfortable to wear. Even more impressive is the service from the Hotel staff—everyone at the front desk, restaurant, lounge, and housekeeping consistently provides such pleasant hospitality. There are many Hotels with great facilities but poor service; however, I felt that Grand Phoenix Okushiga is on a different level. As for dining, Italian cuisine is my personal favorite.

A soothing resort experience (especially exceptional for sauna lovers)

Starting August 1, I stayed for 3 nights and 4 days on the Long Stay Plan. On the first day, I took a local bus from Nagano Station to Yama-no-Eki, then used the Hotel’s Shuttle Service from Yama-no-Eki and arrived at the Hotel around 12:15. I had pizza and pasta for lunch at the restaurant and then checked in. Check-in is usually at 16:00, but since my Room had already been cleaned, I was shown to my Room shortly after 13:00 (which I truly appreciated). My Room was a Deluxe Twin Room, and because it was a corner Room, it felt very open and spacious. The balcony was also large, and it became part of my daily routine to relax there in the morning and evening—reading or simply enjoying the view. During my stay, the high temperature was 24°C and the low was 15°C. With low humidity, it was extremely comfortable. There was no need for air conditioning, and I slept soundly at night. The Hotel activities were also excellent. Options included an Okushiga Gorge Nature Walk (through a beech forest with an impressive waterfall) and an evening firefly viewing tour. Hotel staff accompanied us throughout, so I could enjoy everything with peace of mind. The morning forest stretch session was also wonderful—the kind instructor explained everything carefully, which helped me relax deeply. There were Japanese, Italian, and Chinese dining options available, so I could enjoy a variety of flavors—and every dish was delicious (including lunch). The staff service was pleasant as well; they noticed what guests needed before being asked and acted promptly. I also won’t forget how comfortable the lounge on the 2nd floor felt. During the day it is open as part of the lobby area, making it a great place to unwind quietly. Next time, I would love to visit when there is a fire in the lounge fireplace. It was a wonderful four days that truly refreshed both body and mind.

We were able to relax again this year.

As last year, I stayed on the Long Stay Plan. I joined the wetland trekking, firefly viewing, and yoga sessions. Other than that, I relaxed in the open-air bath and by the pool. I look forward to staying again next year.

    Okushiga in summer was wonderful.

Rather than being exceptionally outstanding, I felt it offered a high level of satisfaction across every aspect, and that overall balance was its appeal. It is an Accommodation I can recommend to anyone. Thank you very much.

    Like an Alpine mountain resort

A wonderful mountain Resort Hotel that feels like it belongs in the Dolomites of Northern Italy. It features an impressive pool and a large public bath, plus plenty of activities such as hiking and e-biking. For me, it’s the ideal summer getaway Resort Hotel.

I’m glad I stayed here again.

I came for spring skiing. When I made my Reservation six months in advance, I was asked about my dinner preference, and I was surprised that restaurant seating was already fully booked. Still, the Japanese dinner I chose turned out to be delicious, and the Japanese breakfast was also very good. Both the Japanese and Italian restaurants offer not only great food but also warm hospitality; the staff are attentive, making dining truly comfortable. After dinner, we were invited “if you’d like” to the lounge for dessert. With solid wood beams and pillars, large glass windows overlooking snowy scenery, a fireplace, and spacious sofas, it was a wonderful dessert time. The people who built this Hotel must have wanted guests to relax just like this. About skiing: The ski lockers are spacious, functional, and directly connected to the slopes. The Italian restaurant is also slope-side, so we could enjoy a delicious lunch without taking off our boots or ski wear. The gentleman at the rental corner we used was very pleasant and approachable, kindly explaining many things we didn’t know. The shop had a well-chosen selection of ski and outdoor gear, including in-house developed wear. Above all, having such a short distance from the slopes to the bath and sauna is fantastic. What stood out most during this stay was how “seamless” everything felt—head out from your Room through the lockers straight onto the slopes with no interruptions; come back to eat and rest just as smoothly. This Accommodation is clearly designed with skiers’ wishes in mind. There are other places that have it all—great food, baths, and Rooms—but here skiing sits right at the center of it all. Cute ski illustrations displayed throughout the building capture what this Hotel is about. Okushiga is far away; in return there’s no bustle on either the slopes or at this Accommodation—just quiet nature that’s almost lonely in its stillness—along with warm smiles from staff and deeply satisfying meals. Since there are plenty of guests who come specifically to enjoy all of that fully, it makes sense that Reservations fill up more than six months ahead as mentioned at the start. An extraordinary Accommodation. I will surely return again.”

Not only great for skiing, but also perfect for a relaxing staycation.

I stayed here for the first time while looking for a Hotel where I could enjoy both skiing and great cuisine. The slopes are right in front of you, and the meals are course menus in both Japanese and Western styles. The semi-open-air bath was incredibly relaxing, and the bath amenities were high-quality with an original brand. The lounge with its large fireplace was a very calming space, and I even spotted a raccoon dog and a fox. The ski lockers were very easy to use, and the gentleman in charge of rentals was extremely kind. Our Deluxe Twin Room was clean, spacious, and charming; the mattress firmness was just right. The towels and bathrobes were wonderfully fluffy, too. Heating is via panel heaters, so it’s quiet as well—just to name a few highlights. The balance between the Hotel’s size and its Facility offerings was excellent, and the hospitality was outstanding—truly a wonderful Hotel. The bus stop was also close by, which made everything very convenient. It’s not cheap by any means, but if possible I’d definitely like to return for a Multiple Night Stay.

    Comfortable!

This was my third stay, and it is always so comfortable. The food is delicious, the view from the Room is soothing, and the open-air bath and sauna are excellent. The staff responds promptly to requests. I would love to visit even outside of the ski season.

Non-accommodation guests were using the facility.

The check-in service, restaurant, and lounge were all pleasant to use. The meals were perfectly portioned, and the wine pairing was explained with care, making for a very enjoyable experience. They also accommodated allergies. However, at the pool and sauna facility on the basement floor, foreign tourists (likely staying at nearby pensions) occupied the jacuzzi, entered the cold bath in groups of 4-5 people reducing the water level by half, and some even entered the sauna without swimsuits but with towels wrapped around their waists. The sauna became overcrowded and unusable. My husband mentioned that they entered the changing room wearing snowboard boots and gear without removing their shoes. At first, we thought they were hotel guests; however, after overhearing their conversations, we became certain they were not. While unconfirmed, it seemed unlikely that they had paid any facility usage fees. This situation made us wonder if unauthorized use of facilities has become a common issue based on reviews we've seen before. Are you aware that paying guests are unable to use your facilities because unauthorized individuals are taking over?

A Journey of Comfort and Tranquility

I visit this place every year during this season. I stayed for one night. Although it was a short stay, I felt as if time flowed slowly, allowing me to truly relax. This was the first time during my travels this year that I experienced such a feeling. What stood out were the quiet and calm atmosphere created by other guests, the polite and kind service from the staff, the absence of foreign tourists which maintained the tranquility, and of course, the delicious food. It was a stay that made me feel it was truly worth spending money on. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking peaceful and serene moments.

    The Perfect Summer Vacation

The staff provided a warm yet appropriately distanced service, making my stay very relaxing. This is truly a classic Hotel. Simply spending time in the Hotel's garden, enjoying the cool breeze and gazing at the mountain view through the window, was incredibly soothing. Additionally, the massage I requested at night was performed by a skilled therapist who completely relieved my stiff shoulders. I would love to request it again.

    Why it is highly recommended

I stayed here in late August. It’s a relatively small hotel where the staff pays close attention to their guests. From the initial phone inquiry to conversations and greetings during my stay, I experienced warm and friendly hospitality that was far from being overly formal or insincere. If first-time visitors are treated with such care, regular guests must find this accommodation incredibly comfortable. Rather than focusing on modernity, the building is well-maintained and impeccably clean, offering a sense of comfort through its facilities. The greatest charm and luxury lie in the natural beauty of Okushiga Highlands, with the hotel serving as a perfect complement without unnecessary frills. Simply being there felt wonderful—it's amazing that such a hotel exists. Although ingredients may be limited due to its location, every meal—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—is thoughtfully prepared. Breakfast on the terrace was an especially delightful experience. Visiting during the green season when it wasn’t crowded made for an exceptionally pleasant stay. I can only imagine how fantastic it would be to come here for skiing. It was well worth traveling from afar to visit this place. I look forward to staying again!

Overall, for such a remote mountain location, the quality is very high. Not sure why, but it’s very satisfying.

I had a very comfortable stay.

I used the 3-night, 4-day long stay plan. Dinner was Italian on the first night, Japanese on the second night, and Chinese on the third night, all of which were extremely delicious. Some accommodations can have monotonous meals during a multiple night stay, but here you can choose your dishes every evening, which was excellent. For breakfast, you can choose between Japanese and Western styles; however, I opted for Western twice as it offered more side dishes along with a variety of salads, fresh fruits, and beverages.

A lovely Resort Hotel in the highlands

Stayed in the summer highlands of Nagano to escape the intense heat and enjoy some refreshing moments. The air was clear, and the only sounds were birds chirping in peaceful silence. Although the temperature was around 30°C, the room had proper air conditioning, making it very comfortable. The Room was spacious, impeccably clean, and charmingly elegant with a refined touch that perfectly matched the scenic beauty and atmosphere of Okushiga. Truly delightful! The large public bath, open-air bath, and sauna all offered stunning views of lush greenery outside, providing a deeply relaxing experience—truly unique! Dinner featured delicious Italian cuisine in a moody restaurant setting that made me momentarily forget where I was. Breakfast at the Japanese-style restaurant had a serene ambiance with an abundant variety of tasty dishes. The staff's hospitality was excellent throughout our stay, making it truly pleasant. While checking out after just one night’s stay (thank you!), I couldn’t help but think how wonderful it would be to spend several nights enjoying outdoor activities or visiting during ski season—it must be even better then! My honest impression: this place is superbly crafted—absolutely top-notch!

    It exceeded expectations!

We were blessed with great weather and thoroughly enjoyed our 3-day stay. It was a trekking-filled trip, but thanks to the staff's advice, the Hotel's bento we had at the summit of Mount Yokotaka was exceptional. The meals were delicious, and every meal left us saying, "I ate too much..." as a habit. Next time, we hope to visit during the snow season!

As stated in the guide by the second-generation president of this Hotel, is it aimed at affluent guests?

The staff's relaxed demeanor was wonderful. However, on the morning of the third day after our two-night stay, the dry sauna seemed to have been heavily used, possibly by foreign guests. Almost all sauna towels were used up from the previous day, and the sauna room was left in disarray. If possible, we would appreciate it if you could establish and enforce clear bathing or facility usage rules. We also prefer not to visit areas that are untidy.

    Excellent

The sauna and meals were very satisfying. The Room was spacious, clean, and well-maintained in this sophisticated luxury Hotel. All the staff were kind and provided attentive service. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

Generally satisfied, but a little "hmm?"

Overall, I had a comfortable stay. The Room was generally clean. The bathroom was also clean and comfortable. The dinner was delicious with good service. As the Room was a bit cold, they kindly provided a panel heater for us. However, I was disappointed to find a crumpled tissue with blood on it under the table. Although not related to the stay, I was let down by the watery and cold beef tongue stew served during lunch. It was unfortunate that the accompanying potatoes were much warmer.

A good Stays where you can feel tradition and history.

A traditional hotel located in the most secluded area of Shiga Kogen. While it cannot compete with the cutting-edge hotels in other regions in terms of facilities, the superior environment more than compensates for this. The service level, which once seemed to involve more personal interaction, does not quite meet the standards expected of top-class properties. For instance, the lobby overflowing with luggage before and after check-in cannot be excused by the facilities. The inability to purchase ski tickets at the front desk and the difficulty in using concierge-like services are also drawbacks. It is unfortunate that the facilities available after check-out and those available during the day are limited. It feels like there are aspects that could be improved with some ingenuity, but they have not been fully addressed, which is disappointing. If considered purely as a mountain lodge, it is an excellent quality property, but perhaps the expectations have been set too high, which might be the reason for the complaints. To protect the natural environment, the circulation in the large public bath is kept to a minimum, and it is not a free-flowing hot spring. Therefore, there might be a slight scent of disinfectant. This is understandable given the concept of the facility. I would like to visit again as a serious place that is fully equipped with everything necessary for skiing and experiencing the great outdoors.

    Autumn in Okushiga

I visited for the first time. I became interested because a friend said it was good, so I made a reservation. Actually going there, it was really nice. The room was spacious, with an interior that was both solid and cute, like a hotel in the Swiss mountains, and the air was clear. The Italian meal suited my taste as well. I had requested a shuttle service, and I was happy that the driver stopped at a beautiful scenic spot since there were no other passengers at the time. Thank you for taking care of me.

    Lovely time

I was amazed by the room and the view from the room, and I was able to spend my time comfortably as the cleaning was done beautifully. Despite being a hotel on a mountain, the service was pleasantly surprising. I enjoyed both the Italian and Japanese cuisine, and the chestnut rice at the end was very delicious. The dressing at the salad bar was tasty, and it made me happy.

Enjoy forest bathing and hotel life to the fullest...

The comfort of the hotel, the view from the room, and the wonderful nature of Okushiga were so impressive that my mother said, "I might not want to go back to Tokyo..." and our planned 6-night stay turned into 8 nights and 9 days! We've traveled domestically and internationally, but this was a first... We truly enjoyed the greenery of Okushiga and the hotel life to the fullest. Thank you for accommodating our sudden extension. How we spent our time at the hotel... The trekking guides were truly wonderful with their stories and support, and we enjoyed it so much that we used their services twice, fully enjoying the greenery and waterfalls! My mother also had a great time with private yoga under the blue sky. The indoor pool doesn't let in direct sunlight, so as someone with a sun allergy, I was happy to swim without worry. We enjoyed daily forest bathing with few people around, just as we had hoped. Hotel facilities... The view from the room and the open-air bath was, of course, wonderful, but the dinner menu was also rich and everything was delicious, with my 80-year-old mother finishing her meal every night! She was the most surprised by this. The ample storage in the room was also helpful for long-stay guests. The hotel staff were not too formal, yet provided a pleasant and proper service. The hotel's atmosphere reminded us of places like Dolomiti and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy, and we felt very relaxed. Thank you very much for everything. We definitely want to visit again.

It was a lovely hotel just as I imagined.

The weather on the day of our stay was rainy, but we were able to spend a quiet, relaxing, and comfortable time in the room and within the facility. We chose the Japanese course for dinner, and it was very delicious. I would like to visit again in a different season.
