    A Hotel Where You Can Meet a Squirrel Holding a Green Walnut

    I love the calm atmosphere of Tateshina Tokyu Hotel and have stayed here several times. Its setting in the forest, the dignified yet unpretentious interiors, and the quiet time you can spend here offer a charm that is hard to find at other hotels. This time was no different, and it reminded me again how much I like this hotel. Also, though it’s a small thing, I really like the toothbrushes in the guest rooms. They’re comfortable to use, and I can feel the hotel’s thoughtfulness even in these details. I hope you will continue with the current ones. On the other hand, precisely because I’ve been coming for many years, there are a few things that disappointed me. The biggest one is that Japanese dinner has been discontinued since this year. On a Multiple Night Stay, we used to enjoy being able to choose “Western tonight, Japanese tomorrow” within the hotel itself. Especially for us—who prefer not to drive once we arrive and instead relax in the forest or inside—the option was very important. French cuisine certainly has its appeal, but having Western meals both nights makes it feel like a slightly different hotel than before. I would be happy if Japanese dinner becomes an option again someday. I was also sorry to hear that the garden pool, long loved by guests, has ended operations starting this year. I understand it was due to aging facilities (Facility), but combined with the end of Japanese dinner options (Facility), it feels as though some of what made Tateshina Tokyu special is gradually disappearing. One more thing I would love to see enhanced is the in-house library collection (Facility). This is such a quiet Hotel where you can relax while looking out at the forest—perfect for reading. The current selection feels lacking not so much in quantity as in curation quality. If there were more books that you’d want to pick up specifically because you came to Tateshina—on Shinshu’s nature and culture, mountains, architecture, travel writing, literature—it would make time spent at this Hotel even richer. I’m not asking for new facilities or services one after another. Rather, I hope you will continue cherishing and preserving what makes this Hotel unique. These comments come from someone who truly likes this Hotel—and I hope to keep visiting for many years to come.

    A bit disappointing.

    Although I stayed here knowing it is a traditional Hotel, the staff did not seem sufficiently trained. I understand there may be company-related circumstances, but for guests, each stay is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. It did not meet my expectations.

    Please provide non-slip flooring for our senior dog.

    We stay here about three times a year. When summer is hot, the cool air in Tateshina is truly exceptional. As we’ve gotten older, a full French course has started to feel a bit heavy, and since our senior dog gets lonely when left alone, we now have both breakfast and dinner at the lodge. Our 15-year-old dog has been getting weaker in his legs, and he often can’t get up because the lodge floor is slippery. We’re looking forward to the renovation, as we hear the flooring will be non-slip.

    Staying with Your Dog (2)

    We stayed for one night with our dog on a weekend in June. This was our second stay. This time, we chose a more luxurious dinner Plan. I’m glad my wife enjoyed it. We were very satisfied again and will likely stay here again.

    The Facility was relaxing in a wonderful setting.

    With a mountain stream nearby and surrounded by trees, the setting was wonderful. The spacious bathhouse and access to the indoor pool made this a very satisfying trip. If I had to ask for more, the space for our two dogs to relax felt a bit small, and it would be helpful to have items such as waste bags and a flashlight for nighttime walks.

    Enjoy Nature and Events! A Family-Friendly Hotel You'll Love

    I stayed at Tokyu Tateshina Hotel on a trip to Nagano. We were lucky with the weather, and the magnificent views of Tateshina from the Hotel were truly stunning—I felt relaxed throughout my stay. There are well-maintained nature trails on the grounds, and it’s a real highlight to take a slow walk while enjoying the forest atmosphere. We had dinner in the main dining room, and it was delicious and very satisfying. The restaurant also had a pleasant ambiance. On the other hand, breakfast was quite crowded at certain times, probably because it’s popular, so I recommend going a little earlier. We stayed with our 3-year-old child, and there were family-friendly activities inside the Hotel such as an “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” event and a tree-planting experience. Both adults and children had a great time. It felt like a Hotel where you can make memorable experiences while connecting with nature. The building has a classic feel rather than being brand-new, but everything was well cleaned and comfortable with a good sense of cleanliness. I think this is an excellent Hotel for anyone who wants to relax in nature, including families with small children. It was a highly satisfying stay that made me want to visit again in another season.

    An Unparalleled Resort

    Tateshina Tokyu has built its history as a truly exceptional resort. What makes it “exceptional” is likely the vast grounds, the dignified architecture, the quality of the dinners served, and the attentive front desk service—all of which have long offered city guests a sense of relaxing escape from everyday life. And not only during the summer season. In the freezing snowy months, there were times when Manager M would quietly add logs to the fireplace himself, or shovel snow along the walkway leading to the entrance. In the restaurant, Manager S could also be seen personally bringing plates to tables and checking guests’ reactions. The staff were consistently pleasant as well. When I visited again recently after some time away, anime-style characters had been introduced: plush toys were piled on a wagon in the lobby, and character signboards had been placed around the forest and lake. For those who have come here seeking that “exceptional,” “away-from-it-all” calm that this Hotel once embodied, such additions may feel unnecessary—but they may be effective tools for attracting new mass-market guests. With both management and head chef having changed and Tateshina Tokyu beginning to write a new chapter in its history, I hope to continue supporting it—if only as one devoted fan—from here on as well.

    A lovely classic atmosphere.

    I was able to relax in a calm atmosphere. There was a group staying as well, but it never felt noisy, and I fully enjoyed the Tateshina resort. The French dinner was well balanced and delicious. They frequently asked if I wanted more bread, which made it easy to request—thank you! The Onsen is a bit of a walk, but still within an acceptable distance. (I think it would be fine if the shuttle bus ran on request, since everyone seemed to be walking there anyway...) It was a very meaningful stay. Next time, I’d like to visit during the season when the fireplace is lit.

    The front desk is the face of the Hotel!

    Everyone we passed in the hallway, the staff at breakfast, the people at the baths, and the activity staff were truly wonderful—exactly what you would expect. However, I was shocked by one female staff member at the front desk. Perhaps I spoke too slowly, but she kept tapping her finger nonstop as if she was irritated. Her face was smiling, which made it even more unsettling. Her explanations were also hard to understand and consisted only of yes/no answers to my questions. Because I had researched in advance, I was able to ask specific questions, but when you genuinely don’t know something, sometimes all you can say is “I’m not sure.” It made me wonder how she would respond in that situation. The building’s classic atmosphere was lovely, and because everyone except her helped make our stay so enjoyable, her constant finger-tapping is what stayed with me. I hope she won’t be irritated with other guests. If she wasn’t actually irritated, then I still feel it’s a habit worth correcting.

    We were able to relax and unwind in nature. When we opened the Room window, we could hear birds and frogs, and we even saw squirrels. The meals were, of course, Hotel quality and very delicious. I wish there had been a Shuttle Service to Chino Station in the 10 o’clock hour.

    Delicious dinner.

    It was my first stay at Tateshina Tokyu Hotel in a while. Set within the nature-rich Tokyu Village, the grounds are spaciously laid out and very relaxing. On an early-morning walk I came across deer, and at breakfast I also enjoyed watching birds and squirrels visiting the feeder. Dinner was carefully prepared dish by dish, and everything was delicious. Thank you for the wonderful meal. There were instructions for using the hair dryers in the large public bath, but they were not easy to use. Most of the staff were pleasant and welcoming, though a few seemed to be simply going through the motions. It’s not a hotel with every possible amenity or service, but we were lucky with the weather and had a very good stay.

    A Hotel with a Calm Atmosphere

    This was an excellent Hotel set amid abundant nature, offering high-level service and a calm atmosphere. The Room and the view from the Room were wonderful, allowing us to relax at ease. The food was delicious, and the wine selection was outstanding—especially the high quality of the house wine. However, it was disappointing that we could not purchase the house wine. One area for improvement was that the tea served after dinner was too cool and appeared to be served before it had brewed sufficiently. This is only a very small part of the overall experience, but since everything else is so good, it feels like a missed opportunity.

    I was soothed by the lush surroundings and the atmosphere of this historic Hotel. The meals were delicious as well. I also saw deer and squirrels. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Relaxing

    Overall, it was good. Dinner was delicious, but even though it was a set course, it took far too long—starting at 7:15 p.m. and finishing after 9:00 p.m. It felt like the other tables were regulars, which was disappointing.

    A Couple’s Trip Delighted by the Beauty of Fresh Greenery and a Long-Established Hotel

    I chose this Hotel because I wanted to see the fresh green of young spring buds, and the garden here is beautiful. From the large window in our Room, a few plum blossoms were still in bloom, and I was captivated by how lovely the contrast was with the new greenery. During our Multiple Night Stay, we spent blissful, relaxing time at the Hotel—walking around the pond and reading—and it felt like all my everyday fatigue disappeared at once. Thanks to the generously spaced tables at both dinner and breakfast, we were able to enjoy quiet, carefully prepared and delicious French cuisine while chatting as a couple. The service was exactly what you’d expect from a Tokyu Hotel! We would definitely love to stay again for another Multiple Night Stay. Even after returning home, my husband kept saying how wonderful it was—and how delicious the meals were. Thank you for an amazing three days.

    I was able to relax and spend quality time with my pet.

    My spouse and I stayed in a lodge for two nights with our small dog. It takes about a 10-minute walk through the grounds from the lodge to the dog run, but we enjoyed the walking path with its ups and downs. The dog run itself is small, but there aren’t many dogs, so it felt more than sufficient. On one of the days in between, we spent a relaxing day with our dog within the Tokyu Resort area. The vast grounds are beautifully maintained and include a pond; when you get tired, you can rest on a bench and take in the view of Mt. Yatsugatake. Also, since pets were allowed on the terrace of the Hotel lounge, we enjoyed tea time there with our pet—along with tea and delicious cake. There were also menu options for light lunches. We had dinner at the Hotel as well, but at that time our pet had to stay behind in the Room, which made us feel a bit sorry. We would be happy if there were a restaurant near the lodge where we could dine together with our dog. The lodge is old, but it was clean and comfortable. However, the floor was slippery for our dog’s paws, and our dog couldn’t even stand up on the entrance floor. We heard renovations will begin in May, so we hope you can improve the flooring. One more request: at the outdoor paw-washing area, we would appreciate it if hot water were available as well as cold water. What I’d like people to know through this Review after staying here is: You can fully enjoy nature on these vast, beautifully maintained grounds. For pets, there are varied walking paths with ups and downs—enough to keep small dogs entertained. And for us as a couple, we were able to enjoy an excellent dinner (everything was delicious right through to dessert). We would love to stay again.

    Relaxing time

    Everything was wonderful—the Hotel’s atmosphere, interior design, cleanliness, meals, and garden. The Room was spacious, with calming decor and furnishings, so we could relax and enjoy a leisurely stay. The food was delicious, and we were able to savor it at our own pace. Housekeeping was thorough, and the stay was very comfortable. At first I thought it might be inconvenient that the bath is outside the Hotel, but even a short walk outside felt refreshing with the pleasant breeze; the stars and moon were beautiful, and seeing the trees was a soothing moment. (There is also Shuttle Service, so you can feel at ease when you’re tired or on rainy days.) There is a large, lovely garden, and it seems like you could relax in the lounge as well—next time I’d like to arrive earlier and enjoy a longer stay at the Hotel.

    I was expecting a classic Hotel, but

    The hospitality was disappointing. The bathroom had mold and cracks, and both dinner and breakfast were average. While unloading our luggage in the rain, two staff members walked past after I simply said hello, without offering any help. Other guests were also ignored when they spoke to staff. I don’t know if it was their break time, but is that acceptable for Hotel staff? I was very disappointed by the complete lack of hospitality. Even older classic Hotels are often well maintained and known for good service—has the management changed? It was truly disappointing.

    A Hotel you’ll want to visit in every season.

    I visited Tateshina to see the cherry blossoms at Barakura English Garden. I checked in a little after 3:00 p.m. because I wanted to take a walk around the Hotel and its grounds. I enjoyed the Diamond benefit cake set and strolled around the pond in front of the Hotel. The mountain greenery was beautiful, and I even found skunk cabbage this time—this is a Hotel that makes me want to return in every season. The bed was very comfortable, and I slept soundly. I will visit again.

    We had a great stay.

    I chose this Hotel because I loved the exterior and interior design and wanted to stay in a cottage. Although it was cold in spring, the Room was warmed up and very comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. At breakfast, I also got to see wild birds and squirrels. The Onsen had a silky texture, and I could relax and soak at ease. This has become an Accommodation I’d love to visit again!

    A Hotel with Delicious Dining

    The Hotel itself was wonderful, with a great atmosphere, and all of the meals were delicious. It was disappointing that the bath is located far away. Also, since it is shared with Harvest guests, it was very crowded. It was also disappointing that there were no amenities or bottled water in the Room. I visited looking forward to the spa and bar, but they were closed, which was disappointing. The food—both French and Japanese cuisine—was excellent, so I was truly disappointed to hear that Japanese cuisine will be discontinued from April. Since it is far to the main Harvest building, for a Multiple Night Stay it may be inconvenient if dinner is only French, as going out to eat Japanese food would feel like a hassle. The bread served at breakfast and dinner wasn’t very good, so I think it would be better to offer more variety and improve the croissants as well.

    Stay with Your Beloved Dog

    Stayed for one night with my dog on a November weekend. The cottage was spacious enough, equipped with air conditioning and gas heating, ensuring warmth. The staff were all kind and helpful. The Onsen had both indoor and outdoor baths, which were excellent. The building with the front desk featured an impressive fireplace, adding to the cozy atmosphere. Meals were Western-style courses using local ingredients like Yatsugatake salmon, which was delightful. The wine pairing included champagne and orange wine, which was fantastic. Although it’s a bit of a walk from the cottage to the dog run, the path is surrounded by rich nature and enjoyable scenery. We also appreciated the autumn foliage and had a fulfilling weekend with our beloved dog!

    Hotel with Delicious Meals

    Located within the Tateshina Resort, it features a spacious garden, a separate Onsen facility, and is an enjoyable destination especially during pleasant seasons. Shuttle Service to the nearest station is available, making it convenient even for train travelers. The meals were particularly delicious.

    I usually stayed at ...

    I usually stayed at the hotel, but this time I was looking forward to the lodge. The bath was supposed to have a washing area, but it turned out to be a unit bath, and the water temperature was unstable, which was confusing. However, I had a relaxing time in the refreshing days, enjoyed the beautiful autumn leaves, and was blessed with good weather. On the final morning, I woke up to a snowy landscape. Thank you very much.

    A Resort Hotel Spanning a Vast Property

    Stayed for 2 nights. A classic-style Resort Hotel, perfect for enjoying a relaxing stroll on the premises after driving around the Tateshina area and fully experiencing the autumn foliage. The large public bath was in a separate building, but unfortunately, I didn't visit as indoor wear and slippers were not allowed.

    The Hotel stay was satisfying, but the fireplace was not in use.

    Tateshina Tokyu Hotel was my second stay, and despite being a classic hotel, it is well-maintained, and I was satisfied with this visit. However, one major disappointment was that during my 2-night, 3-day stay, I never once saw the fireplace in the tea lounge (featured on the hotel's official page as one of its selling points) lit with burning logs. I had been looking forward to sitting by the fireplace and enjoying a relaxing time watching the flames in the morning, evening, or after dinner at night. It was truly disappointing not to experience this during my stay.

    The female staff at the front desk was disappointing.

    I stayed here before, and the atmosphere was classical with a great view from the room, which allowed me to relax. The meals were delicious, and the staff were good; however, the female staff member who represents the hotel lacked a smile and had an unfortunate way of speaking. The Onsen was not relaxing, so I left early.

    Classic Resort

    This time, we came for the Matsutake mushroom dishes. The atmosphere is always classic and calm, and the room we stayed in had a great location, allowing us to enjoy early autumn in Shinshu. It was our first time trying Japanese cuisine here, and the quality was exceptional. The selection of sake was extensive, which made us very satisfied. The recommended red wine also paired perfectly with the dishes. Due to concerns about inbound tourism and staying in a separate building, we did not use the onsen but appreciated the quiet environment. We look forward to visiting again during another season.

    We apologize.

    Around 6:00 PM, we arrived at the Hotel as it was getting dark. We were not familiar with using a cottage while traveling with a dog, so we drove up to the main building entrance. As we unloaded our luggage and prepared to enter the building carrying our dog, a staff member from the front desk rushed over and told us sternly that this was not where we would be staying. They asked us to immediately put our luggage back in the car and informed us that dogs are not allowed inside this building. After understanding the procedure, we unloaded our luggage in front of the cottage. However, reversing the car in complete darkness to park it at a lot slightly away from the cottage was quite nerve-wracking. For older couples like us, arriving during daylight hours might be more manageable. Having stayed at Regina Resort Karuizawa two days prior and ANA Hotel Nagoya with our dog just before this stay—both offering exceptional service—we had come to expect such treatment as standard. This experience reminded me that I should not assume everything will be done or assisted for me; I need to be more mindful moving forward.
