  True Japanese Hospitality

  This was my first trip to Tohoku, and I stayed here. In recent years I hadn’t found an Accommodation that truly satisfied me, but this one exceeded my expectations in every way—hospitality, meals, and the Room. I took a taxi from the nearest station, and every driver said, “Everyone says there’s nothing to complain about!” They were absolutely right. It’s well worth the price—you won’t regret staying here. For those making a Reservation, I strongly recommend choosing a Plan that includes dinner! The portions are generous, and everything is delicious, including fresh seafood and mountain vegetables. Unfortunately it rained during our stay, but we were able to relax while listening to the rain and looking out over Matsushima. We’ll definitely return to see Matsushima in another season!

Traveling to a place you have never visited is exciting, but we understand that it can also bring many uncertainties, including choosing where to stay. That is why we are especially grateful that you researched our reputation in advance and decided to visit Shoan—this connection means a great deal to us. We would also like to sincerely thank you for sharing your memories of your stay along with so many photos.   Excellent

  A luxurious Accommodation with only 11 Rooms An amazing view with nothing but Matsushima Bay stretching out beyond the windows Everything is wonderful, but the meals are especially outstanding! Excellent in both quality and quantity The ingredients, seasoning, and preparation are all impeccable. Plenty of local produce is used as well, and you can really feel their pride in and commitment to the region. Every staff member is exceptionally professional, with truly attentive service. The lounge, where classical music plays, is also superb. An Accommodation I’d love to stay at again in a different season

  We’re sorry to hear that.

  The service was excellent, and both dinner and breakfast were very delicious, but the Room was disappointing. We booked a Room with an open-air bath, but the outdoor light did not turn on, so it was pitch-dark at night and we couldn’t use it. (We noticed this late at night.) Also, no hot water came out of the shower no matter how long we waited, and there were cicada shells stuck all over around the open-air bath—it was awful. The water also had a strong chlorine smell, so we couldn’t stay in for long. In addition, the bedding was old, and the mattress was too thin, so my body hurt and I couldn’t sleep. The Room also didn’t seem to be cleaned very well. It was very disappointing that this did not feel worth the price for an Accommodation costing over 100,000 yen per night.

  Thank you very much for traveling such a long way to stay at Matsushima Sakan Shoan. We also sincerely appreciate you taking the time after your stay to share your honest feedback. Although you kindly chose our Accommodation, we deeply apologize that during this visit we were unable to provide the most important thing an Accommodation must offer: a Room where you can truly rest and relax both physically and mentally. While we are grateful for your comments regarding our meals and service, the issues in the guest Room were too significant to be made up for by those aspects alone. In particular, despite your choosing a Room with an open-air bath, there were shortcomings in areas that should of course have been properly prepared for your comfort—such as the lighting, the condition of the shower, and the environment around the open-air bath. We must acknowledge that our checks and attention to detail were insufficient. Even though you treated us with warm smiles throughout your stay, it pains us greatly to think that you were not able to rest properly. Regardless of price, providing a clean and safe Room is a responsibility we must fulfill as a Ryokan. We take your feedback seriously—not as isolated issues related only to Facility maintenance or cleaning, but as something that reflects our fundamental attitude toward welcoming guests. At the same time, we are truly grateful that you enjoyed both dinner and breakfast, and that our service also left a positive impression. We will not let your comments end as a one-time matter. With the mindset of “Have we checked everything as if we ourselves would spend an entire night in this Room before welcoming guests?”, we will review each point again from scratch. Once again, please accept our deepest apologies that despite making the trip all the way to Matsushima and entrusting us with one night at our Accommodation, we failed to meet your expectations.   Highly satisfied

  I loved the exceptionally quiet scenery. The service was also very attentive. Everything was spotless, and the scent of the tatami was soothing. The flowers on display were beautifully arranged, and I was impressed by the furnishings as well. The food was as delicious as its reputation suggests. The bath amenities were excellent too—ReFa showerheads and hair dryers, and POLA products. It would be perfect if the bath were an Onsen. Every detail felt pleasant, making this a truly wonderful trip. It’s an Accommodation I’d recommend to others and would love to stay at again.

  This was my second s...

  This was my second stay, after visiting once 10 years ago. It’s a small, cozy Accommodation, and I think it’s the best in Matsushima. The meals were outstanding, and I was very satisfied. If I had one request, I would appreciate it if the cancellation fee started about 3 days in advance rather than 7 days. Also, the garden view from the dining area—along with the trees and potted plants—could be a bit more neatly maintained to improve the scenery. That said, I think this is a Ryokan I would happily recommend to friends.

  The service was excellent, just as the reviews said.

  All of the dishes were delicious. On previous stays in Matsushima, dinner was mainly buffet-style, but I felt this kaiseki meal was the best. The staff were attentive while keeping a comfortable distance, making for a very pleasant stay. Since the shop does not sell drinks and beverages from the post-bath lounge cannot be brought into your Room, we recommend purchasing drinks in advance and bringing them with you.

  I had a very relaxing stay.

  It was raining when we arrived by car and no one was in the parking lot, but as soon as we arrived a staff member came out and held an umbrella for us. Check-in was done in our Room, so we didn’t have to wait at the front desk and could move smoothly. The staff member in charge of our Room was very attentive, and we truly appreciated the thoughtful care during meals and throughout our stay. The food was also delicious, and we were able to relax comfortably. Although the bath is not an Onsen, it was fun to be able to float rose petals ourselves, and it was nice that drinks were provided in the changing room. If I could mention one thing, I thought it would be even better if there were a designated space in the changing room for drinking beverages. If someone is drying their hair, you might hesitate to sit down there. It rained on both days outside, but we were able to spend a relaxing time inside the Accommodation. Thank you very much.

  Thank you for taking care of us for two nights and three days. I have stayed in many places around Japan, but this is the first time I’ve written a Review. It was a wonderful stay, and although I didn’t have time to properly express my thanks in person, I’d like to do so here. Work has been very busy lately, and this time I came hoping to “just relax,” and this Accommodation was exactly what I was looking for. From our Room we could look out over the sea at Matsushima, and without having to leave the Accommodation much at all, we were able to spend slow, luxurious time simply gazing at the ocean. The cheerful and courteous service from the staff in charge of our Room left a strong impression on me, and thanks to them we felt comfortable throughout our stay. At the dining venue as well, they casually checked in with us—“Are you cold?”—and even someone like me who gets cold easily was able to relax comfortably. The tea sweets provided were delicious, and the bath was extremely soothing. After bathing, it’s also a fond memory that I could unwind by reading while enjoying cold tea at “Salon Kura.” Every meal was truly delicious. In particular, the anago (conger eel) takikomi rice really stayed with me. We were told that any leftovers could be made into rice balls, but it was so easy to eat that we kept reaching for more with our chopsticks and finished it all. My partner seems especially impressed by the Sendai Kuroge Wagyu steak. Being able to grill sasa-kamaboko at breakfast also made me happy—it felt uniquely Miyagi. Even when we were leaving, you prepared sightseeing maps and gourmet information for us as well, and we felt your warm thoughtfulness right until the end. It was a truly lovely Accommodation where you can take your time enjoying both Matsushima’s scenery and how comfortable everything feels on-site. It ended up being a stay that refreshed both body and mind. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much for everything during our stay.

In particular, the anago (conger eel) takikomi rice you enjoyed is made with thick, tender anago caught near Matsushima Bay, and it is one of Miyagi’s signature flavors that many guests praise highly. Hearing that it suited your taste has greatly pleased our head chef and kitchen team as well. The fresh greenery of Matsushima during your visit is indeed beautiful, but one of Matsushima’s charms is how its scenery changes with each season. In autumn, vivid foliage colors the landscape; in winter, snowfall creates an even quieter, more magical view from your Room. We also offer many seasonal ingredients as well as local sake selections that pair wonderfully with seafood unique to each time of year—so we hope you will enjoy a different season on another visit.   Anniversary

  We visited for the first time to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday. We’ve traveled to many places together, but Shoan felt like an especially memorable Accommodation. With the quiet scenery, unobtrusive and thoughtful hospitality, and delicious food, it became a truly wonderful anniversary. It seemed that many of the staff were young, and their sincerity came through clearly. I sincerely hope you will continue to be loved by many guests and enjoy lasting prosperity.

  The meals were delic...

  The meals were delicious, and we had a very comfortable stay. We enjoyed an early-morning walk along the promenade while listening to birdsong, savoring a peaceful experience you can’t find in everyday life.

  The perfect Accommodation for exceptional hospitality in every occasion

  Through IKYU.com, my family and I have stayed at various Accommodations across the whole country. Nine years ago, an acquaintance recommended this wonderful Accommodation, and we visited then. This time, we returned with our family for the first time in exactly nine years. When it comes to in-house Facilities—especially for women—there are many details that matter, and even the large public bath impressed us: the showers and hair dryers were ReFa products, and we truly felt the thoughtful attention to detail. At many Accommodations I often find myself questioning aspects of the bathing experience, but here it was outstanding. My body and hair felt amazing afterward. It’s rare to find an Accommodation that uses ReFa products! What impressed us most at this Accommodation was the exceptional attentiveness of the staff during meals. Perhaps they noticed that my husband is left-handed; at breakfast a staff member casually said, “We’ve changed where we place your chopsticks,” and indeed they had positioned them where they were easier for a left-handed person to pick up. This is something even top-tier Hotels rarely manage with such awareness and care. As this trip combined a school admission celebration and our wedding anniversary, thank you very much for preparing celebratory sake and sekihan (red bean rice). Everything was perfectly taken care of, and we were truly moved.

  Excellent service.

  The staff’s clear explanations and warm hospitality in kimono blended beautifully with the traditional Japanese Ryokan atmosphere. The Room felt a little older than in the photos, but it was comfortable. Overall, the food was delicious and there was a good variety of dishes, but it was a bit disappointing that the fatty tuna sashimi was still partially frozen. I know it must be very challenging to continue providing high-quality service these days, but this is a wonderful Ryokan with beautiful views, and I hope you keep up the great work.

  You can relax and unwind.

  This was my 10th stay. I have been coming here since before the Great Earthquake, and the meals have never failed to meet my expectations. This time, I was told it might be a bit noisy because a group was staying and there would be many children, but it wasn’t like that at all—I was able to relax in peace as usual. It’s about 10–15 minutes by taxi from Matsushima-Kaigan Station, and the view of Matsushima Bay right in front of you—and its tranquility—is wonderful. I took a walk to the cape in the evening, and just as the sun was setting, a “sun road,” like a moon road, reflected beautifully on the sea.

  A highly satisfying accommodation!

  This Accommodation was understated, polished, and pleasantly serene throughout, and I think you’ll be highly satisfied. Perhaps because it was a weekday, I didn’t run into any other guests and was able to enjoy quiet time in my Room. With checkout at 12:00, I could take the morning at a very relaxed pace on departure day. The interior reflects the owner’s wide-ranging interests across both Japanese and Western styles, creating an atmosphere unlike other Accommodations. I love Ryokan breakfasts, and I highly recommend trying the breakfast at Shoan at least once.

  Accommodation filled with the finest hospitality

  From the moment we arrived at the parking lot to the time we departed, we felt the warm hospitality of the staff. Even as we drove away, a staff member working in the garden smiled and bowed to us. The room was comfortable, with a beautiful and serene view of the sea, birdsong, and a cozy bed that made our stay very pleasant. This is an accommodation where adults can relax and unwind. The meals—both dinner and breakfast—were incredibly delicious, served on beautiful tableware. The attentive staff added to an enjoyable dining experience. This was our first stay in Miyagi Prefecture, but it’s an accommodation we would love to visit again.

  A great accommodation.

  Due to the busy days of moving, I stayed for just one night, but the perfect service at Shoan gave me energy. Once again, it started with the manager's warm "Welcome back," and my Room was attended by the same staff member as last time, whose lovely smile provided a sense of comfort. The meals were seasonal and delicious. I enjoyed additional dishes like beef tongue and tempura eel, making it a delightful dining experience. For breakfast, I chose Western-style for a change; the three types of bread were particularly memorable and tasty. The staff attending during breakfast was very polite and attentive, making for a pleasant start to my day. Thank you very much!

  The meals are delicious, but...

  This accommodation is known for its delicious meals, and we stayed here looking forward to enjoying the "meals." Unlike modern accommodations, it is rare to have a dedicated "room attendant" who guides you to your room, explains the room, escorts you to the dinner venue, and serves the meals, providing exceptional hospitality. The attendant was young but very professional, and their calm and polite demeanor made them seem older until we learned their age during our conversation. As for the meals, they were indeed delicious, living up to the reputation of "delicious meals." However, perhaps due to the many additional dishes, the portions were quite large, and we couldn't finish everything, which made us feel sorry for the chefs. (The final rice was made into "onigiri" for a late-night snack, which we enjoyed in the room.) The accommodation is very quiet, partly because the number of guests is limited. There is hardly any chance to encounter other guests, providing a high level of privacy, which makes it a great place to stay. Although the bath is not an onsen, there is a large public bath and an open-air bath. The limited interaction with other guests allowed us to indulge in a luxurious atmosphere, which was very enjoyable.

  I had a relaxing time.

  I chose this accommodation to escape the daily hustle and relax, and it was the perfect choice. Usually, I arrive at accommodations late at night during trips, but this time I checked in at 3:00 PM. I was shown to a room on the second floor, and when I opened the shoji screen, the stunning view of Matsushima unfolded before me. With a bed right next to me, I immediately lay down and enjoyed the scenery. As evening approached, the view gradually changed into something even more picturesque. For dinner, I ordered a sashimi platter which came in an unexpectedly large portion; however, everything was fresh and incredibly delicious. The service was excellent as well, allowing me to fully relax during my stay.

  Exceptionally quiet and relaxing!

  I love this ryokan. I have been staying here about once a year since before the great earthquake. This time, the seafood dinner was absolutely delicious. My wife was also very satisfied. The day after our stay, we were able to watch the Blue Impulse flight near the Matsushima sightseeing boat terminal—it was amazing! I will visit again.

  A cozy accommodation.

  It was great. The room was spacious and made me feel relaxed. The staff were attentive, making the stay comfortable. In particular, the woman who assisted during check-in left a good impression. As this accommodation was chosen as the final stop of my Tohoku trip, taking time to relax here turned out to be the right decision. It’s an accommodation I would like to visit again.

  We visited during a temporary return from overseas for our wedding anniversary trip. The view from the room was stunning and flawless. During dinner, they prepared celebratory chopsticks, sake, and red rice to celebrate our anniversary. It was quiet and very relaxing. We definitely want to visit again! Our ryokan is a small establishment with 11 rooms, located on a cape away from the city. Most of our rooms, including the one used by T AZ-sama, are designed to offer close views of the serene Matsushima sea. At this time of year, the walking paths allow guests to enjoy bird songs and observe various wildflowers blooming in preparation for summer. We strive daily to provide meals using local ingredients unique to this area, hoping they contribute positively to your memories of staying with us.   Experience the tranquility of Matsushima.

  I stayed at the accommodation with my 85-year-old mother and myself, who just turned 60. The view of Matsushima from the room is a serene beach that soothes daily fatigue. You can forget the passage of time for a while and enjoy a wonderful moment. The dinner had a variety of dishes, all flavorful and satisfying. When you have time, staying near Matsushima is also a great idea. I will visit again!
