    No matter how many times I stay at this Hotel, I have nothing to complain about. It truly provides a very pleasant stay. I would like to visit again when I have the chance.

    A heartfelt Accommodation

    I visited this Ryokan in search of delicious meals and a quiet Onsen stay. The iced tea and small sweets served right after arrival were wonderful. The building preserves a classic atmosphere while key areas have been properly renovated. The main building with the dining area and the accommodation wing are across a small path, which may be challenging for elderly guests, but the walk has its own charm. The Onsen water was very gentle and at a comfortable temperature. The meals let us fully enjoy Shinshu’s food culture. Not only were the ingredients excellent, every dish was carefully prepared, and I could feel the chef’s passion. What surprised me most was the sashimi—being able to enjoy such high-quality sashimi in Bessho Onsen, surrounded by mountains, was truly impressive. The thick-cut Shinshu salmon in particular was outstanding and something you can only experience here. The sweet-simmered carp is a local specialty, simmered for hours until even the bones are tender—an exceptional dish that clearly takes great effort. Everything through to the final rice and miso soup was genuinely delicious, and I was completely satisfied. Their commitment to quality extends beyond the main dishes to essentials like rice, miso, and tea leaves as well, which is truly admirable. With complimentary coffee and tea available anytime, sake tasting service, Shuttle Service to the station, and more, this Accommodation overflowed with heartfelt hospitality. If I had to mention any negatives, there are two: I would have appreciated a higher-quality cleansing/face wash provided at the Onsen washing area (it left my skin feeling very dry), and sounds from sliding doors or room doors in neighboring rooms or upstairs carried quite loudly—adding stoppers or cushioning materials might help reduce noise. For this reason alone, I deducted one star for rooms/amenities. As autumn deepens further from here on out, Bessho Onsen will likely become even more atmospheric! I would love to visit again.     Comfortable Accommodation

    This was my first stay, and it was wonderful. I enjoyed visiting the large public bath and the private baths, felt at ease chatting with the staff, ate delicious food, and slept comfortably—simple, but truly relaxing. Personally, I was surprised by how much the Western-style breakfast felt like something you’d find at a city hotel. The cucumber in particular was so refreshing and delicious. I would definitely like to stay again.

    An Accommodation Where You Can Sleep Surrounded by Tranquility

    We were able to stay at Kashiwaya again this year as a family, and we had a truly wonderful time. With only a few Rooms, we hardly ran into other guests even in the baths, so we could quietly enjoy the excellent waters of Bessho Onsen. The meals are gently seasoned and make the most of local ingredients, and no matter when we visit, it’s a mysterious Accommodation where we always sleep soundly at night. We look forward to visiting again.

    The Best Onsen Accommodation in Nagano Prefecture

    While the Facility shows some signs of age, it has been carefully renovated and does not feel outdated. Above all, the quality of the Bessho Onsen water is excellent, allowing you to fully enjoy the Onsen without a worry. Both dinner and breakfast showcased the chef’s outstanding skill; every dish was warm, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying. In addition, it offers great value for money—an Accommodation I felt sure I would choose again whenever traveling in Shinshu. Thank you sincerely to all the staff for your kindness. Thank you.

    The hospitality was excellent!

    I chose Bessho Onsen for its convenient access so I could enjoy an Onsen trip with my elderly parents. Since my mother preferred a bed, I narrowed it down to a Japanese-Western style room with an open-air bath, and decided on Kashiwaya. From arrival to departure, the service and courteous language (I believe it was the proprietress) were outstanding. In fact, one person suddenly couldn’t join us, and the way they handled it was simply something I was truly grateful for. There are many places with wonderful Facilities and meals, but this reminded me once again that in the end, it’s the people that matter most. The Accommodation is split into two buildings, which was a bit inconvenient at times, but it’s a place I would love to visit again. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    With such high Review ratings, I was excited even before my stay—and this Accommodation exceeded my expectations! I enjoy Hotel stays about twice a month and don’t usually write Reviews… but I was truly impressed, so I’d like to focus on three standout points. [Service] From the initial phone call to the Shuttle Service, Room guidance, and explanations for meals and the private baths, the service level was consistently excellent. The staff’s choice of words, attentiveness, and even small gestures showed genuine care in many moments. In particular, the thoughtfulness from pickup through check-in left a strong impression. The staff member in charge of our meal mentioned it was their second year here—but honestly, it was hard to believe (“Only two years?!”). It also made me feel that training is thorough. Seeing experienced staff and younger team members working together so smoothly was wonderful. I also really appreciated being spoken to with a comfortable sense of distance. [Onsen] The temperature was just right, and it was great that there are various types of Onsen within the property. Bessho Onsen truly deserves its reputation as “beauty skin waters.” Visiting different baths around town sounds fun too, but since we stayed during a hot season, it was nice to enjoy everything easily on-site. The private bath includes both an indoor bath and an open-air bath—highly recommended. I chose a Room with an open-air bath as well, and being able to soak whenever I wanted was fantastic—so I recommend selecting a Room with a bath if possible. [Room] As other Reviews mentioned, the moment we entered the Room we could smell fresh new tatami! It was spacious enough and very well cleaned. It was also lovely that fresh flowers were displayed throughout the property including in our Room. Personally, I appreciated having all yukata sizes prepared in advance in the Room (I always struggle choosing). The layout felt uncluttered and made for a very comfortable stay. One personal request: since I don’t drink much coffee, I would be even happier if there were some decaffeinated options (such as herbal tea). The meals using local ingredients were delicious, and we were happy to be able to relax in a private dining room. There are some categories where I gave a “4” in my Review rating—not because anything was lacking significantly, but because I hope for continued improvement. Overall though, I am extremely satisfied. Thank you very much for taking care of us.

    The Onsen, cuisine, and hospitality are all exceptional.

    We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath. The hospitality was wonderful, with thoughtful touches everywhere. Both the exterior and interior had a charming atmosphere and felt very clean. The meals were served in a spacious private dining room. The dishes were beautifully presented and enjoyable to look at, and everything tasted excellent—we were very satisfied. Even though the portions seemed small, we ended up completely full. Breakfast was also delicious. For the baths, we first used the private open-air bath, but we noticed some dark discoloration around the shower area and hose. The open-air bath in our Room was very relaxing. The water had a slight silky feel and a faint sulfur scent that felt great. It was a bit disappointing that there was no shower at the open-air bath, so we had to wash our hair in the shower room; since it wasn’t right next to it, we had to dry off and go through the Room to reach the open-air bath. Some people may find moving between the main building and annex—and the maze-like layout—a bit challenging, but we enjoyed getting lost and turning it into something fun. It was also nice that they provided not only yukata but also samue loungewear. This is an Accommodation we would like to stay at again if we visit the Nagano area.

    Relax and unwind for the perfect holiday.

    Our Annual Summer Trip Due to my work schedule, I travel around Nagano Prefecture every year with an old friend from Kanagawa, and this Accommodation was easily in my top three overall—for the baths, the meals, and everything else. With a 12:00 checkout, we could truly relax, and my friend was grateful as well. The simmered green plums were unforgettable—carefully prepared dishes that were truly delicious and stayed with us. We would love to visit again.

    After all, Kashiwaya.

    This time I visited with a friend. I have stayed here before with my family, and bringing my friend this time made me very happy. My friend is not comfortable with large public baths, so having a bath in the Room was a big plus. They also enjoyed the meals, and we truly had a wonderful, relaxing stay. We will definitely come again.

    It was perfect!

    Kashiwaya was perfect in every way! The Rooms are divided between the annex and the main building, so we were able to spend our time quietly. The Onsen in the annex was just the right size, and it was very relaxing and comfortable. The meals were beautifully prepared and tasted great. The portions were generous, so we were very satisfied! Best of all was the hospitality. From showing us to our Room to explaining dinner, everything was more thorough than at other Ryokan, making this a truly memorable trip.

    Japanese Accommodation

    Right next to Kitamuki Kannon, the sound of the temple bell heard in the morning and evening is soothing. The attentive, hospitable service was comfortable and relaxing. Although guests go barefoot inside the building, the cleaning was impeccable with no issues. The Room and common areas were renovated a few years ago and are clean and beautiful, but the large public bath and private bath remain as they were and feel a bit dated. The hot spring water was excellent, with plenty of mineral deposits (yunohana). As for dinner, we chose a Plan with smaller portions, but I couldn’t finish everything—sorry about that. The seasonal presentation was also a delight to enjoy with the eyes.

    An Accommodation I’ve been curious about for a long time

    I make it a point to visit Zenkoji Temple and Kitamuki Kannon every year, and recently I often time my trip for the firefly season. I had been curious about this Accommodation because it isn’t visible from the road, so this time I decided to stay here. Many Accommodations in Bessho Onsen have tatami flooring and ask guests to leave their shoes and even car keys with them, and this place was the same. The staff member who first guided me had a wonderful smile, and the sweets served with matcha were delicious. I usually enjoy sake tasting at the liquor shop along the road, so I was surprised that I could do sake tasting in the lounge here. The coffee was also excellent. The bath in my Room had a window—so it wasn’t an open-air bath—but it had a lovely atmosphere, and the water was great. It was truly relaxing. The large public bath changes by time slot, so I was able to use both, and the private bath also had an indoor bath and an open-air bath—such a great way to start the morning. It’s very close to Kitamuki Kannon; hearing the temple bell was soothing, and the bed was very comfortable as well. Like others have mentioned, there was also that adorable broad bean “frog” under butterbur leaves—it made me smile. I was told they come up with different touches depending on the season, which makes me want to return throughout the year. A rainbow appeared during dinner too—it was beautiful. Most of all: during dinner I mentioned that I wondered whether we might be able to see fireflies. Before we finished our meal, someone looked it up for us and hurried over to let us know—such thoughtful care from someone so young really meant a lot. We went for a walk after dinner and were able to see fireflies again this year. Thank you very much. This is an Accommodation where you truly feel how outstanding their hospitality is—I hope next time I can bring my mother and father-in-law as well. At check-out, there was someone at reception whom I believe may have been the owner; he spoke gently, and I’m glad we were able to meet at the end. It’s an Accommodation with wonderful smiles and attentiveness from all of its staff members. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

    Everything was satisfactory.

    Wanting to get away from the everyday hustle and relax, we chose this Accommodation—and it turned out to be an even more wonderful stay than we expected. The Room we were shown was spacious and comfortable, so much so that we nearly lost track of time. Although the bath is a large public bath, we hardly ran into anyone else, and it felt like a private bath just for us as we enjoyed a luxurious soak at our own pace. Above all, the meals were truly impressive. Every dish was delicious, and we were deeply moved by the chef’s thoughtful care. Breakfast was also wonderfully generous—so much so that I found myself thinking, “Is it really okay to eat this much?”—and it made us feel happy from the very start of the day. Including the kindness of all the staff, everything about this Accommodation was exceptional. Being able to visit with my elderly parents made it even more special—thank you for giving us such wonderful memories.

    It was truly wonderful.

    I stayed here while visiting Zenkoji Temple and Kitamuki Kannon. The hospitality, Room, and cuisine were truly wonderful—I didn’t want to leave. The staff provided warm, pleasant service, and this was the first Accommodation where I felt so completely relaxed. In particular, thank you to Mr./Ms. I who showed me to my Room, and Mr./Ms. K who assisted with dinner, for your heartfelt hospitality. Of course, everyone was excellent. The food was carefully prepared with a real sense of the season—delicious not only in taste but also a delight to the eyes. Everything felt just right, making it a very comfortable and welcoming Accommodation. When I come back to Bessho again, I will definitely stay here again. Thank you very much.

    It was exactly as expected.

    The Room’s open-air bath was spacious enough to stretch out comfortably, and I was able to relax in the hot water while looking out over the courtyard. The food was also excellent. The simmered carp in particular had a nostalgic, richly seasoned flavor and was cooked until even the bones were tender—truly delicious. Everyone at the Accommodation was easy to talk to and took great care of us. Thank you very much.

    Thank you for your hospitality. The service was excellent, and the Accommodation was very clean, so we had a comfortable stay. At many Accommodations these days, freshly cooked rice is served for each guest group; I think it would be even better if that were the case here as well.

    Onsen Trip with Friends

    A trip to Nagano with a friend who lives far away. We chose Kashiwahonten, an Onsen inn with great ratings on the site and in Reviews. We wanted to relax, so we checked in at 15:00. Since we came by car, the parking entrance was narrow and hard to find at first, so we drove past it, parked a little away, and walked back to check. There was a staff member who seemed to be there to greet guests, so we made a U-turn and arrived!! The only disappointing thing was that the greeting staff member’s service was a bit unfriendly. Everyone else was very polite, so I couldn’t help wondering later why only that person felt different. After that, everything—the service, quality, food, Onsen, and the cleanliness of the Room—was excellent, and we had a great time. It felt like an adults-only style Accommodation with high-quality Onsen water. I’d love to visit again if I have the chance. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful time on this trip with my friend.

    It was a very quiet accommodation, and the hospitality was excellent!

    I visited with my cousin, whom I’m very close with. We were picked up at Bessho-Onsen Station, and we were excited all the way to the Accommodation—and it truly lived up to that excitement. I was looking for a place that wasn’t a large Accommodation, so it was quiet and time passed in such a relaxed way. The Room was very spacious, and I loved that you don’t need slippers or any indoor footwear inside the building—the tatami-mat hallways were wonderful. The in-room amenities and drinks were plentiful, and I was completely satisfied! Every meal was delicious, and you could really tell how much care went into preparing everything (the yudofu at breakfast was amazing!). The service was pleasant, and we had a wonderful time. The Onsen water quality also felt excellent—my skin became so smooth. You could feel the staff’s thoughtfulness and their constant care to keep the entire building comfortable (the private bath was fantastic!). Everywhere in the building felt clean. We visited during a season when the greenery was beautiful, so next time I’d love to come during autumn foliage season! This is an Accommodation I definitely want to visit again.

    A Comfortable Accommodation

    This was our second stay, following our visit last December. Due to an unexpected accident right before the trip, we had to return on short notice in a wheelchair, but you welcomed us warmly and showed great consideration throughout our stay—thank you so much. We hesitated until the very last minute, but we’re glad we made the effort to come. Last time, one night didn’t feel like enough, so this time we stayed two nights during cherry blossom season. The exquisite meals were delicious both days, with a different style on the second day as well, and it made us feel that a Multiple Night Stay is not a bad idea at all. We especially love the Room with beds and an indoor bath with free-flowing hot spring water that can be enjoyed regardless of the weather. As our luggage increased, you even helped arrange courier shipping for us. The calm owner, the cheerful proprietress with her wonderful smile, and every member of staff—clearly well trained—provided heartfelt hospitality that was truly outstanding. Visiting Onsen is the only hobby my spouse and I share, so we travel several times a year, but this has become such a favorite Accommodation that we no longer feel like staying anywhere else. It’s easy to see why there are so many repeat guests.

    The Best Accommodation

    I gifted my parents a stay so my mother could celebrate my father’s 80th birthday, as they live apart. I asked in advance if you could arrange a surprise with flowers in the Room, and you kindly took care of it. On the day, the staff were truly warm and welcoming. My parents were delighted and said it was the best Accommodation in every way—the Room, the meals, and the baths. They said they want to stay healthy and come back again.     I stayed here in early April 2026. I have used many Accommodations over the years, but I have never experienced one that showed such thoughtful care and support—far beyond what I casually asked for—as this Accommodation did. Not only are the Facilities spacious and comfortable and the meals delicious, but above all, the wonderful and pleasant service from everyone working here left a lasting impression on me.     Everything is excellent.

    As it was cherry blossom season, we were welcomed with a wonderful two-tiered meal to start. The presentation was beautiful, and every dish was impressively delicious. The private bath also had both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and it was spacious and very satisfying. However, when bathing with a family member who needs assistance, the 40-minute time limit felt rushed, so having 60 minutes would be very helpful. The hospitality of all the staff was excellent, and we would love to visit again!

    It was a wonderful accommodation!

    After seeing so many Reviews calling it “the best Ryokan ever,” I decided to stay here. And they were right—it was a truly wonderful Accommodation. I usually don’t return because I like trying different places, but this is one I genuinely wanted to revisit once a year. First, the Onsen was outstanding. It’s a sulfur spring, but also alkaline, so it left my skin feeling moisturized. The silky-smooth water was exactly my kind of bath. There are four large public baths in the building, but the best water—closest to the source—was the open-air bath in our Room. It was the kind of water you want to soak in forever. If you love hot springs, you should definitely choose a Room with an open-air bath. Highly recommended. What surprised me most was that other guests actually greeted us here. That rarely happens at large Ryokan, but perhaps because this is a small place that attracts true Onsen lovers, people would start with “Hello,” and we even enjoyed some friendly small talk—it made the stay even more fun. The service was also excellent. When I went to the front desk, they addressed me by name as the Reserver (“Mr./Ms. ___”). Remembering every guest must be difficult, yet their hospitality was impressive. The Shuttle Service to the station was also very helpful. All of the meals were delicious—especially the miso soup, which had a gentle sweetness and tasted amazing. This time they prepared private dining rooms for both breakfast and dinner—and each even had its own restroom! It made dining completely stress-free (and convenient when you need a quick break). I really appreciated it. My companion is quite sensitive and usually can’t sleep well at Accommodations, but they slept soundly here. The firmness of the bed and pillow felt just right, and perhaps the soothing sound of fresh water constantly flowing into the open-air bath helped as well. I slept very well too. I also loved the sake tasting service, being able to choose from different newspapers, and having options for yukata and samue loungewear. The location is great too—about 20 seconds on foot to Kitamuki Kannon Temple. It’s an exceptional Ryokan with no obvious drawbacks. It’s an Accommodation that makes you want to support it and hope it continues for many years to come. This got long—but if you’re reading this Review, I truly hope you’ll give it a try.

    A thoughtful, memorable stay.

    We stayed here for our 20th wedding anniversary trip. The surprise cake we requested in advance was beautifully prepared, and our whole family had a wonderful time. Each dish was carefully prepared, the meal was very satisfying, and it felt perfect for a special occasion. The Room was calm and comfortable, so we could truly relax. The bath was also wonderful and deeply soothing. We were especially impressed by how warm and welcoming all the staff were, which made our stay very pleasant. What made us happiest was that they took a commemorative photo for us and presented it in a frame as a gift when we checked out. We were touched by this unexpected kindness, which made our 20th anniversary memories even more special. This was a lovely Ryokan where everything—from the service and meals to the Room and bath—was excellent. I would recommend it to anyone planning an important anniversary or special trip. We would love to stay again.
