In the area with the heaviest snowfall in Japan, where snow, sky, soil, mountains, rivers, people, and living beings have slowly nurtured each other.

Alongside Shirakami-Sanchi and Oku-Kurobe, Oku-Tadami and Oku-Oze are among Japan’s most remote hidden regions. The place name “Oze” is said to derive from Oze Saburo, who is believed to have reached this land after being exiled from the capital during the Heian period. Since then, these mountains have been spoken of as a sacred realm where the gods dwell.Echigo-Komagatake—one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains—and Nakanodake and Arasawadake—both among the 200 Famous Mountains—tower before you. Along the Kitanomata River, you can even spot large char with the naked eye, in scenery reminiscent of Kamikochi.
