Perched 60 meters above sea level on the heights of Hiraiso Cape, surrounded by Ishikari Bay, you can take in sweeping views of the endless blue sea and sky, with a full panorama of Otaru Bay and downtown Otaru spread out below. Ginrinso, a historic herring mansion and ryotei-style Accommodation with Onsen, is regarded as a representative example of fishery architecture. It was originally built as the residence of a major fishing magnate in Yoichi, once famed at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula as a prosperous herring fishing ground. Its grand yet elegant presence has only grown more dignified over more than 140 years since its founding, and it is now counted among “Hokkaido’s 100 Cultural Properties.” While preserving its traditional exterior and furnishings as faithfully as possible, we have enhanced our modern Facilities to pursue even greater comfort and functionality. In the rear garden overlooking the Sea of Japan, we have newly added an open-air rock bath rich in refined charm; reborn under the name “Hiraiso Onsen,” we begin anew as one of Otaru’s newest tourist attractions.
Our 8,000-tsubo garden, begun by my great-grandfather in the early Showa era, is surrounded by trees over 100 years old and is a celebrated spot in Otaru, with 200 cherry trees in full bloom in early May. From late May through June, wisteria trellises and azaleas follow, and in summer you can enjoy viburnum snowballs, hydrangeas, and carefully tended roses. I especially love the autumn foliage in late October, and the deep winter snow that transforms everything into a pure white landscape is equally refreshing for the soul.

Reviving Hokkaido's Premier Classic Hotel with a Modern Sensibility Originally built in 1931 as the first Hotel exclusively for foreign guests in Hokkaido, the "Former Etchuya Hotel" carries a rich history. During wartime, it served as an officers' club for the army, and post-war, it was requisitioned by the U.S. military. Designated as a historic building by Otaru City and recognized as part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's "33 Modernization Heritage Sites," this architectural gem has been brought back to life after years of closure. While preserving the nostalgic charm and architectural beauty of its historic structure, the building has undergone a bold renovation, transforming it into a boutique Hotel that reflects a modern sensibility. Experience a unique world of creativity that goes beyond the concept of a classic Hotel.
