It had switched to the early-summer menu. Even when I’m worn out from work and forget the sense of the season, staying at Sunset Susami always lets me head home feeling a little more refreshed. The creative dishes made with fresh, seasonal local ingredients are wonderful, and the Onsen—with different temperatures depending on where you bathe—is always excellent. The building is always kept spotless whenever I visit, and even when staff change over, they carefully clean tables after meals. One of this Accommodation’s charms is how strongly you can feel the staff’s sincerity. The special dessert introduced this time—the Inazumi Roll made by a front desk staff member—was truly delicious. The sponge was moist, and it paired perfectly with coffee. (As expected from a former Dojima Roll pastry chef—it really is on another level.) That’s given me yet another reason to stay at Sunset Susami. I love that I can always relax here (lol).

The floors throughout the Ryokan were comfortable to walk on barefoot, making it feel like home. I completely understood why rolling suitcases are not allowed. I could really appreciate the owner’s attention to detail, and I thought it was wonderful. The location was excellent, and the meals were delicious.

Everything was excellent—no complaints at all. It was a truly memorable Hotel. The food in particular was outstanding; it may have been the best of any place we’ve stayed so far. Not only was it delicious, but the portions were generous—we’re big eaters, and even we left completely full. The Room was also wonderful, with a lovely view of Lake Biwa. Simply the best. We stayed here to celebrate a birthday. The sashimi came with daikon carved into a crane, and there was also sekihan (red rice). Everything looked beautiful and tasted great, leaving both our stomachs and hearts full. All of the staff were wonderful and very considerate, which made our time here truly enjoyable. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. There was only one reason I came to Shirahama: To stay at Kuroshio Sou. When people think of Shirahama, many picture the sea and resorts. But what I found here was Wakayama itself. What moved me most at this Accommodation was not only how outstanding the food was. It was Head Chef Etani’s exceptional skill, and his deep respect for the producers who support every single dish. Fishermen. Farmers. Brewers. Roasters. And the artisans who continue to protect Japan’s fermentation culture. The moment I saw the map of producers introduced alongside the meal, I understood what this Accommodation truly values. Through the cuisine, you encounter not only ingredients, but also the people behind them and Wakayama’s climate and character. I was especially impressed by how delicious the soy sauce and Kinzanji miso were at dinner. When I asked about them, I learned they were from Horigawaya Nomura—a producer with over 350 years of history that still preserves traditional craftsmanship using firewood-heated iron kettles—making both their soy sauce and Kinzanji miso in that way today as well. I had originally planned to visit a different soy sauce brewery, but heavy rain made it impossible. Sometimes, the places you cannot reach end up guiding you to the story you were truly meant to find. For me, Kuroshio Sou was exactly that kind of place. The wonderful Onsen gently healed not only my body, but my mind as well. The quiet comfort throughout the building, Chef Etani’s cuisine, and the hospitality of all staff— together they quietly express this Accommodation’s philosophy in everything it does。 As a former chef from Tasmania, there is something I felt deeply: True hospitality is not just serving delicious food; it is helping guests connect with the people and culture that sustain a place。 I now have one more reason to return to Wakayama。 Thank you again from my heart.

Due to bad weather, we changed our travel destination and ended up staying here at short notice as a family of five. Everyone except the person who made the Reservation wasn’t very enthusiastic until we arrived, but our stay here won them over and they were extremely satisfied. We felt truly relaxed by the meals, the atmosphere of the Room, and the hospitality. Personally, I was thrilled to find several types of Isamu Noguchi lighting in the traditional Japanese house-style Room. Next time, I’d love to spend time here during the rainy season or when the fresh greenery is at its best.

Our family of four stayed in a room with an open-air bath. Even putting it modestly, it was amazing. The meals, baths, and views were all excellent. The food was generous and delicious, and at night we enjoyed a sky full of stars. The bath left our skin silky smooth—especially the morning bath, which I highly recommend. We had an extremely satisfying stay in every way. This time, we stayed in both the villa and the Deluxe Twin, and both Rooms were very clean. However, on the first night we chose to have a BBQ at the villa, but it was too hot to handle. We thought it would be nice if there were a mist system on the terrace.

It had been a while since my last stay, but once again I thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular views, delicious meals, and the silky-smooth Onsen water. While some parts of the Facility felt a bit dated, the hospitality more than made up for it. Next time, I hope to visit in winter to enjoy crab.
